Perspective - Apple Watch vs Garmin Posted: 08 Feb 2019 08:06 AM PST I have owned several Apple Watches, with the Series 4 WiFi/Cellular being my most recent. The purpose of this post is just to give some insight to others who may be in the situation that I was. The watches I am comparing are similar in price, the AW4 SS and the Garmin Fenix 5. I am not an elite athlete or long-distance runner. I do run, bike, hike, fish, ski, golf, etc. Our family is very active. We travel a lot. I used the AW3 for about a year and the AW4 from just after launch. I have owned Garmin watches in the past. The Apple Watch: AW4 is by far the best AW ever. The screen is amazing. The HRM is possibly the best wrist/optical HRM on any device ever.. to date. Wrist-based HRM will always perform not as well at sports where there is flex in the arm/wrist like cross training. In addition, wrist-based HRM are not optimal for quick internal work as there can be a lag in it keeping up with the HR. In my test, quick intervals were better managed by the AW4 than the Garmin (935). However, if you make those intervals a tad longer the difference isn't as huge as the Garmin ramps up and down reasonably well. Obligatory note that yes.. chest strap solves all of this for both. The apps available for the AW are very good. AutoSleep, WorkOutDoors, Zones, Carrot Weather, etc.. all great apps. GPS on the AW4 is very good... and better IMO if you leave your phone at home or turn off BT so the GPS from the AW can take over. My issues with the AW... - Battery.. battery.. battery. Less than 2 days. I was getting about 1.5 and I slept with my AW as I loved AutoSleep data. - Apps on apps on apps.. for one thing. There are apps that are great but if I want my HR training zone data I need to use Zone (data can be reviewed when other apps used for activity.. I still get this data from Garmin-based activities). WorkOutDoors is AMAZING.. and if the battery life of the AW was greater than 5 days WOD would be the app that kept me with the AW4. - Durability. I have AC+ but I feel like with the activities I do I would end up using it. When I wore the AW4 (SS) it was such a good looking piece of hardware.. but I found myself changing the way I moved around during the day to not hit it on things.. even like going through some bushes around a gate (that need to be trimmed back) to feed my dog. In general, if the AW4 lasted 5+ days I likely would have kept it and rolled the dice knowing I had AC+. The Garmin Fenix 5: - Where the AW4 looks sleek and refined.. the Fenix 5 screams.. let's get some isssh done. - I think the look of the Fenix on the wrist is awesome. Classic but rugged. - Real buttons.. I didn't think I wanted or cared but being able to make some selections during an activity without looking immediately and then checking when ready is awesome. I also love that I can glance down (no wrist-raise) and see data points during exercise. The screen in bright sunlight is perfection.. big with amazing clarity.
Everyone has different needs and requirements.. hopefully this will provide some insight to anyone in the situation I was in. [link] [comments]

Sleep Cycle no longer good enough .. Posted: 08 Feb 2019 08:06 AM PST Hi All Looks when it comes to sleep tracking ,sleep cycle has regressed while others like sleepwatch, autosleep ,pillow etc have move on. The most annoying is the fact I find sleep cycle waking me up at exactly the same time every day, as opposed to waking me up at the optimal time ! There time when I'm in light sleep or awake and the alarm doesn't go off ; and then there are times when I'm in a deep sleep cycle and the alarm goes off. Has anyone experienced this ? Posted: 08 Feb 2019 02:59 AM PST Hi. I'm a bit confused about the calibration: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204516 Is it necessary for a new watch? Has anyone done any tests to check improvements in accuracy? It seems fairly easy and straight forward to calibrate. Just start a walk or run in the workout app. But step 1 says:
How important is this? How am I supposed to find a 20 minute (2km at avg walking speed) flat area? It also continues to say the following, which is kind of contradictory to step 1.
Will walking up or down a hill screw up the calibration? Thanks! [link] [comments]

