Is deleting files the only way to keep them private if I have my MacBook serviced?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 11:14 PM PST

I've got a 1 GB Dropbox folder with a multitude of private files spread out across a bunch of different sub-folders. Would I need to delete the folder/files in order to maintain their confidentiality if I have my Macbook serviced and the technician requires admin access? I'm reluctant to delete my Dropbox folder because I don't want to cause syncing issues.

$50 or $75 Gift Card To Whoever Can Help Fix "TYUIO" Keys

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 10:18 PM PST

    Hello everyone,

I have quite a problem on my hands.

I need to get my Macbook working because college starts next week and it has a problem.

So, I have an early 2011 Macbook pro whose keys "TYUIO" work intermittently. The keys work sometimes if I press them all at the same time... and work for a while, but then, they eventually all go out.

I need help from anyone who can help me.

I believe this is a software problem and not a hardware problem as the computer itself was taken care of.

The important thing to note, when I press the five keys ("TYUIO") all at once, I can get the keys to print to the screen. But over time they go out and I am back to square one.

I am giving the person whoever can DM me the solution to these keys not working $50 or a $75 Amazon giftcard, your choice. I am doing this because I do not want to buy a new MacBook pro if I can get the keys to work again.

I am giving this reward because I have looked everywhere online for a solution. Some solutions help bring the keys working for like half a day, then they go out again.

Late 2012 ram and ssd recommendations?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 08:34 PM PST

Hello I have a late 2012 MacBook Pro that I just pulled out and dusted off. It has 4gb of memory but I think I could upgrade to 8gb. What would you Recommend I get to upgrade it? Would ram do the trick or do I need a ssd as well?

I'm hoping not to spend to much if possible and hope to try to do it myself.

    Thanks in advance.

    MacOS/iOS Running Windows/Linux Applications/Software Question

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 06:31 PM PST

Hey guys, I just have a quick question concerning MacOS and iOS. Are they capable of running Linux/Windows software/applications through some sort of exploit? Also, is there a way to prevent future updates and/or a way to downgrade your MacOS to an earlier version?

Anyways, any information regarding these matters would greatly be appreciated, thanks.

Have to reconnect apple mouse/keyboard every time

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 04:49 PM PST

I have a 16" MBP that I use both at home and at work. I have a separate mouse/keyboard set for both home and work, and both are bluetooth. The problem I've run into is that I have to manually connect to the mouse and keyboard each time I'm at work for example, after using my mouse and keyboard at home. Is there any way to have my MBP auto connect to my devices when I'm in each respective area or can I only use one set of mouse/keyboard with one given computer?

Which would you recommend for a math major - the 2019 Air or 2019 Pro?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 04:31 PM PST

Keep in mind that I might be able to ramp to ramp up the Air to higher specs, say 16GB memory and 512GB storage, but I may not be able to do so much with the Pro.

Also, my major is liable to change; I might take a couple of physics, CS, and economics courses.

Looking for MacBook Pro (13 Inch late 2011) keyboard keys

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 08:18 AM PST

    Hi Everyone,

My trustworthy MacBook Pro from late 2011 still runs like a charm!

I'm an Online Marketeer, so I type A LOT. Sadly, some of my keyboard keys are starting to break and my backspace key has already split in half! (Probably because I use that one the most, obviously, I'm not good at my job)

The only problem is, I can't seem to find a place where I can buy the keys for this keyboard! Does anyone know where I can purchase them? I am situated in the Netherlands btw.

To clarify, here is a picture of my keyboard.

    Thanks a lot in advance!

    Login Screen Help - Macbook Pro 13" A1278 (Mid-2012)

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 03:27 PM PST

Hello, I have two questions in this post, hence will be split accordingly.

    ------ PART I ------

In the video, this is how my Macbook Pro loads when I press the "Power" button. It loads into this white screen, which it didn't when I first bought it. But when I upgraded it to Mojave a year ago, it started doing this. Now I've upgraded to Catalina, I hoped that it would've resolved itself - but it didn't. If I am not mistaken, when the Macbook Pro does start-up it should load into this screen.

