Just plugged my iPhone into my MacBook and it killed my MacBook Posted: 15 Jan 2019 07:31 PM PST I've just plugged my iPhone in using the cord that came with my phone to charge my MacBook (a1278) and it's just killed my MacBook. Like no lights, nothing, the battery lights aren't on, it's fully charged, the power cord light isn't on and it's plugged in. If I'm forced to buy a new laptop that's it for me and apple. Any email sent from OS X Mojave Mail permanently corrupts mailboxes in OS X Sierra Mail Posted: 15 Jan 2019 11:30 AM PST EDIT: Solved. I was barking up the wrong tree. Had nothing to do with Mojoave vs. Sierra. I use Mail in "Classic" view, and must have accidentally tapped command-L, turning on filtering -- which was hiding all read messages from me. My debugging process sucked and I confused myself. Also, WTF with Mail letting you turn "filters" on and off in classic mode, when there's no way to actually see or set those filters when in that mode? My computer: Mid-2012 MBP running Sierra 10.12.6 Regarding: OS X Mail 10.3 (3273) Recently noticed this alarming behavior: 1) Someone sends me an email using their Mojave Mail app 2) I move that mail into a Mailbox "On my Mac" 3) Result: receiving mailbox is corrupted. Probably shows no messages at all (all previous messages disappear.) Rebuilding mailbox doesn't help. If I search for the message, I can still find it, but it won't actually appear in the mailbox. If I add other non-mojave messages to the same mailbox, maybe one of them will show, but subsequent ones will remain hidden. 4) Use search results to move the message back to the inbox. 5) Result: search says it's there, but now the inbox doesn't show this ghostly message either. I believe that sometimes Mojave-sent messages just disappear from the inbox after a while, even without being sent to a different Mailbox. It's alarming how deeply corrupted the Mailbox becomes after receiving a Mojave mail. For example: 1) Move mojave-sent mail to new mailbox 2) Also move some newsletters or whatever to the mailbox 3) Result: mailbox appears empty, or maybe just shows a single newsletter 4) Use search results to delete the offending mojave mail altogether 5) Rebuild mailbox 6) Result: mailbox still appears empty. No way to get those newsletters to display. AFAIK, this only happens with mail sent to me from Mojave. I've confirmed this problem doing tests with 3 different friends and clients who use Mojave. Does this ring a bell for anyone? I'm totally freaking out since I do all my business through email, and I can't afford to have Mojave-sent emails disappearing and corrupting my mailboxes. Thanks! GF's iPhone froze while updating iTunes. Apple says she needs new computer Posted: 15 Jan 2019 08:03 PM PST So my girlfriend was updating iTunes on her iPhone when her phone froze. After calling apple, they said that her Macbook was too old to install the new iTunes update, and the phone won't work until it's updated. They then told her she'd need to buy a new laptop for her phone to work. Are there any solutions here other than getting a new laptop? Is apple scaming her? [link] [comments] |
Connecting USB to Thunderbolt 2 Posted: 15 Jan 2019 10:08 PM PST Hi, I own a pretty old mac (around 5 years old) and it's gotten slower so I've stopped using it for a while. The mac is a late 2013 model that has a 21.5-inch display. I really don't know anything about technology, but if this helps: "Processor: 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5. Memory: 8GB 1600 Mhz DDR3. Graphics: Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB". About a year ago I bought a pc laptop that I used for video games and school work, but I felt guilty for owning a fantastic device and ignoring it while it sat next to my laptop. I was wondering if I could connect my pc to the display of my mac, as the mac's display is great (not sure about the resolution and stuff but better than my pc). My mac has a Thunderbolt 2.0 opening (the thicker one not 3.0 which is like USB-C I'm pretty sure), and my pc has an HDMI opening. I'm not so sure about connecting the two, but if I were to purchase a cable that connects HDMI to Thunderbolt 2.0, would I be able to have two displays for my pc. Or would I only have one display that would be on the mac, which is fine as well. Any recommendations for the cable I should buy? Thanks so much for reading :) [link] [comments] |
MacBook Air won't charge and won't turn on Posted: 15 Jan 2019 08:30 AM PST A couple of months back, my headphone jack stopped working but I reinstalled the OS and that fixed the issue. It was fine a few months. But it suddenly died. It neither charges nor turns on. Went to Apple Care and they said that I have to replace my logic board. I came home and plugged in my MacBook Air and it charged! But was very slow. Activity Monitor showed get high CPU usage. I ran Apple Hardware Test and it showed that there is some issue with fan. After that, the MacBook Air was working fine for a day or two but then again stopped working. What could be the issue? [link] [comments] |

