Has MacOS gotten worse over the last 10 years?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 03:44 PM PDT

As a layman but loyal MacOS user, I've noticed that MacOS overall has:

    1) Gotten more likely to freeze.

    2) Become less "snappy" and more slow

    3) More "BS" indirections. The interface used to be quite straightforward and simple to use. But it seems more and more functionality has piled onto the macOS and things just became a little more difficult to use because there's now always some nuances you gotta take care of for something to work.

I think this was due to since the "apple renaissance" that began with original iphone, OSX has seen a very steady market share increase over the last decade. Inevitably, this "growth" probably means apple internally increased the amount of resources invested in macos and that in turn results in a more bloated OS.

I feel like macOS has the danger of going the way of Windows, which would really be a shame because it still is better to use than Windows today, but just doesn't feel as good as it used to.

Have you guys noticed similar feelings?

I am really impressed with how MacOS performs

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 06:50 PM PDT

When I was around 4 I learned how to use a computer on my Dad's Macintosh SE. Later on at 12 got my first [Windows] PC and had been on XP until around 2012 when I got my second [Windows] PC running Win 8 to now Win 10. Strayed from gaming for more productive tasks and was lucky enough to get my hands on a computer running MacOS [First El Capitan and now running Catalina].

I've been using this OS as my main productivity and programming center, while it was difficult at first to get a feel for it, I've really grown to like a lot. So long as you can boot to the desktop there isn't much to worry about, at least for me. No worries about the system ripping me away from what I'm doing for an update I can't turn off or notifications I don't care about blasting away while I am trying to focus. I spend less time now trying to figure out what program places the menu/settings. Full screen is actually full screen. Most of all, besides great resource optimization, I don't feel I have to keep the computer on in fear I'll have to manually reopen each one to continue from where I left off. Even in the event the system shuts down from an outage.

While windows does feel snappier, plays better with games and the window snapping between 50/50 or 4x4 is something I think MacOS could benefit from, I find myself preferring MacOS especially when it comes to using the terminal during web development.

[QUESTION] Good NAS replacement for Time Capsule?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 02:27 AM PDT

I've been using a 2TB Time capsule for backup on my home network, providing backup for 3 Macbooks. It's worked fine for nearly 10 years, but the disc has started to throw errors occasionally. Apple don't appear to offer Time Capsules any more, so I'm after recommendations for a NAS, ideally that could support Time Machine backups from multiple machines and also function as a media server. Ease of use and compatibility more important than price. TIA.

Why did Catalina drop support for standard HFS?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 10:18 PM PDT

A weird situation has arisen where a modern Mac will read a FAT16 volume but is incapable of reading the Classic Mac HFS filesystem natively. Think of Classic Mac installation/application media, '90s games, etc.

While I can vaguely understand why 32-bit support was removed in Catalina, removing support for HFS seems to be completely illogical. Being able to access common storage formats, past and present, is fundamental to information systems. Breaking compatibility with an obsolete but comparatively common file system baffles me!

Perhaps someone else has a better idea as to why support was dropped?

    macOS/iOS app: Evernote alternative

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 12:28 AM PDT

I don't know if this the right subreddit but I'll try anyway.

I used Evernote, but that was so bloated, slow and crippled. I've got the tip to use NoteStation on my Synology NAS but now, with 1.400 recipes with images, it's far more worse than Evernote.

Is there a simple, yet quick and cloud enabled note app (with also the option to share to an other person) for just simple recipe's (1 or 2 pics and text). OneNote, Google Keep or Apple Notes isn't an option nor is recipe software.

    OneDrive vs Google Drive performance

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 12:21 AM PDT

Hi everybody. Thanks to my university account I have 1TB space on OneDrive and Google Drive, so I was considering to migrate all my documents related to my degree in one of those services. However, I am wondering which one has better features or a better client on Mac, especially regarding performance.

    Which is your choice?

    Thanks

gcc can't find standard c and c++ libraries after Catalina update.

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 11:56 PM PDT

I'm trying to build some small command line tools in c and c++ but but none of the compilers can find the standard libs, eg stdio.h , iostream etc after updating to catalina. I've tried xcode-select --install and reset but to no avail.

Am I missing some basic concept here? Thank you.

Unable to create subtasks for Reminders

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 07:04 PM PDT

Hi, am currently using a Macbook Pro 2017 (No Touchbar)

I've been trying to create subtasks for Reminders, looking at multiple online articles and even the Mac website whereby it was stated that Subtasks for Reminders can be created by using Command + ], Edit >Indent or just dragging the reminder over another. However, none has worked for me whereby under Edit, there is no option to Indent Reminder.

Anyone has a solution for this?

Do you know what annoys me most about macOS? Developers who don't follow Apple standards

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 10:08 AM PDT

I have the impression that many of the leading macOS application developers (but not only on this OS) don't give a shit about the standards set by Apple for designing applications for this system.

Take Google Chrome, for example. You can close page tabs with a cross on the left in Safari, Opera, Vivaldi, even Firefox. The programming editors also make this possible, such as Visual Studio Code or software from JetBrains. But in Chrome? You can't do that. You have to get used to the crosses on the right-hand side, like on Windows.

There are more cases where, as a user with well-established habits, you have to adapt to the application. It's just annoying.

Optimizing iCloud Drive Started after Boot Camp Install Despite 1.5TB Free

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 05:23 PM PDT

2TB HD. iCloud Drive is 250GB. Total free space on HD was 1.7TB. I installed W10 via Boot Camp, using 350GB for W10 partition.

I've now realized that MacOS has started storing most of my large folders in the cloud inside iCloud Drive, even though I now have 1.5TB of empty space.

