My old MacBook never stops surprising me

    Posted: 02 Apr 2020 12:47 PM PDT

    Hi all,

My beloved computer that I use every single day is a maxed out 2012 MacBook Air 13 inch, with the i7, 8GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD. It's awesome, still runs great, but I never really appreciated how great.

A few days ago, my dad brought home a 2019 MacBook Pro 13 inch base model but with 256GB of storage that his work gave him. He uses Windows and doesn't really get how to use Macs, so he said as long as they didn't ask for it back, I could use it.

One would think that I would leap at the opportunity to upgrade from my 8 year old computer, but... I didn't. I used the new one for a bit and I was shocked at how similar it felt. Sure, the screen was incredible, but really... it didn't really feel smoother or even that much faster. At all.

I'm sure that the new MacBook would be incredible for someone with a heavier workload, but for my use (writing, schoolwork, web browsing, etc.) there really is no difference except that screen. Guess I'll wait and see if my dad's work asks for the computer back anytime soon. If not, I guess I'll make the switch, but really. There's no rush.

Which is pretty awesome for all of use out here with old Macs.

    Delamination?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2020 10:49 PM PDT

Please help a desperate man! I have to replace my battery, which I've never done before, and REALLY need guidance regarding the specifications of the replacement battery

    Posted: 02 Apr 2020 09:36 PM PDT

I've got a late 2013 14" model that I bought refurbished from the Mac website about 3 years ago. It works great but I'm getting a "replace battery soon" warning. The "About This Mac" menu says the following:

    • Model: A1502

    • EMC: 2678

    • Rated 16.5V---3.65A max

    • Contains FCC ID: QDS-BRCM1069

    • IC 4324A-BRMC1069

    • CAN ISES-3 (B)/NMB-3(B)

    • Serial - C02ML1HRFH05

    • macOS Catalina, Version 10.15.3

    • Processor: 2.8 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7

    • Memory: 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

    • Startup Disk: Intel Iris 1536 MB

    • Serial Number: C02ML1HRFH05

I recently asked a question on this sub about a replacement batteries and someone suggested a replacement with the following specs:

    • Capacity: 71.5Wh

    • Battery Technology: Li-ion

    • Compatibility Model: MacBook Pro 13" Retina A1502/ME864LL/A/ME866LL

    • Number of Cells: 6

    • Voltage: 11.34 V

    • UPC: 724190483183

    • Brand: JINJIN

    • Battery Capacity: 2600 mAh

    • Number of Battery Cells: 4

    • Compatible Product Line: For Apple MacBook Pro

    • Custom Bundle: No

I don't know what any of this means. I just need my computer to keep working since I'm under quarantine and it's my only portal to the outside world. Will the replacement battery with the specs I listed above work with my MacBook? If not, can you please instruct me how to find a battery that will be compatible?

Some of these batteries come with rather extensive "replacement kits" including screwdrivers, gloves, special wipes, opening tools, tweezers, plastic cards, and so on. I'm a total amateur. Should I spend the extra dollars for one of these kits, or can I plop in a replacement battery without special tools?

    Please ELI5

After watching this video I'm really thinking about canceling my order. I do a lot of work in Chrome and like to keep tabs and other programs running. Will we see a MacBook Pro 13/14 inch anytime soon? And will l be better off buying that one?

    Thanks in advance

Have a MacBook 12", nervous about upgrade to MacBook Air 2020.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2020 12:13 PM PDT

I use a MacBook 12" for work, but have a windows partition via Bootcamp so I can play games - nothing high-impact, Civ 5 and Civ 6, and Magic The Gathering Arena. When I play these games on windows, the computer gets warm, but not hot.

My question is: How well will a MacBook Air 2020 do with a windows partion playing these games? I've read a bunch about the inadequate cooling and I am nervous about upgrading. But I need another USB port, a bigger screen, etc. Advice?

Edit: I'd wait and get the new pro in June, but I can't reason out why I'd need that much potential power for the low level shit I do for the cost.

