Delete local copies of photos but keep them in iCloud?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2019 06:05 PM PST

Hi all, sorry if this is an obvious question, but I've just spent nearly 2 weeks organising and uploading photos to Icloud Photos using a VERY slow internet connection and would rather it all not be lost.

Is it possible to delete photos from my Macbook (or to move them to an external drive) and still have the uploaded copies of them available to access on iCloud Photos? There is roughly 40GB of photos so removing them from my hard drive will free up a lot of space, but I'd still like to access them through iCloud as they are all uploaded with no issues.

    High Sierra USB installer

    Posted: 14 Jan 2019 01:00 AM PST

My Macbook Retina (2015) in High Sierra crashed last week and would only start on safe mode. "Too bad", I thought. But it was the perfect excuse to try Mojave, so I backed up my data, downlaoded Mojave installer and run the installer.

The installation did not complete. It copied the files, but when I try to start the Macbook for the first time, the progress bar stops at about 10%, every time.

Internet recommended to reset SMC and PRAM, and so I did, unfortunately with zero results.

Now I am stuck with a laptop that I cannot even start in Safe mode. Well, I decided to go back to High Sierra, but I cannot get a USB installer from anywhere (I just have the installer for Mojave and a Windows Laptop).

I cannot download the High Sierra installer without a functional High Sierra. I have checked several guides such as:

    https://www.wikigain.com/create-macos-high-sierra-bootable-usb-installer-windows-10/

However many people recommend NOT to use those images since they may contain viruses, but I am empty of ideas on how to get the original dmg

    Help?

    32bit application support

    Posted: 14 Jan 2019 12:50 AM PST

My notebook is not aging well and developing some serious issues. Work has supplied me with a Macbook as a temp replacement and I find myself really appreciating it.

I'm now playing with the idea of upgrading to a Macbook after the 2019 models have been released.

There's still quite a list of issues. The lack of repairability, no Linux compatibility, etc. But that's not the scope of this question.

I recently found out that MacOs will drop 32bit support iin the future. Most apps that I use have long made the transition. But there are some old games that I like to play from time to time. Valve's Proton (or Wine) does a really good job at casual gaming on my Ubuntu Thinkpad.

So what does this transition mean? Is there going to be legacy support, or is this going to be done ios style, where lots of applications just become unusable.

    MacOs Mojave Slowness

    Posted: 13 Jan 2019 03:15 PM PST

    Hey Everyone,

I have a Macbook pro 15" 2015 and a little while ago upgraded from High Sierra to Mojave. I've noticed some everyday slowness since I updated like: lag between switching desktops or opening applications and the increase of heat that the laptop has when I open applications and programs such as Final Cut Pro or Lightroom CC.

Has anyone else run into similar situations?

    Thanks!

    Mail.app randomly pops up.

As title. This is so annoying. I found a thread on this sub but it's already locked and the method didn't work for me(I think this has something to do with google's interface update I can't exactly follow the instructions).
    Thanks in advance.

My new Mac's space bar suddenly troubles me (excess periods when hitting space. bar)

    Posted: 13 Jan 2019 09:31 AM PST

I am completely lost on this one. Whenever I type, my Mac adds. a. dot here. and there, without. me intending to do so. I have no idea what to do about. it. or what causes it. It didn't. happen when I. unwrapped it. first. but it's been doing. it. for a week or so now and it's super. frustrating. It does. not matter what application I. use. and I have tried rebooting but it's not helping. Has anyone else seen this behavior occur and found. a solution?

    (I. did. not add all these. periods - my Mac does it on its. own).

    Your disk is almost full

    Posted: 13 Jan 2019 04:44 PM PST

This popup saying my disk is almost full appears literally every 30 seconds. It's becoming incredibly annoying and I need to find a way to just silence it. I have a few gigabytes of free space, this is what I always have and I find it fine to work with, but now this message won't shut up.

    iMac Crashes on Shut Down

    Posted: 13 Jan 2019 04:43 PM PST

I have an iMac Retina 5K, 27-Inch, 2017, 4.2 GHz Intel Core i7 Quad Core, 2 TB Fusion Drive, 16 GB RAM, and running the latest version of MacOS Mojave.

All too often when I go to shut this down, I get an error message that states that something went wrong and it restarts.

Any ideas of what could be causing this or where to start looking into this?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2019 04:03 PM PST

    Hello guys,

I have seen online bad review of Mojave performance vs sierra on boot time for example.

I wanted to wait a good version of Mojave before moving on Mojave.

Do you have some advice about it ?

    thanks for your help

One application froze, had to force a hard shutdown, what next?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2019 02:47 PM PST

Short version is - I was using an IDE (Visual Studio Code) on my Mac - when it froze. I got the swirling rainbow. All of the sudden, the icon in the dock also got the question-mark over it (this was without me doing anything at all).

I tried to force quit the process, but it wouldn't quit. A kill -9 was being ignored as well.

I figured a restart was in order, but upon trying to restart, the computer actually froze. It was stuck on a black screen with the gray swirling "working" indicator, but the indicator was moving extremely slowly and eventually seemed to stop. I held the power button for 10 seconds to force the computer to turn off.

Upon turning it back on, everything appears to be working. But why would the OS all of the sudden lose the location of the application, and be unable to quit it? Should I be checking for corrupted system files - doing a fresh OS install, maybe?

Help upgrading from 256 HD to 500GB SSD, can't expand partition after clone

    Posted: 13 Jan 2019 06:20 AM PST

Upgraded a mid-2010 Macbook Pro running 10.12.6 from the 256GB HD to a 500GB SSD, using an external SATA dual dock to make the clone. Popped the SSD into the machine and it's blazing fast and working well. The issue is the Macintosh partition was as expected still 256 GB, and the SSD has twice that capacity.

A quick visit to disk utilities and tried to expand the size of the partition. Then I started to see various errors. Things like "Invalid directory item count (It should be 5510 instead of 5511)The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired Error: This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the Command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo. When the OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility."

and File System Check Exit Code 8. Pretty confident these errors were on the original spinning 256 GB drive and just cloned over.

I booted the machine into recovery, ran disk utilities and it found the same errors and attempted to fix them so I could enlarge the partition. No success.

I don't want to reload the OS. There's a version of Office installed that I no longer have the key to reinstall. The computer is working great right now...just have access to half the size of the new 500 GB SSD.

Any thoughts on how to get a working copy of the 256GB hd working using the full 500 GB of the SSD? I've read about using super duper and a few other tools and will gladly try them if that's the solution. Thank you for your guidance. Sean
