Looking for help with using an external SSD to boot Posted: 03 Feb 2020 06:13 PM PST Hey guys, to start off with, I'm a complete noob when it comes to computer stuff. I have a late 2014 iMac with an HDD that's running Mojave. I recently did a factory reset on it because it was running so ridiculously slowly. I don't do video editing or gaming at all but it would literally take 10 minutes to open Chrome. The factory reset helped a lot but I've been doing research and it seems like using a SSD is the way to go. Now I'm way too nervous to try to take off the screen and install the SSD internally. My plan is to buy a 500GB Samsung T5 SSD and use disk utility to copy from Macintosh HD and use the HDD as the default boot drive like how this guy did it. With all of that out of the way I'll just go ahead and ask some questions that are concerning me at the moment.
Thanks so much in advance guys! [link] [comments]

Posted: 03 Feb 2020 01:46 PM PST I apparently got this to fix. It was an iMac late 2009 21inches. It had OSX Yosemite. The owner wanted an upgrade of OSX so I downloaded El Captain. When I went for a clean install after making a bootable USB. It failed to install saying "failed to extract essentials pkg" .I tried it once more but still failed. Then I tried OSX Sierra which I booted from my macbook. It also failed after saying installing then it restarts and crashes. So currently I try to boot back Yosemite OSX with USB. It shows my USB and doesn't show my recovery disk but when I boot my USB, I get a kernel panic. And when I try to go recovery, I get a flashing folder with a "?" Sign. Tried looking up on YouTube but nothing works. I kindly request for help and support here how to fix all this. Thank you :( [link] [comments]
Changes I make on my android phone don't show up in MacOS Contacts Posted: 03 Feb 2020 07:55 PM PST I hate that Apple names their products so generically because it make searching for answers to problems much more difficult. That out of the way, when I make changes to my contacts on my android phone, they show up in my gmail account, but not in "Contacts" on my Mac. I've tried deleting the account and repopulating it, but it didn't work. I'm running 10.15.2 (Catalina) on my Mac and Android 9 on my phone. [link] [comments]
Unable to connect to wifi, says "connection failed" Posted: 03 Feb 2020 06:52 PM PST http://imgur.com/gallery/4IuwX8C Edit: I think I have found the problem. It's my dongle!!! What should I do now??? :( I've been unable to connect to wifi since yesterday, but all of my other devices can connect. Whenever I put the correct or any other password, it says "connection failed." I can connect to the neighbor's wifi but it would drop me. Here are the things I have tried:
(Will edit and add if I remembered other things I've done) The only thing that worked was after restarting PRAM, I was able to connect and Reddit for 3 minutes then it disconnected me again. This is seriously frustrating me. I can't give you an Etrecheck (I need to download) or update to Catalina because no internet, so I'm not sure what else I could do right now π I'm sure the wifi password hasn't changed cause I'm not prompted nor disconnected to my phone at all. Auto-Dark mode, 2 macs, different times. Posted: 03 Feb 2020 02:23 PM PST What gives with auto dark mode? The iMac changes around an hour before the MacBook Air. I checked time zones, adjusted them manually. Nothing. Sunrise/sunset are just different from the iMac to the MacBook. So weird. A clean install of Catalina on the 2013 iMac did not help either. Posted: 03 Feb 2020 11:19 AM PST Hey everyone! I'm having a massive problem with my iMac. Around a month ago, my Mac decided to start acting weird after turning on FileVault i.e. my keyboard wouldn't work in the login screen. After trying to make it work for a couple of hours, I decided to reinstall macOS but guess what. It didn't even let me do that. I got quite angry and decided to remove my Bootcamp partition that was still on my Mac even though I removed it a couple of months ago (don't ask me how it happened because I don't know myself). I was sure I was deleting the Bootcamp partition but when I turned on my Mac, the Apple logo wouldn't show up. I waited for around 20 seconds and saw this screen which was followed by this screen. Then, I realised I accidentally deleted macOS partition and tried to go to macOS recovery as well as internet recovery but neither of them would turn on. My original Mac keyboard broke a couple of months ago and I'm currently using a Windows keyboard (Drevo Calibur 71). I have no idea how to repair my Mac, hence why I need some help from you people :/ [link] [comments]
