    Mac OS Catalina Issues

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 08:54 PM PDT

Not sure if this is the right sub reddit but anyway.

So i recently updated my Macbook to os Catalina and as you know Apple has apparently made a switch from bash to ZSH. I am not a power user by any means but i did have some aliases in my bash profile previously and i want to know how i can port them over to zsh. speaking of ZSH i also cannot find the config folder or what ever the equivalent of bash_profile is for ZSH anywhere on my mac. Please help.

TL:DR how do i make aliases in mac os catalina using ZSH terminal shell

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 08:14 PM PDT

Hello, after installing Catalina my macbook has been shuttling down randomly. In the past, I was able to delete AppleThunderbolt extension but this time I'm not able to so so. I have tried disabling csrutil but it doesn't help anymore like it used to. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Using Samsung T5 SSD with Macbook and Windows PC?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 08:13 PM PDT

I'm thinking of getting a T5 SSD for my MacBook, but I also plan on importing, exporting, and opening data/media on my Windows PC. From reviews on amazon and comments on Reddit, if I plan on using it on MacOS I need to format it/uninstall the pre-installed samsung software and install some other program, but is that necessary if I'll also be using Windows? Would Uninstalling it and installing the program for MacOS mess things up when I want to use it on windows?

Better deal? MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2013) vs Surface Pro 2 (please note pricing, specs and battery life)

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 07:37 PM PDT

I am looking at the following two used devices:

    A. MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2013) - 4 GB RAM, Core i7.

Battery cycle count: 620Price: USD 285

    B. Surface Pro 2

    4th Gen Core i5, 8 GB RAM

    Battery cycle count: 339

    Price: USD 188

Primary usage is going to be schoolwork and everyday stuff. I currently find my mid 2012 Macbook Pro too heavy to be carrying around in my backpack all the time.

Debating Catalina for 2012 upgraded MBP. Thoughts?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 09:22 AM PDT

I have a 2012 MBP that is currently running on Mojave. It has a samsung evo 500gig ssd with 16 gigs of RAM. Would Catalina slow me down or even be properly compatible? It runs great now but I am curious to see if Catalina would improve my set up.

Light fan noise on 15'' Macbook Pro: normal?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 02:37 PM PDT

    Hello everyone.

I have recently upgraded from my old 13'' Macbook Pro mid-2014 to a beastly 15'' Macbook Pro. I have been very happy with both my old computer and my new amazing update.

That said, I have noticed that my new 15'' Macbook Pro does have little more noise than what I was used. While under heavy workload I do expect that, I have noticed that, even when idle, I can hear some noise coming from the fans.

I have already checked the rpm for the two fans: even when at minimum, they still make some sound. I believe it is normal, since the computer is much bigger and powerful, but I would like to know some experience and suggestions.

    Thanks all in advance.

    Backpack for Macbook Pro 15”?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 07:27 AM PDT

Hi guys, my new MBP is coming on 21st of october and i want to buy a new backpack cause my current one has no back or front or bottom protections or reinforcements and actually caused damage to my previous 2011 MBP. Have any suggestions? I really like those anti-theft backpacks but they are so ugly. Trekking-ish packs with bottom reinforcements would be enough. Thank you!

Best thing to do with old broken Macbook Pro?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 10:51 AM PDT

I have a Macbook Pro (purchased June 2014 - version 10.13.5) with a shattered screen and several viruses that has basically been bricked and has not been used in over 2 years.

What is the best thing to do with this computer? Obviously it's pretty much unusable at this point between the screen being FUBAR and how slow it has become. Is there a way I can sell it for parts, or at the very least recycle it correctly?

What to do with old Macbook Air that won't turn off?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 10:28 AM PDT

Found a Macbook Air (2012) in our office that seems to charge but does not turn on at all. The Mac seems to be in perfect cosmetic condition aside from some screws at the bottom that are missing.

Is it even worth taking it to the Apple store for an appointment to see what's wrong and find out how much it will cost to fix? Or should we look for some place to recycle it?

Thanks and sorry if this is the wrong sub for this!

Is there a Cisco AnyConnect VPN alternative for macOS Catalina?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 06:24 AM PDT

Is there a Cisco AnyConnect VPN alternative for macOS Catalina?

I only got the Cisco AnyConnect VPN v3.3 from Cisco when I purchased hardware for many years ago, but it doesn't seem that this version is supported in macOS Catalina.

Is there any alternative for Cisco AnyConnect VPN that is recommended for macOS Catalina?

Older version of OS not letting me update to any newer versions?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 08:20 AM PDT

hello! Like the title says, I cannot for the life of me update my Macbook Pro. I bought it in 2013, it's a model from mid 2012, and is currently running OS 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion). I've searched Apple forums, have checked the App Store, and I cannot get any newer OS versions at all (even older ones that just come after it). I cannot back up my iphone because this OS does not support the newer iphone models and I can't even download the newest version of itunes. Chrome also won't update because the newer versions do not support it. Is there any way I can fix this on my own without having to go into the Apple store? Thank you so much!