Suggestions on backing up a MacBook with Non-working Screen Before Sending to Apple

    Posted: 02 Apr 2020 04:32 PM PDT

So I have the 2016 MacBook Pro with the touch-bar (the worst model ever). I have had the worst luck with this one. My computer will start but the screen died on me. Apple is fixing it for me for free but I need to back up my hard drive. I do have iCloud to get files but I really want to back up the entire computer. Suggestions on how to get it backed up?

I do have a 2015 iMac and can use that but am struggling to find the right thing connect a thunderbolt 3 to a thunderbolt 2 male to male adaptor. I would run to the store to compare but that's not so easy these days and I don't want to order 100 different ones on the internet.

    Thank you!!!!

What fits my needs? Macbook Air or Pro?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2020 12:36 PM PDT

I currently have the 2018 Macbook Air. I bought the bare bones one and so far it's been serving me well as I just use it to go online or watch movies.

My son is 9 and with distance learning he will be needing to use the computer more and more. I gave him my Lenovo laptop that I got brand new in 2016 but it's really showing its age. It's huge and looks like it's from 2009 and is slow.

I'm thinking of giving my son my current Macbook and buying a new one for myself. I might want to learn how to code down the line, not sure if I will code full-fledged but it's nice to have that option. Will I need a Macbook Pro for that? If so, what specs should I look out for?

    MacBook for IT Student

    Posted: 02 Apr 2020 03:54 PM PDT

Hi guys, I'm planning to buy a new MacBook (Would be my first Mac actually). I need it mainly for Programming and studying. Also basic stuff like browsing...

I am currently going for the 2020 MBA i5 16 Gigs but I am getting concerned about the performance and screen size for Development.

Should I rather wait for the 14 inch MBP and pay the extra 700 Bucks on similar Specs (besides processor of course) or go for the MBA, what's your opinion? Do I even need the better CPU and cooling?

I asked in the main sticky and got nothing. So anyone want to give advice?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2020 12:11 PM PDT

    Hi all,

Looking to buy a macbook, I've had iPhones and iPads but never an apple computer.

Was big in PCs until about 10 years ago and then my PC was just left behind - moved in with my partner and no space for it.

Anyways, laptop will be for my use primarily, probably just going to be used for web browsing and bits and pieces like that. My partner wants to do more on social media so figured I would use it to create some content for her and no doubt kids would want to use it for homework and things like that. I might do some work on it but I primarily use excel and have found numbers tricky to use although I got the hang of it for formulas in about 20 mins.

I'd like the option of using it for "gaming" although macs were always limited in that but I see the pros are using radeon so maybe it's all a bit different now. Would this somehow be VR compatible and be a good purchase for that? Not sure if I could utilise it with some home automation stuff or whatever - trying to figure how to maximise its use at the moment to justify it to myself.

I imagine based on all the above the macbook air would be what I would probably want, but I dont want to limit myself to that and know it would be hard to upgrade or improve it - so have looked at the pros, dont imagine I need the £3k one.

What would you recommend for someone like me? If it helps, I was in 2 minds about just buying the ipad pro and keyboard in may but think that would be quite limiting and part of the reason I have thought twice about the macbook air is I dont want to buy something that ultimately ends up underpowered and therefore underutilised by me. Maybe I should buy a desktop or should I just stick with windows?

    Any advice welcomed!

    Preparing for a new MacBook

    Posted: 02 Apr 2020 07:22 AM PDT

Bit of a weird question here, but I figured I would ask the experts!

I just bought a new Macbook Pro and am anxiously awaiting it's arrival next week. I plan on using a Time Machine backup of my current MBP to set things up, but before I do that I was wondering if there are any "sanitization" or "optimization" activities I can be doing on my current MBP to prepare for the transfer.

For example, I'm uninstalling apps I know I won't continue using through Finder, but are there any other slightly 'backend'ish things (such as hidden caches or processes) I should be looking at as well?
