New Apple Store promotion: during February, get Apple Watch Series 5 starting at $299 with trade-in of Apple Watch Series 2 or Series 3

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 07:43 AM PST

Title says it all. Previously my 38mm GPS Series 3 traded in for $60, but as of today it trades in for $100. Good promotion if you were on the fence about upgrading to a Series 5 from a Series 2 or Series 3.

Apple Care vs. Asurion (iPhone 11 128GB in 2020)?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 07:53 PM PST

I know I've seen this posted before, but this time I'm bringing some extra facts - specific to my situation.

*I'm comparing AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss to Verizon Total Mobile Protection for the iPhone 11 128 GB

This is the information that I know:

AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss Verizon Total Mobile Protection
    Costs $12.99/mo. Costs $15.00/mo.
Screen damage = $29.00 deductible Screen damage = $29.00 deductible
Any other accidental damage = $99.00 deductible Replacement deductibles = $199.00 (assuming this covers Loss, theft and damage )
    Theft or loss = $229.00 deductible -
Additional Features/Facts: • Apple hardware coverage, including battery • Software support • Additional repair options includes Express Replacement Service • 24/7 priority access to Apple Support(Apple experts via chat or phone) Additional Features/Facts: • Battery replacement (and more) • Get expert help from Tech Coach • Same-day device replacement and setup • Replacement device could be new or refurbished. You may also receive generic accessories with lost, stolen or damaged claims. • You can cancel your coverage at any time and receive a prorated refund of your monthly fee.

AppleCare+ representative explained to me that I am limited to a maximum of two claims per 24 months, and that these claims are a combination of screen damage, accidental damage, and theft or loss claims (i.e. if I used 2 screen damage claims, then I am out of claims for that 24 month period).

On the other hand, Verizon TMP seems to give me 3 replacement device claims (regardless of whether loss, theft, or damage), every 12 months, and unlimited screen replacement claims aside from that.

For either carrier, I do not see myself paying for coverage for more than 2 years (i think it would be a waste of money to insure an outdated phone at that point). However, for the meantime, I do like how Verizon TMP has greater "liquidity," as in I can cancel at any time and receive a prorated portion of my monthly total.

Apple representative made a good point when he said that AppleCare+ would follow my phone to whatever provider I am on, whereas Verizon TMP would only cover me so long as I'm on Verizon. However, I just signed a two-year agreement with Verizon, and dont see myself breaching contract to switch providers.

That is all the pros/cons I have for each insurance carrier. To be honest, in my opinion Verizon TMP seems to be the clear winner on paper (in regards to deductibles, claim limits, etc.). However, most things I have read online (and iphone owners i know in person), suggest going with AppleCare. I would just like to get the Reddit community's thoughts, and see why they would choose one over the other.

    Thanks!

The annoying un-mirroring for iPhone selfies | unnecessary issues

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 06:33 AM PST

Got an iPhone for the first time last week( iPhone 7) and one of the first things I noticed is that when I take a picture of myself using the front facing camera in the stock camera app, the image is unflipped. I've gone through the camera app, photos app, settings and video tutorials, but there is no built in way to keep my selfies mirrored. On every android phone I've used, when you take a selfie photo, the image comes out like how you'd see yourself in a mirror. From a design point of view this makes complete sense. We're so used to seeing our face in the POV of a mirror, and it looks weird to see it from other people's POV (unflipped).

This brings me back to the iPhone now...why in the world isn't the mirrored image the default??? I get that the purpose is to show me what I really look like. You don't need to give me a long explanation on that part. But why would I even want that though? And I'm certain I'm not the only person who thinks this. Regardless of the fact it looks the same to other people, it's just visually displeasing to see your own unflipped face like that. Especially when you're setting up to take the photo one way, only for it to come out another way.

Why doesn't Apple give us the option to have selfie photos stay mirrored when they are saved into the gallery? Would it even be that hard? Please don't try giving solutions because I'm well aware of apps like Snapchat and Instagram that get around the problem, but that's not the point I'm trying to make. My point is why would Apple design their phones like this I the first place. It's just plain dumb when you consider user experience. Wanna show me the way others see me? Fine, but at least give me the built in option to see myself the way I've always seen myself.

Edit: a lot of people giving the explanation that the reason is that the image is from the phone's POV/other people's POV...I already know this. Not the point I'm making. My point is that apple doesn't give the option to set it how you want.
