I want to know how to format a Mac

    Posted: 19 May 2020 07:58 PM PDT

Is there a native way to erase the disk like when you erase an iOS device?

I will appreciate if you have any extra advice. This will help me if I sell my Mac in a future time.

    Backup Just One Persons Texts?

    Posted: 19 May 2020 08:39 PM PDT

I'm trying to reset my phone but I want to backup just my fiancé's texts that we have had since we met. Is there anyway to do this specifically for our texts rather than all of my texts ever? (I can buy more iCloud storage but really am not concerned with other people I have texted ever)

Late 2011 MacBook Pro - Unexpected black screen, won't stop rebooting, safe mode/recovery mode not working

    Posted: 19 May 2020 07:34 PM PDT

I had an unexpected and very troubling issue occur with my MacBook Pro. I was using Safari to log onto the telehealth service my therapist uses for online therapy sessions - https://doxy.me/. As soon as I opened the web page, my screen went to digital black and my computer's fans went to maximum speed. I have my computer connected to an external monitor, and the monitor was suddenly showing vertical lines of colored pixels. I force-shut down my computer because it wouldn't stop and seemed stuck.

Now whenever I try to turn my MacBook Pro back on, it goes through an unending reboot loop. It shows the Apple logo and a loading bar underneath, then goes to a gray screen, pauses for a little bit, and shuts down. Then repeat. It's also worth mentioning that the Apple logo and loading bar are oddly pixelated - something I've never seen before.

I have a late 2011 15-inch MacBook Pro, running High Sierra, 8GB RAM, 128GB Solid State hard drive. I can't remember much of the other specs off the top of my head.

I've been following the help outlined in the following troubleshooting articles, but nothing has come remotely close to working:

    1. https://www.howtogeek.com/189104/troubleshoot-your-mac-with-these-hidden-startup-options/
    2. https://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/mac/recovery-mode-internet-3636668/
    • When I hold down Shift during reboot to initiate Safe Mode, my computer goes through the Apple logo and loading bar, then gets to a gray screen and stays there. It stalls there. Nothing happens.
    • When I hold down the D key during reboot to initiate Apple Diagnostics, I am able to run hardware diagnostic testing. However, it's worth mentioning that everything looks oddly pixelated, similar to how I described the Apple logo upon reboot above. All hardware diagnostics, including the extended diagnostic, turn up with zero problems.
    • When I hold down Command+R to bring up MacOS Utilities, I get through the Apple logo and loading icon, and again stall indefinitely on a gray screen.
    • When I hold down Option/Alt+Command+R to initiate Internet Recovery mode, it successfully shows me the spinning globe, asks me for my internet password, connects to the internet, and then brings me again to the indefinitely stalled gray screen. Again here, the screen with the spinning globe and internet connection is oddly pixelated.

I'm not sure what else to try. I'm certainly not a savant when it comes to computers, but I can follow directions and tinker effectively well. What else should I try? What other information can I provide you?

How to get back OS X after Installing Ubuntu with clean install?

    Posted: 19 May 2020 05:07 PM PDT

    Hello,

I hope you are all doing well.

I'm using a mid 2014 Macbook Pro 13' in Retina Display with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.

Short Version of my story: I want to install Mac OS X after I wiped my SSD whilst installing Ubuntu and deleting every partition including the swap space made during the time I dual booted on my Mac.

    Things I tried :

1.Already tried Cmd + R and Cmd + OPTION + R for the recovery form internet but screen is black on my broken macbook's display as I only use External Monitor primarily.

    1. Tried DMG 2 IMG on flash drive with DMG file else Capitan downloaded from apple. While Booting nothing appears.

    2. Tried closing the lip as soon as the Mac boots but to convert my external monitor as my primary display but still I cannot hold Option key for booting up through the flash drive as I only have 1 WiFi external keyboard.

If you can help me in any way It would be really appreciated.

