    Need a new Mac immediately. Light video editing required. 1.3k budget.

    Hi all!

    I'm currently working as a digital/social consultant and PC has kicked the bucket. I was working on a 2015 MBP at my old company, and I purchased a Lenovo laptop when I left to pursue freelance work. My job requires light video editing for social (usually I use Resolve), some light photoshop, and a whole lot of writing.

    I tried out the PC- but I hated it. It just felt so slow and clunky compared to my Mac. I have a unibody 2012 MBP that still runs, despite the screen being cracked. I have to hook it up to my TV. I've been editing on this for the past couple of days but it's been a total nightmare.

    I need to get a new MacBook immediately, which right now is not the easiest task. Best Buy has both the latest 13" MBP for 1200 and the 2020 MacBook Air for 950. Which one of these would work best for my needs? I'd be most likely getting the base model of each as they're the only things available for pickup. I wish I could wait for the new MBP, but I just don't have the time to do so. I've heard that there are issues with the new Airs in terms of the cooling. Is it worth it, or should I go with the Pro? I don't want to spend the money for the Pro, but I will if the Air can't fit the needs.

    Thank you!

    What app should I use.

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 10:50 PM PDT

    So the school holidays are beginning for me and there are a few things I would like to do on my laptop. I want a list of them, which i can do on reminders but even at it's smallest I find the window is too big. and it will only be on one of my screens. (I'm one of the people with 5 different wallpapers on the same laptop haha) anyway can someone recommend an app similar to big day countdown but for a to do list?

    REVIEW: 2020 MBA (i3) - 1.5 weeks in!

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 04:07 AM PDT

    I just thought I'd post a quick review now that I'm 1.5 weeks in with my new 2020 MBA. I got mine the day it was released and couldn't be happier. I went with the base i3 in Space Gray and it's exactly what I expected.

    My usage - Safari, Mail, Messages, Office apps, Spotify, Discord, infrequent photo editing, and occasional Minecraft.

    Performance/heat: Zero problems. Runs cool as a cucumber after hours of usage, performance is also linear - meaning no throttling or degradation of performance after using it all day or night. I'm coming from a 2015 MBP 13" (i5/8GB) and 2015 MBA 11" (i5/8GB) and it's as fast or faster than both. Everything is snappy, multiple tabs in Safari aren't a problem on top of everything else I use being open - I'm sure it lags behind a maxed out MacBook Pro but for everyday use, this flies!

    Battery life: 9-10 hours easy with casual usage, unless you're pushing it or have the brightness maxed out all the time. Very pleased with the battery life so far as that's an important aspect of a thin/light laptop. I think the old 13" Air beats it only because of its massive battery, but the much newer 10th gen CPU architecture still delivers on battery life for my needs with the 2020 model.

    Gaming: I don't do much gaming, but I like to join a Minecraft server from time to time. A Mac is not the ideal machine for this but I sold my W10 laptop so it's all I have. My 2015 MBP runs hot and fans are full blast when I play, and my 2020 MBA is no different.. except I get more FPS and it's much smoother to play. So.. it's not better heat-wise, but it's not worse and even after a couple hours of playing I still maintain about 40 FPS which is great compared to 30 or less on my aging MBP.

    New-old Magic Keyboard: I LOVE IT. It feels like typing on my 2015 MacBooks with less key travel, I didn't like the butterfly keyboard so this is what I have been waiting for. The giant trackpad is also great!

    i3 vs i5?: +$100 for the i5 is an excellent value for sure, but the i3 handles all of the every day things just fine. I'd say go for the i5 if you think your usage might expand in the future, but if you're like me and it's for school/office work, watching videos, web/email, the i3 has enough horsepower and I spent my $100 savings on a case, screen protector, extra charger, and USB-C dongle.

    If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask! Now that most of the world is in a 'stay at home' state, I've put a lot of hours on my 2020 MBA and still look forward to using it each time!

    Hi all! Last night, I downgraded my Macbook from macOS Catalina to macOS Mojave. In doing this, my system storage is now 98 gb used out of 120 gb available. Does anyone know how to troubleshoot or fix this issue?

    MBP 13-inch 2019 heat issue?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 01:51 PM PDT

    I'd just like to ask, is it normal for the MBP to heat up? I usually use my laptop for Mozilla with multiple tabs, media streaming (Neflix, Youtube), and Spotify in the background. I notice my device heat up even with normal use, and especially when charging. Is it normal to heat up like that, or does my laptop have a heat issue? Also, I use a hard shell case from Speck. I don't know if it contributes to the heating of the device.

    Trying to keep a 2009 17” MBP going

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 01:17 PM PDT

    I currently have a 2009 17" MacBook Pro that is on life support and I'm trying to get opinions on if it's worth trying to keep it going.

    Last year I upgraded the hard drive to a 512gb SSD and put in a new battery from iFixIt. But I'm already getting messages saying the battery needs to be serviced again. When the graphics card is turned on it lasts less than 5 minutes before it shuts down.

    I'm currently running El Capitan which I had to install using a second hand source. And any other OS updates would require a workaround as well.

    I guess the only thing I would really need to do to keep it going would be to replace the battery, but I'm not sure if I'm going to run into the same issue of it going bad relatively fast. Does anyone have experience with iFixIt? Did I just get a lemon battery?

