MacBook Pro 13 TouchBar cooling system

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 12:17 AM PDT

Hi all! I am wondering how safe is it to have my MacBook Pro 13" TouchBar 2017 closed while putting heavy load on it. If I remember correctly older models draw cold air from the keyboard. I noticed small slots on the sides of my MacBook which I assume are for getting cold air in from the sides without relying on having cool air from anywhere else, thus I think it might be safe having lid closed and working on my external monitor only?

    [Butterfly Keyboard 2019]

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 04:08 PM PDT

TL;DR Worth getting the pro 2019 instead of waiting for pro 2020?

Hi guys, hope you are all safe! I was wondering If anyone can describe their experiences with the 4th gen butterfly keyboards (in the 2019 model MacBooks). Anyone have any issues at all with it that they had/want to take to the Apple store for repair under the 4 year warranty, or anyone know anybody else who had a problem?

I got the 2020 air, but for me it overheats with certain things and I need to return and get a MacBook Pro. I see really good deals online for the 2019, but only thing stopping me is the butterfly keys. However I hear there are almost no reports of any issues specifically with the 2019 version. Anyone can confirm that? Thanks!!! Stay safe!

    Macbook Air 2020 (i5 or 16GB RAM?)

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 01:45 PM PDT

Hello everyone, im planning on buying a new Macbook Air. The base model comes with i3 and 8GB of RAM and 256 SSD. Im taking the one with 512GB but if i could only upgrade the RAM or the Processor, what should i choose?? i3 with 16GB of RAM or i5 with 8GB of RAM? And why?

I only use it for school (Microsoft Office, Google), I watch a lot of YouTube, and listen to music in the background while doing homework. Rarely i do some video editing. I also have windows in my Macbook air because there are some programs like Minitab that i cant run in MacOs which i only use when i go to class. I have been doing all this with my current Macbook Air 2015 with i3 and 8GB of Ram and 256SSD. And i haven't had any single problem so far. Thank you for your time and help!

Is this 2017 Macbook Pro(renewed) Worth It?

I'm in the market for a laptop, mainly looking at getting a MacBook Pro but I don't wanna spend more than 1k. I found this Macbook but I'm not sure if overprice for being a 2017 release. I'm mainly gonna use this for HW & basic programming. Should I wait till the refresh of the MacBooks next month?

Do Macbooks use the same technology for their speakers as beats headphones?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 11:49 PM PDT

I recently bought a refurbished 2015 Macbook Pro. After extensive music & movie streaming, i have concluded that these speakers are amazing! I have never had a computer with as good of speakers as these.

I was wondering, since apple acquired beats brand, do their speakers use the same or similar technology? I have definitely noticed a significant improvement in quality of the speakers in apple products since they bought the company.

Please help me decide which Macbook to get...

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 05:00 PM PDT

I know so little about computers. My 2009 Macbook Pro is too slow now to use iMovie... everything is slow. I've been told to get either a 13" 2012 Macbook Pro or a 2014 Macbook Air....or? I have a budget of about $500. I do music recording and make a few videos. Also... does it matter if it is i5 or i7? I have an external monitor so screen is not important, nor is portability.

Thank you so much for any help!

New MacBook Air - Is this normal?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 10:02 AM PDT

Upgrading from a MacBook to the new MacBook Air andi noticed something weird. Not sure if this is considered normal, so I thought I'd ask others for their feedback.

When looking at it from both sides, I notice the slightest 'groove' towards the front side of the computer where it connects to the bottom piece. From the middle to the back it's perfectly flush.

My old computer was pretty much perfect, so I'm wondering if this is considered normal or not for the new MacBook Air.

    2020 MBA BUYING ADVICE (RAM?)

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 02:21 PM PDT

In the market for a new MacBook after my 2015 MBP went out on me. I have decided on the MBA given that the butterfly keyboard is a deal breaker for me and I don't have the liberty of waiting for new MBP to be released.

Usage -- Primarily consists of word processing (Microsoft Office), web browsing (~10 tabs at once), running a couple of Apple apps (Notes, iMessages), and sometimes Spotify & Slack. I also have the VERY VERY occasional small personal photoshop or iMovie project (less than 5 times a year).

