    My iPad 2018 + DSLR Camera Photography Workflow

    The other week I posted a question regarding the best way to use my camera and iPad together for photography. I also saw many people asking similar questions and there are countless YouTube videos about this topic but nothing really covered the whole processes in an easy to understand way. I wanted to write about my own personal process, hopefully this post can help some others.

    This post describes how to get photos…

    • from the camera to the iPad.
    • from the iPad to an 'Originals Album'.
    • from the 'Originals Album' to the photo editor.
    • from the photo editor to the 'Edited Album'.
    • from the 'Edited Album' to the Internet.

    Main Equipment

    • iPad 2018 128GB
    • Sony A7rIII
    • 4 in 1 memory card reader from Amazon

    Note: I only import JPEG photos from the Sony A7Riii as Pixelmator Photo does not support RAW files above 30 megapixels on the iPad I have. Photos and Polarr appear to support these RAW files but performance is too low so I would only import RAW on photo by photo basis. The only way to import only JPEG images is to have them written to a separate memory card. If your RAW's are under 30 megapixels everything should work the same.

    iPad Apps Used

    1. Pixelmator Photo - Used to edit photos and bulk export them to various formats.
    2. Dropbox - I use this as my cloud storage solution as it appears to work the best across multiple devices and platforms (I tested Amazon Photo, OneDrive and iCloud on Windows, IOS and Android systems as a comparison).

    Other photo editing applications I have installed are Metapho, Snapseed, Polarr, Pixelmator and Darkroom. I need to perform more testing these, they all have at least one good feature but Pixelmator Photo has done a good job of combining these good features into a single app. I don't use Adobe Lightroom because there are a few things that bug me about it.

    Steps

    From camera to the iPad

    1. Insert the memory card into the adapter then put it into the iPad. In the Photos app an Import button will appear in the bottom right corner.
    2. Selecting the Import button will show you the photos, you can select individual photos then select Import or simply select Import All.

    From the iPad to an 'Originals Album'

    1. The photos get imported into the Photos app, I like to place them into their own album. To do this, click on the Albums tab then down the bottom select an album called Imports. This should contain all the photos you've just imported.
    2. Select all of the photos then create a new album to place them in.

    From the photo editor to the 'Edited Album'

    1. Open Pixelmator Photo app and select your photo album in the left column. At this point you can go through your photos and make adjustments as required.
    2. Once finished I like to select the album, press the Select button in the top right corner, then press Select All then Batch. Batch lets you do a whole heap of things including resize and export to various formats.
    3. I resize all of my photos to a more manageable size and once it has completed I press Save x Items.
    4. This saves the photos to the Recent album in iPhoto where you can select them (they normally appear at the very end) and move them to the 'Edited Album'.

    I want to point out here that this last step seems really messy but I tried all sorts of options and this seems to work the best. Pixelmator Photo does not have the option to save photos to an album so these extra steps were required. I would like to hear peoples suggestions.

    From the 'Edited Album' to the Internet

    At this stage I like to move the 'Edited Album' to a Dropbox folder. This is done by…

    1. Opening the Photos app, selecting the album, pressing Select than Select All.
    2. Select the Share icon in the top left corner then press Save to Files where you will find your Dropbox folder listed.

    It's a good idea at this point to open Dropbox to ensure it has detected the photos and is syncing them correctly. I like the place the photos into a shared folder so friends and family can view them. The photos are also ready to be published online to social media networks or where ever. I personally delete the 'Original Album' photos as they take up too much space (the originals are still stored on the memory card, and get backed up when I return to a computer).

    Some Notes and Issues

    • I've set my 'Public Photos' folder to work offline, but all apps that access Dropbox are not aware of the offline photos. This means that if I open Pixelmator Photo, navigate to my Dropbox photos folder to do some edits, Pixelmator Photo will have to download each photo again.
    • Getting photos out of Dropbox in bulk is difficult because there is no 'Select All' button. If I have a folder with 100 photos, I have to select each and every one of them.

    This means that you want to have all of your edits done prior to placing them on Dropbox, and that although Dropbox and Pixelate Photo can interact together - it's not a great experience for editing bulk photos from within the Dropbox folder.

    Concepts !

    Hey guys;

    I've been looking for an app that would let me brain storm, and when I found Concepts and its INFITNITE canvas I fell in love; the app is really nice - it even lets you choose your interests and adapts the UI depending on those.

    The only thing that bothers me is that there's this subscription wall hidding some of the functions that are crucial to me ( edits, moving photos once they're placed,etc...).

    BUT there are also one-time-payments that seem interesting, but I'm not quite sure what gives you what, and if I'll be alright with the "essetials" for 16-ish bucks.