Goal : To get back Mac OS X If not possible then at least Windows 10

My current setup : Running Ubuntu solely on my Mac which was installed through the flash drive and all the partitions were automatically set up to clean install Ubuntu.

    Thank You

The full story of the current situation :

A few weeks ago I accidentally dropped my Mac from my bed while I was asleep with the lip open. I know it was a big mistake at the first place sleeping with a laptop on your side but I might have been watching a movie or some YouTube Videos I don't even remember and accidentally fell asleep.

The fall surely woke me up and to assure my Mac was still working I checked it and had a crack underneath the display and the left portion of the screen was dead ( a little portion like when you keep 4 or 5 pencils together all the way to the length of the display)

Everything worked fine for weeks I mean I was getting used to the fact that It was broken and I checked the price for the replacement but I thought getting a new one might be a better option.

So, I connected an external monitor on it which was through HDMI and everything worked perfectly. I used it for like a month with the monitor and I was loving the fact that I now had more room to work with.

Now, The display still worked with the monitor at this point because while cleaning up my broken Display of the dirt it collected over the past few month I cleaned it while it was off with Colin and made sure all the smudges were gone. When I booted it up the screen went black. It turned on and everything was normal with monitor and all but the screen itself was dead.

So, I usually eat and drink coffee at my desk. Two weeks ago I spilled black coffee on the keyboard and track pad which was a big accident and was proved to be fatal for my Mac.

I immediately turned it upside down and made sure no coffee was on the keyboard or track pad and then dried it out with a cloth.

After that I kept it outside in the Sun in the afternoon on a hot day with the lid little open and my Mac Inverted.

Then after an hour of two I brought it back in and then suddenly the Mac slowed down.

I'm sure it worked perfectly fine before I spilled coffee on it and I could hear the fan spinning faster from this point onwards.

After 3 days of using it with the monitor it became too slow for me to use and eventually I installed Ubuntu 20.04LTS on it with the dual boot.

I started using more of the Ubuntu and decided to wipe off the drive entirely and deleted every partition whilst the installation of Ubuntu and it only ran Ubuntu from this point onwards.

Now, I kind of miss the Mac OS X, I know it slowed down because of the Catalina update not because of the spillage when I read only after a week or so using Ubuntu.

So, I'm now trying a way to get back OS X on my Mac back because I kind of miss it a lot.

I tried the CMD + R and the CMD + OPTION + R on it while booting the Mac but nothing appears. The external display is blank all the way no matter how much time I give it.

I slept overnight trying with that and still the fan was spinning at the Max speed I believe.

So, I want to ask if you know how can I get back Mac OS X back.

I don't mind wiping the whole drive.

Is there a way to create a bootable drive from DMG of El Capitan because I tried it using DMG2IMG thing already but still whole booting up I can't see anything on the display and eventually it will boot up to the Ubuntu.

I tried windows through the drive but since nothing shows up while booting up it boots into.

At this point I don't mind installing Windows on my Mac as many applications are not available in Linux.

But i would prefer the Mac OS X. El Capitan or any version.

If you know the solution for this please let me know and it would be a great help during the Quarantine.

    Thank You

Bluetooth and Boot issues in Windows 10 Boot Camp

    Posted: 19 May 2020 10:22 PM PDT

Recently installed a fresh version of Windows 10 to a 128 GB partition of my 1TB internal drive.

    2017 MacBook Pro 15"
Never had any issues on current boot camp installs on a 2015 rMBP 13" and a 2012 rMBP 15"

    Problem 1:

Was having issues connecting my bluetooth mouse and keyboard (MX Master and MX Keys) while on Windows. They still work when on macOS. Cleared the partition and reinstalled another fresh installation of Windows 10. Spoke to Apple live chat and was advised to go to Device Manager, expand network adapters, right click the network card and select properties, go to the power management tab, and uncheck the box "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power"
This solution worked until I restarted the computer, it would show the devices as connected then wouldn't move the mouse, then would show paired but not connected. I removed the devices and tried to connect them once again, and would show me either "Try connecting again" or that Bluetooth on my computer wasn't working. Currently I am just using the Logitech unifying device to connect but I'd like to keep it on bluetooth if possible.