I am definitely planning on doing the processer upgrade to the quad-core i5. However, I am unsure if I should make the jump on RAM from 8GB to 16GB. I know more RAM is always better, but based on my usage, would you recommend making the jump to 16? Does increasing RAM increase the lifespan of the laptop? Is it a concern that 8GB won't be enough RAM for future OS releases (3+ years down the road)? Any other concerns/advice?

    TIA!

    My first Macbook!

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 04:53 PM PDT

I thought that I would share my initial thoughts and opinions of my very first MacBook, including my first full macOS experience. I will include what I like, what I don't like, and I may even have a few questions for my fellow readers. Keep in mind that all of the information contained in this post is based on my analysis so far, and is not necessarily the same way everyone will experience macOS/Macbook. Thank you, and I look forward to hearing from you guys/gals.

I own a brand new MacBook Pro 16" 2019 with 9th gen 6-core i7, 16GB DDR4 2666Mhz RAM, and 512GB SSD storage. The graphics card is also the base model 5300M, as I don't see myself needing the slightly better 5500M or more video memory; More on that later. I've waited about 3 weeks to get my hands on it, and I was super excited to finally receive it earlier today. Originally I had ordered the MacBook Air 2020 i5/16GB RAM/256GB SSD. However, during the time I was waiting for it to ship, I decided that I wanted to completely replace my desktop computer and all peripherals with the much more compact (in comparison) MacBook Pro 16". I did have to wait for the Air 2020 to arrive as it had already started to ship and I was not able to cancel.

I am very shocked at how beautiful the display is. I was expecting it to be spectacular compared to my previous TN panel (and a VA panel I promptly returned after parting out my desktop). Instead, I was completely blown away. I'm used to 27"+ monitors with high refresh rates and all the bells and whistles, but so far I am having no gripes with the smaller 16" display at 60hz refresh rate. I keep the brightness around 75% at the moment just so I can truly appreciate the colors while not cooking my eyes in my dark room. True to its name (Retina), it is very pleasing to look at.

Moving forward, the touchpad is amazing. I've had a few Windows laptops in the past and while they were in the budget-friendly price range (and the MacBook Pro is on the opposite side of that spectrum), the touchpads were terrible. Not only were they tiny (even on my 17.3" HP Envy), but they almost always clicked things on accident or overall were not very responsive and I felt the "need" to hook up a wireless mouse immediately. With the MacBook Pro touchpad, I can see myself using it all the time; The exception being during gaming sessions, where a true mouse will provide a more fluid experience. I really enjoy all the different gestures that are built-in as well. I try to use them as much as possible so I can get the true MacBook experience, and I have to say it does make getting around macOS much faster/easier.

It wouldn't be a proper MacBook Pro 16" thread if I didn't mention the keyboard. To put things into perspective, I am used to Corsair Cherry MX mechanical keyboards. It is definitely not as satisfying compared to the obnoxiously loud clickity-clacking of mentioned keyboard. However, it is definitely the best keyboard I've ever had on a laptop. While I am still getting used to the layout, I have no complaints. I can still hear it as I type and I don't feel my fingers cramping like some of the other laptop keyboards I have used. It is a very soft yet firm keypress, and it feels almost like typing on a cloud. I am NOT a huge fan of the Touch Bar, and I knew going into it that I would have to deal with it if I go with the current-get Pros instead of waiting for a newer model that maybe ditched it completely. However, it is pretty useful for changing the brightness of the screen, the brightness of the backlit keyboard, and changing the volume. Of course, all of this would be just as easy with normal function keys, but its a sacrifice I'm willing to make. It's not terrible, it's just not amazing.

