Desperate need of help - MacBook Air won’t turn on and I need to access important files!

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 07:18 PM PST

    Hey guys,

My MacBook Air has decided it won't turn on - it's had this problem before where it won't turn on at all (even after several troubleshooting steps and such) but then by some miracle decides one day to live again. Unfortunately this week I haven't been so lucky.

After calling Apple and doing several things asked, it has been declared that the computer needs some kind of special reboot - I'm told that this means all the files will be wiped.

    So here lies my problem.

Without being able to turn the laptop on, how can I back up or restore my files so they're safe?

    salvageable after water damage?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 05:47 PM PST

I have a macbook pro 2018 with no touch bar. spilled a bunch of water on it and it powered off and died.

however, a few weeks later my dad helped me open it up and did some magic (idk), and it started to work again but ONLY when it's connected to my power source, otherwise it goes dead. the battery icon won't show up and no matter how long it is charged it displays 0%. this was fine for a while, just lived with it.

unfortunately, i recently began unable to use it with wifi because the time wouldn't update no matter what.

any advice? I went to the apple store and they said it would be $800 but that a third party retailer may be cheaper.

I have to choose between these two macbooks. Which is most likely to serve me the best? I use Ableton live to make music and do a lot of writing. I want the fastest and most likely to last me the longest

Charge the MBP 15 2018 via The monitor

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 06:43 AM PST

Hey, i saw some monitors with type c port, that in one usb type-c cable, they can charge the MBP 15 2018 and also output video on 4k@60hz to the monitor.

But unfortunately i'v got "only" a DP,mini DP, and usb's ports on my monitor.

There is a way to do the same in my monitor (via DP Because the 60hz)??

One of the others monitors for example:

Should I get a dgpu in my 15" 2014/15 Macbook Pro? (Please help!) :)

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 10:20 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

I am in the market for a new (old) Macbook and I am trying to get a machine that has the fastest UI possible and that will allow me to learn programming well, while I browse the internet as a distraction. I doubt I would be interested in playing many or any games.

At the moment, I am not doing anything 3D and I don't play games anymore. I may be interested in learning 3D gaming in the future, but from what I understand, the Iris Pro processors are good enough to do light 3D work with a good processor, and I am planning on getting a i7 2.8GHZ and 16GB RAM.

Its true, that the price difference between a unit with a dGPU and one without is not that large, but have heard people having issues with DGPU and that Macs aren't always that great doing switching. Also that they get hot; I do not want a space heater!

So my question is: If I don't need a dGPU, would I be better off without one?

I appreciate any help. I need to make up my mind!

    2017 13' MBP or 2018 MBA

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 09:40 AM PST

I am deciding to pick up a MacBook(either pro or air), but recently the flexgate issue has stopped me from purchasing it, I haven't hear anyone mention about flexgate on the new MBA. I will be using it for xcode, some photo editing and a bit of video rendering. I prefer MBP for the performance but I am afraid of the display issue. What is your opinion?

    12” macbook for 1000 or 13.3” MBA for 1400?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 07:49 AM PST

Curious what's the better deal here? 12 MacBook is from 2017 and MBA is from 2018.

I mostly use it for word processing, excel, power point + browsing the net (multiple tabs) and Netflix/YouTube.

    Macbook System Storage 100+ GB

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 07:33 AM PST

My Macbook system storage is taking up over 100 GB of my drive, and I can no longer complete system updates due to this. I have tried the method of deleted local snapshots (none were found in the terminal) and downloaded CleanMyMac only for them to find 3.5 GB in caches that can be deleted. Those two things seem to be what usually contributes to this problem, so I'm out of ideas and this is my last resort before going to Apple themselves. If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated.

Help ... Cannot boot into recovery; Key keep repeating ...

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 02:49 AM PST

I own a MacBook Pro 2015 13". Recently it has been malfunctioning as hell ...

    1. When booted, some keys are not working.
      > Workaround ... Keep clicking Option key during boot time all the keys just work normally
    2. Then when using, "." key is randomly repeating without my touching anything! Sometimes when Esc is pressed, it stops and occur again ...
    3. I assume that this is some kind of software issue so I tried to turn it off. Cmd+R+Power to try to boot into recovery. Nope... It cannot boot into recovery! Also tried Bootup disk option / internet recovery but the fking Macbook still boots into Login Screen. I even tried using external bootup USB but since I cannot get to boot option, I cannot make use of it :(

I have no idea what's going on with the Macbook :( Some have similar behavior with disk encryption enabled, and I had too! I turned it off after encountering this problem but problem still persists.

    Anyone has encounter this?
