What are some of the best apps you have on your Mac? here are mine Posted: 04 Sep 2019 04:24 PM PDT I have just upgraded my 2012 MBP to the latest one and am reviewing the software I have installed and going through what I use frequently enough to merit keeping on the brand new system. Figured I would share the list here and get some good recommendations from the community as well. Paid or free, does not matter. I love discovering new and useful apps and hope you find something new and interesting in this list too. Here is what I use frequently or semi-frequently: Standard NotesCost: Free (all core functionality) with paid features (themes and editor customizations) Site: https://standardnotes.org/ It is an open-source, end-to-end encrypted, cross-platform text based notes application. End-to-end encryption means no one (not even the company itself) can read the notes you keep here unless they have access to your password. It syncs flawlessly on all devices and the bulk and most useful features are free. Itsy CalCost: Free Site: https://www.mowglii.com/itsycal/ Great little utility that provides you with the calendar in the menu bar. Its provide a more concise but slightly less attractive menu calendar option than Fantastical 2. Fantastical 2Cost: $40 Site: https://flexibits.com/fantastical If you have been using MacOS for more than a few months then you surely have heard of it. It is a great calendar replacement. Quassell ClientCost: Free Site: https://quassel-irc.org/ An open source and cross-platform IRC application. It is slightly less polished than the paid Textual 7 IRC app for MacOS but I use it because it provides the Core/Client capability. So I have the core running on an always on Windows server on my home network and I use the client app on my Mac and Windows computers to connect to the same IRC session. Sort of an always on IRC solution. Omni Disk SweeperCost: Free Site: https://www.omnigroup.com/more A free utility from Omni Group that provides stats on storage usage. it's free and useful. 1 PasswordCost: subscription Site: https://1password.com/ A beautiful password manager PopClipCost: $10 Site: https://pilotmoon.com/popclip/ A neat utility that pops up some options when you select any text. It's hard to explain how cool it is. Try out the free trial. Bartender 3Cost: $15 Site: https://www.macbartender.com/ A neat utility to customize and hide icons from your Mac's menu bar. Try the free trial. Proton VPNCost: Free for one device, subscription for multiple devices Site: https://protonvpn.com/ An awesome VPN that provides unlimited bandwitdth for free for one device (at a time, so you can install on your iphone and ipad too but can only have one active connection at a time, for example, when travelling) Signal Desktop SyncCost: Free Site: https://signal.org/ Free, open source, cross platform (no ipad) encrypted messaging app recommended by Edward Snowden. DayOneCost: Free on one device, Subscription for sync on multiple devices and features Site: https://dayoneapp.com/ A diary and journaling app that provides (for subscription) end-to-end encrypted syncing for your diaries on all your devices (iOS, iPadOS, MacOS only, no Windows and the web app does not support end-to-end encrypted journals). MS Remote Desktop 10Cost: Free Site: Get from Mac App Store Remote Desktop app for connecting to all Windows machines on your network or at work DaVinci Resolve 16Cost: Free for non-4k Exports - $300 for additional features and full export Site: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/ A cross-platform (Mac, Windows, Linux) professional video editing app AmphetamineCost: Free Site: Get it from Mac App Store A very handy utility to stop your mac from going to sleep. basically an updated, feature rich successor to Caffiene Firefox and Firefox DeveloperCost: Free Site: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/ Free open source browser. Much better now after the Quantum Engine upgrade. Microsoft OfficeCost: 365 subscription or one time fee Site: https://www.office.com/ If you need it. CalibreCost: Free Site: https://calibre-ebook.com/ Free, open-source, cross-platform ebook management system. Must have if you have an ebook reader like Kobo or Kindle Little Snich 4Cost: $40 Site: https://www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch/index.html A beautifully designed outbound firewall that lets you keep track on which apps on your computer are making outbound connections and where to. Run it in silent mode and then check every once in a while to ensure no apps are leaking your information to places that they shouldn't be. For example you can block certain apps from reporting to Google Analytics if they haven't asked for your consent to collect analytics. Money DanceCost: $50 Site: https://moneydance.com/ A cross-platform personal finance/budgeting app (no mobile