    Problem 2:

Restarting into macOS from Windows via Boot Camp. Shown the error "Could not locate the macOS boot volume" and will have to restart and go through boot camp manager (holding the option key down)

As always, thanks for all your help r/applehelp

    Apple Back to School 2020

    Posted: 19 May 2020 10:01 PM PDT

I'll be starting my Masters in September and need to upgrade to a new Macbook Pro, but wanted to know if it's worth waiting for the Back to School deal being that I really don't need the offered headphones. It looks like the shipment is going to take almost a month to arrive for the 13" Macbook Pro for where I am – so because I need to purchase it likely before the back to school deal comes out (assuming it'll come out mid-June or July).

Is the deal usually just adding headphones? Or does the price go a bit cheaper than regular education pricing? And does the AppleCare+ become cheaper than the current offer of 15% off? (I read somewhere it is 20% for back-to-school?).

Also, has anyone purchased something a week before the Back to School deal comes on and ends up disputing?

I'm in Canada if that helps, and imagine it would be slightly different than the US or other countries.

Connecting 2020 Macbook Air to dual monitors

    Posted: 19 May 2020 03:58 PM PDT

Hello all, I have a 2020 Macbook Air, a Lenovo thunderbolt 3 dock, a thunderbolt 3 cord, and two HP monitors.

I'm trying to run it as a dual screen setup with the macbook closed, but as of now I can only get one desktop mirrored on both screens, whether the laptop is open or closed. Apple support told me that I need to use two cords to two monitors, aka that the dock won't work.

Is there any way to use my dock and one thunderbolt 3 cord to run dual screens? Thanks.

MY Computer has been really slow and sluggish since updating to Catalina?

    Posted: 19 May 2020 03:47 PM PDT

I have a Late 2014 Mac Mini 2.6 GHZ processor, 8 GB memory and 1536 graphics. I updated to Catalina to get the new Logic update and its been multiple problems since. It takes a long time for my computer to load up. For everything to appear after login in, it can take 10-15 minutes. Then I use Firefox which takes about another 15 minutes to load anything.

There's times when I click on the app and it will bounce but never open. When I right click it, I get an application not responding message. I have this issue at times with Finder, Google Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Word and Logic Pro.

Anytime I shut down my computer, MY computer spends 5-10 minutes on the home screen loading. Then It will black out and I will get a "this computer will restart due to a problem message". Then the computer restarts instead of shutting down. There are other problems I have with the update but these are the main ones.

I don't want to downgrade back to High Sierra because one I want to keep the Logic update and Two I dont have a backup on this computer other than Icloud. i have music on Logic Pro that I dont think would be backed up if something were to go wrong.

I also ran that disk utility thing and it didnt list any issues. So what could be causing these problems?

Issue pairing new bluetooth speaker to older mac book

    Posted: 19 May 2020 09:09 PM PDT

My grandma is trying to connect a new apple bluetooth speaker (https://www.apple.com/shop/buy-homepod/homepod/white?fnode=265e090010d1098dd7d26e51631c6222570a80123848c69f3d3eb5a330947f97c9511f48cdebc941f433dfbdfdd4c79020c4ef7ab7d230c8085532fe63f8853917044132335aa0dc03aaaca52a98dbf972c4d291ada75b2887222ec280fee02f62aa5556c6e1effcd4eb6b855177f11c60fbd968e6da7aa2b37fa4e291602374&fs=fh%3D47d1%2B464a) with an older apple laptop (I'm not sure which one or what its running).

The problem occurs when she tries to pair the 2 devices. They will pair for a moment before disconnecting from each other with a "connection failed" error message.

