Avoid awkward situations when someone is using your iPhone by turning on Do Not Disturb from your Apple Watch.

    Posted: 10 Jan 2019 04:24 PM PST

Most of us have probably been in that awkward situation when some one is having a FaceTime conversation on our phone and a bunch of text messages start coming in, showing who ever is using your phone all of your incoming messages. If you have an Apple Watch and realize this impending doom while someone is using your phone, no need to snatch your phone back. Just swipe up on your watch and turn on Do Not Disturb from your watch and relax.

With all of this new passionate support for services Apple now has, I’m hoping that’ll translate into Apple improving their garbage iCloud web client.

    Posted: 10 Jan 2019 07:34 AM PST

As someone who is trying to wean off of gmail, I've transitioned to using iCloud as my personal email. It's web client version is one of the worst I've ever used. The user interface hasn't changed since it was MobileMe back in 2008. That's unacceptable.

The mail functionality, both the web client and iOS versions are so barebones and absent of any modern mailbox features it's depressing. As much as I love Apple products, Apple sometimes takes forever just to make simple changes and it's super frustrating.

I'm hoping since that now they're focusing on services that they'll finally fix these neglected services - which is long overdue.

    airplay 1 vs 2 functionality

    Posted: 10 Jan 2019 08:44 PM PST

Whats the difference between Airplay 1 and 2?

The protocol is more robust but does it have the same limitations?

Specifically if you are airplaying to an airport express with airplay 2 support or an airplay 2 receiver from your phone and you get a phone call is the stream interupted?

Similarly can multiple people queue items up or does one person override the other if they airplay to the same a2 target?.

Can a phone do other things while airplaying to an a2 target and not affect the stream (ie watch a video, etc.) or will that audio be airplayed.

Something Apple doesn't get enough praise for

    Posted: 10 Jan 2019 10:41 AM PST

I just recently bought a Pixel 2 XL to take with me on a trip because of the camera and low light photography compared to my 6s. Although I love the phone and genuinely enjoy both OSs, the scrolling on iOS is so much better than on Android. iOS feels smooth and consistent compared to the jittery/abruptness of Android scrolling

Thoughts on Editor Notes in Apple Music?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2019 09:58 PM PST

I'm not quite sure how other music streaming services handle descriptions of albums within their UI, but I have always found Apple Music's Editor Notes to be extraordinarily polished and insightful, while simultaniously being under appreciated.

If Apple's A-series chips progress at the same rate they have over the last several years, then this year's iPad Pro will be Apple's fourth fastest computer, trailing only behind the top three iMac Pros (which start at $5800). Am I thinking too much into this, or is this a really big deal?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2019 10:12 AM PST

Take a look at Geekbench's Mac and iOS Benchmarks lists:

    http://browser.geekbench.com/mac-benchmarks http://browser.geekbench.com/ios-benchmarks

Year-over-year, iOS devices nearly double in CPU performance. Macs (Intel) are progressing at a much slower rate.

In terms of performance, the jump from 2017 iPad Pro to 2018 Pro is similar from jumping from Mac Pro (Early 2009) Intel Xeon W5590 to Mac Pro (Late 2013) Intel Xeon E5-1650. One year of iPad progression matched nearly five years of Mac Pro progression.

This means (if Apple doesn't change the pricing) that in 2019, Apple will release an $800 iPad that's more powerful than any MacBook Pro or Mac Pro that's existed in any configuration. 2020's devices will be >30% faster than any Intel CPU available today.

Two hardware limitations I see are graphics and RAM. Unfortunately Apple decided to skimp out on RAM in 2018 iPad Pros, giving 6GB of RAM only to the 1TB model at $1549. I'm not sure what limitations there are aside from general performance when comparing Apple's SoC GPU to say, Intel or Nvidia or AMD. Gaming Performance is on-par with Xbox One S according to Apple -- this should compare to some low end-GPUs at least, no? As for storage and RAM, prices keep dropping (though Apple keeps their insane margins). Today, you can get a 1TB PCIe SSD and 8GB of RAM for under $300. I don't think Apple will ever go in the direction of letting users upgrade their own storage or RAM in iOS devices, but I'm just saying, in theory, they could beef up specs for not a ton of money.

And then of course, there's the software problem. The common theme around 2018 iPad Pro reviews were "it's insanely fast, but that power is crippled by iOS." Am I wrong to think that A-series chips are capable of a ton more than they are now? If Apple were to completely blow us away with a Pro-level iOS this year, could iPad Pro be capable of replacing full on workstations with multimonitor support, background apps and processes (i.e. a media or game server, etc), and more compatibility with external devices via USB-C?

As much as a dream of a beefed-up iOS, I fear that Apple won't let iPad be a full computer replacement, as it'd destroy their Mac business. Why would anybody buy a $5000 Mac when you can get an $800 tablet that's faster and equally as capable?

People who use Siri on macOS, what do you use it for?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2019 12:36 AM PST

I suspect it's used much less on macOS than on iOS/watchOS/tvOS/HomePod, so I'm curious about how it's being used.

For me personally, I turned on Type to Siri in System Preferences and use it for notes and reminders. I've found that that's faster than going into the Notes and Reminders apps, especially if I'm in full screen mode.

    Uneven trackpad Macbook

    Posted: 10 Jan 2019 03:33 PM PST

I just got my new Macbook pro 15 inch (2018) and after a few hours I noticed that the bottom left and the top right corners of the trackpad are pretty much flush with the the rest of the body while the top left and bottom right corners are slightly lower. It's kind of annoying since I barely notice when a go off the trackpad. But on the other hand it's such a small difference that i can't even see it, I can only feel it. Is this normal or should I take it back to the store?
