    I'm talking about the desktop cursor: it literally blurs when screen recording it, and it seems to be so much better than every other touchpad I've ever used. Why is that? What sets it apart on the software side?

    New MacOS User -- Should I upgrade to Catalina?

    Hello all,

    I'm a new MacOS user. I picked up an older MacBook Pro to use, I've always been intrigued by MacBook Pro's I finally bought one albeit a tad older.

    My system is currently running High Sierra. I saw in the Appstore the ability to upgrade to Catalina. Is this something similar to upgrading from Windows 7 -- 10 for example? It seems free though which is great!

    Catalina will not burn ISO image to disk?

    I've always put my ISO files on the desktop, inserted a blank disk into my external disk drive, and right clicked on my ISO file and selected 'burn ISO image to disk' and it'll let me pick the speed and name and then burn it. Now, ever since upgrading to Catalina, it says the ISO file is invalid. I know that they are not, because I just burned an ISO image that was on my desktop one week ago and it worked fine. Updated to Catalina, and tried it again (same ISO file on the desktop), and now it says it's invalid and won't burn it. How do I fix this? Is anyone else getting this?

    Is there a way to enable and disable the use of the F1-19 keys as standard function keys contextually based upon which application is active? Or better yet, have it enabled only for specific function keys?

    I have "Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" checked so that I can use specific custom key bindings in Premiere Pro.

    I would like to be able to use the the volume keys which are F10, F11 and F12 as volume keys either all or most of the time. Therefore I would like for either:

    • The toggling of this setting to switch on when I'm in Premiere and switch itself off when I switch application to anything else
    • A method to be suggested how I might alter the behaviour of these keys in a more nuanced manner than on/off. I'd like to have all function keys except F10-12 behave as standard function keys.

    Catalina Music - Recently Added/Albums opens new screen

    Previously, in albums view on iTunes, clicking an album would open a drop-down menu with the tracks visible. In the new Music app, it opens a new screen. Clicking the back button returns you to the library, but at the top of the library, so you lose your spot.

    Unless someone knows a fix, I will assume this is another one of the features lost to the "upgrade."

    Are major Catalina bugs fixed?

    I guess this has been asked before after Catalina launch, but I waited with updating to this day in hope, that early bugs have been fixed by now.

    But upon seeing this sub full of Catalina problems, I wonder if Catalina is still a mess or wether I just see the small fraction of users with problems as the rest has no issue to post about. I had that feeling with most Apple xyz-gate "scandals" as most people I knew, had no issues with Apple products at all.

    MBP 2015 btw and no 32-bit support is not an issue for me, my important applications are 64-bit ready.

    MBP 15' 2015 overheating using Youtube - kernel_task makes me sad((

    Hello, it's been a while, but this week the problem with overheating watching youtube became unbearable.

    So:

    I have MBP 15' 2015 on Radeon M270X (middle one, not custom), latest Catalina.

    I'm using Chrome (Stable) as a main browser. I have only Spark and Chrome apps opened, besides some menubar apps (no heavy consumers at all, just 2 goddamn apps)

    Videos on Youtube makes fans go at the highest speed (6150rpm) in a minute, other websites with HTML5 videos makes fans go to 70-80% (4000rpm) in a few minutes.

    When it was summer, I thought it is just hot outside, but it's December now, and this week Mac became unusable, fans not only blast at full speed, mac constantly overheating so kernel_task process takes up to 2000% cpu (I'm not kidding, see screenshot).

    I've tried change to Firefox, reset PRAM, NVRAM, safemode, clean with Onyx, CMM, disabling hardware accelerations, addons (at first I thought the culprit is ImprovedTube addon, which makes theater mode in youtube fill the whole tab window so it is resizing video frame), enable h264, clear Library/Chache – nothing. Whole system was installed hald a year ago. EtreCheck software havent showed some serious problems.

    The only thing I haven't tried - manualy cleaning macbook, but I've bought it at 2016, 4 years ago, it's not so much time to affect so serious, as I think.

    Though I admit MacOS is the most visual pleasent OS ever built, I'm so done with this MacOS problems, restrictions, overheats and everyday fighting to make this thing work so I'm at the point to come back to Win.

    So I'm writing here to ask, anyone suffers also from overheats, if you have done hardware cleaning, had it improved something or I'm hopeless?

    How to delete system apps from Catalina?

    So: I took the plunge today & upgraded my company-provided work laptop's OS to Apple's latest. To my dismay, Catalina installed a bunch of cruft including TV.app.

    As an engineer, I'm pretty good about segregating my personal activities from my work ones, and would like to keep it that way. I'd also appreciate having a streamlined work computer without all the consumer-targeted cruft Apple keeps shoving down our throats.

    As an admin user on my own box, shouldn't I be able to keep it clean & streamlined, or am I missing something?