    I'm also considering downgrading the OS back to Snow Leopard. I want to install iMovie for my kids to play with, but the one from the install disc doesn't appear to be compatible with El Capitan and the new version also won't install on an old OS. So I'm kind of caught in a no mans land. I'm not sure if there's security worries of running a super old operating system. I'm getting close to pulling the trigger on a new 16" MBP to replace this one, but this one still feels like it could make a comeback so it feels like a waste to get rid of it.

    Can TH3 power Triple 144Hz 1440P Monitors

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 02:49 PM PDT

    If I use 3 different ports, can my MacBook power 3 144hz 1440P monitors? Currently I have 2 4k monitors and 1 1080p monitor and it has no problem pushing out, however doing the math, it looks like a 144hz 1440P monitor requires a little bit more bandwidth than a 60hz 4k monitor so I'm not sure if it will work.

    Best app to Cast video to Firestick on Mac?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 05:03 PM PDT

    Hi. I'm looking for an app to CAST video I pull up on a website to my Firestick on my tv. Keyword is cast* because mirroring pulls a lot of bandwidth and is usually laggy. Does anyone reccommend the best one? Willing to pay for the app, doesn't need to be free.

    Thanks in advance!

    Looking into buying a 2018 i9 15 inch, have a few questions

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 11:02 AM PDT

    So most of the videos on YouTube are videos from back when the laptop just came out when everyone hated it because of the thermal issues. I found a great offer for a 2018 i9 on Craigslist and before I buy I want to know if it's still bad. I'm gonna mainly use it for college, a little music production, a little photo editing, and a lot of gaming. I'm also planning on buying a egpu with a monitor for gaming, since the laptop by itself isn't so great at gaming. I'm a pc user, and this would me my first Apple computer. I don't know a lot about gaming on MacBooks other than they're not so great at gaming, there is a limited number of games that run on MacBooks, and a lot of people game through boot camp in windows. Is that right? And is the MacBook using its max capabilities while gaming through boot camp? Also I know that not all GPUs will work with a MacBook. Is there a good gpu that you guys would recommend that would work good for gaming through boot camp?

    This would be a first Apple computer for me, so thats why I have so many questions lol

    Asking the experts - Is anything serviceable on a 2015 MBP 13"

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 01:21 PM PDT

    I am finishing my bachelors in nursing this May. I freaking love my MBP, and it has been my rock. However, MBP+7yo exists+water = no more backlighting for keyboard, and the HDMI port is no longer working.

    I am so, so, so thankful that this thing still works. But I really would like to use it docked again. I also have not tested the thunderbolt ports now that I think about it. I hope they are ok.

    ANYWAY! am I total fucked on a new HDMI? or is it possible to replace? Thank you for any info you might provide!

    Resolution issues between 2017 NTB MBP and 30" Apple Cinema HD Display

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 09:27 AM PDT

    I recently was given a used Apple Cinema HD Display (with original PSU), however I am unable to obtain a full-resolution output (2560x1600) from my Function Keys MBP to the display. I am only able to achieve 1280x800 resolution after purchasing a recommended Club3D USB-C to Dual Link DVI adapter which has reviews stating it is fit for purpose and has documentation on its product page suggesting it would work. I am running on the latest version of macOS Catalina (10.15.4).

    I believe the adapter does work as when connected to a Lenovo Thinkpad t480s over both of its USB-C ports, the display functions at full resolution (2560x1600) with no issues.

    I've tried fixes posted elsewhere online in the following order:

    • Holding the option key to display additional scaled resolutions once clicking the 'scaled' button;
    • Resetting SMC / NVRAM / PRAM / anything else that can be reset from those guides;
    • Disassembled and inspected the USB-C connectors, given a clean and reassemble my MacBook Pro;
    • Installed a clean version of High Sierra to ensure it isn't a software problem (with the same result, now installed back to 10.15.4 using a time machine backup);
    • Deleted a display .kext file from Library/Preferences/ and rebooted the machine to no avail;
    • Used the options modifier key for the display scaling in safe mode and switched back to normal boot.

    If anyone has any guidance on what else I could do, please let me know. I'm at a loss and would just like the monitor/adapter to function as advertised with my MacBook Pro ASWELL as my Thinkpad! I am unaware of any hardware restrictions but if this is the case then apologies for the long wall of text.

    Thanks in advance!

    My question is it worth the money or should I save and buy a newer version? TIA.

    Macbook Air 2020 i3 vs i5 Battery life

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 01:48 AM PDT

    Hey guys so like a lot of people in this subreddit, I'm on the fence on buying a new Macbook Air 2020. This will be my first Mac coming from many years of using Windows. I've been looking around and doing some research and its really come down the base model i3 or the hundred dollar upgrade to the i5. What I would be using this device for is a school laptop for typing up essays or doing assignments online and simple daily entertainment use such as netflix or youtube. I do have a main computer at home for my gaming and more strenuous tasks so this would be my secondary mobile device. I'm leaning towards the i5 as its only a hundred dollars more and provides a quad core processor which should last a good while compared to the dual core i3. The only thing is since this is going to be my school computer essentially, I would need it to last the long hours I might spend some days at the school library or classes doing homework or taking notes. Now my question is, does the i3 provide a significant battery life advantage compared to the i5 version? I've been looking around and haven't found a thread or video that addresses this. I'm looking for personal experience from people who have used this advice. Another follow up question would be if its worth saving the $100 and getting the i3 version since really all I'm using it for is very basic tasks and I don't wanna overkill on the budget. A lot of the youtubers and media people really like to emphasize the heat issue but realistically speaking I think it won't be an issue for me on for daily regular use but let me know what you guys experienced! I know this was a bit long but please and thank you for the help!
