Can the iPad really replace a computer? Posted: 01 Apr 2020 12:49 PM PDT A few days ago I made a post in which I said I'd be using my iPad as a computer replacement for a few days and see how it goes. Many people were interested in knowing how my experience went so here's the full review on how that went: Note: I think it's worth pointing out that I didn't keep the keyboard and mouse connected the whole time, as they're kind of useless or pointless to use with certain apps, also, it defeats the whole point of replacing a laptop if you are tied to a keyboard and mouse at your desk, the Magic keyboard folio should fix this, but I still think you really need to examine what you're going to do with the iPad to know if you actually need a keyboard and trackpad at all. Also, sorry for taking so long. Word processing, presentations and spreadsheets:This is the first category I tested, it shouldn't be a surprise to say the iPad is pretty good at this. This is the category where the iWork and MS Office apps fall into. As a student I find myself writing essays, lab reports and making presentations frequently. With yesterday's update using the iWork apps feels almost like using the desktop versions. If you mainly do document editing I highly recommend you get an iPad, it's way faster and more responsive than a 10 year old laptop with an Intel Atom processor. Note taking:The reason I got an iPad in the first place was to use at school to take notes at school with the Apple Pencil. I've been doing it for two semesters and well... it's just great at it. The app I use is MS OneNote. Gaming:We know it's not like we can play Steam games in iPadOS, unless we use the Steam Link app, but my goal was not to turn on my iMac the whole time so I played my 3 favorite mobile games: World of Warships, Call of Duty mobile and Minecraft. I used a DualShock 4 controller to play Minecraft and CoD, which made the whole experience more console-like and enjoyable. I hope Mojang adds keyboard and mouse support to the iPad soon, as I'm sure it will be popular among players of the Bedrock edition. Programming:iPadOS doesn't have any native IDE or text editor like macOS, the only way to kind-of program stuff is using Swift Playgrounds, which isn't really meant to program apps. I am currently learning Python, so I searched for Python interpreters in the App Store, I came across Pythonista 3 which sounded cool and complete, however I was worried that it didn't seem to support Python 3.8, so I then found an app called PyTo, which is more like a normal text editor with a built-in terminal, but it did support Python 3.8, I ended up buying it, also because I wanted to support a small developer, and I jumped straight at it, to works great, I was even able to add my scripts to Siri Shortcuts. I also was disappointed that there isn't a native Terminal, I found an app called iSH, which emulates the Linux Alpine Terminal, the app is still in development but I like where it's going. This is my opinion as a beginner programmer, I'm sure many people will have found other workarounds for more profesional work. Photo import/editing:I own a Canon EOS Rebel SL3, I like photography as a hobby. Importing photos to the iPad is pretty simple, my hub has an SD card reader and USB ports, so I can do it either directly through the SD card or with a wired connection. The Photos app adds a new tab called import and the process is fast and simple. It's easy to quickly retouch pictures in the Photos app, also, for fun I downloaded Affinity Photo for the iPad and took a bunch of photos of my dog and "photoshopped" her into space, so yeah you can do that in the iPad too. The workflow is very different than that of the Mac/Windows versions, but not hard to learn. Affinity Photo also supports .psd and raw photo files. Music creation:For the sake of testing, I composed a few tracks in GarageBand, they are not THE BEST songs ever composed, I honestly know very little about music theory or... how to play any instrument, but my family seemed to like them... I asked a friend of mine to try it with a MIDI keyboard and he ended up making a cover with piano and guitars of the Soviet Union Anthem. It's a very good app and in fact there are many artists on YouTube who use GarageBand as their main music creation app, but I honestly think nothing here can really compete with Logic Pro or FL Studio when it comes to plug-ins. Video editing:So iMovie failed me the first time I tried to edit something, it crashed before I could import the video I was going to use. The second time I tried it worked, thankfully. I took a few videos from my last vacation and made a short movie about it. It was fast and easy but it could be better. Anyways, there are actually a lot of other people saying LumaFusion is an amazing video editor, I'll take their word, as I lack the funds and reasons to buy LumaFusion. 3D modeling:Something interesting about me: I want to study engineering, so I'll probably need to learn to use CAD programs. In my Mac I have been watching YouTube tutorials on how to use FreeCAD, I didn't want to lose the hang of it so I searched the App Store for a CAD-like app and Sharp3D appeared. It's very cool, I'll probably just learn to use it instead of FreeCAD because of how easy to use and stable it is, and then export to another format when I want to open something in my iMac. The only downside is that the pro version costs 20 dollars per month, but the free version will do until I really need to buy anything. In conclusion: The iPad is amazing and it can actually replace a computer, depending on what you do. Even though the hardware is powerful enough to run anything, the operating system still needs refinement but it's slowly getting better. For me, it's a perfect companion to my iMac and I can't wait to see what features Apple brings to iPadOS 14. [link] [comments]