I was primarily a Windows kid growing up. In fact, I used Windows exclusively up until around age 12 when I learned about Linux. While I occasionally would try to make the switch, I always felt like I was giving something up. Windows was just easy to use; I didn't have to use a command line for almost every task I wanted to accomplish. I also didn't have to worry about a few updates screwing up my operating system (with the exception of Windows 10, and even then it usually had something to do with a bad driver update). I'm not hating on Linux at all; I primarily used bleeding-edge distributions, so that could of been part of m issue. All I'm saying is that to someone who is looking to switch from Windows, it is a bit daunting to say the least. I want to use my computer, not fix it/update it/compile source. Maybe it just isn't for me. Windows was also great, until Windows 8 and up. After that, Microsoft stopped listening to its users and started developing an OS with a bunch of stuff no-one wanted or that you couldn't get rid of. The biggest issue for me was the "hidden" (not literally) telemetry and feeling that no matter what settings you chose, Microsoft still had control over some aspects of your operating system.

With all of that out of the way, let's talk macOS. It's different to say the least. I am still getting used to closing applications through the navigation bar at the top of the screen, as it is not as easy as just clicking the "X" button like I'm used to. However, it really isn't that bad and I almost prefer it just in case I were to accidentally click said button. The dock is really nice to use compared to the "Start Menu" and "Taskbar" combo. It feels very simple to use and looks very clean. One of the big selling points on macOS, more specifically the newer versions, is being able to sync everything from my iPhone with my laptop. I love the idea of being able to send things back and forth effortlessly and pick up where I left off. Installing applications is also very simple, moreso than I'm used to with Windows. The only thing that is a bit annoying is having to type in my password for certain actions related to system preferences, but it feels better than User Account Control and it is not nearly as intrusive.

Finally, I will include a few miscellaneous notes that I felt did not fit into the above paragraphs. The battery life is great, I haven't had to keep it plugged in constantly, but I've never had to do that with a brand new laptop in the past either. Only time will tell, I suppose. I have not noticed any performance issues, slow-downs, or graphical glitches. The setup process had an issue with iCloud, but it started working just fine once I booted into the desktop. The sound quality of the speakers is very impressive and another one of the main reasons I got the Pro over the Air. The MacBook stays very cool and I haven't even heard the fans once; I also haven't tried to push it either since Im still trying to learn how to get around before I start having even more fun. As mentioned earlier, the 5300M graphics are suitable enough for what I plan to do with the computer on the go. However, I do plan on getting an eGPU enclosure for my recently purchased Sapphire Pulse 5700XT, so when I'm at home it will be plugged in to a much more powerful, desktop-class processor anyway. I do plan to game on my MacBook, and this seemed like the only way to go about it if I wanted to keep a higher resolution (1440P+) and keep a solid 60FPS. I believe the 9th-gen 6-core i7 and 16GB DDR4 2666Mhz RAM will not hold me back from doing so, since they are much newer than my previous 4th-gen i7 4790k and 16GB DDR3 2400Mhz. I also got the base model for $200 less than retail so that I could feel better about forking over $300+ on AppleCare+ for my expensive new toy, in addition to getting the eGPU as that is another $700+.

I hope you enjoyed my thoughts and opinions of my first ever MacBook Pro/macOS experience. If you have any questions or comments for me, I will do my best to answer them. Any suggestions as far as applications that make life easier or enhance productivity are also welcome. I'm currently using AdGuard with Safari but if there is a better alternative I would love to hear about it. I will likely post another thread in a couple months after I've had more time with the system and have some experience under my belt. It feels great to be a part of the MacBook community finally; It's been a long road. I hope it is as amazing as I always thought it would be.

Is it a good idea to buy a MBP 2019 and return it when the 2020 comes out next month? (Read description)

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 03:33 PM PDT

My current computer is slow as a dog and it's pretty difficult to work with so I'd like to replace it as soon as possible, the base model MBP is what I'm looking at but I know the next one is coming soon. I'd like to wait as long as possible, but in the event that my current computer bites the dust before the new MBP comes out, is this an actual option? I'm not intending to do this as a main plan but I have serious concerns that my current computer will crap out lol.

Edit: this would be a last resort kind of thing not my first option, my intention isn't to abuse the return program or anything just to ensure that I have a working computer

This issue is fixed after restarting a few times but I'm wondering if there's a more permanent fix or if something else is failing/If there is a virus. Any help? Thanks

IMPORTANT: 4K monitor connected all the time through display port. Thanks in advance for your answers. BTW: My former MBA 2018 struggled with the usage mentioned and I returned it.
