The selected speakers should be removed from the Airplay 2 sources so it cannot be overruled. If you want to play music on those speakers you just select the Apple TV, that is smart enough to recognise that the screen from the television doesn't have to turn on.

TIL: You can see at what time the show/movie you watch ends; more info in description below

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 08:13 AM PST

While a show or movie is running and you touch the touchpad it shows you how many minutes passed by and how many minutes are remaining.

Now if you tap the touchpad again, the bar shows your actual time and at what time your show/movie ends. Can be pretty handy.

May not be new but I just found out today

Future 4K upgrades for current HD movies?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 04:30 AM PST

Not sure if it's been asked before in this group, but if I buy a HD movie eg Killing Them Softly or The Dark Knight, and Apple later decides to offer it in 4K, will I get upgraded to a 4K copy? I really don't wanna spend 25$ on Joker in HD when I could buy it in 4K later on

    Stuck on episode 6

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 04:28 AM PST

Got Apple TV on both our Samsung TV and a separate box but when we go back to The Morning Show or See on Apple TV+ it always reverts back to midway through episode 6 even though we are further into the series on both. Has anyone heard of anything like this?We never have any issues like that on Netflix or Prime Video as they always seem to pick up where we left off.

    Thanks

    processing power

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 12:16 AM PST

Just a reality check here, but I want to confirm what I believe to be true:

With an Apple TV 4K, I hope that its A10X Fusion chip, the 3GB onboard RAM, and the graphics processing power of the GPU will relieve processing power on my already-maxed-out and begging-for-mercy MB Pro with just i5 and 8GB. I stream news all day to a second monitor, so Hulu is contained within a window that I like to control in terms of size (sometimes a postage stamp and sometimes full-screen). I'd also like to continue to control the volume via the MB Pro keyboard with just an easy tap of the finger. But I'm really tired of the screaming fan.

So the basic question, will the ATV 4K give the laptop some rest?

I've been thinking about upgrading by swapping out the logic board on the MB Pro for an i7 and 16GB (still might do anyway), but perhaps just the Apple TV will suffice? (A $100 upgrade [ATV 4K open box] as opposed to a $350 "previously owned" logic board upgrade.) Will my laptop fan go silent by just adding this device?

How do I know if hdr is working?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 03:55 AM PST

I can't to it in my tv remote, is there supposed to be a HDR sign next to the 4K sign when playing a movie in the iTunes app? I only see the 4K sign even though my tv supports HDR10

Passing Dolby atmos through my laptop to my AV receiver. (Home theatre)

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 10:07 PM PST

Hi, sorry if this sounds like a dumb question but I don't have an Apple TV 4K but would like to watch my shows with Dolby atmos. I've noticed when playing the shows on a web browser that it shows "Dolby atmos" and "Dolby vision" My laptop is capable of passing Dolby atmos signals. So if I connect my laptop to my receiver through an HDMI, will I get Dolby Atmos to play on my home theatre?

Edit: I don't have a Mac. I just subscribed to Apple TV and watch the shows on my phone or my laptop(windows 10)

    Apple TV UI sucks?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 01:14 AM PST

I'm sorry if this post gonna come off as a rant, but my apple tv 4k ui is just crappy - from time to time it can get unresponsive and lagish. It was like that on 13.0 and nothing changed after updating it to the latest version (even got a new bug - it ignores left and right remote buttons in the app switcher). I suspect this could be because the box is outputting 4k hdr all the time. But then again it's one of the most expensive tvboxes out there with a powerful cpu/gpu and active (!) cooling. To add to the insult the UI very unintuitive, I still can't for the life of me figure out how to rewind :(

Has anyone else experienced such behavior? I'm thinking about selling this box all together, once my smart tv gets apple tv+ app.

New remote & new house / WiFi?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 04:35 PM PST

Hi. I am highly irritated and need help. Don't know why this has to be over a 30 minute ordeal.

I lost my Apple remote, then moved to a new house and got new WiFi. I now have a new remote but my TV just says "your Apple TV isn't connected to the network". So I try and hook use my new Apple TV remote right? Should connect as soon as I open the box. No. I click something on the remote and the receiver blinks three times.

I've unplugged and replugged. Anyone have any idea what the problem is and/or how to fix it?

    Thanks in advance. I'm annoyed.

Anyone else want ATV with cellular?

When camping in the rv I usually hit the caps on hot spotting. Wish the ATV had a cellular option. Thought about this when switching sim to a new iPad. Have a jet pack but it is limited to 15gig.

Apple TV Update Streaming ~30 to 40 mbps Previews

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 10:04 PM PST

Beware - In this latest update of Apple TV if you leave it scrolled to the top (for lack of better term) and it kicks off show previews it will constantly rob your bandwidth if you let it run. I just got an alert that we've used half our allotted 1TB of monthly transfer and it's Jan 6, and it turns out it's because we accidentally left that preview streaming.

Please help: Dolby Vision on LG C9 has raised blacks when watching with an Apple TV 4K

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 08:56 AM PST

Please help: Dolby Vision on LG C9 has raised blacks when watching with an Apple TV 4K

TL;DR: Dolby vision has raised blacks on my calibrated OLED C9 with Apple TV 4K. HDR and SDR has perfect blacks.

