Weekly /r/iOSGaming Discussion - What have you been playing lately and what do you recommend? - January 14, 2019

    Posted: 13 Jan 2019 08:11 PM PST

Please use this thread to discuss whatever iOS games you've been playing lately. They don't have to be new games, they can be old games and they do not have to be iOS original titles!

As long as it's an iOS game it belongs in here. Make sure to put the name(s) of the game(s) in bold to make it easier for people skimming the thread to see what you're talking about, and if you'd like to make it really convenient turn the game name into a hyperlink that sends people directly to the App Store!

To keep track of the thread, the comments are sorted by "new" by default.

Changes to the self promotion rule - promotions are now only allowed on Saturday - and a few other things

    Posted: 14 Jan 2019 05:39 AM PST

Hi all, hope all is going well.

Last week we posted this: https://www.reddit.com/r/iosgaming/comments/adlw0t/regarding_self_promotion_how_should_we_do_it/ deciding what you wanted to be done in regards to self promotion. Looking at the results, one day a week were popular. So, regarding self promotion:

    1. Self promotion posts are only allowed on Saturdays. If you see any, or post any, posted on any other day please flag them.
    2. You do not need to message the moderators on Saturdays to get permission to post your game. However, any spam will be dealt with accordingly, and please report any spam you see. We will still view all posts to make sure they fall within our guidelines and Reddits guidelines.
    3. If your account is mainly for promotion, and you have over 10% of your account being promotion, you need to message the moderators before posting. This is a Reddit rule and one we support on the subreddit to prevent shilling and spam.

We hope you like the new rules, and that it makes the subreddit a better place. These rules are in effect from now.

I just want to add a note that harassing users via DMs on both Reddit, and your Discord server, is against the rules of Reddit, and our Discord server rules. Anyone who is being harassed should contact the Reddit admins and report it. On Discord, please contact us.

There has also been a recent rise in the amount of people asking for account details to download a game. Never give these out - you can lose your Apple ID doing this. Please report any begging posts to the mods via flagging it, and if it is extreme enough, messaging us.

Finally, thanks for reading and posting - if you have any feedback, questions or concerns, please comment or message us.

    Thanks!

I accidentally put 22 bucks on my account which I probably won’t be getting back, so I might as well commit. What is your all-time favorite iOS game or port, and why?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2019 03:28 PM PST

Apple Pay is not available in my country, and for some reason I thought putting money on my Apple ID would enable me to use that money with Apple Pay. In retrospect, that was incredibly stupid, because I can't and I actually already kind of knew that.

However, if I spend it on some great games, loading those 22 bucks on my account might actually have been a great decision. So, what are your all-time favourite iOS game that might make my initial mistake worth it?

Gamers needed for study on social relations and wellbeing!

    Posted: 13 Jan 2019 10:41 AM PST

My name is Daniel Macintyre and I am a final year undergraduate student at Liverpool John Moores University. I am looking for volunteers to complete a questionnaire on the sociability and wellbeing of people who play video games. The questionnaire will ask you questions such as how long you play for, the types of games you play, your use of in-game chat or party chat and how your 'real' life and social life is managed around gaming social life.

Completing the questionnaire should take you no longer than ten minutes. If you are interested in taking part, please click on the link below to read a participation information sheet (containing full details about the study). The study has been fully approved by the Public Health Institute's Research Ethics Committee.

I would be grateful if you could share this link with other gamers in order to have as many people answer the questionnaire as possible.

When you're ready, you can open the questionnaire by clicking here.

iOS Gaming no. 17: BanG Dream! Girls Band Party!

    Posted: 13 Jan 2019 02:51 PM PST

    Introduction

Good afternoon to all you wonderfully friendly folks! This week, we are incredibly efficient and manage to enjoy a visual novel and play a rhythm game! With what black magic can we accomplish this, you ask? By the power of anime and this week's game, I present BanG Dream! Girls Band Party!

I would like to take a moment to thank @Jesterful#3000 from the Trinity Force Network Discord server for his recommendation. It's a fun game, and I have enjoyed it—although I still have no idea why the gacha is appealing.

Additionally, if you would like to read the previous review please click here. If congratulating me on my fine taste in wine is your jam, you can do so on the Trinity Force Network Discord server, or in the r/iOSGaming server by messaging me directly on Discord @Syger#2331, on Reddit, or by sending me an [email](mailto:syger@trinityforcenetwork.com) (Please don't abuse my inbox)!

