16” Macbook Pro or 13” Macbook Air? Posted: 09 Apr 2020 05:28 PM PDT So, I know this is kind of like comparing Apples to... well apples (pun intended), but there is a pretty big price difference as well as size difference and much more. Thing is, I changed my mind on keeping my gaming PC and having a Macbook Air as a daily driver. I decided to part out my system for a few reasons, but one of the more important ones were space and console gaming. I plan on moving soon after this pandemic settles down (if ever, it seems) and I really don't like the idea of having to lug around not only my 50lb gaming rig and all the different peripherals and packing the monitor so it doesnt get damaged, etc., as well as wanting a clean set up that takes up a lot less space. Moving forward, since I don't really plan on gaming on my Macbook, I feel like the new 2020 Air should suffice for what I want to use it for. However, as with anything that gives a lower end choice and a higher end choice, I cant help but notice the 16" Macbook Pro with a dedicated GPU and a brighter display with better sound quality (from the reviews Ive seen). That is not to say that its a cheap difference by any means. The current Air that I have on order which has not yet been shipped is an i5 16GB 256GB SSD model, and after tax and Applecare it winds up being a little over $1600. For the 16" Macbook Pro with 16GB RAM, an i7, and a dedicated GPU with 4GB of video memory along with the touch bar (which isnt a deal breaker for me), it would be almost $3,000, which is another $1400. However, due to parting out my system, I would have just about that more extra to throw towards a new system. The thing that keeps me up at night (not literally) about getting the Macbook Air 2020 besides the fact that its the entry level Mac from Apple (even with the upgrades), is that it may not stand the test of time. If Im going to spend $1600 or $3000 on a computer, I want to know that 5+ years from now, bar any unlucky hardware defects, that my system is going to be snappy and responsive and be able to do everything I need it to do, without melting (another worry for the 2020 Air) and without compromise. MacBook Air 2015 vs Pro late 2013 Posted: 09 Apr 2020 09:08 PM PDT Hi guys. So due to covid situation and being on a tight budget but in need of a laptop, I'm looking for older and cheaper used model. So which one is better, Mac Air 2015 11" or Pro Retina 2013 13"? Thanks [link] [comments]

Posted: 09 Apr 2020 02:27 PM PDT Saw everybody and their grandma talk about the butterfly keys and so far they've been working fine for what I need it for (3rd year design student) but was still wondering if there is anyway to prevent and/or fix the keys from being non responsive or too loose [link] [comments]
Posted: 09 Apr 2020 11:56 AM PDT I am looking at getting either the MBA 2020 or the MBP 2019. Which one will be better to future proof? I usually use multiple tabs at once and do mostly word, search the Internet etc. I know the new MBP is coming out soon but I prefer not to wait that long for it! [link] [comments]
If my screen is broken could I still connect my Mac to a monitor? Posted: 09 Apr 2020 01:17 PM PDT I've had a broken Mac that's been out of warranty for awhile that I've just been leaving alone. Half the screen is colored super weirdly. If I just connected that Mac to a monitor would the screen be fixed. Has anyone done this before? [link] [comments]
Switching to Data Science Degree - Which MBP Should I get? Posted: 09 Apr 2020 12:42 PM PDT As the title mentions, I'll be needing a new MacBook Pro that will be useful to me beyond just my schooling years. I'm debating between getting the current 16" version that can be upgraded to 32 GB of RAM or waiting for the rumoured 13-14" to drop and settle with 16GB. I don't mind overspending for an overspecc-ed MacBook, as I have been delaying my laptop upgrade for 2 years now. The priority for me is having the appropriate specs for the field of work I want to get into, as well as longevity (to a certain extent). Thanks! [link] [comments]
Are "must have" apps really "must have?" Posted: 09 Apr 2020 02:50 PM PDT This is gonna be my first Mac and it is arriving in hopefully a few days. Since I ordered I've been looking up accessories and stuff to do when I get it. This led me to looking up apps to download and there are quite a few (which start to add up in price because apparently everything now is subscription based?). I'm wondering how useful or necessary they are for the average user? I'm coming from PC and I don't feel like I did or downloaded anything special to make my time using it that much more efficient or anything. Just mainly played games or browsed Reddit/internet/YouTube. With the Mac, I'm bringing it to work and mainly will be just using Pages to make worksheets. No coding, no content creation, or image editing. A lot of must have apps are:
If you use these apps or any other you consider must have, could you give reasons why and how it helps your everyday use? [link] [comments]
My 16" MBP sometimes turns dark and very contrasty at startup? Help! Posted: 09 Apr 2020 09:32 AM PDT Sometimes when it's on sleep and I turn it on the colors just get crazy. I'll go to sleep and turn it on again and it's fine. Anyone have this bizarre issue? [link] [comments]
How to view photos from PC on Macbook via wireless network without using iCloud? Posted: 09 Apr 2020 05:29 PM PDT Hey all, I'm trying to help my parents, but haven't been able to find a way to do this without using iCloud for Windows. My parents are anti cloud for all their reasons I will never understand... After helping them research network settings and things on their PC for a while, I was unable to help them make their PC available under networks on their Macbook's Network section in Finder. I'm not sure what else to do other than showing them how to use iCloud, which they are 100% not going to do. A pain to work with really... Does anyone know how this can be done? They don't want to download the photos from the PC, they just want to be able to access and view them via wireless network. [link] [comments]

