Apple replaced my 2015 MacBook Pro with a 2019 model for free!

    Posted: 26 Jul 2019 04:01 AM PDT

I bought my laptop originally in early 2015, almost immediately I started experiencing the anti reflective coating issue (staingate) - I got the screen replaced for free. This happened three times.

I also had a flex cable issue, where my keyboard and trackpad stopped working. I had this twice too.

This was 5 repairs in four years, when I called apple support they offered me a new MacBook Pro Immediately, with slightly better specs.

To make things even sweeter, the total value of the replacement MacBook is actually $200 more than what I originally paid 4 years ago!

Moral of the story: if you've had something on your device repaired multiple times, you can probably swing for a replacement device

CarPlay should work on the iPhone independently

    Posted: 26 Jul 2019 05:26 AM PDT

Like many our vehicles do not have CarPlay. Bluetooth works fine for calls and music. Siri can be hit or miss. We use phone holders for navigation. Just wondering why there isn't an option to display a CarPlay UI on the iPhone regardless of if you're connecting to a vehicle with or without CarPlay.

Why do Macs not allow volume to be adjusted through display port?

    Posted: 26 Jul 2019 10:40 AM PDT

yes i've tried soundflower, it causes glitches and issues, and eats up memory. Caused massive problems with certain videos, or while doing dual windows running sound, like chrome playing music while in a game as well. I'm just curious why they don't have this built into macs when it seems like such a basic thing for every other computer I've used. i'm not sure if its the same with HDMI or not, but right now I'm running thunderbolt to display port and its causing the issues and it's extremely frustrating :(

Multi Resizer: A Mac App to Resize Hundreds of Images in One Go

    Posted: 27 Jul 2019 02:26 AM PDT

Multi Resizer is a Mac app that helps you resize lots of images in just a few clicks.

    Mac App Store Link: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/multi-resizer/id1459186387?ls=1&mt=12

If you don't often work with 100+ image files you won't find Multi Resizer very useful, but if you've ever tried to resize hundreds of images you'll quickly learn it's not so easy.

    Enter Multi Resizer.

Multi Resizer uses multiple targets to output, concurrently, to different folders and to different sizes. Just drag the images in, select the new sizes and destinations in targets, press resize and that's it.

It lets you define a naming scheme for the new generated files so that you can end up for example, with "fullsize_273.jpg", "preview_273.jpg" and "thumb_273.jpg"

It can also be used to change the file type of your images just by adding a new target. It supports JPG, PNG, BMP, GIF, TIFF, and PDF.

I primarily use it to resize thousands of images in one go to upload to a dropbox shared folder and not have to transfer gigabytes of data, and also to generate thumbnails and preview images for web galleries. But i'm sure you can come up with something way more interesting than that.

Multi Resizer is an app that stays out of the way and lets your computer be a computer and do for you the things computers are supposedly good at–compute repetitive tasks–without bothering you.

Thank you for checking out this post. If you have any question I'll be happy to answer it.

Memory Unsafety in Apple's Operating Systems

I've created pretty simple macOS menubar day counter and I'm sharing 40 promocodes

    Posted: 26 Jul 2019 11:05 PM PDT

A year ago, while waiting for a wedding, a three-week vacation and a trip to Bali, I developed an application that counted down the days to these events. After returning, I made some screenshots, created a website, and release it in the App Store. Some people have bought this app, and I'm still using it.

After one year I decided to make update. I've added recurring events, possibility to skip weekends when counting days, add dark/light mode and fix some bugs.

Are AppleCare+ appreciation threads still allowed? I usually am so anti-extended warranty, but...

    Posted: 26 Jul 2019 06:43 PM PDT

I will never purchase another Apple product without it. It already replaced my 2015 iMac which got dropped and damaged in the move, and it has replaced my dropped/bricked cell phone with a brand new XS Max twice now.

I know it's easy to hate on Apple's ecosystem, but having gone full Apple cult a couple years ago I really get it. The ability to effortlessly airdrop my files between my iPad, desktop, and phone, have everything easily auto backup to a persistent online cloud (making it so I don't even have to wonder usually which device a file is on), and the cherry on top - to just be able to use your devices however you want without ever worrying that a drop or theft is gonna rob you of something of value. At most these things are inconveniences - your files are always backed up and safe, and a new/replacement device is just a few blocks away.

I spent a large part of the early 2010s as an Apple hater but damn if the Kool Aid isn't sweet once you're inside the compound.