    MY SETUP:

    • LG C9 OLED 65 Inch, model "OLED65C9PLA" bought in Norway. Current: FW: 04.70.05. TV is Calibrated in-store.
    • Apple TV 4K latest iOS, Belkin HDMI 2.1 cable Dolby Vision-certified.
    • Netflix Premium and Apple TV+ subscriptions.
    • 150mbit internet connection

    THE PROBLEM:

    • Using Dolby Vision mode on the Apple TV, the black bars on top and bottom of high quality 4K Dolby Vision movies / tv-shows have elevated blacks and look slightly grayish (exaggerated in photo below, due to the cameras aperture, but still noticeable in normal content).
    • Switching to and forcing HDR or SDR on the very same movie, fixes it, and makes the black bars essentially pure black, the way they are supposed to look. PLEASE SEE PHOTOS BELOW.
    • I have attached stills from the Netflix show Witcher in a dark scene and used a Sony Cybershot camera on a tripod to capture the photos. I took a photo of the lower right corner.
    • IMPORTANT: The raised black levels are more visible at night in a dark room, so if you havent noticed it on your setup - OLED C9 and Apple TV 4K - during the day, try at night.

    PHOTOS EXPLAINED (photos, see below):

    • Dolby Vision: The dark gray in the film-scene blends into the "black" bar below it, and they are essentially the same shade of dark gray. The black bar has elevated blacks, instead of having the pixels turned completely off, as one would expect
    • HDR: Sharp border between the dark gray in the scene, and the black bar below it, but with small artifacts bleeding into the black border / black bar. Though it seems most of the pixels here are actually turned off, like it should be.
    • SDR: Pure black bar with no flaws in it. The black bars have pixels shut off, as one would expect. Perfect.

    WORK-AROUND and PROBLEMS:

    1. Calibration from the store where I bought the TV was professionally done and obviously did nothing for Dolby Vision.
    2. Resetting the image settings did nothing under Dolby Vision mode
    3. Updating the TV from 03.60.30 (preinstalled) to 04.70.05 fixed nothing
    4. Following RTings.com calibration settings for OLED C9 wasn't helpful as Dolby Vision "should be left untouched" according to Rtings.
    5. Increasing Dynamic contrast from Low to Medium and High made the black bars slightly better on Dolby Vision, but image too dark
    6. Lowering Brightness from 50 to 49 actually had a dramatic effect on the black bars, without making image itself too dim, so this is so far the best work-around. The piixels are still not completely turned off to make them pure black like HDR or SDR mode does
    7. Systematically going through all image settings on TV when in Dolby Vision mode did almost nothing to fix the problem
    8. There is no way to adjust black level on Apple TV when in Dolby Vision mode.
    9. Forcing HDR or SDR on Dolby Vision content looks bad, and defeats the purpose of having this TV.
    10. Trying a different HDMI-cable and different HDMI-connector on the TV did nothing

    WHO'S TO BLAME?:

    • Apple: This only happens on the Apple TV 4K box. Netflix has perfect black bars on LGs built-in app.
    • LG: This was a known problem on 2017 and 2018 models, where Dolby Vision would have elevated blacks on external devices such as Apple TV when connected through HDMI. A Firmware fixed it.
    • Dolby: Same as above, Dolby worked with LG and Sony to fix the HDMI implementation of Dolby Vision.

    POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS:

    • Watch Netflix on built-in app?
      • Not a solution, since I want to use Apple TV+ and my Infuse.app-media server as well, and Dolby Vision looks bad on these two. HDR and SDR looks great on Infuse.app though with perfect black bars.
    • Lowering Brightness from 50 down to 49 on Dolby Vision content.
      • Yes, as a temporary work-around this is somewhat acceptable, with a slight loss in image brightness, but at least the black bars are more or less black with this setting.
    • Wait for LG and Dolby to acknowledge this and provide a fix
      • That could possible take forever, if it ever happens
    • Wait for Apple and / or Netflix to fix this
      • I wrote them a bug report, but I highly doubt they'll prioritize it.
    • Contact LG customer support
      • I already did, and he had no clue about anything it seemed, and asked me to write an email instead. So I did. Let's see what they answer in a few days / weeks time.
    • Going back to the store with the TV
      • That's pointless. The TV is fine. Replacing it will just cost time and energy, and I will end up with the same issue on a new Tv-set.
    • Resetting TV to Factory settings
      • I haven't tried yet, but I fail to see what this will do, I guess as "a last resort", maybe I can consider this.

Any advice you guys? I appreciate all the help I can get.

Photos of a dark scene in Netflix 4K on Apple TV 4K watching The Witcher in various modes DV, HDR and SDR. Please look at the black bar.

Checking Purchase Resolution when Apple TV offers Netflix.

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 03:13 PM PST

Hi, I may be missing something obvious.

For the most part I love my apple TV, and at first I thought I liked the feature which showed me I could watch a movie with my Netflix subscription instead of purchasing it. My issue is, most movies on Netflix are not 4K or DV so some movies I really like I'd like to purchase. I found how to purchase instead but the apple UI appears to give you no indication if the film is 4k and DV, if just says its HD resolution as per Netflix.

Is there a way for it to default to the purchase options, showing the res and DV, with an option to load Netflix if I prefer?

Anyone use the HD Homerun Scribe DVR?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 03:09 PM PST

I'm interested in getting an OTA DVR, and I see that the Homerun Scribe has built-in storage.

I'm not seeing much documentation on how the existing solutions (Plex, Channels) would integrate with the Scribe's built-in DVR.

Does anyone have a "Live TV + DVR" on Apple TV setup they love?
