iPhone XR Face ID unlocking with sister Posted: 23 Feb 2020 11:59 AM PST My sister managed to unlock my phone with her face, she's a year and a half younger, different color hair and eyes, and I'm a guy. I know that Face ID learns your face over time, so was it learning her face as me or something? Should I just reset my Face ID with my face again to prevent this from happening again? iCloud photo syncing on Macbook from iPhone, how to delete only from computer Posted: 23 Feb 2020 08:18 PM PST So, I have about 60GB of photos on my Macbook. I'm completely out of space, and I want to clear out of my photos. They're all photos that have been downloaded from iCloud, taken with/saved on my iPhone. Basically, I don't want iCloud putting these photos on my Macbook. I may just be an idiot, but it appears that if I delete the photos off my computer, it will delete them from my iPhone via iCloud, unless I turn iCloud off on my computer. But even if I do that, it looks like if I ever turn it on again, it will immediately delete photos when it syncs up, effectively wiping them from my iPhone as well. Can anybody explain this? I just want my iPhone backing my photos up to iCloud, NOT iCloud AND my computer. I have no use for these photos on my computer. [link] [comments] |
Mom's macbook air was hacked, need help/advice on securing/recovering it Posted: 23 Feb 2020 02:09 PM PST Hey all, So my mom called me this morning, she said she got a popup on her computer, saying there was something wrong with her computer, and to call "apple support", with a phone number. She called the number, and some people pretending to be apple managed to get the following things from her:
Eventually she got suspicious, put them on hold, called my brother, and then put him on the line in a 3 way call. He immediately knew something was up and started arguing with the guy. At that point it became obvious to my mom that this wasn't apple support, so she hung up. So far this is what she's done:
I told her to change every password in her keychain, and to call her bank and let them know about this because they will put a security hold on her account. The bank is a small credit union and isn't open until tomorrow unfortunately. I also told her to call apple support (the real one) and report this. Anyways, she's going to bring the computer over. I'm a software engineer, but I don't have that much experience with OS X and macs, I mostly work on linux/BSD systems. Here is my current plan, but I'd appreciate some advice from a security expert:
Do I need to worry about a rootkit that might have been written to the bios? Or the bootloader? I have no idea, so please if there is anything else I can do, let me know. Thanks. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 23 Feb 2020 10:39 PM PST So my old iphone 6s plus (very old I know) stopped working about 5 months ago. Since then my number got disconnected and I got an LG for now. The thing is, I cant access my iCloud because I dont have my old number and its asking for a verification number which I dont have that number anymore. And every time I try to reset it it says it'll email me the steps to my icloud email on how to reset it. I don't have access to either because my old iphone stopped working it could be the charging port or battery. Or both. However I just want to recover my old photos from California, my daughters baby photos... is there anything I can do to get my old account back? What would be my best bet? I dont have access to iCloud email or old number I would appreciate it so much because those photos mean so much to me ): they're priceless and I would appreciate anyone's help. [link] [comments] |
Music and sound cutting out randomly Posted: 23 Feb 2020 10:26 PM PST While I am playing the music or joining zoom meeting, the sound keeps cutting out randomly. Average once in a minute. And I only use the internal speaker. In zoom meeting when this happens, it says the system cannot detect both microphone and speaker(while sound is cut out), and it resumes after a few seconds. In apple music it cuts out and resumes a few times in a minute randomly. Is this the system problem and how to fix it? Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Keep documents sync'd via iCloud across devices? Posted: 23 Feb 2020 10:09 PM PST I used Numbers a lot. So imagine my frustration when it doesn't seem to sync to my iPhone overnight when it's on WiFi syncing everything else. Anyone know what gives? I don't like using data to download it every time while I'm out and about. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Feb 2020 09:01 PM PST (Early 2015 MacBook Air, macOS 10.15.3) Whenever I full screen a video on YouTube (I use safari) my cursor disappears and I can only use keyboard commands to control the video. I can temporarily fix this issue by 3-finger swiping back to the safari window (where I find that the URL is highlighted and the favorites menu pops up underneath the URL), clicking next to the URL to make the favorites disappear, then swiping back to my full screen video (sorry if this is a confusing description). Obviously this is not the biggest issue but it is quite annoying. Anybody have a permanent fix for this? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Feb 2020 08:48 PM PST My iphone X has a broken display, I cant tap it and its completely black, Its completely broken. My phone has this alarm that keeps getting snoozed because I cant turn it off, because I cant tap turn off alarm because I have no screen. This alarm just keeps ringing every few minutes and I cant turn it off because I cant use the screen. I tried to force shutdown but it just started calling emergency services. I also tried to restart it using the volume up, volume down, hold side button thing but that didnt work, and I also cant see the screen to confirm if it worked or not. (no apple logo etc). Missing AirPod case/find my iPhone issue Posted: 23 Feb 2020 08:47 PM PST So I was at class sitting listening to my AirPod in one ear, as I got up I must've forgotten to pick up the case and didn't realise until about 10mins later. So I tried finding it with find my iPhone and it will only tell me where my current one is until I put it back in the case, which I don't have. Does anyone know a solution? [link] [comments] |
