Help my MacBook Air won’t turn on!

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 09:41 PM PST

I left my MacBook opened with indirect light hitting it for about 2 days. I come back to it and then it won't turn on. I've already tried the control+option+shift+power button and the command+option+r+p. I also plugged in the charger and the light turned on in the charger but still nothing for my MacBook

Anyone else having this bluetooth connection issue? Always passively connected and cannot remove - I've never connected to this 4a-53-96-85-58-7a device. Directly after 10.15.2 update on early 2015 Macbook Air.

Any thoughts on purchasing a non-Apple Macbook charger?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 08:19 PM PST

Basically the caption. I'm in need of a new charger. I was planning on buying a new one from Apple for $80, but then I looked up on Amazon and saw that they sell chargers that range from $20-40 or so. So basically now I'm wondering if there's any harm in buying a non-Apple charger to save a decent bit of money? It seems quite often people use non-Apple chargers for their phones, so I didn't know if this is okay too for the Macbook. Thanks in advance for your opinions :)

(PS sorry in advance if this is a dumb question, I don't know a ton about computers lol!)

    Question regarding iCloud photos

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 08:17 PM PST

Not sure if this is an option or not, however I would like my photos to remain in iCloud and not physically stored on my macs hard drive. I've googled and can't seem to find anything explaining if this can be done, all I've been able to find is when my macs storage is full to optimize my photos, any help is greatly appreciated.

    2017 Macbook 12” or 2015 Macbook Pro 15”

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 10:26 AM PST

Hey guys, so basically I am buying an used laptop and I have selected these 2 candidates:

    2017 Macbook 12"

    • 512 Gb SSD

    • 16 Gb RAM

    • Dual core i7 7th gen @1.4 Ghz

    • Retina screen

    2015 Macbook Pro 15"

    • 512 Gb SSD

    • 16 Gb RAM

    • Quad core i7 4th gen @2.5 GHz

    • Retina screen

I work as an engineer in data analysis and signal processing if this is useful for you to advise me. I like the portability of the 12" but I am concerned with its capacity to process medium datasets and train models.

Been searching online for a couple of days but I am not able to decide. Any advise would be appreaciated. Cheers!

My new MacBook Pro is a MacBook Air

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 05:42 PM PST

Yeah, so a few days ago I bought a MacBook Air as my new laptop for software development. 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD.

I had waited so long for new pro Macs, that I ended up making a pretty good Linux desktop setup. (So upgradeable! So fast! And such a good deal.)

And now with new possibilities like Visual Studio Code's remote connection, the MacBook Air gives me a great user experience, and my desktop runs the serious processing. But if I need to, I can install my docker-based tools for offline work.

Of course I was really interested in the new 16", and I thought I'd get it. But the ghosting problems and speaker popping problems have put me off. I don't need it anymore like I used to. I'm looking forward to the 16's next rev, and seeing if the remaining issues are fixed.

Anybody have any issues with “Use the Caps Lock key to switch to and from between languages”?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 04:14 PM PST

My problem is after using the laptop for a while the feature just stops working. I can't switch between languages using the Caps Lock and I can't turn on all caps. Press and hold on the Caps Lock key only makes the green LED blink for a sec, but doesn't turn on all caps.

I tried hoking up external keyboard and it behaves the same, so I suppose it's not a hardware problem.

My primary question is, since I need my laptop for work, should I even bother going to the store (Apple reseller, there's no Apple store in my country) asking if they can fix it?

The laptop still has its warranty, but if it's some sort of Catalina bug that other people are experiencing let me know, so I don't waste my time looking for a fix at the store.

    Accidentally deleted Startup Disc

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 09:27 AM PST

Title is forthcoming enough. I booted up a MacBook we just got from my wife's brother, he sold it to us for $50, it's an old MacBook from 2012, into recovery mode. It was running OS X Mountain Lion 10.7. But it wouldn't let us factory reset or log out of her brothers iCloud account, as it was his previously. So I looked up some stuff online about booting in recovery mode and erasing some things, because it wouldn't download the OS. Well, I accidentally deleted the Startup Disc and now when it restarts I just get a flashing folder with a question mark. I've tried repairing the discs, but to no avail.

I was wondering if I could buy the disc installer/factory resetter for OS X Snow Leopard 10.6 and use the c key when restarting to boot it from the installer disc there, and then just proceed as a normal setup and factory reset again. Kind of panicking guys, as she's really wanting this laptop to help her with her small business plan she has in mind. Thanks for any tips guys.