I am out of my league on this one and am not sure what the problem could be. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

How can I STOP my phone from RANDOMLY capitalizing WORDS

    Posted: 19 May 2020 09:07 PM PDT

okay obviously title is exaggeration, but sometimes my phone takes random ass words and decides they should be capitalized in ridiculous words. For instance - if I've typed hELLo in a chat with someone before, my phone will repeatedly autocorrect the capitalization of hello every time I type it. It's INFURIATING. The one solution I have found is to turn off all autocapitalization completely, but that also makes it so that the first letter in a new sentence doesn't autocapitalize, which I would still like to happen. Is there any way to make my phone start sentences with capital letters, but not random words?

Custom monitor to match an iMac

    Posted: 19 May 2020 08:45 PM PDT

Hello community. I want to build a monitor and put it in an iMac shell. I am hoping this doesn't violate rule 2. I wouldn't consider this a hackintosh but if it is I apologize please delete my question.

I found a video on YouTube (link is below) and I think it serves as a great guide. I want to make sure I am getting the components most similar to my the iMac I bought from Apple last week (specs are below, estimated delivery date is mid June).

Specifically I am looking for the display with front glass and iMac aluminum body. I'm not sure if the parts listed in the YouTube link will be matched for my new iMac and was hoping the community might be able to help with that knowledge.

    Thanks for your help!

Anyone know of an app similar to Preview for the iPad?

    Posted: 19 May 2020 11:39 AM PDT

Since Apple still does not have an app like Preview for the iPad, I was wondering if there was an app like it, that does all of the things Preview does. I'm looking for more of the photo editing aspects of the app, and not the PDF reading. I crop, edit, remove white-background, etc. from photos and add parts of pictures together in a Photoshop-esque manner with Preview and now with the new iPad Pro, I was wondering if anybody knows of an app where I can do all of those things.

    Thanks

Apple Pencil 1st Gen doesn’t seem to fit properly in my charging port, and doesn’t show up when connected.

    Posted: 19 May 2020 08:10 PM PDT

Hello, I have an Apple Pencil gen 1, which I use with an iPad 7th gen. Recently I've noticed my pencil sits loosely in the charging port even though my Lightning charger fits fine. Also, when I plug it in, I cannot get my iPad to recognise the pencil.

I have tried every solution I could see, so is it a simple fix or time to take it into an Apple store or something?

Used iPhone 7+ with keyboard issue

    Posted: 19 May 2020 07:56 PM PDT

I just got this phone today and there seems to be a problem when i open up any app that uses the keyboard, (iMessage, snapchat, notes, etc.) I'll click on a box to text and the cursor will come up, but the phone will freeze for about 10 seconds before allowing me to type. If i touch anything while it's frozen, then it will input whatever was touched in a fast sequence after it unfreezes. Its nothing major, but it gets very annoying, was wondering if there were any other people with this problem who could help. Thanks!

MacBook Pro 2016 running on OS Sierra won’t load any plugins I manually install into Garageband, yet is able to load all plugins I download via a package or install wizard. I’ve restarted the MacBook countless times, and have looked for tutorials on how to manually install plugins.

    Posted: 19 May 2020 04:09 PM PDT

Not sure of this is the place for GarageBand support (but I can't find anywhere else to ask this). Every time I manually install a plugin, it usually won't show up in GarageBand regardless of whether or not it's in the right place or not. I've searched up tutorials to see if I'm doing it correctly, and usually I'm putting it into the Remote Disk<Macintosh<Library<Audio<Plug-ins<VST folder, yet they never show up. The weird part is that I can download plugins that come from Packages (where it says install, put password, etc) but I can't seem to find the plugins I manually install in GarageBand. I may be doing it wrong, but I'm pretty sure I put the VST file into the correct place. I've tried deleting the caches, as well as restarting my Macbook, yet it won't show up. I'm using a MacBook Pro 13-inch, running in MacOS Sierra 10.12.6 if that helps. Also, the GarageBand version I'm using is 10.1.3.
