MacBook Air 2020 for AutoCAD and Solidworks?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 04:15 PM PDT

Hi reddit, I was wondering if I should upgrade to the new 2020 Macbook Air for the purposes of running programs such as Autocad and Solidworks. I currently own the 2017 MacBook air with 128gb and 8gb ram, which frequently crashes (probably due to the amount of tabs I have open at once). I was planning to upgrade to the 2020 Macbook Air with 16gb ram and the i5 processor, which already comes with 256gb by default. Do you guys have any input on this? I was wondering whether or not I should upgrade now, or wait for a new pro model.

Been using my 2008 MBP heavily, every day, since I got it 12 years ago. Now I'm looking to become a remote video editor and I think it's time for an update...

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 09:51 PM PDT

I've been pretty damn satisfied with this laptop, my compatriot, my most used device, of which I'm typing on now.

    Specs: 15in display 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo processor 4GB RAM 500GB storage OS X 10.9.5

To be frank, I'm not much of a fan of Apple outside of their Macs (probably has something to do with me being poor most of the time). But the fact that I've used this thing daily for a myriad of applications for 12 years really goes to show that they've got good guts.

I first learned to edit on this machine on Final Cut Pro 5 back in my college days. But it got to the point where I could no longer stand how slow video editing has become on it. Even if I could assume my MBP is running as smooth as they first day I got it, the demand for video quality continues to steadily increase and my poor machine simply is not equipped to deal with the size of data for even the simplest of modern video projects, let alone compatible with today's basic ports or file formats/codecs (unless, of course, I update my OS with a major overhaul of all my softwares, probably losing many of them in the process). So in 2015 I spent the most money I've ever spent on anything on a brand new iMac (I was gonna try to build my own PC, but for the processing power I wanted, it actually wouldn't have been that much cheaper, plus I got a 4k monitor and a computer that's nowhere near as buggy as what my novice ass would've come up with). Editing on that beast is great, and I've learned how to use several NLEs with it!

Now I'm setting my sights on living abroad. I've been, more or less, training to live a nomadic lifestyle for the last several years, but this would push it to the next level. I think I'm experienced enough of an editor and filmmaking freelancer to make some money from it remotely while I attempt the unrealistic goal of attaining work visas in countries where I don't know anyone. But I don't think wheeling my iMac in it's huge Pelican case around farms/hostels/internet cafes/??? is going to work out.

I've read a couple comments saying that Macbooks have really fallen from grace ever since Tim Cook took over as CEO, any thoughts on that? That got me thinking maybe I should get a 2010 MBP, which I believe is the last one made under Job's supervision. Obviously, I'm not the kind of person who feels like they need the latest hardware (and I'd certainly like to avoid spending that kind of money). So this is all to ask, which MPBs of the last decade do you think stand out as being particularly good for video editing?

How bad is the butterfly keyboard?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 06:05 PM PDT

I am looking for a MacBook Air on a budget and Apple sells refurbished ones from 2019 with the butterfly keyboard for cheaper than the 2020 MacBook Air. Is the keyboard issue big enough for me to upgrade?

I'm so up in the air regarding whether I should buy the new mac book or ipad 2020,help..

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 09:39 PM PDT

So basically I have been a windows user for my entire life , the only apple products I have ever owned have been iPhones. I owned a 3g and 4s which I loved at the time. I transitioned right after the 4s to android due to my love for emulating retro games, my android relationship is coming to a close but that's for another subreddit. I am torn though currently as I am hoping to take some online courses, and do simple mundane tasks. On one hand the mac air seems to be amazing this year and I love the idea of a laptop. On the other hand the ipad 2020 display and 120hz have me enamored with the possibilities. I always hear you cant replace a tablet for a laptop but has this changed this year , and if so in what ways. I would love to hear people take on this.

    Entry MB question

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 08:53 PM PDT

Thinking of purchasing a MacBook in the near future and I have never owned one. Which type (since there seems to be a million different ones) would be the best for a extreme beginner? Year, model and storage space would be extremely helpful. I know they are costly but I'm not looking for the top of the line.

    Thanks everyone!

Paint wearing off (new) macbook pro keyboard

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 02:17 PM PDT

Other than cosmetic, it's not a bother. But I just purchased the computer a few months ago and already the S and D keys have no black paint on the middle of the key. I'm sure I've been using it more than I normally would with this pandemic going on.