Getting windows to open on the current monitor Posted: 15 Jan 2019 07:51 PM PST When using multiple monitors with mirror displays off, is there a way to keep applications and other popups opening in the current window rather than whatever is set as the main window in system preferences? For instance, I'll open a spotlight prompt on my monitor while connected to my laptop, open a file, and it will pop up on my laptop screen. Do I have to really drag everything over that I want open on the second monitor? I must be doing something wrong here! [link] [comments] |
Why is the physical dual sim iPhone only sold in China Posted: 15 Jan 2019 03:46 PM PST From everything it seems that the Chinese version is the better version of the phone since it can you any carrier either an actual Carrier with towers or an MVNO that uses another carrier which the dual sim (esim) version elsewhere can not. Is this done for customers, Apple or to help the major carriers in countries where the esim version is sold to limit usage by minor MVNO's around the world. For example in the US you can go to CVS, Walgreen, 7-Eleven, Wawa, Target, Walmart and pickup the simcard from any of the hundreds of MVNO's and set it up and use it. But that can not be done with e-sims so that seems like you are limiting the use of the second sim by the choice of it being esim vs a physical sim but they have a version of the phone that has a physical slot but only in 1 country. It appears that this is limiting a users choice. Yes you could use it as the physical sim but other major carriers limit the plans allowed with the e-sim, seems like collusion [link] [comments] |
Performed a macOS erase and install, but my issue came back Posted: 15 Jan 2019 06:45 PM PST A few weeks ago, my Safari on macOS started doing this weird thing where it would revert back to old browsing data. That is, I'd be using Safari normally, and all of the sudden it would log me out of the websites I was using and pretend like the last few days never existed. I did some troubleshooting, and basically erased every setting I could find to try to reset Safari. I deleted browsing data in Safari. Then I went to ~/Library/Safari and trashed all databases and recent sites and everything else, including plist files. I also uninstalled all Safari extensions in case something was causing a conflict. So I opened Safari with a pristine session. No history, no webpage data or cookies. I logged into Gmail and Amazon. So I knew those sessions should persist. Less than an hour later, I was logged out of both and it was prompting me to perform 2FA again. I immediately went to Safari Preferences --> Manage Website Data, and there was local storage and cookies for websites I had last visited weeks ago. How was this being restored?! Fed up, I decided to go the nuclear route and boot into the recovery partition, erase my SSD, and reinstall macOS. I did not restore from a Time Machine backup, for fear for restoring the corruption or bug. Less than 30 minutes later, same. exact. issue. Turns out this bug can survive a nuclear blast. Not only did it log me out of the websites I had just logged into, but Safari history and cookies came back. I see items from as far back as December. Where is this being fetched from? My only guess is that it's iCloud related, because I did sign in with my iCloud account. Would syncing "Safari" items in iCloud sync history, cookies, and local storage? My understanding was that it was only cookies and active tabs. Maybe iCloud Keychain? When I open Keychain Access on macOS, I see some Safari items related to "Safari Session State Key". Maybe I need to reset my Keychain? Any other insight or ideas? [link] [comments] |

MacBook Pro 15” Retina Mid 2015 Posted: 15 Jan 2019 11:09 AM PST I have been using the above MacBook since brand new and recently I have noticed the bottom of the casing has convexed out to a point where the unit will now rotate on its own axis when resting on a 'level' surface. The MacBook has only ever been used as a workhorse and still is to this day which consists of emailing, spreadsheeting, word processing and photoshopping. The quad core with 16gb RAM should handle the stated tasks with minimal effort, the most processor intensive app is undoubtedly photoshop, even so, this should be a breeze with such system spec. When I first noticed this abnormality, I just dismissed it thinking that this was due to an uneven surface which the MacBook was placed on. However, even with the unit placed on guaranteed level surfaces such as a glass table, or a marble work top and an engineers granite surface plate the issue is still very evident. It is clear that the bottom of the machine casing has, for whatever reason, 'convexed' out which is elevating the MacBook's 4 corner pads off the surface it is resting on leaving the unit to rotate on its central portion of the underside. I have never noticed the running temperature of the MacBook to feel abnormally high at any point, so I do not think it is due to excessive heat that has resulted in this deformation. Unless the temperature has been periodically spiking to abnormally high levels between check points in which case these occurrences would go unnoticed. Are there anybody else experiencing this issue with their MacBooks? [link] [comments] |