Can't sign in to TV provider (Verizon Fios) on Safari [MacOs Catalina] Posted: 03 Feb 2020 04:59 PM PST As the title says, whenever I try to sign into my Verizon Fios account on Safari to watch shows/sports online, the website authenticates my login but then immediately takes me back to the screen where I select my provider. Essentially, it's giving me the opportunity to enter my credentials and even says "authenticating", but it can never get to the point where it actually logs in - it's like it's stuck in a loop. I have absolutely zero problems on Chrome, so I'm wondering if there are any settings I can tweak on Safari to fix this? If anyone else is experiencing this issue or has found a workaround, I'd love to hear it! Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Feb 2020 02:52 PM PST I'm the same guy who bricked his OS while trying to do a clean reinstall because I formatted /dev/disk0s1 isntead of disk0s2. So I accidentally formatted my boot drive as case sensitive, and want to switch to case insensitive since updating from Sierra changes from HFS+ to APFS anyways. Is there any way to do it? Or is there any way to make a barebones version of MacOS to boot from a usb stick (not installer) to run iPartition? [link] [comments]
MacBook Pro thinks it’s charging, connected to external display and connected to Bluetooth. Posted: 03 Feb 2020 02:51 PM PST So these issues have been happening since I upgraded to 10.15.3 and me being silly I didn't backup before upgrading. So when I disconnect from my desk setup the MacBook still thinks it's connected to an external monitor, charging and connected to Bluetooth when it's not for any of them. The external monitor issue can be fixed by putting the laptop to sleep then waking it up again. The Bluetooth issue can be fixed by turning off Bluetooth and turning it back on. The battery issue can be fixed by resetting the SMC and/or the NVRAM. As you can imagine the first two I can do but restarting the laptop every time I unhook it will really get annoying. Has anyone been experiencing this? If so how can I fix it? [link] [comments]

Changing System Icons in macOS Catalina 10.15.3 Posted: 03 Feb 2020 12:55 PM PST Hello! For the past week or so, I've been trying to change my app icons, but I've been having trouble with the system apps (Calculator, Finder, App Store, etc.). Whereas in previous versions, you could disable system integrity (csrutil disable), and copy-paste new icons in place of the old ones, in Catalina it doesn't seem to make a difference. No method I've tried has worked so far. Any suggestions? [link] [comments]
Adjusting Schedule of Time Machinate Backups Posted: 03 Feb 2020 12:52 PM PST I'm looking for a way to schedule time machine backups so that they don't occur either during the day or while I'm actively using the machine. (I have a 2012 MacBook Pro and for some unknown reason the backups are now consuming +85% of my systems resources until it completes a job.) My assumption / hope is that if I can schedule the backups then my user experience won't be as inhibited as it is at the moment. I've come across this tool https://tclementdev.com/timemachineeditor/ which was recommended by someone else on Reddit (apologies to OP as I can't find the post) and it seem viable. Are there any other suggestions of how to adjust the backup schedule (or fix my system utilization issue)? [link] [comments]
Why does Safari take me to weather.com when I put a city name in the address bar? Posted: 03 Feb 2020 11:03 AM PST As per the title. Anytime I put a city, town or country name in the address bar the first result is weather.com for my home location. It's really annoying, especially as more often that not I hit Enter right after typing the place name. [link] [comments]
MacOS Catalina was the last straw for me Posted: 03 Feb 2020 10:33 AM PST For some reason my macbook pro began experiencing major problems as of last year. I swapped out the screen ($600+), then tried every trick in the book to get my wifi to work and eventually resorted to paying for an ethernet cable and adapter (1 didn't work so I had to go back to the store and buy a 2nd one, I got my money back but it was such a waste of time). The ethernet cable is uncomfortable when moving around my small apartment and moving my laptop, but it works... sorta. My macbook still drops the internet sometimes, but less times than on normal wifi. Alright, at least I can work right? Well I thought upgrading to Catalina would be the nuclear option to try and solve my internet problems. (My router is fine as my gf's macbook air works fine and