MacOS gets extremely sluggish if i leave it open for a while Posted: 27 Jun 2019 07:09 PM PDT MacOS 10.14.5 seems to get very sluggish if it's open with apps running. Looking at top or other task managers don't show anything using up much CPU. Moving the mouse across the dock will just freeze for a few seconds, then jerk after a couple of seconds. The Menu bar becomes unusable with each mouse click taking a few seconds to register. Has anyone else noticed this? The only thing that fixes it is a reboot. I usually just open a terminal window and run sudo reboot. Seems like I have to do it daily. [link] [comments]
HELP! Updgraded to High Sierra now remote file sharing is not working. Posted: 27 Jun 2019 08:15 PM PDT Hi, in our small office, we have a Mac Mini (late 2012) set up and one of it's main usages is that we drop files into a folder on it for our graphic designer to have access to. The graphic designer is not in our office. The person who originally set this system up is no longer in the picture, but today I needed to update the operating system to High Sierra for one of our applications to continue to work. Anyway, after having upgraded to high sierra I can't for the life of me figure out how to get remote file access to work (for someone not on our LAN and not in our office) . So far in the Sharing settings, I have checked File Sharing in the list of services. In the Shared Folders box I have the folder that I need to share. In the users box I have all the users with Read & Write access. up top it says: File Sharing On - Other users can access shared folders on this computer, and administrators all volumes, at "afp://XX.X.X.XX" or "smb://XX.X.X.XX" Now that I'm trying to connect off the lan it won't connect. I'm using Connect to Server (cmd+k) and typing in the ip address that's mentioned in the above message. It tries to connect but eventually is unable and says "There was a problem.... The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time...." Any ideas on why this is not working and any fixes? [link] [comments]

Best Backup Options (Other than Time Machine)? Posted: 28 Jun 2019 12:55 AM PDT What are the best backup apps for macOS if I don't want to use the builtin Time Machine? Although Time Machine is great, it's geared toward doing a total backup, meaning you need to specify what you don't want backed up otherwise, by default, it will backup everything. I'm looking for something that takes the opposite approach—you choose what you want to backup (specific folders, files, etc) from the beginning. Why? Because maybe you want to backup the important stuff and not everything on your system is equally important. Or maybe you want to run different backups simultaneously (e.g., a weekly total system backup and a more specific daily backup of certain crucial documents). Or maybe you only want a backup of your stuff on a multiuser system. Or maybe, for some reason, you want seperate backups of certain types of content (video, photos, audio, etc). Time Machine's approach (total backup of everything) doesn't seem best equipped for these kinds of tasks. Is there a backup option that would be more fitting? [link] [comments]
correct way to set up fresh macos installation with time machine backup Posted: 28 Jun 2019 12:53 AM PDT after every other major macos update, i do a clean install. prior to that, i use time machine to back up my stuff. on the new installation i do not migrate from old time machine backups but i set it up as a new installation. therefore, i have to create a new user even though same name like the old one but, most probably, with a new uid. is this the reason why time machine wont let me restore from my old backups because the users do not match? in fact, the persmission are not correct and folders inside backups have the "probibited" sign even though i'm the owner of the data. but time machine does not know that due to the different users that are only on the surface identical. i don't want to mess with chmod and chown and the like as i'm not familiar with that. the reason why i do not migrate after a clean install is because i don't like what the selective restore offers me. it's not fine grained enough as i want the installation as clean as possible. in know, sounds ocd. but i want it that way. so my question is: how to i use time machine WITH a clean install WHILE maintaining the ability to restore from old back ups? is there a possibility to JUST restore the user without any associated files and so on? thank you for your help! ps: as i ran in to exactly the problem of mismatching permissions, i wonder if there's a possibility to restore them so that i can access my old files. i already tried https://www.baligu.com/pondini/TM/E10.html without success. then chmod and chown are my last resort? [Question] Good app for controlling MacBook Pro’s fans? Posted: 28 Jun 2019 02:43 AM PDT I find that the fans don't turn on until the CPU temperature is well in the late 60's for an extended amount of time. Any good apps for controlling the fans? What's a healthy setting for the fans to be on that won't wear them out too fast but also keeps the CPU relatively regulated? [link] [comments]
[Discussion] Age old question: Safari vs Chrome? Posted: 28 Jun 2019 02:41 AM PDT I use Chrome for torrents, music downloads, adult content (lol)... I use Safari for everything else. I usually use Chrome for things I don't want synced on all my devices. But I do notice that Chrome makes my CPU it's bitch. I also use Chrome on my iPhone. What do you use/prefer? Solution!! For all apps not opening in Catalina Posted: 27 Jun 2019 10:36 AM PDT This is only for the apps being blocked by security and not opening after allowing as well. Disable the block Launch the app and allow the update to complete then re-enable the block. I bet this will also resolve other software not opening as well. [link] [comments]