Where/what is the lid close sensor on a Macbook Pro 2012 13" (Unibody) Posted: 15 Jan 2019 02:43 PM PST I have been having issues with my Macbook Pro sleeping, and i'm wondering where exactly the sleep sensor is located. I have tried multiple magnets across the entire computer, recovery mode, Apple extended diagnostics, etc, and it still does not sleep. I believe this to be a hardware issue, but I can't find exact information. From what I have seen, the sleep sensor is in the hard drive cable/IR sensor unit, am I correct on this? [link] [comments] |

Keyboard command to switch between “In Library” and “All Apple Music” in iTunes Search ? Posted: 15 Jan 2019 02:33 PM PST https://imgur.com/lklfSCs (it's in German, but you know the layout, left is the library tab, right the Apple Music tab) Is there a keyboard shortcut or hotkey to switch between the "In Library" tab and "All Apple Music" tab when searching in iTunes? When I'm looking for a specific song and press cmd + f to activate the search field, but it searches in the wrong section, and I have to drag my curser up there and to switch... it's /r/mildlyinfuriating. Thanks for any help! [link] [comments] |
iPhone 7 passcode does not work after update? Posted: 15 Jan 2019 02:31 PM PST Hi, My mom decided to update her iphone 7, by herself, after months of the update screen popping up. At the end of of the Welcome Screen shes not sure whether she set up a passcode or if there was one already from when we set up her phone but long story short the phone requires a passcode now and shes not sure what it could be. We already went through the 10 passcode tries and dont want to lock the phone permanently. We know the icloud password and we have a backup of the phone from 2016. Is there anyway to recover the phone without losing pictures from the past 2 years? Do you think the genius bar would be any type of support? Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
MacBook Air Keeps Going to Sleep? Posted: 15 Jan 2019 02:30 PM PST Specs: MacBook Air (13 inch, early 2014), running macOS High Sierra version 10.13.4, 1.4 GHz Intel Core i5 processor, storage: 15.71 GB available of 121.12 GB. I first noticed a problem about a month ago when my Mac turned off suddenly and wouldn't turn back on, even after nearly an hour on the charger. I left it open but it was still off. Later that night, it miraculously turned back on without me doing anything to it. It went through the regular startup sequence with the loading bar thing and all that. For the last 2 days or so, my Mac has suddenly been almost turning off while I'm using it. I say almost because it doesn't completely boot down. Maybe it's sleeping, idk. The screen goes black and if I have any audio playing, that turns off too for the time it's down. Once I click the trackpad, everything (including music) starts again and the screen lights up on the password/locked screen. It's happened to me 4 times in the last 2 hours. When it comes back, the programs are all running like normal on the screens I left them on. I haven't been able to identify any trigger besides it happening while the screen is on. It seems like the problem happens more when the battery is below 20% (but that might just be because I'm bad about remembering to charge, so the Mac is very often below 20% lol). Also, it's a fairly new battery (236 cycles). What should I do/how do I fix this? Is it a sign of some bigger problem with my Mac? Also please let me know if you need any more info/specs because I wasn't sure what to include. [link] [comments] |

Trying to connect 2015 MBP to three external monitors Posted: 15 Jan 2019 01:10 PM PST Hello to all of you awesome, helpful people! I have a 15" MacBook Pro 2015 Retina display that I am attempting to hook up to 3 external displays. The monitors are as follows (letters are just to identify them going forward) (A) Samsung 30-something inch (36"?) smart TV- this is the best, first, and most important of my displays. Mounted on the wall, I am running to it with the HDMI out of the computer. (B) Dell 2007WFP- this monitor accepts VGA, and DVI-D inputs, as well as composite?