So, um, I deleted /System/Library... Posted: 23 Feb 2020 07:41 PM PST I was fooling around where I obviously shouldn't, but I think Finder acted in a really strange way and want to hear what you think. I was looking at Automator definitions (somewhere in /System/Library I believe, but not sure exactly where) and wanted to copy one to poke at it safely. I selected a .action file (or folder/bundle/whatever) and pressed cmd-c. I went to ~/Desktop and pressed cmd-v. To my surprise, a folder called 'Library' was pasted instead. I quickly stopped the copy process and sent it to trash, and authenticated with touchID without giving it any thought. At this point I got a bit worried though because the Finder window from which I had tried to copy the .action disappeared and soon Finder stopped answering. Along with the rest of the system. Now it won't boot, and I'm at a loss what actually happened. The only way I could possibly see this happening is if I not only messed up selecting the file (which I'm quite sure I didn't), but also messed up cmd-c and pressed cmd-x instead (which I also find unlikely). But either way, wouldn't I have had to authenticate while cutting, rather than while removing it from ~/Desktop? Do you guys have any clues? It's late now, but I'll try to take a look at the file system tomorrow and see if /System/Library actually is gone, what's in the trash, and if I can restore the system somehow.. Best setup for gaming on iMac Pro? Posted: 24 Feb 2020 01:45 AM PST So I've got my new iMac Pro arriving tomorrow. Specs as follows... • 10-core Intel Xeon w turbo boost up to 4.5ghz • 64GB RAM • 4TB SSD • Radeon Pro Vega 64X 16GB This will primarily be my workhorse for video editing, audio production, development etc. but I'd like to also use it as my gaming rig. I'd like to avoid dual booting IF possible so my question is this, will these specs be enough to run games on Windows 10 via Parallels? Or am I better off partitioning a terabyte or so and installing Win 10 via bootcamp? Unfortunately Windows 10 is a necessity here as a lot of my games are part of the GamePass Ultimate subscription. Posted: 23 Feb 2020 07:12 PM PST using Catalina on Mac book pro. One day Mac starts randomly disconnecting from home wifi network. It keeps happening over and over. Has anyone else has the same issue? Does anyone one know possible fixes? Any help is appreciated since this is super frustrating [link] [comments]
How do I get High Sierra at this point? Posted: 23 Feb 2020 10:43 PM PST I searched for it on the App Store but it returned no results. I found a recent link on the Apple support website, but when I clicked "open" on the App Store it said "this copy is damaged and can't be used to install". [link] [comments]
Cinema 4d Preinstalled on MBP 16" w/ Catalina? Posted: 23 Feb 2020 01:08 PM PST Quick question. I just purchased a new 16" MBP from Adorama, preinstalled with 10.15.2. When I was digging around in the launchpad, I found that Cinema 4D was present. I clicked and it opened, showing the date/time added in finder as the date/time I initially opened it. Is this a new thing preinstalled on OS X or am I going crazy (or both)? I had a demo copy of it on my last MBP, but have never owned it. I also found that trying to uninstall it from launchpad isn't possible (no "x" close button). [link] [comments]

User stuck with Sierra here, how can I use QuickTime or VLC to screen record *with* audio? Posted: 23 Feb 2020 08:15 PM PST If it helps, I've also installed BlackHole, but don't know how to use it. I followed the instructions on the github to set the multi output device as the output but no audio comes out, and videos refuse to play. Games as well. Edit: Model is pretty weak, MBP 2012. KiTTY terminal alternative that supports tmux Posted: 23 Feb 2020 09:50 AM PST Hello all, I am in the market for a minimal terminal for my macos installs, my requirements are as follows
I have been using iTerm2 up to this point, but in what might be a fevered dream I am looking for something else. On other Nix systems I use urxvt, which is no longer installable from Brew. I could build it from source, but I would rather use a prebuilt binary if at all possible. Does anyone have any ideas on something I could use? [link] [comments]
System Audio doesn't follow sound preferences? Posted: 23 Feb 2020 05:15 PM PST I am running macOS Catalina 10.15.3. Audi can either go to my Scarlett device(USB) or my monitor(HDMI). Under system preferences I currently have my Scarlett set as the output device. Audio from, lets say youtube or Spotify, all route according to the system settings I have (currently the scarlett). System notification sounds (imessage coming, bubble sound when sending imessage) all come through via my monitor. How do i diagnose/fix this??? [link] [comments]
daily average of some websites are more than 50+ hours Posted: 23 Feb 2020 04:16 PM PST I was checking my app limit on some websites, I found there are some websites that has average daily of 50+ hours, some even 88 hours is that because I used incognito when I visited those websites? or is it a bug? and should I be concerned [link] [comments]