syncing for investments). I only use it for its portfolio (stocks, forex etc.) tracking and end-to-end encrypted syncing capabilities. App Cleaner & UninstallerCost: Free and Pro for $10 Site: https://nektony.com/mac-app-cleaner Just a little bit more thorough than the free App cleaner from freemacsoft but that one shoud be good enough for you too. Time Machine EditorCost: Free Site: https://tclementdev.com/timemachineeditor/ Nifty utility to schedule Time Machine backups in case you don't want it to backup every hour. Sync.com Sync ClientCost: Free 5 GB. +1GB/each referral Site (link with referral for +1GB upon signup): https://www.sync.com/?sync_refer=8940a2ba0 An end-to-end encrypted dropbox alternative. Use it to backup important documents on the cloud without having to worry about the service/hackers being able to get at the information on the server side. Better Touch ToolCost: $7.5 Site: https://folivora.ai/ Great utility to customize touchbar on your Macbook Pro. Use it with one of the available customization packages to get started. ScrivenerCost: $50 (or $40 with code: LEARNSCRIVENER) Site: https://www.literatureandlatte.com/scrivener/overview Porbably the best long-form wirting tool on Mac (and even Windows). I prefer it over Ulysses because it's not subscription based. Free trial available, try it out. PasteCost: $15 Site: https://pasteapp.me/ A clipboard manager that prganizes copied information in a great card based system. Allows iCloud based sync too that is optional. Coconut BatteryCost: Free Site: https://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutbattery/ A useful utility for tracking the remaining capacity/life of your Macbook Battery. [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Sep 2019 02:21 AM PDT (MacOS Catalina Macbook pro 13" 2016) A little while ago I had to restore my computer from a time machine backup because of a problem I was having and after a while, I started to notice that new apps were sometimes not appearing in launchpad, so I looked it up and followed the generic steps like moving applications in and out and deleting that file that contains the launchpad preferences. I tried both including the specific terminal command. However, now I have no apps in my launchpad except for the default system apps. I'm not entirely sure how the whole 3 applications folder thing works but as far as I know, it's the applications folder that appears inside the Macintosh HD drive itself above user level that is linked to Launchpad. But the applications folder which I can't edit in the system folder has only default apps and the one on user-level has nothing. I'm aware that this could be a Catalina bug but it was working fine with Catalina before. Any suggestions? [link] [comments]

WD SATA 1 SSD doesnt show up in the terminal "diskutil list" 2011 Macbook Pro Posted: 04 Sep 2019 11:33 AM PDT Trying to install clean OS on my macbook pro, but SSD isn't discoverable on the Mac. It works on Windows, and I made sure firmware was updated. The SSD is a WD Blue 500gb 3D Nano SATA SSD. The SSD is connected with a USB 3.0 to SATA, but the macbook ports are usb 2.0. Anything I can try? [link] [comments]
Hidden iTunes Tags, and Displaying on iPhone Posted: 04 Sep 2019 01:32 PM PDT Managed to find some good apps for adjusting certain hidden values in iTunes such as Advisory, Release Date, and Copyright. Is there any way to have the Copyright display on iOS the same way it does for Apple Music songs? Even when I edit it, it'll show the Copyright in iTunes, but does not display it at the bottom of the album on iOS. Any suggestions or help is appreciated! [link] [comments]
Replacing characters in file names? Posted: 04 Sep 2019 05:03 PM PDT I have a lot of files that need characters replaced. Like they will have an underscore, or a period, where I'd rather there be a space. Currently, the easiest way that I've found is to copy the file name, paste it in text edit, command+F and find the characters that I want to replace, hit replace and type what I want them replaced with which is usually a simple space, and then click all. Then, go back and copy that new file name to the file. Is there a quicker way to do this? I know they have some right click menus for almost everything now. Would be great if I could right click a file and hit "replace all of xxx with " ". It doesn't deviate much so I wouldn't necessarily have to input what I want to replace once I have it in the menu but it would be a huge time saver for me. Any suggestions? [link] [comments]