(yellow RCA) but bleep composite. (C) HP LA2006- this monitor is nearly identical in size and has the same inputs, except no composite. To send signal to these, I have the following cables/boxes (numbers are just to identify them going forward, NOT QUANTITY): (1) Thunderbolt 2 to VGA (male, plugs into monitor directly) (2) Thunderbolt 2 to DVI-D (male, plugs into monitor directly) (3) "Active" Thunderbolt 2 to DVI-D (end is female, connects to standard DVI-D cable, and then to monitor) (4) VGA splitter (1 "in" from computer, 2 "out" to displays) Here's what else is plugged into the computer, if it matters: MagSafe charger USB to Dell monitor (B) (acts as a hub for keyboard and mouse) Powered USB hub to other things like external camera and audio interface. At first, I tried simply hooking up (A) with HDMI, and running (B) and (C) using cables (1) and (2). This leaves whichever display I last plugged in blank and unresponsive. Even in the display settings, my computer doesn't know that it's there. After some research, I found numerous YouTube videos showing that three displays is possible if you use an ACTIVE display port adapter. I don't know what this means, but I bought cable (3) to try it. Same problem. All the cables work, and each display works on it's own, or with any one other, but not all three displays together. The Splitter (4) does indeed work, but since the computer can't tell what the native resolution is, I get either square displays on monitors (B) and (C) or it becomes stretched and distorted. I'd really like to have all three be working separately, instead of having any of them be mirrored (unless I tell them to be myself through settings), so this isn't a good solution anyway. What does ACTIVE mean in this context? To me that usually means powered, but (3) doesn't have an external power supply. What am I doing wrong? Why won't my computer, which can read all of these displays separately, see them all simultaneously? I know it can do three displays, as I've seen YouTube videos of f computers both older and newer than mine do this successfully, and mine will do three displays if I use the built in retina (which I don't want to do). Is it possible to select items to delete and delete them by pressing the delete key like in Windows? Posted: 15 Jan 2019 08:41 AM PST Basically the title, at work I've started using an iMac and I've tried to select multiple items and then pressing the delete key to put them in the trash but nothing happens. From that, it seems like I'm only allowed to drag and drop into trash or right click and move to trash. Now that's not a problem, but if I'm not able to use the delete key for that, is it possible to map it? change a setting that will allow me to do it? [link] [comments] |
Need assistance getting through the activation lock. Posted: 15 Jan 2019 12:38 AM PST I have an old, but still fully functional, iPad mini 2 that I haven't used in some time. After remembering about its existence, I attempted to get back on it. I remembered the number pad password just fine, but the activation lock is a way more complicated and different story. When I was using the iPad (I was young, didn't have a phone number or stuff like that) I was CERTAIN that the the apple id was my mothers old optusnet email. After trying that, it didn't work, which left me confused. To add to my confusion, after trying to find the apple id using basic information and the email, I was told that there wasn't an apple id that existed with that email. But to make things worse, the iPad displays a hidden icloud address next to the activation lock information. I am unsure if this the apple id or not, but I did recognize what the email was, or at least what it should be. That didn't work either, so I attempted to reset my password on that icloud address, but low and behold, there is a phone number that I need to enter to confirm the change, and I have zero idea what it is. It could be one of my mothers old numbers, but it ends with 52 and I have no recollection of any of my mum's phone numbers ending in 52. So now I'm out of ideas. If anyone has even the slightest idea how to fix this or get around it, please inform me, I will be forever in your debt. [link] [comments] |
Repair Cost Question: Coffee Ruins Speakers. I am a lucky idiot. Posted: 15 Jan 2019 11:43 AM PST I am an idiot. I spilled about half a small mug, 5oz spilled, on my MacBook Air. It shut down on its own and wouldn't turn back on. Later in the day, it turned on by itself and seemed mostly okay. It works just fine, charges, keyboard is fine, no external damage, screen is fine, all USB ports work, and I can connect the HDMI adapter and connect to my TV. Everything but the speakers. No sound will come out. I can use bluetooth earbuds. I don't have any 3.5mm jack earbuds/headphones to check the headphone jack. I am trying to get a good estimate on repair cost before I make an over an hour long drive to the Apple Store. TLDR: Spilled coffee on my MacBook Air. Everything works, but the speakers. Looking for repair estimate. [link] [comments] |
