    Internal storage keeps disappearing

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 06:07 PM PDT

Hello all, I have a 2016 MacBook 12" Retina and the internal storage disappears randomly causing my computer not to boot while flashing a question mark inside a folder.

I have already tried various things like doing a NVRAM/SMC reset, doing first aid/erasing the drive (when it shows up) in Disc Utility while in Recovery, running a diagnostic (came back with no problems detected).

    Nothing seems to help.

Any ideas on what the problem could be/or anything I can try to do and fix this?

Right now I am booting/using my computer on a external USB C flash drive.

    Thanks

    MacBook docking

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 05:47 PM PDT

Any suggestions on docking a MacBook pro. I got a 2015 pro and after it's been off for a while it turns off and the keyboard and mouse don't turn it back on. I'd like it to just sleep until I turn it on. It also doesn't connect to my monitor I'll have to open the laptop, sign in then close it. It gets quite anoying.

Got my A1181 09’ MacBook 5,2 running a 500GB SSD, 4GB Ram, and pushed it from the max OS of El Capitan to Mojave with a patched install USB I put together (: Link to more pictures in the description! Let me know your thoughts, and also what do you think that MacBook would be valued at like this?

2015 Macbook Pro's fan sounds like an engine

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 11:12 PM PDT

Please tell me if I need to crosspost this somewhere else.

I got a Macbook Pro today that was refurbished. It was a replacement for my old one which had battery problems that were unable to be repaired. One thing I noticed is that while everything else seems fine, the fan sounds noticeably different.

The fan itself sounds more like an AC heater rather than the high-pitched fan sound that I'm used to hearing from Macbooks. There's also a clicking/humming sound coming from the fan. It's comparable to the sound of a car engine. As it gets louder and quicker I feel like it might affect the computer so I close all programs using ram. This means I haven't been able to use it for anything other than browsing the internet so far due to being scared of breaking it. Is this normal for a 2015 Macbook? Like I said, it was refurbished so I don't expect it to be in perfect brand new condition, but I want to make sure this is normal and healthy. If it's not, I could try resetting the SMC but that's the only idea I have.

Macbook air 2017 or 2018 Which one to buy?Is the 2018 model worth the extra money?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 09:36 PM PDT

I have been meaning to buy the mac air.The mac air 2017 is available for 970 dollars in my country whereas the 2018 model costs nearly 1600 dollars. I am going to use the mac air for browsing, watching movies and writing. However, being a mechanical undergraduate,i would be requiring to run a few basic designing softwares like auto cad and matlab. I am not that fussed about the retina display and touch id.All that i want is a thin and light laptop that can handle the above tasks.

[Need Advice / Question] Mid 2015 MacBook Pro Battery Recall

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 02:53 PM PDT

tl:dr Had mine repaired in April. Paid for it. Now it would have been free. No refunds per CS.

So, back in March of this year, I sent my son's Mid 2015 15" MBP in for a swollen battery. Apple confirmed, yes it's a swollen battery we'll replace it for you. They did a top swap / replacement and charged my CC. I get it back and all is fine. Fast forward to the 20th when I read that there is now a recall on that MBP. I called support to see about a refund since the repair is now covered under a recall. No dice. The CS agent said that even his 'Senior' advisor cannot issue a refund for the repair. What do you all think? Should I try again but escalate it? Should I just suck it up and leave it be? I know in the auto industry, if a repair becomes a recall, you typically get a letter with instructions on getting reimbursed.

[EDIT-1] The repair was requested on 3/30 with the repair made and paid for in April.

What to choose, MBP 2015 or MBA 2017

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 08:50 PM PDT

    Hello guys,

so currently i use a lenovo laptop. and i decide to upgrade to MacBook, because i will college in September. I need a suggestion between MBP 2015 or MBA 2017

    1. My budget is approx. 1000 - 1500
    2. My requirement is simple video editing, programming (PHP, Swift, and sometimes Android Studio), watching movie, and other office jobs
    3. And im interested with Butterfly keyboard.
    4. And Retina Display
    5. For storage, maybe 256GB SSD is enough (because 85% of my jobs done online)

Thank you guys for answering my question

[Question/Help Needed] Mail app opens itself upon waking macbook pro or closing out of another program. How do I stop this from happening?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 07:33 AM PDT

I have a 15-inch 2019 MacBook Pro running macOS Mojave. Whenever I wake my computer or close out of a full screen application, the stock apple mail app "pops up" itself. To clarify, I leave it running in the background, so it's open already, it just maximizes itself as if I clicked on the icon in the dock. It's the same unresolved issue I have found here:

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1853470

    https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/stop-mail-from-automatically-opening.1341067/

    https://superuser.com/questions/154650/mac-os-x-finder-window-keeps-opening-by-itself-and-stealing-focus

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7540901

It's super annoying I can't seem to find any way to prevent it other than just quitting the mail app when I am not using it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

What to do with broken MacBook Pro 2017 non-touch bar - worth trying to sell?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 11:48 AM PDT

So, its nothing that cannot be fixed, but I have replaced my 128GB 2017 MacBook Pro non-touch bar with a 2018 512GB, after it began experiencing issues with the kernel panics and Apple said it would require a £500ish logic board replacement. Is it worth selling on at a low price with the info that it needs repairs ... as in, would there be much of a market for such a machine ..., or should I just recycle it?

    Antivirus for MacBook?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 05:34 AM PDT

I have done some googling and I don't find a definitive answer. So I'm hoping you guys can help me make a decision.

I just got a MacBook Air. it is my first non-Windows laptop ever. I use it for work (I work from home), which involves a lot of MS Excel, Word, Team, and Skype, and browsing, and a lot of emailing. I never download movies/tv shows or anything fishy. I am the only one using my laptop.

My Windows 10 desktop PC is doing fine without an antivirus.

So, do I need to install an antivirus on my laptop? Can I pass a virus to someone on a windows PC by email without knowing it? How likely am I to get a virus from doing research on a "bad" website?

    Thanks

External screen no longer recognized after NVRAM/PRAM reset - 2011 17" MBP

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 10:02 AM PDT

I have been happily using an external Dell screen attached via a display-port to DVI adapter plugged into the Thunderbolt port on my 2011 17" MBP

For other reasons I decided to do a NVRAM/PRAM reset

Upon rebooting my system fails to recognize the existence of this screen. I have tried unplugging the adapter and plugging it back in; doing an SMC reset: rebooting numerous times; doing the "Detect Displays" process in System Preferences>Displays all to no avail.

The adapter was plugged into the Thunderbolt port while I did the reset (was this my fatal mistake? could I have fried it?)

    Any ideas?

System Report Details in case this helps:

Macbook damaged from being in very steamy room?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 06:50 AM PDT

    Hey everyone.

I was getting in the shower yesterday when I thought it would be a good idea to play some music on my late 2016 13" MacBook Pro. I opened Spotify when I realized the shower was very hot and the window was closed, so the small bathroom was filled with steam. I rushed it out of the bathroom in fear of hurting it. I opened it this morning and the screen flickered black for about 20 seconds and then resumed operating normally. Did I maybe damage the laptop, or is MacOS just being weird?

    thanks,