    Should I update my OS?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 12:11 PM PST

So I have a mid-2015 MacBook Pro. I've never updated the OS due to hearing horror stories of things gone wrong. It's still running Yosemite and runs perfectly fine. I have no issues at all with it and don't even use it all that much anymore.

I got the AirPods pro for christmas and I can't connect them to my MacBook unless I update to Catalina. Is it worth taking the chance? I'm afraid of messing up my computer...

    Looking To Consolidate...

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 11:42 AM PST

I have an iMac from 2016, it's getting a bit long in the tooth for my work flow and the minimal amount of gaming I actually do on a Mac (since I abhor Windows). I am thinking of grabbing a Dell 38" Ultra-wide and getting an i9 MacBook Pro 16" an having that drive the display. My needs are like most - I won't bore you by listing them - but suffice to say, Final Cut, Premiere and on the occasion world of warcraft classic. Pretty sure the stock top end MBP 16" will do all these things sufficiently but I came here in the hopes of maybe getting opinions (god help me ...) on Reddit.

How to buy a MacBook Pro for cheap discounted prices?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 11:30 AM PST

Hi guys. I am from India. I am currently on a very old Mac Book Air. I need to buy a Mac Book Pro (2016 to 2019). I can only spend $800 on this. I would like at least 8 GB of RAM and at least 256 GB SSD (but would prefer 512 GB SSD). A used laptop would be just fine but I would prefer a way to get a new (unused) laptop. This is because I have more faith in the quality and hygiene of newer laptops. If any of you redditors know how this can be achieved, please comment down below.

Black screen, hard drive or display problem?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 09:51 AM PST

I bought this MacBookPics recently from a seller that stated it had a hard drive problem, and would not boot up. They said they've tried replacing the hard drive with a hard drive from a friends MacBook and it booted up fine. When I took a hard drive from an existing mac and placed it in, I still get the black screen. Ive tried resetting smc and nvram and both come up to the same black screen. I get a boot chime with both hard drives though, so I'm thinking its a display problem. Ive taken the "faulty" hard drive and put it in a working MacBook and I get a black screen, but the display lights up to a sort of dark blueish backlight. Also, when I try to boot from the faulty MacBook, the light on the back doesn't light up. Please comment if you know anything that could help me!

    Question about swapping hard drives...

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 07:25 AM PST

I have an ssd (samsung 850 evo) that I had in my 2011 macbook pro. I have pictures, videos, etc on that ssd that I need to extract and unfortunately my macbook crapped out on me a couple years ago.

My question is, can I take out the hard drive of another (more recent) macbook, put my ssd in, extract the files, and put back the original hard drive without any problems? ...like erasing data, formatting, etc...

Please help, thanks in advance, and happy new year!

    Keyboard shortcut issue...

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 03:17 AM PST

Just got a 2019 MacBook Air about 3 weeks ago. I tend to use the invert color shortcut fairly often. When I wake my laptop from sleep, after an extended period; the shortcut will not work. If I go into the keyboard shortcut settings and uncheck/recheck the box next to the shortcut it begins to work again. I haven't tried to use any other shortcuts when this issue happens. Has anyone else noticed an issue similar to this?

Advice on which MacBook for me?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 06:09 AM PST

Hello all! I've been thinking about getting myself a laptop for a while now but I'm unsure on which one is best suited to me in terms of what I'll actually use it for (don't want to invest in something over the top I don't really need). I'll list below what I'd use it for if that would help.

    • Music production (Garageband, FL Studio)
    • Video editing (Nothing too fancy)
    • Gaming (Minecraft, Steam games)

Hope someone can point me in the right direction! Thank you :)

? Replace failed hard drive or write over it

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 06:09 AM PST

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro. I replaced the original hard drive years ago with a 1TB HDD one. Recently the hard drive failed. When it boots up, the temp bar only goes so far and then it cuts off. Anyway, I've run disk utility, repair etc and no luck. I even tried to connect my MBP to an external hard drive and save the info and got a disk error. I'm asking this because I'm not sure if a failed disk is predisposed to fail again or if writing over it, gives it new life.

    I have two options -

    1. Replace the current 1TB HDD hard drive with a 1TB SSD hard drive or
    2. Write over the current hard drive with my Time Machine back up.

    • Which option do you think is best?
    • Which would you do?

    Thanks in advance
