Tim Cook teases 'new services' coming in 2019, says Apple's 'greatest contribution to mankind' will be health-related

Little known tip: if you’re connecting to a public WiFi network with a login page on iOS, but the login page is not appearing automatically, go to captive.apple.com to force it to show up.

This also works with basically any unsecured HTTP website, but captive.apple.com is easy enough to remember.

PSA: Take pictures of your your iPhone's screws before going in for repairs to avoid being absolutely shafted.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2019 11:11 PM PST

Been an avid apple fanboy from the 3GS days, today I have had probably the worst tech experience in my entire adult life.

Backstory here, my iPhone X started presenting green lines on the screen, over the last couple months it got progressively worse, working in retail Christmas is a hectic time of the year, so I put the repair on hold until I had an opportunity to get it looked at.

Today was the day, I finally had my first day off in a few weeks, decided to go get my iPhone looked at. Upon presenting my iPhone for repairs, I was told that yes it's hardware and yes I will not have to pay anything (unless it's got water damage or third party parts inside.) Cool, book it in, get told to wait a couple hours.

Come back a couple hours later, get notified that literally zero repairs have been made because the bottom right screw had been stripped (apparently not by them) and that my warranty is now voided and service is refuse. Not only that, I get told that the only way to fix my screen is with a COMPLETELY new device, and I get told to contact my home and contents insurance and pay excess there.

    • 1) I have not, and have never taken any of my apple products for third party repairs.

    • 2) It's still within warranty period, so why would I even attempt to have it repaired (which would cost money) from an unauthorised repairer.

Super salty after this whole experience, you hear a lot about these issues (ie, snazzy labs) and how people dislike the whole apple repair policy, yet you never think it'll happen to you.

Word of advice, document the state of your product before taking it in for apple repairs, as they can just as easily shaft you and say "So sorry, good luck, have a nice day".

TL;DR Screw stripped by unknown party, can't repair screen that's covered under warranty, a completely new handset will be needed and no fixes are capable. Document your apple products people before taking them in for repairs, you can and will get shafted.

Apple no longer starts with "Why"

    Posted: 08 Jan 2019 05:03 PM PST

In his 2009 book, "Start with Why," Simon Sinek frequently cites Apple as a company that succeeds because it clearly conveys its vision. Reading this book today has helped me put into words my increasing frustration with the company:

    We know what Apple believes.

Apple was built for those who wish to upset the status quo (the crazy ones, if you will). Apple stands for creativity, innovation, rethinking established models, diversity, simplicity, and environmental responsibility. Jobs wasn't perfect, but he knew how to inspire others with his clarity of vision. We knew *why* Jobs built Apple, and consequently, we knew why Apple did what it did.

Apple has had an almost prescient view of the future, and has shaped many industries because of their clear sense of purpose. We can't disregard their many missteps along the way, but their goals have typically turned out to be the historically "correct" ones (GUIs, digital music sales, killing Flash/floppy/CDs/etc, modern smartphones, cloud syncing, etc).

Their vision was based on their guiding "Why," and as a result, their loyal fans (like me) would defend any questionable decision Apple made because we trusted that their eyes were fixated on a clear vision of the future.

I've gradually lost trust in that vision because Apple no longer starts with Why.

The best way to see this shift is to compare the reveals of the original iPhone and iPad with the reveal of the Apple Watch.

The iPhone & iPad announcements start with an explanation for why they need to exist. The Apple Watch announcement is a wordless video of a gadget drifting in a void. Tim doesn't even follow it up to explain what problems it solves, just why they decided not to shrink the iPhone interface.

Watching it again 4 years later, you can see how many of the Watch decisions missed the mark. But I happily enjoyed my first Apple Watch, content with its foibles because I trusted that they had a grand plan for it, but in the time since, it has undergone only iterative improvement, and the Watch App Store is a barren ghost town.

This is a trend. Apple has made a habit of building platforms without explaining why we need them, relying instead on 3rd-party developers to produce the "killer apps" for each. Apple TV App Store, Touch Bar, Apple Watch, Mac App Store, iPad Smart Connector, and iMessage Apps have languished because Apple forgot to start with Why.

Despite courageously removing the headphone jack, their recent innovations seem almost tentative. The Touch Bar was an incredible idea that inexplicably hasn't received an update since it was revealed. They were clearly surprised by the backlash, but instead of doubling down and reestablishing its reason for existence (the customizable, workflow-enhancing tool it should've been), they're ignoring it and letting it flounder. They may be redesigning it behind the scenes, but until then the Touch Bar joins the 2013 Mac Pro and the rest of the list above as products without clear sense of a forward-looking Why. Similarly, the new MBA appears to have been a knee-jerk reaction to the fact that the old MBA still sells so well — they were clearly positioning the MB (and non-tMBP) to replace it, but instead of sticking to that vision, they brought back the Air moniker and further muddled the lineup.

