Those who use an iPad with Apple Pencil for college/school and take notes by hand, how do you like it and what are the benefits you’ve noticed from using an iPad over pen and paper?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2019 10:14 PM PDT

Do you prefer the iPad over pen and paper? like the texture/palm rejection?

I'm thinking about getting an iPad for college and going paperless, but my dad and brother both think it's a bad idea. But whenever I check reviews or things like this subreddit I become more and more convinced to get one with the pencil and the smart keyboard

How I use my 11" Pro for Podcasting, Photo Editing and School

    Posted: 08 Jul 2019 08:18 AM PDT

I thought I would need to stick with my Surface Book or switch back to a MacBook Pro with its flawed keys and design compromises. Then I did some research, and now I am super happy with my 11" 256 GB Cellular as a capable powerhouse on the go.

I podcast with a USB C audio interface (Focusrite Scarlett Solo 3rd gen interface) hooked up to a Shure Beta 87A with a nicely built desk tripod. I edit with Ferrite Studio, and record interviews either with a Discord bot or a service like RINGR.

For extra storage Samsung T5's are really cheap now and work like a charm in iPadOS betas. However, I would advise waiting for the release, as downloading Safari sites and unzipping files (the biggest features I needed from it atm) can be done with Readdle's excellent Documents app in iOS 12 servicably. The beta is great but not worth the bugs at the moment.

For photo editing you can't go wrong with the power of Affiinity Photo, but most of my simple edits are done in Lightroom CC. I don't do anything super fancy but it's nice to have such a great device for importing and editing photos (again works excellently with USB devices, my camera is a Sony one with USB C for direct data transfer)

For school you really can't go wrong with Notability, and OneNote is good if you want more power for notetaking. Adobe Scan, being made by the company that made PDFs, seems to have the best scanning features for high quality scans from the iPad camera, and the Microsoft To-Do app is a great and not too complicated task manager.

Anyone got any suggestions for these usecases or thoughts? Thought I would post here and maybe help anyone out curious to try these kind of workflows on an iPad.

Employer wants me to give my Apple ID and Password for new work iPad

    Posted: 08 Jul 2019 09:28 AM PDT

Is this a good idea? Should I create a new apple ID with my work email address instead of giving them my personal apple ID? I'd hate to give them access to my whole digital life. The problem is I'll lose the seamless integration with the rest of my apple devices by using a new Apple ID.

    Bypass Paywalls?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2019 05:21 AM PDT

I noticed today that WSJ has stopped allowing even a Facebook/Twitter redirect or using Google Search/AMP to read full articles. Does anyone have any idea how to bypass paywalls? Especially now that we have desktop-class Safari with iPadOS?

Could we do something similar to what Bypass Paywalls (https://github.com/iamadamdev/bypass-paywalls-firefox) is doing via Shortcuts in iPadOS?

Any slim case that lets you view the iPad at any angle (like the surface pro hinge)?

I've been looking for a slim and minimal case that lets you view the iPad at any angle but can't find anything. The Brydge keyboard looks really nice but is too much for me. Is there anything like apple's smart folio case but gives you more than 2 viewing angle?

Simple hard shell case for iPad Mini 5

    Posted: 08 Jul 2019 06:54 AM PDT

    Hi

I'm looking for a rear cover which is:

    • hard shell (rigid)
    • clear or crystal clear plastic
    • no side cut outs for fitting a cover (i'll fit a screen protector)
    • covers all sides
    • no pen holders or holders for anything else
    • slim 1.5/2mm all round
    • no printed design etc

Any one know if one exists??

    Here is an example:

    https://ibb.co/fnjqv6W

It's for an iPad Mini 4 and I hoped it would fit my iPad mini 5 (well enough) but unfortunately it presses against the volume buttons and partially covers the camera so I'm looking for an alternative.

Having real trouble finding something similar for the mini 5. I know it's basic but I like to retain the original look of the iPad with a non obtrusive bit of additional protection on top.

Help me make the most of my iPad

    Posted: 08 Jul 2019 12:19 AM PDT

I recently snatched the iPad 2018 128 gb with Apple Pencil for a decent enough price. The experience so far has been extremely underwhelming.

I was used to my trusty Surface Pro 3 who's been my companion for 5 long years. The poor thing has seen at least 8 to 10 hours of use every single day for 5 years and has travelled with me almost everywhere. I was starting to think that thing was indestructible. Turns out it can break. I tried the whole laptop + paper thing again but kept loosing sheets of paper, never had the right notebook with me, accessing old notes was a nightmare if at all possible.

So I got the iPad after extensive research and reading multiple reviews on how "the iPad is the ultimate productivity tool". To be honest I don't get it. I don't get the OS and I'm not sure how to use it for productivity. I genuinely love it for painting and drawing, but I got it mainly to use as a productivity tool for student stuff.

I'm a physics student. And I was going to use the iPad for studying, painting and occasional Netflix. I am trying to avoid games, social media and other distractions.

I planned to use one note, in which I already have 4 years worth of notes, but the inking experience is awful. Is there anything I can do to make it better? I'm using notability and the inking experience is great but organising notes is impossible. Adding something you forgot is an incredible hassle (you have to either add a new page or move the whole content down). Worst of all there is no way to access my notes on my laptop (which mainly runs Linux nowadays but I'm willing to switch back to windows if that's what it takes). For the love of me I can't figure a way to quickly share files between my iPad and my laptop. How do I make Bluetooth work? I even tried connecting the tablet to the laptop via cable but could only access my photos and not the other folders on my device. Is my tablet broken? Should I be worried?

