    Just say "No!" to subscriptions

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 04:00 AM PST

    https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2019/02/how-apple-and-app-developers-will-try-to-entice-you-to-subscribe-not-just-pay-once/

Unless I simply cannot live w/o an App, I refuse to be a sucker and shell out month after month, year after year, to use an app. Period. YMMV.

If enough of us just walk away and refuse, the app developers will have to reconsider whether moving to the subscription mode makes economic sense for them.

I figured out a way to permanently hide the 4 annoying popups to "View BLAHBLAH in the official app" when browsing this site on Safari

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 11:37 AM PST

I have shared this a few months back but seems like Reddit recently updated and added another popup to their mobile site. So I did some digging and thought I would share the new adguard rules to hide the annoying popups. I sometimes use google searches to find specific reddit posts and these popups have been getting very annoying recently. I was extremely annoyed by these popups taking over half my screen and not accepting "No" as an answer. This also lets me hide the other "Open Reddit App" and "Use App" buttons as I don't use the official reddit app anyway so they were pointless.

Before/After Screenshot of what I am talking about:

    https://i.imgur.com/SPdSs8Y.png

It also hides google AMP banners for reddit as shown here:

    Before: https://www.dropbox.com/s/du8hz9tch93ttyl/Photo%202018-11-14%2C%2011%2038%2018%20PM.png?dl=0

    After: https://www.dropbox.com/s/nwd4ksm5n32sl0t/Photo%202018-11-14%2C%2011%2037%2043%20PM.png?dl=0

    Steps:

    1. Use any free content blocker app available on store. I used AdGuard. The free version pretty much lets me do everything I need. I am NOT affiliated by them in any way.
    2. In your content blocker app of choice, enter rules to hide the following classes:

.dualpartinterstitial (this is for the bottom huge banner)

.topbutton (This is for the "Use App" button at top)

.xpromopill (This is for the "Open Reddit App" button at the bottom)

      .upsell_banner (For Google AMP Pages)

.xpromopopup (The full screen modal popup with "See this community popup")

      .adlinkbar (The "Promoted" links)

    3. So for AdGuard, launch the app, go to "User Filter" and enter the following:

      reddit.com##.dualpartinterstitial,.topbutton,.xpromopill,.xpromopopup,.adlinkbar

      ##.upsell_banner

NOTE: the .upsell_banner is used for when Reddit opens via Google AMP and since it's coming from Google's domain and not Reddit's, .upsell_banner needs to be in a separate line.

    Here's a screenshot of it all: https://www.dropbox.com/s/pai7ilhad6160xe/adguardrules.jpeg?dl=0

    1. Tap Done and it will take a few seconds to take effect.
    2. Completely quit Safari from the app switcher.
    3. Now whenever you visit reddit on safari, those would be permanently hidden!

NOTE: You can hide other UI elements on other websites this way too. However one thing I figured out while testing this was a bug (not sure if a reddit bug or AdGuard bug) is that the class names need to be entered all lower cased for it to work.

    Hope this helps someone!

apps under password after iTunes sync problem

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 04:37 AM PST

Every time i sync my X to iTunes, make backup, transfer some tunes and such.

It needs to enter my apple id password while i open certain apps. Not a big problem, but i don't like it to do so.

Is there a way to stop this behavior? What is causing it?

How can I keep photos in iCloud while deleting them in iPhone?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 04:55 AM PST

When I delete my photos and videos on my iPhone they also get deleted in my iCloud. My questions are:

    • What must I do to save my photos as a backup in iCloud while deleting them on my iPhone?

    • Where is the best place to educate myself on the technology for my iPhone and iMac?

    • Where do I go on my iPhone to see the exact type of iPhone I am using?

    Thank you for your help.

Having issues with timers and alarms

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 04:42 AM PST

I use alarms and timers extensively to help with my memory. Twice now in the last day I have had an alarm and a timer go off at the wrong time.

I have an alarm set for 1055 when I work so I can record a piece of data that gets reset at 11. This alarm didn't go off until 1106 yesterday.

This morning I set a timer for 29 minutes that should've gone off around 716. Around 730 I realized my alarm hadn't gone off and I hadn't checked on the thing I was supposed to look at. I checked the timer and it was still counting down but had another 17 minutes left on it.

I've never had an issue with the clock before but I really need it to work. I routinely have to get up at 330 am for work so I need to be able to trust the alarms. I'm updated to the most recent version and using an iPhone 6s

Older messages from one of my contacts won’t load

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 06:07 PM PST

For everyone else, it works fine, but for one of my contacts, I scroll all the way up to load older messages and they won't load. If I use the search function, then I can find the older messages, but simply scrolling up won't work. Any help? I've tried resetting all settings and restarting my phone but it didn't work.

It would be nice to have filtering within in the App Store

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 09:32 AM PST

Filter by Avg User Rating, User Rating of at least x, Top Downloaded Today, This Year, All-Time, Locally...

Also by most recently updated, optimized for iPhone XR/XS Max... AR, Editors Choice, App is on 'Other website's Recommended List of must have apps for 2019....'

Seems like a relatively simple Improvement to the App Store UI/UX that Apple could quickly implement.

    Reddit links open in Safari?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 09:00 PM PST

Does anyone know a way to have Reddit links automatically open in the official Reddit app?

Anytime someone sends me a link, it goes to safari by default after a recent update and I haven't been able to figure out why

Wifi at my dorm room keeps redirecing to a phishing site, doesn’t happen on home wifi

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 08:08 PM PST

Can I fairly assume this has nothing to do with my ipad/iphone?

Safari keeps redirecting (not opening a new tab) to this phishing site pretty frequently, seems to happen on a wide variety of mainstream websites just as well

Does anyone know if this could be a router issues? It only happens on this specific wifi network, neither device ever has this happen on any other wifi or mobile network..

Thanks in advance for any and all insights!

I figured out how to open a reddit link from Messages in the reddit app!

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 07:33 PM PST

Deep press on the link, don't let go when the preview comes up (but lighten up to a "touch"), then deep press on the preview!

I've been hating reddit links opening in safari and no one has a good solution, but this works.

    Messages simulation app

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 04:15 PM PST

Is there an app, that can give me notifications throughout the day, that look like real messages? Basically a fake messages app, that sends me fake texts like "hey wyd" from "friends", "family" and such, so it looks like it's from real people?

Thank you, I'll appreciate everything remotely similar, even something like friend bots that you can chat with.

Question: FULL backup of old iPad with iTunes to restore onto new iPad. All data included?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 01:43 PM PST

I've got an old iPad 2 running ios 9. I am finally replacing it with a new iPad Pro.

If I do a full backup in iTunes, can I restore that onto the new iPad and include data internal to apps? Would that include files inside the VLC app, pdfs in reader apps, and my location in audiobooks?

If anyone has experience with something like this, I would love the feedback.
