Persistent attempts to gain access to my Apple ID spanning years (long)

    Posted: 02 May 2020 04:10 PM PDT

I used my standard email for years, until my 2 factor authentication began popping up multiple times a week from someone gaining access to my password. The attempts came from all over the world, so I can only assume it was someone spoofing their location.

I continuously changed my password and did not keep it stored anywhere digitally. Finally, I created an email account only for use with my apple stuff. The same thing began happening after a while.

I have now created an email address with a completely randomized name and a totally different client that I was not previously using (yahoo instead of google) and today, my 2FA was bypassed and this person briefly had access to my account. I only realized it because my iMessages stopped sending. Then I saw the email in my yahoo account saying that my password had been reset.

I was able to do all of the recon work to fix this, and I changed my passwords on all of my apps with accounts. I turned 2FA back on.

I do not understand why this is happening to me or how I can fix it. I am nobody, in a sprawling metropolis of millions. I'm not a celebrity, I don't have money, fire nudes, or anything worth hacking except the app where I pay my astronomical student loan debt and my bank account with $2 in it. I don't have jilted ex lovers that may be doing this. I don't have enemies. I don't fall prey to the African princes trying to send me millions of dollars. I don't visit the dark web or weird porn sites. I considered malware on a device, but I've had multiple devices over the past several years. This has been happening to me for over seven years, off and on.

Does anyone have recommendations on how to stop this from happening? Should I approach Apple with the problem? It is driving me absolutely insane.

    Help with MacBook Air keyboard

    Posted: 02 May 2020 12:02 PM PDT

Hi - i foolishly took off all the keys from my MacBook Air 13" (2015) in an attempt to clean them, but i chipped and ruined several of the keys when taking them off, and now many do not fit or are really hard to press down. I can buy a a keyboard replacement online, but I do not have the ability to replace the keyboard from within - so I was wondering if I would be able to take the keys off of something like this and then just place them on my Mac, or is the mechanism different for replacement keys?

Backup takes way too much spaces

    Posted: 02 May 2020 04:49 PM PDT

My iPhone XR running 13.4 has a backup size that's over 12GB. Even if I turn off every app it still shows Next Backup as 9.9GB. What could be taking this space? I tried deleting the back up but the new backup is the same size.

I have iCloud photos so they are not part of this back up. Neither are Messages as they are counted separately. This is just the Backup files.

'StainGate' on Late 2013 Pro. Still covered outside of 4-year replacement window?

    Posted: 02 May 2020 11:11 AM PDT

I noticed this starting about a year ago when it was just in the corner of the bezel. Over that time, it has spread around the monitor and is slowly creeping in on the display.

Doing some Googling, it appears this is what is referred to as StainGate for macbooks. Where the reflective coating becomes all splotchy.

I see that at one point, Apple offered free replacement of the coating (screen?) within a 4-year window from the date the macbook was purchased.

With mine being a Late 2013 model, I'm about 2 years too late from this replacement. But since this didn't even start occurring on my screen until about a year ago, maybe support would have some leniency?

Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue and has gotten their repair covered even when the free replacement time has passed?

IPad not charging at all, even when using different cords and power bricks

    Posted: 02 May 2020 11:05 AM PDT

So my IPad is not charging, I've tried switching both the plug and power brick, but neither seems to work, and both cords work for other devices.

When I plug it in it acts as if it was charging showing the red battery, however it never gets past that screen even when left for an extended amount of time.

Does anyone have a solution to this?

    Also, thank you in advance.

Ever since I upgraded from "High Sierra" to "Catalina" my Macbook Pro seems less responsive and slightly groggy especially when running multiple tasks ... Is there a solution to this?

    Posted: 02 May 2020 06:07 PM PDT

My MacBook Pro has always been great. (MacBook Pro, Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015, 2.7 GHz i5, 8GB 1867 MHz RAM.)

Since I upgraded macOS from "High Sierra" to "Catalina" earlier this year (I skipped "Mojave"), it has felt slightly groggy especially when running multiple tasks.

My typical morning is watching a Periscope in Safari (which gives Safari and workout with all the interactive comments), running Spring Tool Suite 4 (Java/Eclipse) and developing a web application (Tomcat), the Mac gets noticeable less responsive, downright slow.