This makes me doubt that Apple will nail their inevitable AR glasses, which are poised to make an iPhone-caliber disruption in personal computing.

I admire Tim's leadership and think he's done some amazing things for the company, but Apple needs a Crazy One in his seat or close to it.

tl;dr: Title. I'm losing faith in Apple because they either have a muddled vision for the future, or have done a poor job of conveying it.

Important to note: Only Samsung TVs will get the iTunes Movies and TV app; all the other TV brands are only adding AirPlay 2, HomeKit, and other iOS tech

    Posted: 08 Jan 2019 12:09 PM PST

It seems like a lot of people on the subreddit are confused about this and asking about "why is the Apple TV needed anymore?".

You'll either need an AirPlay capable device or Apple TV to use the streaming service if you don't have Samsung TV so that's pretty useful in my opinion.

Apple TV is still a great product that will have a long life. I really don't think any of these announcements make the Apple TV redundant or useless.

Bad experience at Apple store. Anti reflective coating.

    Posted: 09 Jan 2019 12:54 AM PST

So I chatted with a Apple advisor about the anti reflective coating wearing off on my 2014 13inch MacBook pro. He asked for pictures and I sent to him, and I mention the recall and he agrees and we both make a appointment for the apple store to swap screens.

Appointment day, I show up (I had to to make time for this, and sacrificed important things). Lady at the Apple store tells me I can't because the you can only claim it after 3 years of purchase date. I'm now confused as hell, because the chat person did not mention this and was told I was good to go. So in the Apple store I go into the chat again and tell them the situation and what I was told. Waiting 45mins being transferred from one advisor to another and another, She tells me its 4 years from purchase date. I tell her I had the appointment ready to go in 2018 (December 27) but things came up I had to reschedule. She mentions that it has to exactly 4 years from purchase date. Know I'm even more confused, lady at Apple store tells me 3 your telling 4 and the first advisor told me it's not a problem. Im so disappointed I made time , took the train, waited and only to be told nope. Like wtf, sorry for my language.

Im hugely disappointed. I also looked at some articles about the recall and no where does it mention (3 or 4 years from purchase date.)

Does anyone have experience or knowledge about this issue?

Apple could've made a huge update to Activation Lock with the introduction of eSIM

    Posted: 08 Jan 2019 10:40 AM PST

I'm considering upgrading from the iPhone X to the XS Max (via Jump on Demand so I can get on the 2019 iPhone), and I was researching more about eSIM. I wanted to have both T-Mobile, and an AT&T MVNO to cover me at all times.

On my research, I found out that eSIM survives a restore. Just as if you restore with your actual SIM card inside the phone. This would be a perfect way to locate your device even if a thief DFU restored it with iTunes. However, you can't locate it when the phone is on the setup screen. Which is weird, considering that Activation Lock sends you an email when your Apple ID credentials are being requested by the device.

So if the phone was able to trigger an email notification, why doesn't Apple allow me to track it even on this mode?

Why does Chrome on my iPhone only save a handful of passwords instead of all of them?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2019 06:48 PM PST

My google account syncs with my chrome passwords for like 100+ sites, but when I sync my google account with my chrome on my iPhone, it is a bit random in which sites have saved passwords.

For example, some websites automatically have the password filled in the boxes, then some websites make me manually type out the password, even though I know for a fact I've hit the "save password/info" button on both iPhone and my computer.

How I Saved My Apparently Failing Mid-2010 MacBook Pro

    Posted: 08 Jan 2019 08:22 PM PST

TL;DR: I tore apart my MBP, cleaned it all out, and may have fixed two long-standing problems I've had. Pictures of some of the process are here: https://imgur.com/gallery/1imDjVz?s=sms

I bought my MBP in the tail end of 2010, and it served me faithfully for several years with zero issues, and this despite it not getting taken care of as well as I would've liked. To wit, I most often use my MBP while sitting at the couch with it resting on the arm of the couch, but for a year or so, I had a couch with arms slanted just enough that the computer fell and slammed down on the floor numerous times.

Still, it wouldn't develop any issues until within the past couple of years. The first issue was that the computer would sporadically and spontaneously restart "because of a problem," which my limited MBP troubleshooting led me to believe that it was an issue with the graphics switcher, which I learned was a known problem with my model of MBP that had a repair program and everything... which had conveniently ended right as I was figuring out my problem.