    So here comes my question, do any of you use this app ? Are you subscribed or did you buy the features you need ? What were those ? Maybe there's another app that offers similar functions and is even better ? Thanks in advance !

    PS sorry if there was a similar post before, but searching "concepts" in the sub brings lots and lots of posts about new devices/features actual concepts.

    How to watch Apple TV on tv?

    I'gotve a new iPad so have the year trial of Apple TV plus, it doesn't let me stream Apple TV to my tv or Xbox along with no Apple TV apps for Xbox / PlayStation the only way I can see me getting Apple TV plus on my tv without having to buy an Apple TV is the lightning to HDMI adapter but I'm just wondering if this will work as apparently Netflix doesn't for the dongle I've looked at or can someone tell me of an easier way of doing this?

    I would watch it on my iPad but I'd rather have it on my tv.

    iPad Group SMS - am I an idiot?

    I have a 3rd gen 12.9" iPad Pro running up to date iPadOS 13.2. Typically running on cellular data. Also using an iPhone 11 Pro with iOS 13.2.

    My issue is that when group messaging (sms not iMessage) the replies come back individually, which causes a lot of confusion on my part and weird replies.

    Is this the way this is supposed to work?

    On the iPhone I have Text Message forwarding enabled to the iPad. I have MMS group messaging turned on.

    On the iPad I don't see an option for that.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Slide over on iPadOS 13

    Prior to iPadOS 13, I could drag an app from home screen and open another app to start a Slide Over.

    On iPadOS 13, when I hold any app, it immediately offers the option to delete apps, wich means I can't open the first app and them open the second one as Slide Over. That would actually delete the app.

    Currently I have to open the app I want as a Slide Over, close it, open the main app and them drag the second from the Dock.

    Any faster way?

    Using usb drives and sd card readers with Ipad

    Is there a limit on what size I can use? With the recent ios updates it now allows file transfer between a usb flash drive and the iphone/ipad. I used a camera usb dongle and it does work really well. However is there a size limit? So far I've used two different usb flash drives that are both 64 gb. But has anyone experimented with a larger size? How does it work? The same question would apply for using a sd card reader.

    And if so, what are your thoughts? I watched a video online and it seemed to be really sloppy, almost messy when it came to "un-smooth" scrolling. Then he used the Apple Pencil to scroll and it was business as usual (fast and fluid). Wondering if you all have experienced that same result.

    New usb c apple sd card reader that does not work?

    Bought myself a new sd card reader since my new ipad pro got usb c and wanted to import som photos while on travel but the bugger refuse to work at all. Nothing happen when I insert the card. Tried rebooting the ipad and still nothing. Anyone got an idea what the problem could be? Using a Leica Q with .dng raw, but I have used an older ipad pro for couple of years ago with no issues.

    Thumb Drive Suggestion for iPad Pro 9.7”?

    I've been struggling with a reasonable photo editing workflow on my iPad Pro 9.7", which still has a lightning connection. I like to rely on local storage vs cloud, but the power limitations of lightning make it difficult.

    I'm trying to avoid using the giant USB to lightning dongle as it requires additional power, but every lightning thumb drive I find on Amazon requires some terrible app to use.

    Has anyone found a lightning thumb drive that doesn't suck and is natively compatible with Files on an iPad? Bonus points if it also has a USB-C connection.

    Pretty great in my opinion and it's good on all models. Not sure we'll see it go much lower on Black Friday/Cyber Monday. I didn't see any indicators on how long this will last. It requires you to be a My Best Buy member which is free. I currently have an iPad Mini 5 and i've been vascillating back and forth about getting the Air. I mostly consume (games, movies, tv shows, etc.) so I've been hesitant to grab the larger but arguably less game-friendly Air. This is a pretty great price though.

    ipad air or ipad mini?

    i want an ipad but i'm not sure which one to get. i'm basically gonna use the ipad for youtube, twitter, instagram, do some editing work on there. which one is the best for like chilling in bed but also having a bigger screen to the point where i won't use my phone? thanks.

    I have an iPhone XR and fake airpods lol, but I would really like a laptop from Apple. I'm broke so MacBooks are out the window, is the iPad Air 2 able to run ios13 with the multitasking, and if so, would it be good for just google doc/ word and some light browsing? Thanks! Also would it be worth getting the pencil?

    Need advice on what model to purchase for drawing and design

    As the title says, I'm in the market for an iPad and stylus that best supports someone that'll use it for drawing and design. But also use the multi-media functions of the device as-well. I'm not familiar with Apple products so I'm not sure as too what model would be best. Hoping I can get some input from someone with more experience and knowledge.