I brought it to the Apple Store (for something else) and I asked then to do a full clean re-installation of the OS for me. They did and it didn't help. Recently updated to 10.15.4 and initially I thought it helped, but not really.

CRACKPOT THEORY: I hate to use the "W-word" but the performance actually reminds me a Windows 10 machine my work once gave me that IT had bogged down with virus scanning software, when I was able to kill all the virus scanning processes, it ran much better -- Is it possible Catalina has a new built in virus or malware scanning that macOS didn't have before?

Is my MacBook Pro (with 8GB) simply not powerful enough to handle the new operating system and power-hungry tasks? I hate the idea of using an old OS version, but is the solution is to downgrade back to "High Sierra"? If I could upgrade the RAM to 16GB I would.

Is my iPhone XS Max shocking me while it charges normal?

    Posted: 02 May 2020 09:39 PM PDT

Most posts I saw on other forums about this were years old and not about the current model iPhone I have. I'm nervous as to what to do because I think the Apple store in my town is closed (COVID-19 y'kno). I'm sure this is happened at least 5 times but I'll just explain what happened tonight because I can remember. I was using my phone and my pointer finger was resting on the Ringer toggle when it suddenly pricked me. Didn't cause much pain just like a surprise. I can be imagining it but it feels weird applying pressure to it. This has mostly happened when my thumb rests above the charging port on my screen. I don't remember this happening with any phone I've had in my life? Or to any of my family in the house? What would you advise me to do? I don't have Apple warranty.

Is there a 3rd Party Diagnostics tool? Apple Diagnostics couldn't see my mac's keyboard and power issues

    Posted: 02 May 2020 05:33 PM PDT

I just plugged a wired keyboard into my macbook and accessed the apple diagnostics on my macbook pro 2012 and it said : No issues found. But clearly this mac has issues with it's keyboard and power.

So can anyone please suggest software that can diagnose these and potentially other issues ? I think a drink was spilled on this mac and I want to know what's broken and what's not and what's fixable and worth fixing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks !!

    Keyboard Issue:

    - Keys type themselves, power button doesn't work , pressing keys can cause the computer to shutdown or restart. If the computer dimmed it's screen, it will undim on it's own at random intervals.

    Power Issue :
    - The power button doesn't work.

    - If I set it to go to sleep, by either selecting it from a menu or closing the lid, it will either restart or shut down

    - If I shut it down, I can turn it back on my unplugging the battery, putting it back in and then connecting the magsafe connector.

    - The battery is working fine. It's being charged.

    - When the battery was dead, I was able to turn on the laptop by plugging the connector and then waiting a few seconds - if it turns on - good - if it doesn't then I'll try again until it does.

Best way to clean install after virus? 10.14.6

    Posted: 02 May 2020 11:29 AM PDT

I recently picked up a strange virus that Sophos and Malwarebytes both were not able to detect. It was causing my kernel to contact an IP address in Africa that came back to being high level malware botnet distributor, from what I could surmise. Luckily, my installation of Little Snitch caught the kernel trying to contact the server and stopped it.

I'm on 10.14.6. What is the best way to do a complete erase of the entire startup disk, and re-install? If I erase the startup disk instead of just my startup volume on the disk, will I still be able to use the recovery partition to install 10.14?

I thought I could that but every tutorial I have found that involves overwriting the disk also involves making a bootable USB drive, which is leading me to suspect it is not possible to use the recovery partition after a full disk overwrite.

Can anyone confirm or deny my suspicion?

Apple TV App on MacBook Pro won't let me buy or play content

    Posted: 02 May 2020 08:35 PM PDT

Hello everyone! So to be as straightforward as possible, when I try to buy something on my Apple TV APP (not the device) through my MacBook, I'm getting the error:

"Could not purchase "". An unkown error occured (-42032)"

I did a google search and still couldn't figure out the issue. I've signed out and in of my account and nothing.

I recently messed up by changing permissions on my macbook, but reset my permissions and reinstalled MacOS and everythig else started working fine. However, I've noticed "iTunes on Windows" info pop up when doing my search under that error, and I DO have Windows installed with BootCamp on there. Although I don't really use it, could something about the permissions I messed with (I think under root) have also affected Windows, which is then affecting my macOS access to Apple TV?

