iTunes 4K is almost just as good as 4K Blu-Ray: Comparison Posted: 18 Jan 2019 04:41 PM PST I recently got an Apple TV 4K and connected it to my new Sony A8F OLED TV. I wanted to be able to get the best out of this TV so I have wondered if iTunes 4K is good enough to buy over 4K Blu-Rays. I love the Harry Potter movies so even though I had them on 1080p Blu-Ray, I had a spare $100 iTunes Gift Card so I brought them in 4K. I was really interested in comparing it with the 4K Blu-Ray though. So I went and brought the first Harry Potter on 4K Blu-Ray when it was on sale. Then I ripped it and played the file on Infuse to ensure all of the settings for the TV were the exact same as it was on the same input. The results were really surprising. The iTunes version of Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone is amazing. It comes so close to the 4K Blu-Ray that I see no big reason to pay extra for the 4K Blu-Ray. The Blu-Ray does have a higher bitrate which means that film grain is better preserved and edges are slightly sharper which gives a slightly more cinematic result. Comparison:Image 1: In this scene we see the Dursley's house. The main part that is noticeable between the two versions is the sharpness on the wall. The places I have zoomed in on show this quite well. The 4K Blu-Ray also had nicer looking film grain if you look at the bottom left on the stairs. This is most likely because the iTunes version has been more heavily encoded with HEVC which often blurs out noise to create a lower file size and bitrate. Yes the 4K Blu-Ray is a nicer image overall but is it worth the extra hassle and price, no, IMO. Uncompressed Image 2: Sorry about the glare in this one. This is more of a low light scene so I thought this is where we would see the most difference but I was wrong. The Blu-Ray preserves more detail in the wood above his head but thats about all. I actually like the look of the iTunes one better near the bottom where I have zoomed in, it just seems like more detail is preserved. The Blu-Rays colours are more even though but its not that different and both are definatly better than SDR Blu-Rays. Uncompressed Image 3: Almost the same thing as the previous two. More film grain is preserved but otherwise the image is so similar that if you were enjoying the movie you wouldn't know the difference. Uncompressed Image 4: I decided to edit and add one last image. The reason for this is that I have been told that moving snow or other small objects could mess up compression. It is true but Apple still does a great job with there compression and there is no hugely noticeable artifacts compared to the 4K Blu-Ray. The snow that has fallen on the floor looses alot of detail and you see less snow as some gets blurred in the background. Uncompressed I know that this movie that I used in the comparison is real 4K not an upscale of 2K like Harry Potter 3 and onwards. It would be interesting to see a comparison of 2K upscales. I might add these on to this post later on. I will be retuning my copy of the 4K Blu-Ray now as I see no real need for it. Edit: Many people are asking how sound is different. This Blu-Ray specifically is DTS-HD MA 7.1 and also includes DTS:X inside that container. The iTunes version is Dolby Digital+ AFAIK. I don't have a dedicated sound system and use the Acoustic Surface tech built into my TV. Infuse decodes the DTS-HD MA and sends it to the Apple TV as uncompressed LPCM to output. After listening to a few scenes and the main opening theme, I did notice a difference between the two. The Blu-Ray had better dynamic range in sound and sounded slightly more cinematic. The DD+ version was still good but not AS good as the DTS-HD MA. Its not that much that I would pay extra for the 4K Blu-Ray though. If you have a dedicated sound system with really good speakers I would probably go for the Blu-Ray, otherwise, I would say go for iTunes. [link] [comments] |

Unofficial Apple Music web player my friends and I created Posted: 18 Jan 2019 07:41 AM PST |
Posted: 18 Jan 2019 06:36 AM PST My current PC (a ThinkPad T430) has been a loyal friend but is reaching its golden years. I've wanted to switch to Mac for a long time now and would like to finally make the jump. The trouble is, everything in my price range ($1000 to $1600) seems to fall short in some critical way. The MacBook is underpowered, the MacBook Pro has an awful keyboard, and the Air is just overpriced for the components. Even on the desktop side the current iMacs use outdated processors and the Mac Mini is terrible value (and requires a monitor). My question is whether anyone has a thought on old models or refurbished Macs that might be a good deal right now. I'm mostly looking for a machine to learn Unix on and take online courses, with some video watching (no gaming). I don't need much storage but would like an SSD to mach my current computer with at least 256 GB. It would be nice if it lasted for at least four years. Desktop or laptop is fine too! Thanks for all your help!! Sorry if some of my assumptions about current Macs are unreasonable, I'm just going off what I've read and heard on ATP. Please correct me if you see something wrong. *Update: * You all are amazing! This is such useful advice. Need to get back to work but will get online again soon. And I'll be keeping my ThinkPad just in case, we've been through a lot :). *Update update: * Alrighty, I couldn't focus on work so I took the plunge. I ended up getting the refurbished 2018 13" MacBook Pro suggested by WinterCharm (thank you!). This whole discussion was very helpful. I agree with many people that this may not be the ideal time to switch. But I think the overall opinions suggest that, while I should be careful with the keyboard, the stuck key issue may be less of a concern. I should have been more clear about my other reasons for switching to Mac. I really like the idea of syncing with my iPhone. There is also software like OmniFocus that just isn't available for PC. Lenovo and Dell are putting up a pretty decent ultrabook fight regardless. For sure I could dual boot one of them and have done that with my ThinkPad, but at this time in my life I really appreciate simplicity. Thank you all again! [link] [comments] |

