Apple knows the age of yearly iPhone upgrades is over

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 01:15 PM PST

Over the past year, Apple has increased prices of its devices by 10-60% but still has the exact same profit margin (38-39% range). So where is this money going? Can Apple survive healthily if they lower the prices back to the usual?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 10:53 AM PST

Let's have a discussion whether Apple's jump in prices is justified. Considering the static profit margins, it seems Apple isn't really guilty of anything but maintaining the status quo in terms of margins. However, I am interested in understanding where is this extra money going?

Are devices using far more sophisticated (and thus costlier) components? In the case of the iPhone it is apparently the OLED screens, cameras and face sensors, that are pretty costly. With the MacBook Air, there was hardly any dramatic change which Apple isn't already buying in large volumes. The new iPad Pros pack a lot of power and technology, but the higher models are insanely priced for what they offer.

So where is the extra money going? The campus cost a lot. More datacenter investments? Legal expenses? Paying Irish taxes? Buying AR/VR startups? For unannounced projects? Money lost in failed projects?

An Open Letter to iPhone Owners from Steve Jobs (Sept 6, 2007)

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 05:35 AM PST

Posting this for discussion, since Apple's current situation may be reminiscent of one not so long ago..

    To all iPhone customers:

I have received hundreds of emails from iPhone customers who are upset about Apple dropping the price of iPhone by $200 two months after it went on sale. After reading every one of these emails, I have some observations and conclusions.

First, I am sure that we are making the correct decision to lower the price of the 8GB iPhone from $599 to $399, and that now is the right time to do it. iPhone is a breakthrough product, and we have the chance to 'go for it' this holiday season. iPhone is so far ahead of the competition, and now it will be affordable by even more customers. It benefits both Apple and every iPhone user to get as many new customers as possible in the iPhone 'tent'. We strongly believe the $399 price will help us do just that this holiday season.

Second, being in technology for 30+ years I can attest to the fact that the technology road is bumpy. There is always change and improvement, and there is always someone who bought a product before a particular cutoff date and misses the new price or the new operating system or the new whatever. This is life in the technology lane. If you always wait for the next price cut or to buy the new improved model, you'll never buy any technology product because there is always something better and less expensive on the horizon. The good news is that if you buy products from companies that support them well, like Apple tries to do, you will receive years of useful and satisfying service from them even as newer models are introduced.

Third, even though we are making the right decision to lower the price of iPhone, and even though the technology road is bumpy, we need to do a better job taking care of our early iPhone customers as we aggressively go after new ones with a lower price. Our early customers trusted us, and we must live up to that trust with our actions in moments like these.

Therefore, we have decided to offer every iPhone customer who purchased an iPhone from either Apple or AT&T, and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration, a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store. Details are still being worked out and will be posted on Apple's website next week. Stay tuned.

We want to do the right thing for our valued iPhone customers. We apologize for disappointing some of you, and we are doing our best to live up to your high expectations of Apple.

Mmac advice for a windows guy

    Posted: 04 Jan 2019 01:10 AM PST

Hello everyone, my girlfriend is looking to buy a new MacBook and asked me for advice, but I'm a windows guy, so I wanted a more expert opinion. She has a very light usage: internet surfing, file managing and windows office kinda deal, and would like to use it for as many years as possible

Her budget is MacBook air with i7 and 256gb storage, MBP 2017 with one upgrade (either CPU or storage) and maybe MBP 2018 without upgrades

Which of these would you recommend?

Here are some POSITIVE things to take away from Apple's expected quarterly earnings report.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 04:09 PM PST

People are practically falling over themselves today posting the usual January "Apple is doomed" clickbait. You can't spend five minutes here without Reddit's armchair CEOs and supply chain experts babbling about how there's "no innovation" or that the iPhone prices are "too high." I can't help but laugh, considering there was actually a lot of positive news that's going undiscussed that was in Tim's recent letter. So let's go over some highlights and points of misinformation, shall we?

Over 100% of the YoY revenue decline was due to the economic downturn in Greater China.

China has been going through a tough economic season these past several months. Trade disputes between the US and China have slowed China's manufacturing to a crawl. Fixed asset investments and retail purchases have reached an all time low. China's smartphone market has also experienced a significant contraction as Chinese consumers aren't spending as much given the worrying economic situation. China's self reported GDP growth was also the second lowest in 25 years. Coupled with a strong dollar, it's no surprise Apple's forecasts in China is experiencing a slump. These macroeconomic factors aren't really within Apple's control, especially with Trump being as unpredictable as he is. Apple's only mistake was underestimating the effect of global macroeconomic factors could have on their Chinese markets.

I see many people blaming Apple's revised fiscal guidance solely on the high price of the new iPhones, but the data simply doesn't indicate this it all. What is responsible for the revised guidance is simply China. And we know this because...

Apple set REVENUE RECORDS in many other markets.

These markets include the United States, Canada, Mexico, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Poland, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Korea. Despite Apple's price hikes, Apple seems to be doing just peachy in most other markets aside from China. So I can't help but see most complaints regarding Apple's iPhone pricing as an explanation for their overall revenue decline as premature and lacking real data.

Installed base of active devices grew by more than 100 million units.

This demonstrates how Apple's brand tends to keep users within the ecosystem, rather than losing more of them to competitors. Year over year growth for Apple's services are largely dependent on increasing the overall active installed user base, so this bodes extremely well for Apple's services sector going forward.

Categories outside of iPhone saw an almost 19% YoY growth.

All together, Mac, iPad, services, wearables, and accessories combined led to big increase in YoY growth. Apple Watch is essentially still uncontested in the space, Apple Music is seeing healthy growth, and AirPods are flying off the shelves. Services especially saw a huge increase in growth, growing to a new quarterly record in every geographic segment. Services is on track to doubling it's size from 2016 to 2020. Wearables also saw a massive YoY growth, which saw an almost 50% jump.

Other large, non-Chinese phone manufacturers are seeing massive revenue declines year over year.

Samsung reported a 10% decline in revenue for their mobile branch. LG reports a 23% annual drop.

    _______________________________________________________________

Hopefully this will help a little bit in dispelling some of the hysteria on this subreddit. Apple is not doomed. Their pricing strategy seems to be working in most other markets, which have seen revenue records, and wearables + services are growing at record paces. Obviously, this isn't an excuse for Apple to rest on it's laurels or anything. Cheap midrangers have become "good enough" for a huge swath of people, and there isn't anything really an iPhone can do that a $200 dollar Chinese phone cannot. The many quality of life advantages purchasing an iPhone comes with may not be worth it to the next generation of smartphone buyers.

What is the maximum you would be willing to spend on a new iphone?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 06:02 AM PST

In your opinion, what price is reasonable for a new iphone? A lot of people have been complaining about apple's prices recently, and that got me thinking. What would you be willing to spend?
