    Apple TV Appreciation thread

It's common for a tech subreddit to mostly be tech support. "This doesn't work please help, how do I do this, Apple doesn't support such and such etc. But I want to do something different. What do you love about Apple TV? Are owners genuinely happy with the product or regret the purchase? I'm personally happy with my decision to buy Apple TV 4K. Image quality is great, plenty of apps, lots of options in the settings app to configure your TV and easy to use. Please let me know your thoughts...

    Apple TV remote lag

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 03:22 PM PDT

My Apple TV remote scrolling is extremely lagging when I am in apps. It is fine on the homescreen but in Netflix, YouTube, etc it takes like 10 minutes to do anything. Any advice?

Why do TV episodes sometimes open in the TV app and sometimes in their own app?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 03:10 PM PDT

When I select the next episode of a show from the home screen's Up Next carousel, Veep for example, it seems like half the time it opens in Apple's own TV app and half the time it plays in HBO's app. Is there any rhyme or reason to this? Or any way for me to gain control over how episodes open? Honestly I don't like the TV app because the interface while the episode is playing is very different and, in my opinion, more confusing to use. Plus, it tries to cut off the end of episodes seemingly arbitrarily to start the next episode, whereas the HBO app knows when the episodes actually end and waits for them to finish before starting the next one.

Irish ATV users - Up Next queue

    Posted: 06 Apr 2020 03:31 AM PDT

    hi folks,

Has anyone in Ireland seen similar functionality to overseas users, where non Apple TV+ shows appear in the up next queue? So far there's no crossover for me. Prime, Shudder, Disney+, none of 'em. It'd make such a difference to my Apple Tv user experience as an early adopter. At all, actually.

    Thanks a mill, stay safe.

    One-time payment vs in-app purchase?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 12:00 PM PDT

I'm developing a tvOS app that includes a library of relaxing audio soundscapes and meditation tracks.

Do you think it would be better to

    1. Release it for free (with 6 sample tracks) with the option to upgrade to the full version via an in-app purchase.
    2. Just release it as a paid application and avoid in-app purchases completely.

Do any of you avoid in-app purchases completely and prefer to just pay upfront for an app? I'm curious what people think the better model is.

I've attached a video below of a "free" version that includes 6 sample tracks. There's a "premium" tab which leads to the in-app purchase screen - but this could be removed completely if I sold the app for an upfront fee.

EDIT: Think of apps like Calm, except instead of charging €49.99/year for a subscription - users will just pay €3.49 once and have access forever.

Eligible for 1 year of Apple TV+ if buying used device?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 11:27 PM PDT

I was wondering if the 1 year of Apple TV+ is tied to the device, or just the account that's signing in.

Meaning, if I buy a used Apple TV, will I be able to redeem the year of TV+? Any experiences?

    Autoplay only sometimes works

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 05:56 PM PDT

I'm trying to watch a TV Series that I purchased through iTunes. Sometimes at the end of the episode the up next menu appears with a circle which automatically starts the next episode. I love this. Every streaming service does it, and it's annoyed me for years that TV Shows app doesn't do it on my Apple TV.

Unfortunately, it only works sometimes. Is there some setting or reason for it to only work occasionally?

Apple TV vs MacBook Pro for Streaming?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 06:16 AM PDT

I'm thinking about purchasing an Apple TV to watch Facebook Live streams. With all of the concerts shut down a lot of our favorite artists are doing live feeds on FB. Last night I tried to watch a live stream on the tv via my MacBook Pro connected to the TV via hdmi and it was awful. Constant buffering and freezing.

We live in the country and have a line of sight internet connection, we are heavy Roku users and never have any issues. Would there be any reason to believe the Apple TV would have given us a better experience than the MacBook Pro connected via HDMI?

Streaming Issue with AppleTV iPhone App

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 12:01 PM PDT

I have a Mac Pro with a 12TB HDD that holds my iTunes library.

I have 6 ATVs in the house on different TVs that is stream movies to from the Mac Pro library. Never had any issues.

Today I tried steaming a movie to my Theater ATV 4K using the ATV app on my iPhone X and it give me an error saying "The video is in a format that cannot be streamed to the TV".

The movie format isn't an issue though as I can walk into my theater and start the movie just fine using the actual ATV4K remote.

Is there a reason that I can't play the movie from my phones ATV app?

Is Apple TV 4k the worst Apple product ever?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 10:30 AM PDT

Apple has always been for it's simple to use and intuitive products. My opinion is that Apple TV 4K is none of these.

Let's start with the remote: Its nearly perfectly symmetrical design makes it impossible to tell which end is which when you pick it up in the dark. You have to be an astute user to feel the volume buttons on the right side are unitary vs the 2 separate buttons for pause/play and microphone being on the left side.

Then there's the volume control on the right side of the remote while nearly every other remote ever made has the volume buttons on the left.

Is it possible to make a remote that's more sensitive to touch? I'm constantly accidentally pausing or clicking or otherwise jacking up my viewing experience by simply moving the remote or inadvertently touching it.

Power down connected devices; 60% of the time it works every time.

Movie playback: When playing back an Apple-purchased movie through my hi-fi system the lip-sync is off so badly that it's distracting. FWIW, my hi-fi setup is Apple TV HDMI out to my preamp, then HDMI out from preamp to display. My preamp also allows for a direct pass-through to my display, which means that I can watch and listen to Apple TV content without power to my preamp. Interestingly, there's no lip-sync issue when using the pass-through method. And, yes, I'm aware that I can adjust the audio playback in my preamp's settings, but this creates syncing issues when viewing other content through my hi-fi systems, such as YouTube TV or other streaming services, or if I'm watching a DVD-based movie (yes I still have those).

Controlling where you can purchase content: I understand that Apple wants me to only buy stuff from them, but not allowing me to buy content via Apple TV from providers like Amazon or Vudu is petty and inconvenient. Why make me go to an external device, make my purchase and then let me watch that purchase via Apple TV? I get controlling what apps are available via the App Store for my iOS products is for my own good, but controlling where I get my content on my tvOS devices is just greedy.

Making me constantly have to reauthorize my device for other streaming services: Yes, I realize that this is probably more of a streaming provider (like Showtime) issue, but I'm going to blame it on Apple anyway.

You can get a Roku 4k Ultra $99, Firestick 4k for $49, Chrome Stick 4k for $69. The least expensive Apple TV 4k clocks in at $169. For that disparity in price, I expected a much better experience. Too bad I figured this all out after I bought 4 Apple TV 4ks for my household.
