Password protected external hard drive??? Posted: 06 Jan 2020 07:06 PM PST What is the best way to lock an external hard drive that works on both MacOS and Windows???? [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Jan 2020 07:04 PM PST I tried out MacOS for a month. I installed ZSH and installed brew and got packages such as wget, etc. It's been fun. Then, I did the same exact thing on Windows 10. I keep hearing that the MacOS linux experience is better. How so? What makes WSL inferior? [link] [comments]
Requesting some guidance on converting + saving Apple Unified Logs Posted: 06 Jan 2020 03:27 PM PST We need to be able to log some Mac events into Splunk. I am not great on Mac forensics but through my research, I've discovered this new proprietary binary database that Apple runs. It generates a LOT of logs (most of which we do not need.) I just need something simple like "logon" events but even these are stripped of useful information like usernames for auditing. Running
saves your desired timeframe and events into a .tracev3 file in /var/db/diagnostics/persist from what I can tell. There are some other parameters needed to be set when using log show that I am playing with. Ideally, we would script a simple way for hosts to archive logons every 24 hours then --style syslog and forward that into Splunk. I am having difficulty just using Console to read anything I generate. It displays random characters if I save to a syslog format or just the default tracev3. Has anyone been able to get basic logging done from Mac hosts in an enterprise environment? thanks [link] [comments]
Connect to a WiFi network with WiFi disabled? Posted: 07 Jan 2020 01:50 AM PST Hi everyone, I know the title sounds really stupid but hear me out. We have MacOS (Mojave 10.14.6) at work and they disabled the WiFi (forcing an Ethernet connection). I don't have the admin credentials so I can't enable it again. Is there a way for me to connect to a WiFi network even without this setting enabled. I know it sounds dumb af but I'm trying. Maybe it could work with an external WiFi USB drive? Thanks everyone for your help. [link] [comments]
Open Network Port in Catalina (10.15.2)?? Posted: 07 Jan 2020 01:38 AM PST I'm trying to open port UDP/2333 for a program on my home network but it's not working. I've tried turning off the firewall on my MBP and the port is still showing blocked: I've modified the pf.conf file as well and rebooted the machine and it still won't show as open when I run an Nmap. Port UDP/2333 is not receiving anything. TCPDump shows the traffic though. The MBP IP is 192.168.5.90. Also, reviewing a PCAP from Wireshark shows the packet arriving and the reject being sent back for a closed port. From pf.conf: What am I missing? [link] [comments]

Are there any steam games that are supported by macOS Catalina (64-bit)? Posted: 06 Jan 2020 06:16 AM PST I can't downgrade back to Mojave, and have some issues with Parallels desktop as well as bootcamp. But I'm wondering if anyone knows any steam games that are 64-bit or playable on Catalina. Would love to know! [link] [comments]
Mac equivalent to WinMerge or Paint.net? Posted: 06 Jan 2020 06:03 PM PST I've been using Macs for about seven years and want to transition entirely to Mac having used Windows for decades. But there's one piece of software indispensable to me that I haven't found a decent alternative to, which is WinMerge. I've tried FileMerge from Xcode but its detection abilities are poor. DiffMerge has a lackluster interface. There seems to be no consensus on a single software, perhaps because its usage is rather specialized. Paint.NET is another one that has no Mac equivalent. Does anyone have any recommendations? [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Jan 2020 08:43 AM PST I'm still running Mojave and don't intend to update to Catalina anytime soon. But as a developer I will eventually be forced to. I'm curious what 32-bit software still exists on my mac. That includes applications, but also frameworks, dynamic libraries, bundles, VST and Audio-unit plug-ins, and so on. This means that using System Information is not adequate as it only lists applications. Is there a tool that can search my drives and list them all? [link] [comments]
Anyone Have Issue With LaunchPad and Text Being Doubled/Inserted From Other Locations In OS Posted: 06 Jan 2020 12:48 PM PST I'm having this issue on the newest release of Catalina. If I activate LaunchPad, it will already have text. If I try to add text, it will exponentially add text to the textbox (aabbccdddd) for example. Also if you're scrolling from left to right, it will skip even numbered pages. [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Jan 2020 09:36 AM PST I just bought the Mac Mini (i3) 2018 model. But 4K MKV via VLC player and movies from Apple TV+ have minimal log / stutter. I have connected the mini to my Samsung 65" TV via HDMI and no scale setting on the Mac. What could be the problem? If I stream from the Mac to Apple TV no issues at all over WiFi :( [link] [comments]

Is there a "draw on the screen" app that works with Xcode for people recording the screen? Posted: 06 Jan 2020 06:35 AM PST I'm looking for something that can draw inside of Xcode or on the screen in general for when you're doing a screen recording. We've all seen postings on YouTube that have Xcode and they're talking about the source code and it's hard to see things. I'm wondering if anyone knows of an app that would treat the screen like a while board so that you can mark things up while recording the video. If not, maybe a way to have a big mouse cursor in some custom color so you have wave it around at different spots on the screen. [link] [comments]
What's the deal with applications "not being run from application folder" even though they are... Posted: 06 Jan 2020 07:31 AM PST I've had the unfortunate pleasure of setting up a mac from scratch 3 times in the past year and a half. The past two times I've been installing my programs like usual... but around a quarter to half of them complain that they're not being run in the applications folder. I then have to move them to the desktop, and then move back into the Applications folder. Now I'm even setting up my vscode editor, and I'm noticing a _plugin_ from vscode is complaining that my vscode is not being run from the Applications folder. I had to disable that plugin so it would stop sending me that message inside of vscode. What the hell happened between presumably High Sierra -> Mojave -> Catalina that is causing all this weirdness? Is it Apple's issue? Is it developers of these apps issue? What's going on? The first time it happens it was a LOT of apps, now it seems to have been far less. But still super annoying. Anything wrong with backing up KeyChain to iCloud? Posted: 06 Jan 2020 09:07 AM PST I used to use LastPass/Firefox but I find that KeyChain/Safari is getting easier for me to use. I want to wipe my Macbook 2015 Retina and reinstall clean - is there anything wrong with just backing up to iCloud? [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Jan 2020 04:59 AM PST Hey guys, I hope that I'm correct posting my issue in this subreddit, if not please let me know the according sub. My problem is that I've got a second Macbook from work which I can also use privately. Are there any issues reported by Apple regarding Apple Mail on MacOS Catalina (10.15.2)? Thank you [link] [comments]
Catalina homebrew read-only problem Posted: 06 Jan 2020 06:48 AM PST Hi all, I've freshly installed Catalina on my new M.2 and everything is fine except that when I try to run brew service restart httpd it gives me error for read-only. I've disabled SIP and mounted partition as rw, but it's until reboot. Is there any way it can work without manually mounting it rw? Thanks in forward. [link] [comments]
Now that Hands Off is officially sh*t... Posted: 06 Jan 2020 12:45 PM PST That would cause endless kernel panics under Mojave, doesn't work at all with Catalina, and developers aren't returning emails... What are people using with Catalina? [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Jan 2020 06:31 AM PST I'm asking as that has the full license on it. Would it work with Mac devices? [link] [comments] |