Question about how to work with PDF's Posted: 01 Apr 2020 01:24 PM PDT Hello friends. I am a math teacher conducting online classes during the pandemic. I want to know if it is possible to do the following... I want to display a pdf worksheet of problems to my class and them select one problem from the worksheet to be displayed by itself on a blank page. As an example, if I am displaying a pdf that contains numerous problems, I want to select or "cut out" one problem using my Apple pencil and move that problem to a blank page to work with. Is this possible? Thank you for your help! [link] [comments]
Looking for a way to edit tags, location data and date in metadata of photos. Posted: 01 Apr 2020 02:13 PM PDT I use Apple Photos to manage my professional film photography work and I like to tag my scanned film with the correct location/date and add tags for film stock, camera etc. I'm switching to an iPad Pro setup for my travel computer and need a way to do this but haven't found anything. Any suggestions? [link] [comments]
[Question] How does iPadOS run on the iPad Air 2? Posted: 01 Apr 2020 01:36 PM PDT I know that I'm a bit late. I am on iOS12 right now, how is the battery life, speed and overall performance on iPadOS compared to iOS12? [link] [comments]
Buying a refurbished iPad mini? Posted: 01 Apr 2020 12:53 PM PDT I found a cheap refurbished iPad mini on FactoryDirect.ca (a Canadian company). Has anyone bought an iPad refurbished from a 3rd party before? It says it's "Certified Refurbished" [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Apr 2020 12:01 PM PDT Hello, I am considering buying an iPad (probably the new pro). While I am not looking to totally replace a computer (I would keep my desktop, but I would like it to replace my laptop that I use to work on the go), something I would absolutely need is to be able to present slideshows in pdf (created with LaTeX beamer, example) with a projector. Does anybody know if this is possible with iPad OS 13.4 (natively or with a separate app)? I understand that you can mirror your iPad screen (then I would just need an app which goes to the next pdf page without any transition), but ideally I would like to have some kind of a presenter mode (like a clock and the next slide on my iPad screen, and the actual presentation on the screen it is connected to). I saw that there is this tool that allows to convert a pdf to keynote, but it only runs on Mac OS, which I do not have. Apologies if this has been asked before, last iPad I owned was the iPad 2 (so things probably have changed..!) [link] [comments]
iPad 7 + Ethernet + USB peripherals: How many, and which, power sources needed? Posted: 01 Apr 2020 07:50 AM PDT Hi. I teach English online. I'm changing my setup from a laptop to an iPad 7+ ethernet + USB mouse + USB keyboard. (I prefer not to use bluetooth mouse/keyboard because I don't want problems with batteries running out in the middle of class.) I've referred to several resources regarding how to set this all up, including this very helpful post https://www.reddit.com/r/ipad/comments/8ibxe5/ethernet_to_ipad_how_to/ . I think I understand which adapters I need, but I still have a couple of questions about power. I believe I will need at least one power source of at least 12W so that I can both a) charge the iPad while using it; and b) use peripherals while also charging the iPad. The only peripherals I'll be using are USB mouse and USB keyboard. Questions:
Thank you! [link] [comments]
Am I the only one that thinks the mouse support sucks? Posted: 01 Apr 2020 11:29 AM PDT I'm rocking a Logitech mx anywhere 2S. The acceleration on the cursor movement is ridiculous, it makes the mouse unusable. The cursor either shoots past or slooowwwwwlly creeps toward what I'm trying to click on. I've had a couple friends try it and they say the same thing. I imagine it might be nice to use with the Magic Trackpad but with a mouse it's terrible. I couldn't see an option to disable the acceleration and the mouse speed settings didn't help either. [link] [comments]