Apple Official Cables vs Apple MFI Certified Cables Posted: 23 Feb 2020 08:36 PM PST TL;DR: should I buy an offical Apple cable or try Apple MFI certified cables which will be much cheaper? Is there much of a quality difference? After getting my MacBook Pro a few years back I decided to get a USB-C to Lightning for charging my iPhone X . Now I almost always charge my phone with the Mac power adapted (61W USB-C) as it is fast charge and charges much quicker. I've been through 2 of these cables (official Apple) so far as they start to go yellow over time. Was wondering if buying apple MFI certified cables would still work as well? I'm sick of buying the Apple ones as they are quite expensive. I was wanting to get a 2M one for my room but it's $55 AUD for a cable that's probably going to last for a short time and go yellow like the others I've had. My other option is to get an official apple one from Kogan for $35 which is reasonable or buy Apple MFI certified ones which I can get a 3 pack of 2M for $45. [link] [comments] |
Can the police authorities unlock my iPhone with passcode without me telling them? Posted: 23 Feb 2020 08:27 PM PST |

Posted: 23 Feb 2020 10:00 AM PST For example, I tried this one. I've also tried all of the others that come up when you google something like "change iOS backup location Catalina." No error message, no visible changes, nothing. I'm running the latest stable version of Catalina on a 2017 MBP, using a very large-capacity Seagate external drive. Does anyone have any ideas? My internal hard drive, unfortunately, is not that big, so I would like to reclaim some space. [link] [comments] |
Finder hangs when selecting 7k files Posted: 23 Feb 2020 11:54 AM PST Catalina latest update, MBP late 2013, 16GB RAM Not sure if this is a bug or some trouble with my files. I have a folder on my desktop with lots of stuff including 30k of cosplay photos mixed in different folders that I want to extract and sort. I use search to filter JPEG files (Search > filter by kind), then use Cmd + A to select all photos (but same behavior with click first photo > scroll to the bottom > Shift + click on last photo). After I press Cmd + A, Finder starts to use 250% of CPU and hangs with beachball, then in 1-2 minutes CPU drops to 100%, but I get a memory leak for up to 60+GB. Even splitting folders and searching in just 1/3 of total folders causes same behavior. Any ideas for a workaround or how to fix? Edit: doesn't seem to happen on High Sierra, so the issue is in Catalina most likely. [link] [comments] |
Problem wiping mid 2012 MacBook Pro Posted: 23 Feb 2020 06:51 PM PST So I'm trying to wipe and factory restore my mid 2012 mbp but it just won't. First I tried to power in recovery mode, wiped the machine then tried to reinstall OS X Lion. I was getting an error about not being able to download all the components. I made a bootable drive with Yosemite and the computer would not read it, but it worked on my iMac. I tried restoring to time machine then updated the os then wiping, then reinstalling the os, but that didn't work. The computer seems to only want to download OS X Lion, but I get the error of not being able to download all the components. I'm trying to wipe it to sell. [link] [comments] |
Damaged display on MacBook Pro - Everything else is fine. Can I use as a Mac Mini? Posted: 23 Feb 2020 06:28 PM PST I recently dropped my MacBook Pro 13" Early 2015 Retina Model. The only thing that's damaged is the display and everything else works totally fine. I've been AirPlay-ing to my AppleTV which has been pretty simple solution for the meantime but not the best for a permanent fix. Apple priced getting the display fixed at $475 which just didn't seam worth it to me - but its frustrating that its not fully usable now either. What I would like to do is get some kind of system or vertical desktop set up and essentially use my MacBook Pro as a Mac Mini - then I can just use a display, use my hard-drive on my laptop which is fine, and then a Bluetooth keyboard and trackpad. Does anyone know if this is possible? I would love a little advice if anyone has gone through a similar process before. Thank you so much friends! [link] [comments] |
iMac won't boot past the apple logo with a white square around it. Posted: 23 Feb 2020 06:10 PM PST I can't seem to find anything specific for my issue. My iMac won't boot, it turns on and the apple logo appears. However, the apple logo has a white box around it and then black everywhere else. What could these mean? I can't get it to move further (safe mode, boot from usb for a OS installation, etc). Any thoughts or other similar problems found with a resolution? I don't want to trash/recycle it, I feel there is more from this machine. 2011 iMac 27" [link] [comments] |
External Monitor not recognized post Catalina update. Posted: 23 Feb 2020 05:32 PM PST Hi all - I own a 2017 MacBook Pro which I have recently updated to run the latest OS (Catalina 10.15.03). Post this update, my MacBook does not recognize my Dell monitor. I am connecting via a Belinda VGA to USB C (Thunderbolt) dongle. Prior to this update, I had no issues in connecting to the monitor, and it is not an issue with the dongle, as I can connect my PC to the monitor successfully. I have tried the following 1) Restart/Shutdown with and without monitor connected, 2) Accessing Screen Recording under Privacy (no selections available), 3) Holding Option and clicking on "Detect Display" within the displays menu. Any help/suggestions would be very much appreciated. [link] [comments] |

iPad gen 4 iOS 13.3 GPS issue not finding signal. Can’t use maps or location on any apps. Posted: 23 Feb 2020 07:36 AM PST Recently updated iPad to iOS 13.3. Ever since I updated, it's unable to locate GPS services. It won't find my location in maps or any other apps. I made sure to go through the whole checklist of possible reasons. None worked. Reset locations settings and networks settings. Still the same. Reset the iPad back to factory, still the same issues. I can't get my GPS to find me. Also noted is that my XS max also updated and is just fine. I can't figure this out. [link] [comments] |