Posted: 27 Jun 2019 06:13 PM PDT So people out their using Catalina, can you provide more insight about dashboard?I head Apple removed it from Mac. I rely on all the space the dock has with so many stickies and more. If I were to lose its functionality, I'm simply not going to update. [link] [comments]
Still need some way to search files by content... Posted: 27 Jun 2019 08:12 PM PDT I posted about this a month ago, but still don't have any solution. Finder search doesn't find epubs using the Cyrillic alphabet or mobis with any alphabet. Easyfind doesn't find mobis using the Cyrillic alphabet or epubs with any alphabet. (P.S. I use Calibre to convert and export books to my Kindle, so I have a lot of duplicates with 1 epub and 1 mobi. I don't think I need to find both, but right now I can't search and expect to find either.) I checked the App Store and all I got was another migraine. And nausea. From the animation. There are a fair many search tools, but they aren't clear on what languages, with what file types, they support, or how accessible they are. (P.P.S. I also looked up the available formulae for homebrew. There are a fair many search tools, but the project pages aren't clear about what they support, and the Sphinx page contains animation.) My previous post: https://old.reddit.com/r/MacOS/comments/bua1ui/finder_search_doesnt_find_epubs_fixes_alternatives/ Thank you for any suggestions. [link] [comments]
Posted: 27 Jun 2019 02:30 PM PDT Hi all, I'm running Mojave and when I open Safari, it's on the "Keep Exploring" page and is completely frozen otherwise. Upon startup of the app, I see an option quickly appear regarding default browser but Chrome is selected as my default. When I check System Preferences, I'm seeing two Safari options - 10.1.2 and 12.1.1. What should I do to correct this? [link] [comments]
Anyone else notice Slack stops the Apple Watch from unlocking your Mac after a screen share? Posted: 27 Jun 2019 03:35 PM PDT Recently I started getting this issue where I open Slack on my Mac, I work with some co-workers while sharing my screen, and then I end my call. I walk away from the computer for a bit, it locks, I come back and I get an error telling me I cannot unlock my screen with my watch because Screen Sharing is occurring. But I am no longer screen sharing. It only stops when I completely quit Slack. I thought I'd ask here since I suspect a lot of the people here love the Apple Watch unlock feature and many are probably Slack users. [link] [comments]
If you get your MacBook keyboard replaced you’ll basically get a brand new laptop for free Posted: 27 Jun 2019 07:43 AM PDT Basically it's all one piece inside, idk if they chose to do this to keep people from adding custom parts inside or if it's just a design choice, but if you get your keyboard replaced on the new models you'll get your whole internals swapped for new ones for free, I had a funky trackpad, I ran my laptop to the ground from working it pretty hard, needed a new battery because of how many cycles I ran it through, but it's all been replaced completely free, so that's a nice little loophole just from getting your keyboard fixed [link] [comments]

Posted: 27 Jun 2019 03:27 PM PDT When I work my secondary monitor has three preview windows opened, displaying pdf-files of academic articles. The margins are huge with these articles, and in order to make the text bigger I zoom in enough so that the whole width of the texts fills the three windows with minimal margins and largest text possible. I normally do this with my trackpad that do this gradually, but I would like to only use my external keyboard. I know the shortcut Option-Command-Plus (+), but it zooms in in way too big increments, is there a way to adjust this zooming so that it zooms in "less at the time" when using keyboard shortcut? Could this be done in keyboard maestro maybe? The best thing would of course be to be able to set a default zoom as soon as I open preview... [link] [comments]
Any alternatives to Synergy? I need to use keyboard / mouse between PC and Macbook Posted: 27 Jun 2019 10:43 AM PDT There is noticeable lag when I switch over to Mac from Windows enough so that I don't think I'll want to keep using the app. Their troubleshooting page mentions something to do with Wifi spikes but after pinging I saw no such spikes. So anyone know of an alternative? [link] [comments]
MBP 13" 2014 trackpad doesn't work. Keyboard acts like slow keys is on. Posted: 27 Jun 2019 01:46 PM PDT Helping someone with a Mac. Not mine. They claimed the trackpad and keyboard started to act up after updating to Mojave but currently the trackpad doesn't work at all. Keyboard will take inputs on certain keys if I hold the button down long enough. I've tried SMC reset, NVRAM reset, reseating the cables. Installed Mojave on a clean and different drive. Installed High Sierra on same drive after erasing. I'm learning towards the cable is just deteriorating slowly? Everything works flawlessly with a wired keyboard and mouse. [link] [comments]
