A Shortcut to make your AirPods experience between devices more seamless! (And other tips) Posted: 14 Jan 2020 12:36 PM PST I got a request to share this as its own post after posting it in a comment, but basically this solves one of my biggest gripes about the AirPods and this sentiment is shared pretty widely to my knowledge, the fact that they don't automatically switch devices. Well, before today they didn't :p The set up for this is not only simple, but easily customisable too, you can pick any app to trigger this action, or even an NFC tag if you're that way inclined (basically anything in the "When" portion of Automations is fair game. What this will do is connect your AirPods to your iPhone/iPad without you having to lift a finger once you open a particular app or apps, if you don't mind setting up multiple automations. Here's how it's done:
And there you are! Unfortunately this tip doesn't work on Mac due to a lack of a Shortcuts app (maybe 10.16?), but the app "AirBuddy" by 9to5Mac writer Guilherme Rambo brings the pop up window from iOS for W1/H1 devices to macOS, and crucially, one click connecting. This method is faster than having the Sound or Bluetooth menu bar items, since it only requires a single click, and if the window fails to appear, you can set a keyboard shortcut to force it. I hope this helps! [link] [comments] | ||

What if we brought Apple car play to airliners? Posted: 14 Jan 2020 11:49 AM PST Imagine if you could have the option to pair your smartphone with the in flight screen so that you can access your own content at a nice big eye level screen. The built in entertainment system doesn't always have the best options or user experience so what if Apple partnered with select airlines to bring a version of car play, the maps can show you time to destination, altitude, speed, bearing to the nearest VOR, little in flight statistics that people like to see. And then all the typical entertainment apps. What do you guys think of this idea? I for sure would enjoy not straining my neck to look down at my phone or tiring out my arms to hold it up. Thoughts? Airpods need a universal EQ that can be saved and run on the hardware Posted: 14 Jan 2020 03:33 AM PST I've tweaked the EQ in Spotify to help adjust my Airpods in areas I think they're lacking and to my ears they sound a whole lot better now. But I can't get this to translate over to Soundcloud, or Youtube or any other music app because each app has its own settings with different parameters, and some don't have an EQ section at all. Here are two solutions that I think would make Airpods truly amazing:

Dark Mode is tied to Night Shift and that isn't working for me... Posted: 14 Jan 2020 10:17 AM PST EDIT: worth noting, I'm not saying dark mode will only happen when Night Shift is enabled or anything like that, only that when you have Night Shift enabled, the Automatic Dark Mode is tied to that. I haven't found an scenario where that isn't the case. I love both of these features. The reduction of blue light feels good on my eyes and the way Catalina can now transition automatically between light and dark depending on the time of day is great.... except that it doesn't. If you have Night Shift enabled, Catalina will transition to dark mode regardless of time of day. This isn't ideal for me because I find that I need Night Shift during the day as well because I work staring at my laptop throughout the day. I decided about a month ago to set a custom schedule for Night Shift to reduce blue light during work hours. However, this has also had the effect of initiating Dark Mode during these hours as well, which isn't what I want. At night in low light Dark Mode is great. But during the day in a brightly lit office building, the light text on dark backgrounds doesn't work so well for visibility. So now I find myself having to manually enable or disable dark mode just like with Mojave. I'd like for Apple to either a) allow me to set my own Dark Mode/Light Mode schedule independent of my Night Shift settings or b) actually have it tied with the time of day for my region like the Dynamic wallpaper is.