My Mac doesn't detect my internal ssd anymore after removing Bootcamp partition. I can't boot. Posted: 04 Sep 2019 03:05 PM PDT I installed Bootcamp, everything was fine. Then I resized bootcamp partition to free some space to install Linux. Once I installed Linux, the bootcamp boot was replaced by the Linux one and windows didn't boot anymore. So I booted into macos and started bootcamp program and deleted windows partition clicking on "restore to a only macos drive", and it gave me an internal error. So I rebooted and the result is that it can't boot macos. If I press option key while powering on to select the os, it gives me none. No os is showing up. I booted a LinuxLiveUsb and using Gparted the ssd can be seen and I see that the NTFS partition of Bootcamp has been deleted successfull. Since the drive can be seen from Linux, the ssd is not broken. Booting macosInternetRecovery and starting disk utility, the ssd doesn't show up. What can I do? [link] [comments]

I know the basics but I would like to be prepared in the case an interview scenario comes up that I can't answer [link] [comments]
Posted: 04 Sep 2019 12:19 PM PDT My issue is basically what I mention in the title. I have a large TV monitor that I want to connect as a third monitor to my laptop, an early 2015 MacBook Pro. So far, I already have two other displays connected via VGA adapters to the two Thunderbolt ports on the laptop. I thought, then, that adding a third display should be as simple as connecting it via the HDMI port, but when I did that, one of my original displays went dark. If I unplug the HDMI it comes back, but I can never get all three of the monitors to be turned on at one time. Whenever I plug in the HDMI, one of the two Thunderbolts deactivates. Specifically, the one that deactivates is the smallest of my displays, besides the laptop itself, an Acer LCD monitor. I've tried multiple configurations of which cables go from what port to what monitor, but nothing ever changes the outcome. I've tried using the "detect displays" button in Systems Preferences but it doesn't do anything. Is there an issue with trying to connect displays through different cable formats? Is it perhaps because one of these displays is just too old (list of displays below)? No online advice has worked thusfar, so this is kind of the last ditch effort before I give up on it and just accept I won't have the glory of three external displays. So, any advice would be great. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Latest update messed up my mac Posted: 04 Sep 2019 10:48 AM PDT My mid 2012 MacBook Pro has been heavily affected by the latest supplemental update (10.14.6 I think). After having to restart it a few times (and reset the SMC and pram/nvram) during installing due to stalling for hours it finally finished. But trying to login took even longer at around 6 hours and then finally loading up apps and such took hours at a time. I have barely got it working but it's pretty much unusable for anything as everything is so slow (it was fine before the update). Every time I try and restart it takes hours again and keeps telling me that the update was successful as if it thinks I just rebooted after the update which was around a week ago. I've been trying to leave it on for a couple days to perform basic tasks like load up safari etc but it hasn't improved. I checked activity monitor and the problem seems to be my memory as it says swap used is at 2/3gb and it's using about 75% of my memory and most of it on small tasks such as opening finder and safari. I know the last option is to wipe everything and start again but I don't have a backup so moving everything to an external HDD could take days. Are there any options for resetting my RAM or trying something to fix this? [link] [comments]
Posted: 04 Sep 2019 10:33 AM PDT Hey Team, I hope this is the right place to ask. I'm dusting off an old mac-mini. I don't seem to be able to update the OS. I think its because it was the server version. I did want to use the "Server" app and the "remote desktop" app, any help is appreciated. [link] [comments]

I have a MacBook from my company, can they use the certificates to spy on me? Posted: 04 Sep 2019 04:49 AM PDT Question see above. I had to install a certificate that allows IT to:
I'm using a VPN to avoid them tracking my traffic, Most of the certificates seem okay, but does the right to lock my screen imply that they can see it? And what does program and media management mean exactly? And before someone says it: Not planning to do anything stupid, but I care about my privacy. EDIT: Also, I'm allowed to use the device privately. I travel a lot and don't want to take two laptops with me. Also I'm living in the EU, so according to GDPR I actually do have privacy. Posted: 04 Sep 2019 08:20 AM PDT I want to keep all my photos in iCloud but I don't care for them to show up on my mac. It's taking up 20GB right now. I went into iPhoto and turned off iCloud photo library and all the photos are still there taking up the same amount of space. The weird thing is, ever since I turned it off, I went into my storage view and notice now there is 14GB of 'other'. Am I missing something? [link] [comments]