I know I can turn off optimization with the check box, but I like the concept of the feature. Any idea why it would start trying to save space when I have so much free space? It seems like the Boot Camp partitioning triggered it.

    Thanks!

join two SSD's into a single APFS Volume or?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 05:20 PM PDT

I have an internal SSD in my 2012 MacMini (quad-core i7 w 16 Gb RAM, Mojave 10.14.6 w Crucial 500Gb MX500). It's about 80% full. I just added a 2nd internal Samsung SSD 860 EVO 1TB that I found on sale. It all fit and it boots - all is good. Yay!

Advice requested - can I join the two SSD's together into a single APFS volume? Or should I make my newer 1TB SSD the new boot volume and just use the older 500Gb SSD for extra storage?

Is there any speed advantage to joining the two SSD's together into one "Fusion" drive? (apologies if terminology is incorrect).

Is there a better option I am missing? I have external storage with all my Media files. I use the mac mini as a Plex Media server, but also for some web/email/whatever.

MacBook Pro 16” (Catalina): System Preferences Crashing

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 04:22 PM PDT

Brand new machine, 10.15.4, fresh install.

Whenever the system requires an administration password, it takes up to 2 minutes to load. When logging in after powering on, the system freezes with the correct password entered for up to a minute. When giving an application a system permission, the authentication process locks up the system for longer then that. I've tried reinstalling OS and resetting Dram, launched in safe mode and ran a hardware check. Everything else functions quickly and correct.

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

    Up-to-date but update is available?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 07:25 PM PDT

My roommate's MacBook (8,1) has just been updated to Catalina 10.15.4, which as far as I know is the latest version, but for some reason there is a notification saying there is a software update available. When you go into System Preferences and check for an update, it says that it is up to date. I even tried checking for updates in Terminal but again, none are available.

    Thoughts?

[HELP] Favorites don't show up in new tabs, windows, or search bar in Safari

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 10:15 AM PDT

Can't change read and write permissions, can't access external hard drives, can't download apps I need. What do I do?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 05:44 PM PDT

I got a MacBook Air as am emergency replacement when my brand new MacBook Pro stopped working a few weeks ago. I am having problems with the Mac Air that I've never had with a computer before.

I need Photoshop for school and for a hobby. I can't download it. Every single I time I try I get 'error 42 could not locate critical file'. I was able to download it fine on the Mac Pro. I did everything Adobe Support and Mac Support told me over the phone, nothing worked, the issue persists.

Today I tried to access my my external hard drive, I could feel it whirring when it was plugged in but it would not show up anywhere. I tried my other external hard drive, same problem. I tried both hard drives on my roommate's computer, they showed up fine.

As as test I tried to download photoshop again this time to a different location, instead of downloads I tried Macintosh HD. It failed because I didn't have permissions.

I went to Get Info and tried changing my admin permissions to read and write, I kept getting the error message "the operation could not be completed because you don't have the necessary permissions". Wtf? It's my computer. I own it. I paid for it and by my standards it was pretty expensive. Who else has the permissions if I don't???

I read tons of articles and tried to change my permissions, I tried disabling SIP and enabling root user and creating another admin to give permissions from there. Nothing works and I'm losing my mind. What on earth can I do???

Catalina - How to make OS remember default app for opening video ?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 05:38 PM PDT

Sounds like the easiest thing on Earth but now for Catalina I cannot find a way for the OS to remember to open MP4 files with VLC, not Quicktime.

Certainly I used the "Right Click => Open With => Always Open With" route but it doesn't work at all.

    Any recommendation / suggestion ?

Google Photos and the Mac Photo app

    Hi,

I have an Android phone and a Mac. The pictures that I take with my phone gets saved on the Google cloud through the Google Photos app. I was wondering if there is any chance to sync the pictures stored on Google with the Photos app of my Mac...

    Thanks.

Using iCloud Drive to extend Macbook Pro storage? Using a different cloud storage?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 12:57 PM PDT

Hi everyone, so my search to add more storage to my 256GB SSD on my Macbook Pro continues.

My idea is: Store random files on a cloud service to free up space on my SSD.

I am almost 100% working in an apple environment, so iCloud with iCloud drive seems like the best choice.

I am just very confused about how iCloud drive works, does it keep a local copy of all files I put there on my Macbook as well?
-> So if I create a folder of e.g. some videos I edited and other random files, will they take space on my icloud and also my local Macbook?
That would corrupt my idea entirely, even with storage optimization on. I want to be in charge what files are where and in which quality etc.

Syncing my desktop and documents is very nice for me, keeps my most important files synced.
I just need a dump to put e.g. holiday photos I took with my digital camera, that take a lot of space and that I do not want to be synced via photos to my iPhone as well.

Any thoughts whether icloud is a good choice for my plans?
If not any alternatives that would work?

    Thanks!

Bootable USB Drive not detectable at all now

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 04:20 PM PDT

I formatted and created a new usb drive in terminal. I'm currently on MacOS Catalina. I was making a GPT JHFS+ usb High Sierra drive for another computer. I was making this on My MacBook Pro for an old Mac Mini. I just wanted to do a fresh install on this old Mac. After the Mac was formatted and at the end when it was installing the createmediainstall it had an error which then said it failed to create a usb installer, and the USB was not ejected properly. Since then I can not get any mac to recognize the drive in terminal, disk utility or the system monitor. When I do plug it into a windows machine I do get the usb detected noise, but i can't see it obviously because its JHFS+.

Please kind internet strangers how do I get to reformat this drive and make it useful again?

Also why would I get this error mid installation?