my friend's Origin laptop worked well too) Catalina screwed up most of my video editing programs, all my majorly important files were backed up but can't be used so I had to convert them from .mov to a catalina compatible file... but 2 intro's and outro's that I paid over $400 for each are failing to work still. I had trouble with random programs glitching out, my laptop would randomly shut off and for some reason my battery won't charge normally now. It sometimes disconnects & reconnects every second. So I looked at battery cycles, and sure enough it was over 1,000 and I swapped out the battery. $240 replacement. Did that fix my problems? Nope. Still can't charge normally. I tried a new cable. Both don't work normally. So I took my laptop in for an inspection. At the iSpot store (no apple stores in Poland) they told me to buy a new laptop for 13K pln (3,343 usd) as they're like $500 more expensive in europe. I then took it into a 3rd party repair shop and they were confused with the internet not working. They weren't able to fix it. I'm pissed off that my original laptop that cost me $2k has cost me an additional $800 in repairs thus far, because I tried fixing the keys as well.. did I mention that my KEYS aren't functioning correctly? I'm sure part of the problems come from my laptop. But part of them definitely came from Catalina. I really regret updating, I wish I could go back but I just decided to buy a lenovo for $550. I'm probably going to sell my macbook as the maintenance is costing me as much as my car repairs were. In a country where the average person earns $400-500 monthly. I'm pissed off at the new Apple. I used to have an iPhone 3g, iPhone 4, iPhone 4s, iphone 5c (that EXPLODED) so I switched to Samsung after 3 of my iphone's had problems. This macbook was my first macbook just to see the difference between Windows and Mac. I enjoy Final Cut (even though it was a bitch to convert everything after the upgrade), I like the way it looks.. but the functioning is terrible. I used to be a big fan of Apple, but seeing the other people complaining about Catalina didn't convince me to buy another macbook. I'll probably use my gf's laptop if I ever want to play around with mac OS again. Not happy. [link] [comments]
OS X 10.15.3 Update: Trouble with startup disk and not recognizing password Posted: 03 Feb 2020 10:21 AM PST Posting this as both a warning and a request for potential fixes. Attempted to update OS X to 10.15.3 Sunday (02Jan) morning (from a MBP running 10.15.2 which was working well before the update attempt). The MBP rebooted to the flashing folder with '?" icon - indicating it cannot find a startup disk. A restart holding down the 'Option' key shows that I have two startup disk options: "macOS Installer" and "zephyr" (which is my internal hard drive, i.e. Macintosh HD). Seeing the "macOS Installer" disk likely indicates that the Update is still in progress, and I presume it should have booted into this as part of the update. Trying to login to 'macOS Installer' briefly shows the Apple logo followed by my normal login screen (which has the same issue of not recognizing my typed password). Trying to log in to the normal HD gives me my normal login screen, BUT the system will not accept the password. The login screen will eventually offer to help reset the login: "If you forgot your password, you can reset it using your Apple ID |>". Clicking on this option eventually/occasionally presents a verbose diagnostic error which contains:
Seems that the OS X update and FileVault may be at odds. Is it possible the update has corrupted both the filevault and user credentials? If I pursue using the Internet recovery by logging into the wifi network, and then use DiskUtility in the Recovery mode, then it does not list my internal hard drive (but only shows the current 2 GB recovery partition/drive). Anyone have similar experiences or have any recovery advice? [link] [comments]
Install Catalina from recovery mode Posted: 03 Feb 2020 09:46 AM PST I'm trying to do a clean reinstall of Mac OS Catalina through network recovery mode, but it only gives me Sierra, which means I will have to reformat my drive to HFS+ which will mess with bootcamp in the same way as it did when I initially updated to high Sierra. Can someone help me force recovery mode to install Catalina? I'm on Macbook pro late 2016. EDIT: I tried installing Sierra on an Mac is extended journaled partition, and now I get a circle with a diagonal line when booting to mac and i Edit: I managed to brick all of the OSes I had on the drive so I'll just reformat it with HFS+ and go with Sierra [link] [comments] |