Eventually, I learned of GfxCardStatus and would keep my computer set to "integrated only," which at least mitigated the crashing.

The second and more recent problem was that every few moments, just about everything on screen would freeze for five to ten seconds. I could move the mouse cursor, but I couldn't interact with anything, nor would video or animation play. After the few seconds were up, everything would catch up again -- if I clicked something while it was frozen, the results of the click would show up afterward. If I typed, everything I typed would be there and so on. I had no idea what was causing that issue, but I did notice that whenever it was frozen, the HDD would make the same sounds like it was trying to read something. Identical, every time.

So anyway, I decided to tear apart my MBP yesterday. My only goal here was to replace the thermal paste on the processor, which I had recently done to my aging PS3 and thought that I should do the same for my computer too. (I used Arctic MX-4, which is a good 8 year+, non-curing paste.)

Being a bit overzealous, I removed more from the innards of the system than I needed to, such as the disk drive and the Airport card. I also decided in the middle of it that I would replace my hard drive (a 500GB 5200RPM drive that was original to the system) with the one I pulled out of my PS3 (a 1TB 5200RPM drive) a week ago.

Doing the teardown, I noticed a few bits of broken plastic here and there -- no doubt from when it was dropped so many times ages ago -- and also that the fans and heat sinks were extremely dusty. I'm impressed that the system turned on at all without suffering a heat death!

Replacing the thermal paste was a simple process once I made it down to that part of the system, with three tiny dollops being all that was needed to ensure even coverage on the graphics card and CPU.

While putting it all back together, I broke a tiny little peg on the Airport card and started panicking that I wouldn't have WiFi. So in the absence of any way to actually repair this bit to hold the wire in place, I ... used school glue and scotch tape to hold it in place as best as possible. Brilliant, I know.

I also went ahead and replaced the hard drive (I had made a Time Machine backup prior to opening my computer).

Getting everything sealed back up again, I pressed the power button and was greeted with the flashing "?" on a folder icon. Of course! I had forgotten to boot into recovery (hold Command-R after the start-up chime).

Three and a half hours later, everything was working! That Internet recovery took forever but at least confirmed that I still had WiFi, and restoring from my Time Machine was a painfully slow process. I envy you USB 3 and SDD users!

I went through and tested as much as I could once everything was up and running again, and I noticed that I may not have hooked the optical drive up correctly (or at all?) as the computer wasn't seeing it. No big loss; I rarely used it. The Thunderbolt port also isn't registering as existing in the system profile, so it may be dead; oh well, I've never used it.

BUT the computer no longer freezes every few moments! And so far, I've not experienced any crashes (even without GfxCardStatus), which before were a regular experience. I guess my problems were being caused by a failing HDD and an overheating graphics card?

As much as I want to replace this computer with something that isn't quite as ancient, it still works incredibly well for what I need it to -- managing my photos, occasional video editing, web design, and lite gaming -- so I hope I extended its life by another few years.

It's just too bad that macOS is no longer officially supporting the thing anymore.

I don't think Apple get's enough appreciation for their input devices, especially the trackpads.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2019 09:02 AM PST

Currently using the Magic Trackpad 2 on my Linux computer and man, it's really nice to be able to use gestures and be able to click on the whole surface of the trackpad.

Even with less than optimal drivers it's way better than what most laptops use and comparable to a good mouse/ keyboard combo.

The haptic feedback is really nice aswell, and that goes for the iPhones Taptic engines aswell.

I've had every gen iPhone up to 2017. There's only one reason I would consider switching to Android.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2019 11:54 PM PST

I currently have the iPhone X and I believe it is still one of the best phones on the market. This is probably the first iPhone that I would say is equal to or superior to the Android competition in every way. I think the hardware will age well.

The absolute worst thing about iPhone is the quality of search in iOS. iMessage search is a joke compared to WhatsApp. Spotlight search for information or local data is nearly as bad.

I thought iMessage in the Cloud would improve search, but it hasn't. Are they even trying to improve search?

ATV as a part of Homekit automations

    Posted: 08 Jan 2019 08:03 PM PST

So as new smart TVs are getting Homekit compatibility this year, one can expect them to be a part of different Homekit automations. For example if the TV is turned on, turn on bias lights. But the question is if this ability will be enabled on Apple's own streaming box. It's already shown as an accessory in Home app but it isn't Homekit device per se, as August locks or Philips Hue lights are, for example. Any thoughts?
