To those planning to downgrade to lower macOS versions with bootable USB Posted: 30 Nov 2019 02:57 PM PST TL:DR: TIFU by making a bootable USB for macOS High Sierra using an old download of the "Install High Sierra" file almost making my Mac unusable. If anyone is planning on making a bootable USB drive for an older macOS version e.g. downgrading from macOS Catalina to macOS High Sierra, never make a bootable drive from an old file, this is a terrible idea. I did just that by making a boot drive using an installer file from April which now has an expired certificate. I backed-up my information and erased my SSD after restarting, but apparently this also meant I no longer have a restorable Catalina version as a backup. I used the old boot USB and my computer refused to use that for the re-installation and was half "bricked" and I found out at this point that installer files can expire. My Mac tried to go back to OS X El Capitan which was also not working because my SSD was unrecognisable. The way around this was to download High Sierra installer from the Mac App Store from another Mac and make a boot USB on that which eventually fixed the issue when I chose that as the boot drive. I hope that made sense and helps anyone because I often restore my Mac and never considered the possibility that this would happen. [link] [comments] |
What is causing my Air to be using 47% of the total memory with absolutely nothing open? Posted: 30 Nov 2019 08:50 PM PST I've noticed this multiple times in the activity monitor after closing everything that I'll be using around 3.8GB of ram doing nothing. This doesn't seem right. For comparison my old Surface Laptop 2 used to be around 29% memory usage on idle. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Nov 2019 05:20 PM PST Hi guys, on my iphone, Messages creates one thread per contact consolidating messages being sent from both icloud email and phone number, On MacOS Catalina however, I have separate threads. Is there a setting I am misssing? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
How to set up a backup on MacOS server? Posted: 30 Nov 2019 08:56 PM PST Hi r/MacOS I am just a passerby that needs a bit of help. I am writing an informative paper for my IT security class on disaster recover and in part of my essay I want to explain how to do backs ups of a MacOS server (I have included both windows and ubuntu linux as well so that there is an overall introduction to it). I will admit I almost never use MacOS but from what I have researched you need to use the Timemachine application built in. However, from what I am reading/watching this only works for back ups of data from other Macs. But my questions is how would you actually back up the server itself encase of a catastrophic event? Would it just use the same time machine? Or is there something special that must be downloaded and installed like with windows? Below I have included what I have found so far. If you could help point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. Sources I have looked at so far that are confusing me: https://www.macworld.com/article/3130110/turn-up-the-time-machine-service-in-macos-server.html https://blog.macsales.com/41613-mastering-macos-server-part-6-contacts-and-time-machine/ [link] [comments] |
epub Books not opening in Catalina Posted: 30 Nov 2019 08:13 PM PST I'd been resetting the folder's permission on every restart. That's the only way to get books to open. But it's annoying to do it every. single. time. Am I the only one with this issue? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Nov 2019 08:38 PM PST So ever since Catalina was in beta I haven't been able to get auto dark mode to work. It is always in light mode no matter what. I recently completely wiped my Mac and it still did not fix it. Even on stock 10.15.1. Any suggestions? Night shift and dynamic wallpapers work. [link] [comments] |
I didn’t backup before downloading Catalina OS, how can I downgrade with out losing everything Posted: 30 Nov 2019 02:10 PM PST I want to downgrade back to high Sierra because I was stupid and I upgraded without knowing that I couldn't use 32 bit apps anymore and that Catalina was total shit and fucked up everything. So am I totally screwed now because I have no idea how to downgrade with all my data intact. [link] [comments] |
How do I clear purgeable disk space? Posted: 01 Dec 2019 01:34 AM PST My SSD only has 44GB free, but there's 28GB of purgeable space. How do I force this to free up? [link] [comments] |
Brand new out of box iMac has Catalina install error Posted: 30 Nov 2019 04:10 AM PST I just unboxed my brand new iMac and went straight to installing all the updates. Currently it keeps downloading the 8GB update for Catalina but every time the download is finished and the actual install starts I get this error telling me there is something wrong while running the scripts for InstallESDDMG.pkg It also forces me to download the 8GB again after every error. This is frustrating since I bought the machine brand new. Anything I can do about it? Anyone who had the same issue and resolved it? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Macbook going to kernal panics Posted: 30 Nov 2019 02:47 PM PST I installed mac os catalina on my macbook pro mid 2012. The update caused my mac to go into kernal panics several times. So I check the shutdown cause and showed -60 which is a bad sector. So I erased my ssd and clean installed the catalina os. Everything works fine except I get kernal panic again after couple of days. With the same error. I ran disutility severl times and it does not show any errors. Please help. [link] [comments] |
Battery draining extremely fast Posted: 30 Nov 2019 10:42 PM PST So I recently just got the macbookpro 2016 w touchbar and recently the battery has been going down really fast. At first i thought it was because i have too many tabs/chrome open, but i just deleted and closed everything that i wasn't using and it's still going down pretty fast. Yesterday i charged my laptop to about 60% and within an hour it was down to 5%. I just bought this laptop off of some guy a couple months ago and it held up pretty well until now. Is there any way to fix it? Should i just sell this laptop and save up for a brand new one? [link] [comments] |

