4 Quick tl;dr iOS Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 31)

    Posted: 06 Sep 2019 08:13 AM PDT

YES! Finally Friday again :) Welcome back to this weekly roundup of the 4 most interesting mobile games I've played this past week, my fellow mobile gamers!

This week, covering an endless fantasy castle defense game, a brand new Pokémon RPG, a hardcore 2D platformer that will make you want to throw your phone out the window, and lastly, a 3D MMORPG Crusaders of Light competitor.

Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 31 weeks ago here.

The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

    Let's get started:

Pokémon Masters [Game Size: 1.29 GB] (free)

Genre: RPG / Action - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Portrait

Required Attention: Full (unless using the useless auto-mode)

    tl;dr review:

Taking 3 Pokémon with us into action-based PvE and co-op battles (as opposed to turn-based), Pokémon Masters is a Pokémon RPG that although deviating heavily from the mainline series, has kept me entertained all week.

There's no energy system, and because there's no PvP, players who spend money on the game don't negatively impact a free players' experience of the game. There's a decent depth to the game, and you have to think fast and be smart during combat, but the game remains a somewhat casual experience.

Pokémon are unlocked through campaign missions and a gacha unlocking mechanic, which, understandably, is most people's gripe with the game. The game's generous with free premium currency, however.

Almost There: The Platformer [Total Game Size: 187 MB] ($4.99)

    Genre: Platformer / Hardcore / 2D - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Almost There: The Platformer is a minimalistic hardcore 2D platformer where we speedrun to complete each of the game's 150 levels so fast that we get 3 stars.

The game's fun and simple, with a nice balance to the gameplay that makes it easy to gain 1 star in each level, but near impossible to finish at 3 stars.

The game comes at a steep $4.99 premium price, which makes the game pricier than Geometry Dash and other competitors; but if you're already played those, this is a fresh stint of gameplay.

Perfect World Mobile [Total Game Size: 3 GB] (free)

Genre: MMORPG / Role Playing - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Some

    tl;dr review:

Perfect World Mobile is a 3D "WoW-like" MMORPG where we can fly around to explore the entire open-world, using visually-pleasing skills with silky smooth animations to defeat the monsters roaming the world.

The game clearly aims to be a Crusaders of Light competitor, and with English-voiced cut-scenes and very in-depth character creation customization, it does so decently well.

However, the game features many pay-to-win iAPs, the combat system isn't particularly interesting, and the auto system is almost required to progress through the game's quests, which will be huge letdowns for a lot of players!

Days Bygone [Game Size: 89 MB] (free)

    Genre: Castle Defense / RPG / Endless / 8-bit - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Landscape

Required Attention: Full (in some game modes)

    tl;dr review:

Days Bygone is an endless castle defense game about throwing weapons at enemy creatures storming our walls, unlocking units to help us defend, and slowly upgrading our stats and weapon.

With multiple game modes, gameplay that can be as active or passive as you want, and lots of depth (because of the many upgrades), the game's great fun if you enjoy castle defenders.

Monetizing through iAPs to unlock convenience features & optional video ads, the game's easily enjoyable as a Free-to-Play user as well, and I felt less forced to watch ads to proceed than in competing castle defense titles.

App Store: Soon, according to the developer!

    Dead Cells on iPhone 8+

    Posted: 06 Sep 2019 08:34 AM PDT

I just got an iPhone 8+ and want to get Dead Cells so bad!

Does anyone knows how it performs on an iPhone 8+? I am asking because I thought the 8+ is a powerhouse but experienced the problem of dimming the brightness when getting hot while playing Fortnite (just downloaded it to test the power of my new phone) - a known problem with this game btw. So, does it run smooth or will it transform my iPhone into a glowing brick with 10% brightness?

And is it playable without any controller? I am waiting for iOS 13 and will play with an PS4 controller as soon as possible.

    Touch freeze on IPAD

    Posted: 06 Sep 2019 06:53 AM PDT

I'm not a sure if posting here is the best way to go, but I have a 3 month old IPAD air 3rd gen, with a magnetic case and tempered glass screen protector that I use for gaming (mostly PUBG mobile). All was fine first 2 months, but over the last month I get a random freeze with touch response that can last between 1 to 4 seconds. Some days this will rarely happen other's it can happen more regulary, like today during PUBG I got 4 touch freezes during one 30 minute game. The whole frames and action on screen doesn't freeze, just that any touch will not respond, than after a couple of secs it's back to normal. This has happened through 3 updates(currently on 12.4.1) and a factory reset of the IPAD. I have tried switching off Background refresh, Icloud, assistive touches, even removed the Text of the battery bar on the notification bar. Nothing seems to have worked.

I'm not sure if it's the tempered glass screen protector but I don't really want to pull it off if there's another solution.

Has anyone had this issue and resolved it?

    Best free puzzle/adventure games?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2019 01:09 AM PDT

Im looking for puzzles and/or puzzle adventure games that are free. I liked the Cube Escape series a lot. What are the puzzle games that are worth mentioning? If they are not pricey and they are great, like Monument Valley, then im down!

Anybody played Cuphead? Seems pretty new to the App Store and I’m not sure if it’s worth the $3

    Posted: 06 Sep 2019 07:46 AM PDT

Haven't seen it shared here yet, so here's the link.

CUPHEAD PE by GAMES AID https://apps.apple.com/us/app/cuphead-pe/id1478504191

Already in the top paid category, but reviews seem mixed. Also not really sure if it's the real deal or if it's a rip off game like what happened last year.

    Help. I can't find a Match 3 game I used to play.

    Posted: 05 Sep 2019 01:10 PM PDT

It was a Match 3 game with heroes that each had their own health bar, you could also level up and evolve the heroes. Also the heroes were not on a card or whatever. The tiles were classic 5 elements and the levels were just a never ending chain of missions that would get harder and harder meaning you would have to grind to progress.

I think I played this game back in 2014-2015. This is as much information as I can remember. I thought the name had dragon in it but that didn't help in my search at all. Lastly I played the game on iPhone back then but am on Android now, so perhaps that's why I can't find it?

Thank you for any help. I have been trying to find this game for almost a week now.

    iPad Gamevice issue: Random Reboot

    Posted: 05 Sep 2019 03:25 PM PDT

Wondering if anyone else using a Gamevice with an iPad has had a problem with random reboots of the iPad? I have had this issue for some time now but it is most noticeable with Dead Cells. I will be playing and suddenly the iPad will just reboot. This doesn't happen while playing with touch controls or with a Nimbus. I contacted customer support but they basically just wanted to know if the product was out of warranty and were no help in any way.

Even though I think the gamevice feels cheap and is overpriced, it is by far my preferred controller for my iPad so I am very curious if this is just my device or if this is happening to other people.

Best mmorpg that can be played „idle“?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2019 10:32 AM PDT

Like auto battle etc. should not be too battery hungry.

Need something to kill some time at work

I prefer to not walk 1638 kilometers to fight a dungeon, i prefer if i can just chose the dungeon and get grouped up with randoms.

    Any Zelda-like games?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2019 12:14 AM PDT

Im looking for offline games like the old Zelda games. I prefer graphics like Zelda: A Link to the past (similar to first Pokemon games). If you cannot think of any you can suggest another open-world like rpg with similar characteristics.

Ps. I have tried Stranger things game but sadly i did not find it fun!

    Thank you all