Question about US border security searching my iPhone SE Posted: 18 Jan 2019 10:08 PM PST I gave them my password yesterday because my phone isn't backed up and they would have kept the phone if I didn't give the code to them. (I need contacts to call people after crossing through border) I'm so so so infuriated. Could they have put spyware my phone? What can I do besides changing all my passwords for everything? Edit: Is simply restoring it the best way to thoroughly disinfect it? Tips would be massively appreciated. Learned from comments so far: don't connect phone to computer. Info: They had the phone out of my sight for 5 minutes. Washington State USA to Canada interstate 5 by private car. [link] [comments] |

The one thing I want to see Apple introduce in iOS 13 for iPad Posted: 18 Jan 2019 02:24 PM PST I really Like how the iPad multitasks but I hate when I need to use the keyboard on one of the smaller multitasking windows. When typing it covers so much of the screen, I would love to get the ability to make the keyboard much smaller so I can easily type one handed while on the iPad. Mock of what I'm thinking about. Thoughts? [link] [comments] |

Full Time Retail Employees, a quick inquiry Posted: 19 Jan 2019 01:40 AM PST I'll just keep this short. I'm being recruited by an Apple recruiter for a full time Operations Expert Position in NYC. I should've asked this during the phone interviews, but it didn't cross my mind. At my current job (retail manager, big box) we rotate weekends. So out of the 4 weekends in a month, I'll work an open sat & sun, then be off next weekend, then close a sat&sun then be off the weekend after. I also usually have a preferred day off during the week, although that tends to change as time goes by. Usually they were pretty flexible with school and other things. Now, obviously Apple is different, and every company operates differently. Obviously weekends in retail are necessary, I just always appreciated the way my employees approached it to give some sort of work life balance. I was wondering for the full Time Retail Employees, how weekends off work (if it exists) and how days off and such work? Does it change every week, is there a system etc? Is taking time off impossible? Any information would be useful, and I feel like it is best to hear from actual employees. I'm in NYC if that helps, but I'm sure information from anywhere will be useful. Also if anyone is an Operations Expert, any information would be sweet as well! Thanks!! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 18 Jan 2019 04:55 PM PST What are everyone's favorite thunderbolt 3 docks? And have you found anything that you didn't think would be useful in one that surprised you? I'm curious too if there are even any docks that do 4k at 60hz and multiple 5gbps usb ports at the same time, or is there a limitation of port speed that prevents it. Also has anyone even seen slim portable docks that are true thunderbolt 3 through a single cable? most I've seen are usb-c and not true thunderbolt-3 unless they're the dual ones that plug into 2 of the macbook pros usb-c ports at the same time. what are some of your favorite docks? Smart battery case for XS Max: first impressions Posted: 18 Jan 2019 03:16 AM PST I know there might be lots of posts springing up here about the new smart battery case, but for those who may be interested - here are my initial thoughts, after popping one on my XS Max last night. The case takes an age to charge initially - they all seem to arrive at 0%. It took 2.5 hours to charge fully. Without the handset in it, it doesn't seem too heavy, and the silicone is nice and grippy. The handset is super easy to slide in and out, which I love! Particularly ss I hate swapping cases on my phones as it can be just a fiddle. But boy is this thing big and heavy with the case on! Really heavy.... This can be a double-edged sword. Because, whilst it is heavy and bulky, the weight distribution is focused on the bottom of the phone, making it much easier to balance in the hand when holding it one-handed. With the leather case, I was always worried it would slip from my hands. But not with this case. The silicone does protrude more - both the lip of the case and the width of it, adding further bulk from almost every angle. It makes the XS Max look a little like the XR handset - the case protrudes so that it give the impression of a much bigger bezel... One thing I have noticed that I am not has been mentioned by others is that, the bottom bar (home-screen indicator) stays on when usually it would disappear. This is only the case with some apps. It disappears when watching a youtube video in landscape, but otherwise is on the entire time. It's there the entire time when using apps like Apollo. I am sure that this wasn't the case before... Although maybe my brain fell out, and it was! Also swiping up feels differently now that the entire phone is covered, as there is no cut out on this case at the bottom (obvs).All-in-all, I like the case. It looks a little geeky and awkward and is nowhere near as sleek, chic and gorgeous as the leather case. But it does make the phone easier to grip, and the extra power is a significant boon. But do be aware, that this thing is heavy! For me, I want a case that gives me peace of mind regarding usage but that also helps to retain the health of the battery in the phone itself. It's trade off for sure...I hope this helps anyone considering buying the new case! [link] [comments] |