Autosleep vs Pillow va SleepWatch Posted: 08 Feb 2019 06:28 AM PST Hi mates. I decided to start monitoring my sleep. Thanks to this sub I know these three apps are the most appreciated and more often mentioned: but can someone provide some feedback on each or a comparison? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]
AW3 cant send imessage without phone connected - is this error or normal? Posted: 08 Feb 2019 06:23 AM PST Hi all, please can you help me with problem with my apple watch series 3? My apple watch are not able to send the iMessage itself (apple ID signed in, wifi is turned on and connected). I need to connect with my phone on wifi/data and then, finally my iMessage is sent. The same problem i have with email app. The new email cant be received without my phone connected to wifi/data, even if the watches itself are connected to wifi. Is this how the AWs3 works, or I am doing something wrong? Can the iMessage work without phone connected to wifi, just with the watches connected to the wifi? Thank you all for the answers! List all apps for a good watch face complication Posted: 07 Feb 2019 02:40 PM PST Here we go again, pls add your app suggestions, APPNAME/LINK and a little description. RemoteBattery gives you complications that display your iPhone's battery level, in exactly the same designs as your innate watch complications show the battery level for your watch: so you can put them next to each other neatly. In addition, my favourite feature is that you can set notifications to alert you when your watch or iPhone is at a certain battery level. So for example you can set both to 50% and 100%, which will alert you on your phone when your watch is at either of those levels, and similarly, alert you on your watch, when your iPhone battery is at either. You can customise both levels independently for both devices. I use it to tell me when my watch has finished charging. BatteryPhone is a much simpler app, which gives you a complication showing your iPhone battery level. Alternatively, it can display both the iPhone and watch battery levels. I have not got the notifications to work, however. Smart Record has a complication that immediately starts recording when you tap it. This is by far the best one I have tried, as most other recording complications simply open the recording app, adding an extra step. This one skips that step, and automatically starts recording. Pedometer has a complication that displays the number of steps you have taken that day, alongside bars counting them, in relation to the goal you set. Edit: I will add more since this thread picked up traction; I apologise in advance for no alphabetical nor apparent order, I merely noted them down as I came across them. I will clear it up if I have time, later. Shazam: Use to identify music. Tap the complication to start listening; when it detects the song, it will give you the artist and song title. Night Sky: VR app where you press the complication, and it immediately brings up a map of the stars and planets. As you move the watch around, the map will move, and you can follow the location of things in the sky. For example, if you want to know if that dot in the sky is Mars, press the complication, and hold the watch up to the dot: it will tell you what the dot actually is. Voice Record 7: another recording complication; when you tap it, it brings up a menu asking you whether you want to play a saved recording, or make a new one. So not quite as instant as Smart Record. Voice Record: the earlier app of Voice Record 7, above. Press to bring up the same menu. Dictaphone: simple icon tagged you straight to play/record menu. Does not directly record. Weather Live: displays an icon representing the current weather conditions. Press for more details, and forecast. Recorder: actually this complication starts recording audio from a single press, much like Smart Record, so this is another great option for recording audio. Rainface: much like Weather Conditions, complication displays icon representing current conditions, which you can press for a more detailed forecast. Pllow: sleep tracking app. Complication is not that interesting; simply press it for quick access to the menu that enables you to start tracking. Sleep Cycle: sleep tracking app. Same functionality as Pillow's complication, above. Outlook: mail app for Outlook/Hotmail email addresses. Complication both provides quick access to the inbox, and alternatively displays information on upcoming events. MapMyWalk: name says it all. Complication is rather interesting; merely press for quick access to the app. Life Cycle: complication simply displays time at current location, from what I can tell. Tap to access app. Launcher: customisable shortcut you can program in the app. Complication is merely a simple icon. IFTTT: app with customisable widgets that link actions between apps. Complication is simple icon shortcut to widgets. Hue: simple icon shortcut for Philips Hue smart lighting - takes you to your preset widget menu. CNN: News app - complication displays headline, or acts as a shortcut to the app. Citymapper: journey planner. Complication displays ETA to set journey, and acts as shortcut to app. AccuWeather: displays temperature and current weather conditions. [link] [comments]

Since getting an AW, have you removed the vibration from your iPhone? Posted: 08 Feb 2019 09:26 AM PST Turned mine off since I always tend to have the watch on me and kinda seemed redundant to have both my watch and phone vibrate. Wanted to see what others opinions are on this. [link] [comments]
Apple Watch Band Adapter Colors Posted: 08 Feb 2019 08:51 AM PST Tought I could help anybody by sharing my newly arrived Apple Watch Band Adapters for my Series 4 Stainless Steel Gold. It seems that no one provides any color that comes really close to Apple's gold PVD. It's a shame that Apple doesn't deliver any of their leather bands with matching Watch Adapters. So I bought third party ones in space black and rósegold. Here are some pics with comparison to the gold Milanaise Loop Adapter. Apple Gold, Rósegold, Space Black Has anybody found any good matching ones yet? [link] [comments]

How to get Watch to Read Texts Out Loud Posted: 08 Feb 2019 08:29 AM PST How in the world do I get Siri to read my texts on my watch? While on the road, this would be an awesome feature.... When I ask Siri "read my text" her stupid response is "I can read off your iPhone ". I have searched high and low and don't see what options to make her read my texts. If I turn accessibility and voice over, then siri has to make an annoying comment about every pushed button/screen on the watch..blech to that Series 4 watch btw. Anyone can help here?? Is there an app that triggers a move Reminder that is more intense than Stand Reminder? Posted: 08 Feb 2019 07:47 AM PST My friend has a Fitbit and every hour or so it reminds her that she needs to walk 250 (she set the number) steps. Is there anything for the Apple watch like that? [link] [comments]
Posted: 07 Feb 2019 08:50 PM PST I believe this has already been answered but I can't remember where. I've started listening to music while I run but I hate taking my phone with me. The official Spotify app for Watch doesn't allow you to stream off your watch. Is there any Watch app that lets you download and stream your Spotify music off of it? [link] [comments]
Posted: 08 Feb 2019 05:53 AM PST I currently use JefitPro to list my workouts, sets, and weights down to track my progress but is there an app that lets me do it in my Apple Watch? I'd rather leave my phone behind in the lockers [link] [comments]
