My review: 2020 MacBook Air vs 2015 MacBook Pro Posted: 02 Apr 2020 06:03 PM PDT This is my review of the 2020 MacBook Air. I got the i7 / 16gb / 512mb combination as that shipped the fastest. My first Mac I ever had was a 2011 MacBook Air and I really liked that machine, it was priced fairly and was an easy jump from a 2006 Inspiron I had before that. Eventually I really wanted the Retina display, so I issued myself a 2016 MacBook Pro at work with the butterfly keyboard, and tried to like it, I really did try but I could never get into it. Eventually I purchased a 2015 MacBook Pro (i5, 8gb, 256gb) from Swappa and liked that machine. I was happy with it until I tried to drive a 4k monitor with it, eventually I got a 2018 Mac Mini for that. My 2015 MacBook Pro has been fine, but it has hard locked up a few times recently, and I figured it was time to replace it. I know that the new 13/14 inch MacBook Pros are incoming, but I've always been happy with an Air class machine and I figured that the MacBook Pros would all have Touch Bars anyway, which I did not want. So, I ordered the MacBook Air figuring I could return it if I wanted to. I ordered it release day and it was delivered this afternoon. The build quality as you might expect is very nice. I did a series of benchmarks and tests, and these are my impressions. Keyboard The keyboard on the MacBook Air is quite good, I would say I almost like it better than the 2015 Pro. It feels responsive and I would say tight (as in well engineered...finally!), definitely less wiggle than the Pro, and definitely more comfortable than those butterfly keys. There is also less light leakage around the keys. The inverted T is welcome here, and the Touch ID is great so far. Display The display is nearly identical to the Pro to my eyes, with the addition of the True Tone display. Boot Time From power button to login prompt, the Air takes 23 seconds, the Pro takes 30 seconds. I do not use FileVault on either. JetStream Benchmark (higher is better) My goto for browser benchmarks is JetStream, and I ran it three times on freshly booted machines on Safari. Larger numbers are better. Air 138, 139, 122 (last result under load with other programs running) Pro 109, 110, 103 (last result under load with other programs running) Kraken Benchmark (lower is better) Air 883 Pro 988 Geekbench As predicted, Geekbench 5 (single, multi) (higher is better) Air 1135, 3078 Pro 798, 1718 Pixelmator Pro I did the super resolution enhance on the same image on both. I ran it a couple of times because the difference was astonishing. It ran much more smoothly on the Air. The Pro seemed to choke on it, even the spinning wheel was juddering. Air 12 seconds Pro 35 seconds Networking I ran several speed tests with fast.com, on an Eero Pro network with Gigabit Fiber on a leaf node. I believe them both to be about the same, they took turns in being faster in slower, but got around 150-250 depending on the run. I did the DSL Reports buffer bloat test and they both traded positions. I would call it a wash. Thermals I had a Flir One laying around (see images), but I will say that the Pro never spun up fans that I could hear, but the Air definitely did. It wasn't obnoxious by any means and it was low and quiet, but the fan turned on quite easily, during any sort of benchmark, and during the super resolution enhancement of Pixelmator Pro. This was not unexpected, but it was disappointing. That being said, the Pro got hotter, and the Air stayed cooler, as you might expect given the wattages underneath. The Pro has superior thermal management. I would not call it a deal breaker. Microphones and Speakers No question, the Microphones and Speakers on the new Air are superior to the Pro by a significant margin. I would rank it slightly below the 2016-2019 Pros and vastly superior to the 2015 Pro. The sound file is recorded from an iPhone 11 Pro. General observations Given that the upcoming 2020 Pros are likely to be more expensive and likely to have the Touch Bar, I'm happy with my choice and will keep the Air. I don't expect much of a game changer with the upcoming Pro, so unless it comes in a Touch Bar free variety and has a USB-A port and HDMI, I will keep the MacBook Air, and will be happy to do so. I typed this review on the Air keyboard and I'm quite happy with it. It may not be the best keyboard I have ever used but it's pretty close. It's also slightly louder than the 2015 Pro, and if I had to describe the sound, the Pro has a more bassy sound to the keystrokes and the 2015 Pro has a more high pitched clacking. How to FIX the 2020 MacBook Air to run Cool and Quiet! Posted: 02 Apr 2020 09:37 AM PDT

My neighbor gave me a 2005 PowerMac 2.7Ghz tower, and it still works. So now it’s a MacBook stand. Posted: 02 Apr 2020 08:53 PM PDT https://i.imgur.com/p7hZtz0.jpg Still runs but literally too slow to do anything and capped out at 10.5.8. Is there anything I could do with it? Make a server or something? [link] [comments] |
