4 Quick tl;dr iOS Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 59)

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 12:02 AM PDT

Welcome back mah dudes/dudettes, hope you're having a great weekend :) Time for another weekly recommendation based on the mobile games I played last week.

This time, including an awesome new Tower Defense game that really takes a new unique twist on the genre, a good old "Toss" game not too unlike Burrito Bison, an open-world twin-stick RPG with a perfect monetization, and a horrible Game of Thrones game - who would've thought, eh? :p

Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 58 weeks ago here.

The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

    Let's get to the games:

Divine Legends [Game Size: 237 MB] (free)

Genre: Tower Defense / Strategy - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Divine Legends offers a unique new twist on the Tower Defense genre through multiple game-modes that have us take control of a main hero in addition to the usual arsenal of towers that we select before a level starts.

During combat, we can place towers on the map as usual, but the main hero is used to carve the path on which the creatures are going to walk - essentially allowing us to build the level itself. This goes for every game-mode, and adds a nice additional strategic layer to the game.

The game has a ton of singleplayer content, and progression happens through unlocking new towers and upgrading existing ones by getting enough tower cards from chests that we earn for free and can buy more of for premium currency. This does add a pay-to-progress-faster element to the game, but doesn't ruin the gameplay experience since the game isn't PvP-oriented.

There's a lot more to this game and I had a lot of fun playing it, so if you're looking for a game with a new take on the TD genre, this is definitely one to check out.

Rocky Rampage [Game Size: 267 MB] (free)

    Genre: Adventure / "Toss"-game / Casual - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Rocky Rampage is a fun and polished new side-scrolling "toss" game in the vein of Burrito Bison, Learn to Fly and similar old Flash browser games.

The goal is to get as far into the world as possible by first perfectly timing our launch for maximum forward momentum, and then strategically jumping as often as we can so we can hit boosters and avoid enemy traps slowing us down.

The graphics look great, progression is nicely paced, and monetizing through incentivized ads and unnecessary iAPs for coin-doublers, cosmetics, and consumables, the game is easily enjoyable as a free player.

    First Impressions / Review: Here

Throne Quest [Total Game Size: 71 MB] ($3)

    Genre: RPG / Open-world / Action / Twin-stick - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Throne Quest is an indie RPG with a huge open world, over 150 items and 90 monsters, retro 8-bit graphics, and twin-stick shooter-inspired action combat.

The game has us explore not only dungeons and the world, but also the game mechanics and items themselves, as there's almost no text in the game whatsoever. For some, this might be appealing, but I found it a bit confusing for the first hour of gameplay.

The core gameplay loop has us leave town to fight monsters and explore dungeons, collect loot, equip gear, sell the loot we don't want, and then repeat. The gameplay is fun, but I personally would have liked more skills and a stat progression system.

The game isn't bad though, and it offers a unique experience that is worth checking out if you're a fan of retro-looking RPGs with simple monetization systems ($3 upfront).

    Unfortunately no controller support.

Game of Thrones Beyond the Wall [Total Game Size: 1.34 GB] (free)

    Genre: RPG / Hero-collector / Gacha / Strategy - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Little

    tl;dr review:

Game of Thrones Beyond the Wall is a strategy team-based hero RPG with turn-based combat and many different game-modes.

Unfortunately, the monetization is horrible, with low pull-rates in the gacha mechanic, an energy system limiting our time with the game, and there's nothing exciting about the combat itself either.

The graphics aren't spectacular, there are no voice-overs for quests and cut-scenes despite being a Game of Thrones game, the animations are mediocre at best, and the game feels a bit like a rushed cash-grab. Yes, I really didn't like this game.

You've been warned - I don't think this game is worth playing.

I challenge you to find the perfect game for my preferences!

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 01:37 AM PDT

    Hey everyone!

I live a rather stressful life and need an IOS Game to be able to relax with (Sweden). I want to be able to put at least hundreds of hours in it without it ending, but preferrably I want it to have the nature of a never ending game. I have rather specific preferences:

    • Not heavely based on in game purchases
    • No Ads
    • Not Online Required to play or online based
    • Not stressful or overwhelmingly intellectually challenging. So no Temple Run or sudoku
    • No mindless Games where you connect dots or slice fruit. So not too casual
    • Built around progression. For example leveling up and gaining new abilities or building a prettier and prettier garden. I want to see those hours I put in mattering and making a difference in the game
    • Visually pleasing. I want it to look nice so it feels good to dive into it

These are not strict requirements but preferences. If something matches all preferences but has ads for instance, I'm open to trying it. It can be free or cost like a full console game. Rpg, strategy or simulation does not matter, quality is the important factor, not genre.

In short, the main idea is a game that lasts forever and where the progression matters. Hit me with your best ideas!

Do you guys know about a good screen recorder?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 06:05 PM PDT

I'm looking for a good screen recorder because the one apple provides doesn't record at a high quality. I would prefer the app to be free and have no watermark.

Anyone remember this 3D alien shooting game probably from around 2013-2015?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 04:04 PM PDT

My younger siblings swear that, around 2013-2015, I showed them this 3rd person or birds eye view iOS game where you play as a (human) boy and shoot aliens with a ray gun or blaster or something.

The character you play as is a blond or brunette boy, not Rayman or anything like that, and the character is apparently the only character you play as.

The game appears to take place on Earth. There's roads, houses, grass, and more visible. Aliens swarm in from everywhere. Spaceships apparently land on the ground and being more alien reinforcements. I don't really remember it myself, but they really want to know what the game was.

My sister's attempt to recreate what the game looked like where the dots are aliens.

The Day We Fought Space, a wreck-em up from Tursiops Truncatus Studios, now seeking playtesters!

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 12:09 PM PDT

Hi! I'm Cathy, programmer and game designer for Tursiops Truncatus Studios, a quirky, female-founded and run indie studio who has been making games in some form since the 90's.

Our most ambitious project to date, The Day We Fought Space, is currently seeking playtesters!

In the Day We Fought Space, strategize, explore, and respond to the environment and enemies around you while destroying everything in sight and reclaiming the earth. In a game more about reaction than rehearsal, improve your skills as enemies and weapons evolve in the procedurally generated world.

Upgrade and personalize your ship to best suit the mission at hand, while tapping into new weapons that impact your ability to take your enemy down. Use physics to your advantage, creating dynamic chain reactions to throw your enemy off their game, as you adapt quickly to minimize damage and maximize opportunities.

    Watch our teaser trailer here!