Final Cut Pro not utilizing GPU / low cpu usage while rendering? Posted: 30 Nov 2019 10:14 PM PST I am Catalina with a new iMac, with dedicated graphics. I'm running the latest 10.4.7 FCPX build with my GPU detected in the playback settings. But, resource manager shows only about a 20% of course usage and no GPU usage whatsoever. I'm writing the file to a HDD , and is only 24fps 1080p content. Is this normal? [link] [comments] |
Safari Extensions Have to be Re-enabled Every Time Safari is Re-started Posted: 30 Nov 2019 04:00 PM PST Running Catalina...every time I re-start Safari I have to re-enable the extensions I want to use in Safari-->Preferences...-->Extensions. I've tried clearing cookies, emptying caches and deleting the associated .plist files and nothing makes my settings stick. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
How to fix transferring files on Android for macOS Catalina. Posted: 30 Nov 2019 09:11 PM PST After connecting an android phone to my Mac, I wasn't able to access the files system on my Mac, regardless of what USB setting the phone was set to. I looked it up online and found everyone saying this was because macOS Catalina doesn't support 32-bit apps. Make sense, but no one was providing a quick and easy fix for it. Turns out to get it working, just download the newest Android File Transfer .dmg here, and open it to access your android file system. I thought I'd post here it so people will see this when they look up the problem. [link] [comments] |
External Hard Drives do not work after Mac Catalina Update Posted: 30 Nov 2019 07:13 PM PST My WD Passport External Hard Drives do not work after Mac Catalina Update. Why is this? Do my driver's have to be updated? Where are the driver's. Other hard drives and flash drives like my Seagate do not work either. Please Help. Thank You Update: Problem Solved. I updated a program called Tuxera that I was using and that fixed things. Now the hard drives mount with my Mac and are compatible with Mac Catalina. Thank you to everybody who tried to help. [Request] Download link for Mojave or Catalina (non-Software Update) Posted: 30 Nov 2019 04:18 AM PST I have been trying to find a reliable download source for Mojave or Catalina besides Software Update (which keeps failing mid-download for some reason) but I cannot find any. I already have an older version of Catalina Beta downloaded but every time I try to use Disk Maker X 9, it says "Sorry, your macOS install app may be incomplete. Delete your install application, then download it again from the App Store". I also have an old High Sierra download and I used DiskMaker X 7 to flash it to my USB drive but I was not able to install it on my '16 MBP because "install seems to be damaged" or something like that. Any help is appreciated! Thanks. EDIT: I'd like to add that I downloaded Mojave from here and flashed it to my USB drive but the installation still failed and gave me the "damaged" error. I cannot figure out why that is happening and it's honestly frustrating at this point. [link] [comments] |
Twitter app receiving notifications even without being open? Posted: 30 Nov 2019 05:41 PM PST I've noticed the Twitter app receives push notifications even if the app hasn't being launched (or after cmd+q). It's useful but I'm wondering how much of an impact does it have on the battery. It's a strange behaviour, since I can't think of any other app that does this (i.e. mail won't notify me if it's not open), and I wasn't asked about it. Is there any way of controlling it? How does it do that if the app is theoretically closed? I looked on the accounts panel on settings and it wasn't there, and there's no control AFAIK. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 30 Nov 2019 10:56 AM PST I want to rotate my TV broadcasted via my MacBook Pro using airplay. When I use the rotation dropdown in the display menu, the only display rotating is the MacBook display. Additionally it starts mirroring the displays, which I also want to avoid. Anyone that knows how/if that would work? Edit: title: I mean airplay not airdrop [link] [comments] |
Clean Catalina reinstall keeping Data Posted: 30 Nov 2019 01:40 PM PST I'm currently running Catalina on a 2017 MBP. Over the time I installed a bunch of pkgs that I don't need any more. I want to make a clean reinstall but I also want to keep my Data. I APFS. It has two containers: macHD and MacHD - Data. How do I wipe clean MacHD but keep Data so that I could install fresh Catalina and still have all my files in my home directory? [link] [comments] |
Bootcamp on 2015 MBP with Catalina and Win10 - Catalina does not shut down properly Posted: 30 Nov 2019 08:09 AM PST Pretty much the title. I booted into recovery mode and erased the disk so I could start from scratch. I have a newer machine that I use as my main computer and I've taken everything I needed off the old machine. After I scratched the disk I installed Catalina. It works fine - no issues starting up or shutting down. After that I used the Boot Camp assistant to set up 2 partitions. The disk is 250GB - 175G is for Windows, 75G for MacOS. When I boot into Boot Camp, I can go into Windows 10, use it, and shut down or restart with no problem. I can also boot into MacOS with no problems. When I shut down it closes all the apps and the taskbar at the bottom goes away (same as you'd see in a normal shutdown). However, it never completes. It just shows the background picture and the cursor pointer. I've let it sit there for a long time but it never completes the shutdown. I end up having to shut down using the power button. The next time my computer starts up, I get the splash screen that says my computer shut down because of a problem but doesn't give me any more details. [link] [comments] |
Any area on screen that should be white flickers between white and gray instead. Posted: 30 Nov 2019 06:31 AM PST It's a very weird problem, anything that normally should appear white (Word processor pages, website backgrounds, etc) instead appear gray, and flicker randomly between different shades of gray and white. Tried SMC and NVRAM to no avail. Anyone else heard of this? [link] [comments] |