Should I be concerned or it's not a big deal?

    2019 MBP gets hot

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 12:18 PM PDT

I waited a while after the 2019 MBPs were out to buy one, just to make sure the heating issues the 2018s had were resolved. Bought mine in November/December 2019. It's a 13", 8GB RAM, quad core i5. I don't use it for anything other than Safari (basically just Reddit, and occasionally streaming), Mail, and Messaging. In mixed use between sitting on my desk and sitting on my lap. It's typically very warm to the touch after ~30-40 mins. Is this normal? It's not like I'm even working it that hard. It just gets very warm, very quickly. I recently started thinking about it and I've not noticed a fan running when it gets warm, so perhaps I'm overreacting, but I'd like someone to validate my thoughts please.

Macbook Pro 13" Shutting Down Unexpectedly

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 02:43 PM PDT

I have a mid-2018 Macbook Pro 13" that I am using for work that has shut down unexpectedly several times in the past few days.

I have two Asus Zenscreen Portable Monitors (USB-C connection that can be powered from the Macbook or an internal battery; currently set to "power from computer") plugged in for a makeshift office set up, with one plugged directly into the Macbook and the other into a port in a USB-C hub, which is being powered by an 87W Apple brick.

Is this an issue of there not being enough power for the Macbook and all the peripherals, or is it independent of the monitors? I was previously using two independently powered monitors with no similar issues (but had to cede that setup). Any thoughts or suggests are greatly appreciated!

    Thinking about buying a macbook

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 02:23 PM PDT

Hey everyone Currently I have a Surface Pro 3. I have never owned a Mac. I have an iPad mini 5, and an android phone (I may switch to iPhone next, simply because I'm bored with android).

My main uses for a laptop are Photoshop and illustrator. I dont do video editing, but I wouldn't count it out either. Is a 2020 macbook air a HUGE upgrade over the surface pro 3? SP3 has 4gb ram, macbook air comes with 8.

Anyone else coming from windows? How hard was it to learn to use a mac?

Are there any benefits to get a 2019 macbook pro over a 2020 air??

I guess I'm just trying to justify this to myself. Is it worth it??

Thanks for listening to my rambling.

Macbook Pro 2019 cannot connect WPA2 Enterprise SSID

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 01:51 PM PDT

I just had my Macbook Pro 2015 replaced with a new Macbook Pro 2019. Now this problem occurs when i try to connect to our organization wifi SSID from home with a RAP (remote access point). This is WPA Enterprise with PEAP authentication (username and password).

When i try to connect it doesn't even ask me for the credentials. It gives an error it can't connect to the SSID.

This problem doesn't occur on my old Macbook Pro 2015 or any other Windows machine.

    I run macOS Cataline 10.15.4

Did they change something in the wifi adapters on the new model or is this some other issue?

Q: MacBook Pro 16 gets hot when downloading

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 01:30 PM PDT

Is it normal for the new MacBook Pro 16 that it gets really hot (CPU at almost 80 Celsius) and fans kicking in when downloading large files (4GB) with safari or chrome?

The area above the Touch Bar is really warm.

    Thank you for your feedback.

    Mac Trouble

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 12:51 PM PDT

My 2018 MacBook Pro crashed while I was using it, and for the past hour it's been showing a blank screen with a spinning globe, then shows an exclamation point over the globe and 'apple.com/support, -2101F'.

What would have caused this? I'm panicking a little bit here... should I contact Apple?? Thanks in advance, I'm not very computer savvy.

    Order still “processing”?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 11:25 AM PDT

I ordered a 2020 MacBook Air almost a week ago (3/28) and my order still says "processing". I was given a shipping date of April 7-14. I thought it was so late because of shipping issues with everything happening in the world, but turns out they still haven't even processed my order a week later? Is this normal? If you ordered a MBA recently how long did it take to arrive?

    Catalina battery issues ?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 09:27 AM PDT

Hi, I have a 2017 13 inch MacBook Air that I bought brand new back in December. I would usually get quite a few days out of the battery, but since updating to MacOS Catalina 10.15.4 a few days ago the battery is lasting just under a day. Is anyone else having this problem ?

Is this normal? "photoanalysisd" running everyday for ~hour killing the battery

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 09:04 AM PDT

I thought that this was an initial thing when updating my OS, then it would be gone. But everyday this process starts and runs for around an hour, and it kills the battery and my computer heats up. Normal?