Speaking to an Apple Representative, they've mentioned that this is a common problem amongst Macbook's of my variety, though the individual did nothing to help. This is a relatively minor issue, that doesn't affect the usability, though if there is a solution to this, I'd like to try to solve this.

    Can anyone help?

    ------ PART II ------

I hate using my Macbook Pro. From this point onwards, consider my relationship with the MacBook as a wife I am on the verge of divorcing. The question is at the end.

After years of continuous service, it has gradually become pain-staking to use, even for simple tasks. I use my Macbook, to answer emails, browse the internet, watch Youtube, open work documents often (Adobe Acrobat), bit of Sublime Text. My use case as you can see is basic and isn't (I think) intensive. I can't do justice to demonstrate how long it takes to open files, browse them, switch between tabs on Chrome, turning on/off Bluetooth. It frustrates me to use and affects my productivity pretty bad.

    Here are the specs on my Macbook Pro;

    • 2.5 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5
    • 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    • Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB
    • 500GB SATA Hard Drive (only 105GB used)

I'd like to use my Macbook as long as possible. The maximum I'd like to ask from my Macbook is another 4 glorious years, working as a secondary device to my computer. Therefore I have considered spending some money to install an SSD drive and 8GB ram (total - not accompanying my 4GB at the moment). I've been told this can help increase the longevity and make my experience a lot more appealing.

    My question is, should I:

    1. Spend some money on an SSD and RAM (that I will install myself)?
    2. Switch/Upgrade to a newer device?

    Thank you for reading.

Macbook pro 2011 won't charge, shut's down when moved, gives clock error.

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 09:48 AM PST

Hi My macbook pro 2011 won't charge when powered off, shut's down when moved and even when the power is on it takes a few tries for it to find the cable.

When turned on, it gives an error saying the clock isn't right. Until you fix the time the computer won't charge.

I taught it would be the battery but that doesn't explain the wrong time and the charging error it gives.

Can something like this be fixed? If so, do they still fix 2011 models in shops or can I fix it myself?

Keynote Version for MacBook White Late 2009

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 12:21 AM PST

Hey guys. My daughter uses my old MacBook White Late 2009 for school. She updated to High Sierra 10.13. This is the latest MacOS for this model. Don't know why but my daughter deleted her Keynote app. If she wants to download again in the AppStore this isn't possible because it requires 10.14 and higher. What to do? My daughter is desperate because she has to do a presentation. Any ideas? Thank you for your help.

High temperatures on YouTube - 2018 Macbook Pro 15"

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 05:41 AM PST

I've recently purchased a second hand 2018 Macbook Pro of someone who rarely used the machine. It's in perfect working order but, I can't wrap my head around one thing. I'm sitting here watching YouTube through chrome; the YouTube tab is the only tab open and I have no other programs open on the machine. According to iStats, this thing is reaching temps of up to 80 degrees Celcius. This can't be normal. Any advice?

    New Macbook battery test question.

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 05:14 AM PST

    Hi everyone

I have just purchased a brand new 13 inch macbook pro.

    1.4GHz quad-core 8th-generation Intel Core i5 processor

    256GB storage

I am currently doing a battery test. Just playing a 1080p mkv file on VLC media on loop. Display brightness low. No other programs running. Connected to my houses's wi-fi network but no internet browsers open.

I'm seeing online that i should be expecting 9-10 hours battery life when just playing a video file on loop at 1080 but it's at 65% after two and a half hours.

Is this normal? Have i been given a less than perfect battery? Or does VLC media player use more power than say quicktime.

    Thanks so much for reading.

Is MacBook Air Retina 2019 enough for daily use?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 04:16 AM PST

    Hi guys!

I've never owned a MacBook, and my question is if the Air Retina 2019 is enough for some daily light use. I really don't need it for anything special but some internet browsing, media and stuff.