    "Public" folder renaming

    When I turn on folder sharing in Settings, it has a Public folder as a default share, but in the network it's being recognized as a Username's Public Folder. Can it be renamed so it won't have "username's" offset in the name? I don't think that having your admin login in the folder's name is ok in terms of security. I know that I can create a folder with any name, but I'm still curious, thanks in regards!

    i'm searching for the download direct link but I end up here: https://support.apple.com/downloads/macos and it's just the update versions. where is the full os version thats about 6gb? i'm trying to download from the app store but around 95% it fails. then diverts me to upgrade to catalina. i'm trying to download from a mid2012 macbook 13" with mojave installed. i'm trying to make a bootable usb for a mid2012 macbook 15" that has a wiped drive. internet recovery is freezing and not successful.

    Duplicate (?) volumes on MacOS Mojave?

    I'm trying to free up some space on my 2018 MBP. After some cleanup and searching around, I found that I have 2 APFS volumes on the disk. One is called "Macintosh HD", the other is "Macintosh HD - Data". They're not exact copies of one another - the "Macintosh HD" volume shows 127GB used, the other shows 283GB used. This leads me to two questions:

    1. Is there an easy way to discover the differences between the two volumes and reconcile the files? I can't necessarily assume that the bigger one has everything that's on the smaller one, and I don't want to lose anything.
    2. I read about how to delete a volume by booting into Recovery Mode, using the Disk Utility and erasing it. I can't get into Recovery Mode because for whatever reason my machine won't connect to my WiFi network. Given that, can I just boot into MacOS and erase the volume I don't need/don't want?

    caffeinate command in terminal doesnt work? (Catalina)

    Hello,

    I've read that putting the command caffeinate into your terminal should keep your mac awake..

    This would be very useful for me and I don't want to download an own app for that.

    Anyway, somehow this command does not work for me (MBA2018, Catalina). Anybody know why?

    I tried the following commands

    caffeinate

    caffeinate -t 360

    both didn't work for me and my mac went to sleep after 3 min (thats the setting I have set it to). Although when I closed terminal i (after testing) it told me "do you really want to shut down the process "caffeinate"?"

    Help is appreciated, this would come so handy for me if it worked.

    Does the Time machine backup the OS?

    For example if an OS update fails or my hard disk is formatted can I restore the system from a backup made by Time Machine?

    Reading the Apple guides I don't understand if backups contains only my files or the OS as well.

    Catalina & Time Machine Woes

    I'm about ready to throw this thing out the window. I have a Synology NAS that has a TM backup from a 2016 MBP running Mojave; I was able to use this backup to restore onto another iMac I have. TM all around seems to be working well....

    Enter the new 16" MBP running Catalina. It can find the NAS and decrypt the bundle, but claims that it can't use the backup due to it being "from another model". So I tried using Migration Assistant instead.... errors that there are no volumes and/or it is being used (hint, it's not).

    So I figure, okay... I'll just upgrade my 2016 MBP to Catalina, wipe out my TM, and start a fresh backup. It's noticeably slower backing up in Catalina, but finally finishes. I boot up the 2019 MBP in Recovery Mode and try to restore the fresh TM backup to it... same deal as before. Try to use Migration Assistant.... no dice.

    This isn't a huge stretch here, to go from a 2016 MBP running Catalina -> 2019 MBP running Catalina. How is this such a pain?

    Curious if anyone has some hints they'd like to share...

    Slower and slower MacOs after Catalina

    I have a MacBook Pro 2016 with Catalina installed. Lately I am seeing the rainbow ball more frequently. Safari gets annoyingly slow and now I am trying other alternatives. I am not sure what to do. I am wondering if others are experiencing the same thing on their Macs and what solutions could I try?

    Stuck at Login

    I have 2 macs (mac mini and imac) that were fine for a while. My mac mini developed this problem about 2 weeks ago, and an imac developed this problem today.

    Both running Mojave. Suddenly, when logging in, the login bar gets to about 80%, then stops. And will sit there forever, if you let it. It does not proceed or continue to log in. (this is after the password is entered).

    I have attempted the solutions on this page, however the first solution didn't do anything. The second solution..

    enter su "your_account"

    says "-bash: su command not found".

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hey everyone,

    I am currently using my 2019 MBP running macOS Catalina 10.15.1 (19B88).

    I am trying to take singular images from the Dynamic Mojave Desktop .HEIC file, but online everyone says that the desktop pictures can be found in /Library/Desktop pictures. When I go there however there are only a few of the desktop pictures present. When I try to change my desktop background using system preferences I still see all of them (including the dynamic ones) and changing to them does work. So they must be somewhere on my computer. But I cannot find them.

    I have tried running the find command from root but to no avail. Any help finding these files would be really appreciated!

    This is all that is in my Desktop Pictures folder.