iTunes and the Music app on the iPhone get worse and worse all the time Posted: 18 Jan 2019 07:52 PM PST The last two years, I have more and more and more problems with music on my iPhone. It seems like new problems pop up all the time, and Apple never fixes anything. I get it, they want everyone to only listen to music via streaming, and no longer care to support people who spent several thousands of dollars on iTunes over the last decade, or those who have ripped their music from CDs into iTunes. My biggest problem is that my songs never update their info on my phone. The play count and last played date never update. If I star rate a song from my iPhone, the rating doesn't stay. This makes smart playlists pretty much useless. I have a smart playlist for songs I've never played before. But....nothing ever leaves that playlist, UNLESS I play the song in iTunes while my phone is plugged into my Mac. I have a massive music library (close to 200,000 songs in iTunes, and around 65,000 songs on my 512 gb XS Max. When I'm listening to bands and albums I haven't listened to before, I like to assign star ratings when I like a song, and that helps ensure I'll be able to easily find the song again later. This used to work, but...not any more, because of the non updating problem. Very frustrating. Also, I have some albums that I own on CD and I unknowingly also purchased them in iTunes. Since I rip albums at a higher bit rate than iTunes, I prefer having the ripped versions in my itunes. Unfortunately, iTunes won't let me put a ripped album on my phone if I ever purchased it in iTunes. Annoying. I've followed countless advice from countless websites to try to resolve both of these problems, but...nothing ever works. Does anyone here have any advice? I DO use Apple Music also, and I've wondered if discontinuing the subscription would maybe help. If nothing else, I'd like to stop throwing Apple an extra $10 per month, but...I do really like the service. Maybe it's time to switch to Spotify. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 18 Jan 2019 07:26 PM PST I'm trying to clean install Mojave on my 2018 MBP but everytime it takes about 2 hours, and puts all my old files and programs and everything back on it. I'm going it from the recovery menu > reinstall Mac OS. Any ideas? I cant figure out what I'm doing wrong here. [link] [comments] |
Did Anybody With a Mastercard & Apple Pay Get Notified About Fraud? Posted: 18 Jan 2019 05:58 PM PST My credit union notified me about some sort of "card compromise". The bank said due to the agreement this merchant has with financial institutions, they can't tell me which merchant was compromised unless they went public with the incident. While the bank rep said she couldn't tell me WHICH merchant it was, she said that I could look at my current "pending" transactions and narrow it down. It was a merchant with an authorized / reoccurring charge. I only have a charge from Apple that is reoccurring!? Did anybody else experience this today? [link] [comments] |
Amazing Customer Service Story Posted: 18 Jan 2019 05:52 PM PST Still speechless. About two weeks ago I was messing around with my iPad Pro 12.9 from 2017. Noticed some backlight bleeding towards the top that I hadn't remembered being there. It kinda bugged me and I was feeling bored so I hit up Apple support to see what they could do for me. Who knows, possibly a free screen replacement? Keep in mind, I have no AppleCare. Apple support tells me they can't do anything for me as it'd cost $600(!!!) to repair it. Woah. It's just some minor backlight bleed towards the top. Nah, it's cool. Thanks anyway, Apple. I'll live. A day later I get a call from someone at Apple. He asks me some questions about my issues. I answer them. Then he tells me that they're going to send me the new (yes, the NEW) iPad Pro, same size, storage, and color as the one I have. Once I receive it, just send mine back and I'm good to go. First thing I say is: what's the catch? Nope, nothing. Only catch is that I have to sell my Smart Cover and Apple Pencil! Super fair trade. Never in my life have I had such amazing customer service. They had absolutely no reason to help me and I didn't expect any help either. I was just bored and wanted to see if I could get a free screen replacement, possibly even replace the device and get me a fresh battery? But a brand new iPad? Just, wow. Apple's prices may be absolutely insane nowadays and I don't completely agree with the direction they've been going, but their customer service will always be WAY better than anyone else's TLDR: My 2017 iPad Pro had backlight bleed. Asked Apple support for help. They said nope, $600. No AppleCare. A day later, Apple says "actually nah, have a brand new 2018 iPad Pro". [link] [comments] |