Determining sizes of Time Machine snapshots with tmutil calculatedrift Posted: 23 Feb 2020 10:53 AM PST MacOS Time Machine protip: Then simply run on the snapshots that consume annoying amounts of space. In the example below, I can see that my November 9 snapshot is hanging on like a crusty old dingleberry: a delta of +32.077 GB as compared to the November 16 snapshot. Thus, if I delete the November 9 snapshot, I'll recover 32 GB of disk space. This is very useful if you've got TimeMachine configured to do round-robin backups among several targets of varying capacities. You might have a multi-terabyte backup drive that you never ever prune, but you might also have a .sparsebundle inside a remote AFP share somewhere (say, on another OS X system, or inside a shared Time Capsule) with limited space. In my example here, this is inside a .sparsebundle on a 320 GB disk inside a 2010 Mac Mini. The entire dataset is 94.781 GB, but I can manually prune it back to 62.704 GB by deleting the oldest backup. I rarely find this technique useful, but it's been a lifesaver sometimes on larger systems with humongous backup histories. The system shown here is relatively new and small. Note that while Time Machine will automatically delete your oldest backups, it only does so when disk space is extinguished — and sometimes you want to prune things before that happens. Also, sometimes you might want to delete a block of backups in the middle of the history. [link] [comments]
Hyperdock not showing Finder window previews Posted: 23 Feb 2020 01:21 PM PST Hi, is anyone still using HyperDock? The website version of the app stopped working and I just bought the App Store version and everything is fine except with the finder window preview. I can see previews for all my apps except for Finder, does anyone knows why? PS. If you know an alternative to HyperDock that works fine (not ubar), let me know. Thanks. [link] [comments]
27" External Monitor for MBP: 4k scaled to 1440 vs Straight 1440 Posted: 23 Feb 2020 01:05 PM PST I'm confused by all the options! Seeking out a good 27" external for my MBP that won't strain my eyes. Preferably Dell. I've read where a couple guys prefer a 4k scaled to 1440? Would that work for Adobe apps? [link] [comments]
Exporting battery charge level from activity monitor Posted: 23 Feb 2020 12:24 PM PST Hi! Is it possible to export battery data that Mac collects to create battery chart in activity monitor? I need data from few days not only last 12 hours. [link] [comments]
Emoji shortcut doesn't work - Catalina 10.15.2 (ctrl+command+space) Posted: 23 Feb 2020 11:55 AM PST Didn't understand how much I use these emojis until the shortcut stopped working... happened to anyone here? That's a brand new Mac (just been unboxed), the ctrl+cmnd+space shortcut used to work perfectly for me in the older models... :( [link] [comments]

Weird behaviour with NFS share and hangul characters. Posted: 23 Feb 2020 10:51 AM PST I've been trying to update a subfolder in my NFS share because it appeared empty (and it wasn't), it didn't calculate folder size, unlike other fodlers in the same directory, and even cmd-i would show "Calculating size" forever. I tried triggering finder update by creating a folder inside, but nothing would change - I'd just have a folder that only displayed my newly created one. SMB didn't have the same issue. After a while I noticed that all folders that failed to calculate their size had hangul characters in their name, so I decided to rename them. I hit 'rename' but decide to copy that name somewhere first, so I cancel it. What do you know - just entering and escaping folder rename mode made this and every other folder non-empty in an instant and with properly calculated sizes too. WTF? [link] [comments]
HDR Playback on external Monitor with Catalina Posted: 23 Feb 2020 05:01 AM PST I recently bought a USB-C to HDMI 2.0b adapter that supports 4K@60Hz incl. HDR (Lenovo 4X90R61022). I can even play real 4K at 60Hz (4096x2160/60p) with a MacBook Air 2018 and my Sony VW270 projector. Unfortunately I have not yet managed to activate HDR playback with it. With my Sony 65XE9005 it looks similar. With Catalina the support should be built into macOS. Or does this only apply to the TV App? With the TV app Apple seems to limit the 4K/HDR streaming to MacBooks that have a built-in monitor with at least 4K resolution. Is there a trick to playback HDR videos with any app on an external 4K/UHD monitor in HDR on a MacBook Air 2018? [link] [comments]

Posted: 23 Feb 2020 07:28 AM PST I'm new to Numbers and have a formula question. Is there a sub for just Numbers? Question: I want to do an IF formula that essentially says ' IF the value entered in cell B5 is in the range from 0-401, enter that same value in cell B10' Any help (or redirect) on this would be greatly appreciated.
