Good way to track Mac Disk Health? Posted: 31 May 2019 06:23 PM PDT I had a bit of trouble last evening, Mac crashed, Disk Utility started giving errors for 3 of 4 disks, ran hardware test, restarted, Disk Utility stopped giving errors. I was up all night trying to figure that out, and today, I'm not sure how to check disk health, just in case. The Disk Utility doesn't indicate SMART status, and System Report only indicates it for 1 of 4 disks. (One which failed last night). The smartmontools instructions here aren't working: https://www.maketecheasier.com/check-ssd-health-macos/ So what is a good way to check this? [link] [comments] |

I didn’t think MBP’s lack of I/O was a big deal until my WiFi stopped working Posted: 31 May 2019 06:52 AM PDT I was recently using my 2016 MBP while updating my resumé and noticed that I had lost WiFi connection. In fact, I couldn't even get the WiFi to turn on. I had just updated to the latest beta release and thought it may be a software issue related to that, but I wasn't able to find anyone with similar issues online. I reset the PRAM/NVRAM, booted into recovery mode, and repaired disk permissions but the problem continued to persist. At this point I'm sure it's a hardware issue but since I don't have any vital documents that aren't backed up in the cloud, I figured I would erase the drive and try to start from a fresh OS as a last ditch effort. Except... you need WiFi in order to download the latest OS. And now that there is no longer an Ethernet port on the Macbook Pro, I'll also have to buy a $30 dongle. Except... Apple doesn't make a first party Ethernet dongle that works with 2016 MacBook Pros. The Thunderbolt to Ethernet dongle that I picked up at Best Buy makes no indication that it's Thunderbolt 2 and isn't compatible with Thunderbolt 3 aka USB C. The product photo is also misleading in that it shows a top-down photo of the dongle that appears to be USB C. Apple recommends picking up a Belkin USB C to Ethernet dongle to remedy the issue. Software for making a building map? Posted: 01 Jun 2019 02:31 AM PDT Sorry if this is the wrong sub. If so, can someone point me where to go? Does anyone know of a good open-source software to create a building map of a business? Nothing fancy, like a floor plan map. Just a basic this is where you are/this is where you're going type of map? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Mac and TimeMachine backup over wifi Posted: 31 May 2019 05:01 PM PDT Hell All, I'm trying to setup a way to get Time Machine backups wirelessly though my Arris cable modem (SBG6900-AC) and connecting an external hard drive to it. I turned on the USB Connect settings on the router and I'm going though some steps to create a backup/time machine image on my hard drive but it seems that my Macbook Pro won't find the hard drive. Does anyone know what settings I might need to turn on or look at on my Mac and when I connect to a server and put in the IP address, it asks for a login. Is that my router login or my Macbook Pro login? Thanks for the help/feedback. [link] [comments] |
what is this mysterious audio process? Posted: 31 May 2019 12:32 PM PDT I've no clue what this is or how I got it. I'd like to get rid of it preferably without nuking my system. I've done the obligatory PRAM/NVRAM/SMC and no change. Its the "Internal Speakers(S)" entry. It does nothing and I can't get rid of it thru Audio MIDI setup either. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 May 2019 08:20 AM PDT Occasionally and without any sort of working the sound on my MacBook Pro 2017 just stops working. For example, I'll go to watch a YouTube video or listen to a song on iTunes using the built in speakers rather than headphones and it will be playing but no matter what I do, no sound comes out. I've usually had to just restart my laptop to get sound of the speakers. Anybody else have this problem randomly? Anybody know a way to fix this without having to restart my laptop every time or better yet know the root cause of the problem so I can avoid this in the feature. I am by no means a computer "pro" but I am definitely above the average person in terms of knowledge about computers. [link] [comments] |
Any suggestions on recovery software for external HD that won’t mount? Posted: 31 May 2019 09:16 AM PDT My MacBook (Air 2018) won't recognize or mount my external drive. It used to, but hasn't recently. A couple hours ago it showed up in finder, but wouldn't show the files, but hasn't even done that since. Under storage in about this Mac, it recognizes that an "External 500 GB USB Disk" is connected, but that's it. Out of curiosity I plugged it into my Samsung S9 with a USB to C adapter, and the phone recognized it as a LaCie drive right away, but that it needed to be reformatted. [link] [comments] |