    Details & Summary

Anime, a fairly wholesome story, and music—what's not to like!? Recommended for folks who enjoy (or at least tolerate) anime, rhythm games, visual novels, and gacha.

Game: Bang Dream! Girls Band Party!

    Developer: Bushiroad International

    Price: Free

In-App Purchases: Yes. Roll for gacha.

    Device used: iPhone XS Max

    The Review

Enjoy rhythm games on occasion? Passingly curious about visual novels? Maybe you just really enjoy cute and wholesome anime—whatever your level of interest, BanG Dream! Girls Band Party! can capture the attention of all but the most hardened players. For the rest; heartwarming stories, pleasant music, and an enjoyable rhythm game are all quite convincing.

GBP is, first and foremost, a rhythm game. As such, players will tap, hold, and flick to the beat as they play through some 80-odd songs at four different difficulties. The end goal? A full combo and the highest possible score at the most challenging difficulty, of course! Attaining this goal is far more difficult than it might seem at first blush, though: Although the basic mechanics of tapping and holding are constant from Easy to Expert, a new mechanic is introduced on Hard: Flicks. Flick notes require, as the name implies, players to "flick" in a direction to land them. Although the concept is simple, they tend to require more time to activate which, when combined with the increased complexity and note density of a higher difficulty, proves to be a significant difficulty boost. However, there is a somewhat mitigating factor that isn't mentioned anywhere: Flick notes do not have to be activated exclusively with upward flicks. Despite the bouncing chevrons implying otherwise, flicks in any direction are counted—not only upward flicks. This is incredibly convenient in some more difficult tracks when there are several flick notes and tap notes in succession, which players can easily (or, well, more easily) land by flicking towards the next note in the sequence.

Unfortunately for players who are interested in perfecting their skill, however, scores are tied directly to the gacha system. Band member skills, which primarily provide score bonuses, are limited by rarity. For example, a four-star Imai Lisa may boost perfect note scores by 115% for seven seconds whereas the one-star (the starter) Imai Lisa only offers a 10% boost to everything for seven seconds. This means that trying to push for the highest possible rank for a song, SS, players must engage with the gacha system. Additionally, Girls Band Party! uses an energy system, called Live Boosts, which increase the rewards earned from finishing a song by five (using one at a time), six (using two at a time), or seven (using three at a time). Live Boosts are recovered at a rate of one per half hour up to a maximum of ten, although players can go over the cap a few ways, the most notable of which is by increasing their account level (which restores three Live Boosts under level 51 and 10 thereafter). It is important to note, however, that running out of Live Boosts does not mean players are done until they have more. They do not—Live Boosts are not a stamina system in that they do not limit play, they only increase rewards.

There's a little more to the game than just a neat rhythm loop, though: Players who couldn't care less about chasing a high score will be happy to note that there is quite a developed story, the entirety of which is unlocked by simply playing the game. In addition to the main story, which is tied to player level, all five bands have their own stories, which explore (with the exception of Poppin'Party) their formation. Band stories are made available by viewing conversations around the map, levelling band members, and playing the bands' songs. As for those unfortunate souls who are less interested in the story, that's fine—it is almost entirely optional. I say "almost entirely" because some map areas and songs are locked behind the main story, and the band stories tend to have interesting rewards locked away as well.

Would I recommend this game to a friend? Certainly! As long as I thought that friend was interested in anime, rhythm games, or could be persuaded to give it a shot. Is it for everyone? Definitely not—the combination of gacha, anime, visual novel, and music game is far too niche to find a broad appeal. For those who know they enjoy anime, however; and for those connoisseurs of musical games who are not turned away by anime, it is certainly a welcome mix of fun, wholesome, and cute.

    Conclusion

That's it for this week folks! I don't think I have reviewed an anime game yet, so please let me know if this is territory better left untrod, or very welcome. As always, feedback is welcomed warmly but definitely not required.

If you would like to reach out to me, you can find me on the Trinity Force Network Discord server, or in the r/iOSGaming server @Syger#2331. Alternatively, you can send me a message on Reddit or, if you're reading on Reddit, by leaving a comment below.

Looking for an alternative to talking Tom

    Posted: 13 Jan 2019 12:08 PM PST

My son loves the talking Tom app on the iPad but it is so overloaded with adverts it's practically unplayable. They don't sell a version without ads so I'd like to find an alternative but all the apps I've found which are similar are free with in app purchases.

Does anyone know of a virtual pet app I can just buy which has no ads and no in app purchases?