MBA 2019 overheats when using sidecar with iPad 6th gen Posted: 09 Apr 2020 01:57 PM PDT I only have a few instances of safari open and my MacBook is on a table but I was wondering if anyone else was having these issues [link] [comments]
Posted: 09 Apr 2020 06:21 AM PDT I have a MacBook Pro (Retina) 13-inch, Early 2015 that I still really love but want to make more useful through two storage upgrades. I'm looking into using something like this microSD adapter to add some capacity for largely static files like iTunes and Photos libraries. I'd also like to replace the factory SSD with one that has more capacity. For both additions I'm prioritizing read/write speeds, trying to utilize as much of the power available from the computer's I/O. I have these questions: This Apple support article describes how Mac notebook SD slots are connected via USB and are limited to a speed of up to 480Mbit/s. But following the instructions in the article I found that the Speed entry for the card reader is listed as "Up to 5 Gb/sec." Is there still some reason to expect that the speed would be limited to the stated 480Mbit/s? Would I be able to take advantage of SD cards that are faster than 480Mbit/s? I'm not sure how to find the bus speed for the SD host device and I'm trying to determine if it would be worth it to spend more on something like a UHS-II (or some other type of high-speed rating?) card instead of something slower that might cost less. For the SSD I had considered something like the EVO 970 Plus because of read/write performance. This was before I realized that the computer is equipped with a gen 2 PCIe slot (x4 lanes?) and not gen 3 as I'd previously thought. It may also be using SATA Express on the PCIe bus, but I'm not knowledgeable about this kind of thing. Is there a different SSD I should be looking at instead when considering the older drive interface? I understand there's a lot I don't know yet about storage tech, so I appreciate any advice on material to read or other places that are better suited to take these types of questions. Thanks! Best way to clean MacBook Air 2019 screen? Posted: 09 Apr 2020 06:58 AM PDT My screen has been getting really dirty lately and I've tried to clean with microfiber cloth and water but it hasn't been working great. Im wondering if a microfiber towel would be better? Also would a screen protector to help prevent this in the future? Any recommendations would be helpful! [link] [comments]
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) Battery Not Charging Posted: 09 Apr 2020 11:41 AM PDT I have a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) running High Sierra. I own a 2017 MacBook for regular day to day use but I'm planning on keeping this one until it completely dies because it's great for streaming shows (while on charge). Which brings me to the issue: the MagSafe charger is in. Green light on. Once it's in and powered up, the laptop works amazingly well with no issues. However, the battery doesn't charge. It stays on 0% and says the battery is not charging. Occasionally it will get up to 1% but the minute you take the charger out, the whole thing dies. The battery condition says it's all normal. Is this likely to be a charger issue or something more sinister costing a lot to fix? Thanks! [link] [comments]

I don't plan on any photo editing or anything too strenuous. Im wanting to get 5-6 years out of it if possible? How long do you guys think these will be going for in the future. Im wondering whether I should get the i3 or the i5 and used the saved 100 on accessoriess for it. Please lmk you're opinions. [link] [comments]
Posted: 09 Apr 2020 10:12 AM PDT Have a 2011 MacBook Pro which when I try to start it up recently only displays the SIL with a single glow then it goes off. Rinse, cycle, repeat. Nothing else happens. No chime, no beep, no display. No trauma, recent or otherwise, in recent or long-term, no liquid issues, basically nothing I could think of that could be a reason for this. Last time I was able to power it on I was I managed to do an Apple Hardware Test & it came up fine. No issues. Suggestions? [link] [comments]
Posted: 09 Apr 2020 10:12 AM PDT After a bad experience with a Windows laptop I started looking at MacBooks. However, I do read many complaints about the 2019 MacBook Pros. Bad quality, hardware failures etc. I have seen how the Air 2020 has a questionable cooling apparatus. I'm worried it will "fry." However, I prefer its conventional function keys. Also. I can't decide if 8gb of RAM is enough. I'm extremely apprehensive to buy any laptop now; this saga of researching, watching reviews etc has been ongoing for a long time. I would use my MacBook (if I decide to get one) for YouTube livestream, Twitch (all watching not streaming myself.) Some light photo editing, Zoom videoconferencing, email, browsing, grocery ordering online, some PDFs. Social media. I don't know if I would use it for gaming; I have a Mini 5 and a Samsung smartphone I game on but also PS4 and soon a Nintendo Switch lite. Also, I have a desktop PC with Steam. Help! :/ [link] [comments] |