Does anyone have a decent pdf annotation app to suggest? I'm trying out LiquidText and MarginNote3 but they seem way too complicated for me and I am not sure how to have the markups on those apps stick to the original files. Besides can't seem to export their strange annotation trees. Is that even possible? One thing I can't wrap my mind around is how You can't try most apps before you buy them. I don't mind paying for great software. I just wish I could see how great of a software it is before buying it.

Any file manager worth it's name? The built in one kinda sucks.

Any way to share my screen with my smartTV?

A couple of my friends suggested "just get a keyboard and it will feel 200% more productive" or " you should have gone for the pro". But I don't see how any of those things would change my bafflement with the OS.

Am I the only idiot who thinks iOS is extremely unintuitive? I grew up literally hearing the opposite from everyone but I find myself googling the most basic stuff.

[EasyCanvas] Why isn't pressure sensitivity working in Adobe Animate?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2019 04:32 AM PDT

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, but it seems like there's no way to contact the EasyCanvas developers anymore.

I'm using Windows 10, and a 2018 iPad Pro. The pairing process is seamless, and all the app's features work fine.

However, pressure sensitivity won't work. Animate works fine on my old Wacom Intuos, so it can't be a problem with Animate settings. Restarting EasyCanvas hasn't worked.

    Has anyone else encountered this?

    Does AppleCare increase resale value?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2019 09:40 AM PDT

I'm thinking of getting AppleCare in my 11" iPad Pro since repairs are so expensive and because I usually end up upgrading almost every year. If I buy AppleCare on it, will that increase the resale value to help me recoup the cost of Apple care? Also seems like iPads on eBay that include AppleCare tend to sell for a decent premium.

Just bought a 12.9" iPad Pro, and I wonder if my purchase is worth it...

    Posted: 08 Jul 2019 09:07 AM PDT

Just bought a 12.9" iPad Pro, and I wonder if my purchase is worth it...

I just opened the 2018 iPad Pro

tl;dr: I love the 12.9" iPad Pro so much, but I miss the portability from my 10.5". Hear me out.

I've been thinking about it for days, so I would like to place my thoughts here.

I had the 10.5" iPad Pro since its launch in 2017. I bought it because back then I love the idea of how iOS11 become closer to replace my laptop (was MBP 13" 2015), so I fully equipped the iPad Pro with Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard for my daily usage. I love it so much, I honestly think that the multitasking gestures is the best, and I grew to love that feature the most.

Moving to a year later in early 2019, and I nearly changed my behavior of iPad usage almost completely. Initially I tried to use it for my work and personal use, but eventually I just used it for YouTube, browsing, and gaming, as work is still being done with my laptop (now MBP 15" 2018). To put matters worse, my smart keyboard is broken, so I can't use it anymore except to be a stand where I can watch YouTube while taking shower lol.

I'm an investment associate, and my role would be creating and editing documents, sourcing deals, create meetings through calendar, reading and replying emails, taking notes, and lots of communication; which is why I think the multitasking feature is extremely helpful. The tools of choice in my office is Google Drive (Docs, Sheets, Slides), and I think the Google Apps is quite limited as to what the desktop can do. I used to use it on my 10.5" iPad Pro but now I got back to my laptop to do most of my work.

After a successful project, I got extra allowance for me to purchase the newer iPad Pro, even more incentive to purchase one due to iPadOS. I love all the things about the new feature, especially on features such as desktop-class browsing, same-app multitasking, and external SSD support. Hoping to finally be able to replace my laptop on the day-to-day workflow, I made my purchase, and fully equipped it with Apple Pencil 2 and Smart Keyboard.

I love the usage as I put iPadOS in the new iPad, and I am able to do a lot of work related things (except for creating documents from scratch). The multitasking is amazing and I really love the larger screen real estate compared to the 10.5" iPad Pro. However, one thing that I do miss is the portability. This iPad, although functionally useful, is not too portable in a sense that I use it on my older iPad.

I still do have my 10.5" with me, I use it for everyday media consumption, but I have to bring my laptop with me for work. I can't really work without smart keyboard if you ask me, since it's broken and I can't type there anymore.

So in the end, I miss the portability, but I know I'm going to like the 12.9" iPad Pro. I don't plan to switch to the 11" iPad Pro, although it has occurred to me for a while now if I should buy that one instead. My argument is that if I purchased the 11" iPad Pro, I would get the same experience with the 10.5" iPad Pro, and does not justify my upgrade (I'd rather buy another smart keyboard for it).

My initial plan is to sell my 10.5" iPad Pro, but now I'm considering keeping it for my daily consumption or just trade it with the iPad Mini 5.

So that's my thoughts, but I really need second opinion on this. What do you guys think about it? Thank you.

How do I connect the 2018 iPad Pro to a computer with no USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2019 11:10 PM PDT

All USB-C to USB-A adaptors I can find assume you want to plug in a USB-A plug. I'll be buying an iMac once I save up, but until then what are my options?

    Failed Netflix Downloads

    Posted: 07 Jul 2019 10:40 PM PDT

I can't seem to delete failed downloads from Netflix from my iPad. They show up in the 'Downloaded Videos' section under iPad Storage (see screenshot below), but there is no option to delete them. If I click Edit, I can't select any of the videos. They also don't appear within the Netflix app, so can't delete them from there either. Help please!

    Engineering drawing app for inventor

    Posted: 07 Jul 2019 05:50 PM PDT

Hello everyone! I don´t know if Ill get the answer for my question here, but maybe someone will be able to help me. I'm an engineer who uses a lot of CAD apps. On my laptop, i use autodesk inventor, and on my iPad i use Shapr3D (a great app that uses the potential of the apple pencil). However, i have not been able to find an app that can make engineering drawings in a 2D plane with different views from the CAD file like inventor does, and this is really important for what I do. I also haven't been able to find an app that let's me make assemblies from various CAD parts like inventor does. Anybody know if there's an app that could help me with this?