Battery consumption Cellular vs WiFi Posted: 01 Apr 2020 08:43 AM PDT Hello! I am waiting for my iPad to get delivered and due to my circumstances having the possibility of getting connected to the internet anywhere is really convenient. So I went for the cellular version. When it comes to use LTE with WiFi off vs using WiFi turning off LTE, I have not found much info of the difference in battery consumption. I have found some information about the impact on phones but that is a different story because phones do receive different kind of signals to support calls. I am asking this merely because I am curious about it. People who have an iPad with cellular and use sometimes LTE and sometimes WiFi, do you feel an impact in battery life using LTE over WiFi? Thank you in advance! I could not find any video comparing it. [link] [comments]

Looking for technical drawing Apps for iPad Pro Posted: 01 Apr 2020 10:35 AM PDT I just bought an iPad Pro 2020 and I want to know what apps are out there that are best suited for technical drawings/product design. I work as a mechanical engineer designing plastic housings and I decided to switch to digital from my typical graph paper/pencil setup because I'll be working from home for the foreseeable future. I've seen threads from years ago recommending apps, but it seems like the landscape has shifted quite a lot in the past two years. So far I'm most interested in Concepts and Procreate, but are there any alternatives that you've used that you would recommend? [link] [comments]
When can we expect to see reviewers actually try the new Magic Keyboard hands-on? Posted: 01 Apr 2020 01:49 PM PDT I haven't found a single hands-on test of the new Magic Keyboard since its reveal. Do you think Apple has sent them to reviewers yet, or will we have zero updates about it before the actual release day? [link] [comments]
Apples' notification management system needs a lot of work. Posted: 01 Apr 2020 05:41 AM PDT So I recently picked up the iPad Pro 11. This is my first IOS device, I've been using a mac for a couple of months now after switching from windows but I have only ever had android phones. The way Apple handles the drop-down notification functionality is absolutely terrible when compared to android. For an Apple device, it's so unintuitive. On Android, when you get a notification you swipe left or right to dismiss it, or you click on it to open it. On IOS you can swipe left to open 3 different options, swipe right to open it, or click on it to (also) open it. It's just not streamlined in any way and it makes dismissing notifications more of a hassle than it should be. Aside from that, the dropdown menu in itself is pretty awful, it basically brings you back to your lock screen for some reason? For example, if I'm in an app and I want to check the time, I have to swipe all the way down covering the entire screen with the lock screen to see the clock at the top. On Android, when using a fullscreen app like when you're watching a youtube video, you can just swipe down a little bit and the time is right there, swipe down further and you have your notifications and quick settings in a transparent overlay on top of whatever you're viewing. Apple's system just makes no sense to me and feels like a massive oversight. Just to be clear, recently I've begun to love apple. After coming from windows especially. And I love my iPad, in spite of its' lack of customizability in contrast to android. But this is just a killer issue for me, it just feels not very Apple. I'd love to hear other peoples' thoughts, is there any workaround for some of the issues I've described? Is there actually any advantages to Apples system that I haven't considered? Thanks all [link] [comments]

Which is better for schoolwork purposes? (Using a 2020 pro). Posted: 01 Apr 2020 12:46 PM PDT
Posted: 01 Apr 2020 02:06 AM PDT Hi there. I'm a new iPad user. I want to save files on my Windows laptop, and then have them automatically stored locally on my iPad storage (not on cloud). Here are options that I have considered, but non suit me best: 1) Google Drive : files downloaded in iPad are not properly arranged (not in the same folders they are in Google drive). 2) Dropbox : Free user has very little storage space, 2GB. 3) iCloud : Cannot install on my company-owned windows laptop. 4) OneDrive : Have a business account bought by company, which I use daily on my Windows laptop. I just worry if I log in with this on my iPad, all my files (say 100GB) may be stored on my iPad and take up too much space. Unless there's a way to choose only one folder to sync with my iPad, and only that gets stored locally. Looking at these options, OneDrive seems to be the better choice. Hope to hear some advice from you guys. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
Looking for an app to edit and save bmp files Posted: 01 Apr 2020 05:09 AM PDT I am looking for an app for photo editing/creation that would allow me to edit and save images as bmp files. I am trying to pick up a hobby for which I would need to use my iPad to, among other things, edit BMP files and save them as BMP too. I was looking at the Affinity designer and have been tempted to get it, but after some googling I frowned when I realized it doesn't support exporting files as BMP. Does anynoe by any chance know a nice app that would have this kind of a functionality and would possibly not require a subscription? I would greatly appreciate any help from you guys!