Thanks in advance for the help!

I need help: iDeleted my Photo Library and cant get it back

    Posted: 02 May 2020 02:26 PM PDT

Apologies if I wrote this in the wrong place or if this is an issue someone's solved before, I couldn't find anything anywhere. I'm typing up a lot of details just so everything is presented in full detail and hopefully without too much confusion in the end.

I'll preface this with I am not a techie, at all, whatsoever. I have a mid-2010 Mac. Got it last year for hella cheap just to back up my iPhone X as my chromebook doesn't support it. At the time I got it, was having problems logging into the user so I somehow managed to make a new user account as the main. I guess at the time I had made my external HD the main HD for my photo library as all my comp & app folders are on there however Apple automatically set it up. Note: I forgot that.

Fast forward to a few days ago, I was trying to reorganize my folders and was trying to permanently move my Photo Library from one location to another.

What I had read told me the safest way is to have two Finder windows open; one of where the Library is, and the one where I want to move it to. Drag and drop. Exit the app. Ctrl+Click Open the app from the Dock and when the prompt comes up, choose the new destination. Quit again. Delete the app icon from the older folder and empty trash. This seemed to do the trick.

Then I found out there was 250+GB of Internal HD space taken up from the old account that I never use so I learned how to delete it. Did that successfully and was on a roll and decided to clear out my iCloud of my photos and back ups while I'm at it.

This is where my problem began. I realized the older Photo Library never deleted. Everytime I opened up the Library, regardless of Ctrl+Click Open, or manually opening it from the Dock, or either of the two destination folders, a pop up would always state:

"Cannot Import Items These items cannot be added to your Photo library because the file is not supported by Photos."

Forgive me if this sounds ridiculous thus far. I figured, since I don't have much on the external HD; I could back that up onto the internal HD, reformat the external, add the information back, factory reset my Desktop and all should, in theory, be fine.

However, when I tried to move the Photo Library Back, it would prompt:

"Modifying "Pictures" requires an administrator name and password. To move "Photos Library", click Authenticate."

To which I do, then get prompted another error:

"The operation can't be completed because the backup items can't be modified."

So there — I realized I made a grave mistake somewhere, and I can't just undo it all after all the damage that I've done. I tried to revert from a Time Machine snapshot but but it states it cannot be done as the file can't be found. Additionally, in this process I noticed I was having issues accessing my iCloud back ups through Time Machine and now there's an exclamation mark on the cloud icon in my sidebar.

I'm not sure how to correct any of these and I'm afraid to do further damage. Again thank you for reading through my escalating list of damages and confusion. Hopefully someone can give me some help!

    Ps and TY!!

Reminder Notifications Not Syncing Btwn Phone/Laptop After Engaging With Them

    Posted: 02 May 2020 08:08 PM PDT

    Hey all,

Wondering if anyone knows a fix for:

When I have a reminder pop up and select to have it remind me later (tomorrow, tonight, etc) and then go to my other Mac devices ...the reminder notification is still there and I have to redo the action all over again.

Would love to have these notifications and the actions I take on them sync across my phone and Macbook.

    Thanks

    Allocating Partitions to Existing Partitions?

    Posted: 02 May 2020 08:00 PM PDT

I have an external hard drive that I initially set up to include four partitions: one partition for my Time Machine backup; one partition for my wife's Time Machine backup; and then one each, for my wife and I, for an external hard drive in general.

We haven't used the external hard drive beyond the Time Machine backups and I would like to re-allocate the remaining 2 TB to each of our backup partitions. When I test this out, by trying to seeing what removing/adding a partition would do, it goes in a particular order. For example, if I select a portion and decrease its size, it is added to the exiting partition in a counter-clockwise direction. I can't quite seem to wrap my head around how to decrease/increase the partitions, and in what order, to end up with 2 TB of space for both mine and my wife's Backup partition.

I'm hoping this makes sense. I feel like there is an easy algebra algorithm I should be able to follow mentally to figure this out (or a river crossing puzzle, where you need to get a chicken, fox, and grain across a river without any of them being eaten.) But I am a little brain deficient because of a baby's sleeping habits at the moment.

So what order should I decrease/increase the partition, to get my desired outcome?

I'm hoping the picture provides some context.

    Thoughts?
