iPhone SE won’t activate after upgrade to IOS12

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 07:14 AM PST

I have an iPhone SE that is going in for battery replacement. It's 2.5 years old and works great. Or at least it did until I upgraded it to 12

The initial upgrade was an OTA update. Everything worked until I was presented with the login screen after the update was complete. I entered the four digit pin and the phone would lock up on the last digit. The number remained highlighted like I was pushing it but the phone went unresponsive.

    Ok, forced reset.

    Try again. Same.

Le sigh. Ok, I guess we go into recovery mode.

Put the phone into recovery mode and perform an iTunes restore. It wiped the phone and reinstalled IOS 12, and here is where I'm stuck.

The phone will not activate. The error message I get is that the activation servers aren't available but that's not true.

I've tested the same with my iPhone XS and everything works like a champ on my home network.

Working with Apple I was escalated to a senior support engineer and worked for two hours with her.

I tried a new user on my Mac with iTunes restore. I tried a windows machine with iTunes. We tried cellular activation. All fails.

Just throwing this out there if anyone has a similar experience. I'm looking at a $270 charge if I want Apple to repair this old phone.

iOS 12.1 XS photos - grainy!

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 07:48 AM PST

Has anyone noticed, that since iOS 12.1 the photos are grainy and looks pretty ugly when it's low light (not completely dark) outside? My photos looked so smooth and had nice colors when i bought the XS Max and now the photos are just ugly. Is it because they tweaked the "beautygate issue" which I never found to be an issue? Anyone experiencing the same?

Your opinions on the iPhone XS

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 08:56 AM PST

Okay, so basically my iPhone 8 Plus has overheated and the home button has cracked and is unusable. The phone is also losing battery rapidly when I'm not using it. So, I'm wanting your opinions on the XS. They have one left in stock in my local apple store and we are on the fence about it. It's pricey, but at the same time I don't want my current phone to just stop working randomly. I wouldn't go for another 8 Plus just in case the same thing happens again. I'm not too worried about the no home button factor as I'm currently using assistive touch on this one anyway. Is the XS much better than the 8 Plus? Is the size a huge difference, and do you get used to it? Just looking for stuff like that really, preferably from XS users, like a general review. Thank you.

    iPhone XR Display Question

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 11:14 PM PST

I hope I don't get downvoted as I would really just like some other perspectives.

I recently went from a 6S Plus to an XR. Looking at a few apps side by side (with True Tone turned off, night shift off, and brightness the same) I find myself preferring the display of the 6S Plus. I think it's because the whites of the Plus are bright and white whereas the XR its a little more dull and muddy. It doesn't look nearly as white. So when I use a dark background the white text appears a bit less sharp than the Plus. Am I crazy?

A genuine well done to Apple, your almost 3 year old phone feels premium.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 05:08 PM PST

Edit: Not a question, don't seem to be able to remove the flair. Sorry.

I've always been one to buy the budget smartphone. Up until about 3 months ago I owned an iPhone 5c which I found adequate for my needs. I could contact my friends, use social media and play games. Then it got run over by a car and got completely destroyed, and as I was very short on money at the time I picked up a Samsung Galaxy J3 from my friend for £100 and have been using that up until yesterday. About a week ago, I decided the Samsung just wasn't doing what I wanted it to do, and paid £150 for a secondhand iPhone SE. After using it for just a day, I am beyond impressed at how fast, powerful and premium this almost 3 year old device feels. Comparing it to the Galaxy J3 which was Samsung's budget phone of 2016, the SE just completely blows it out of the water, although it did cost a fair amount more and obviously had more development put into it. I am still trying to get to terms with just how amazing this phone feels and will be for probably the next week. Apple, well done. I'm sad I've been missing out on this great value phone for so long.

Security Alert - Strange behavior, possible malicious ads targeting iOS devices outside their the sandbox?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 05:49 AM PST

My phone was in silent mode (mute switch on) sitting on my desk at home, when it started playing what I can only describe sounded like an 8-Bit chime, twice. I looked at my phone and the music player widget was active and it said "Congratulations". I opened the phone and didn't see anything, there were no notifications. The only apps I had open was Notes, Instagram, Grindr, and the official Reddit app. I looked at all of them and didn't see anything that might explain this. Just for kicks I did search my music for anything with congratulations in it, and there is no music. I didn't get an opportunity to screenshot it.

As someone in the IT field, this highly concerns me.

    1. How did the something other than the Alarm or an Emergency Alert by-pass the mute switch?
    2. What generated this event?
    3. If an app has ads, are the ads now apple to jump out of the sandbox?
    4. My phone is not jail broken.

I checked the iOS logs and there was an application crash by Grindr at around the same time. I do know that from past experience, recently Grindr will "click" its own ads for the user (No user interaction has occurred), and open the iTunes store directly to other games and apps.

However, correlation does not imply causation.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Sometimes haptic feedback makes a sound on my XR and sometimes it is silent. Is it like this for anyone else?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 08:57 AM PST

Sometimes it makes a small click sound that is definitely loud enough to hear from a meter away and sometimes it's completely silent. Has anyone else noticed this? Could I have a fault haptic?

Images and videos won’t send over iMessage.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 08:57 AM PST

They hang and won't send. I've tried WiFi and cell. I've tried multiple WiFi networks. I've restarted the phone and turned iMessage on and off. I've rest the network settings.

I've tried sending to different people. Tried group messages. Even sending to myself.

    Used to have no problem.

Apple cases for the iPhone XS increases to twelve, iPhone XR still zero

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 12:19 PM PST

I just broke my phone screen. Will the replacement screen be as good as the original?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 01:46 AM PST

This morning sucks. I just dropped my phone on the way to work and now the screen is cracked. Nothing major other than the small crack but it's noticeable on black background. I'll have it repaired on an Apple Authorized Service Provider nearby next week. I heard that they'll replace the entire front screen for this.

This is my first iPhone experience in my life so I don't know what to expect and asking here seems like a good choice. I want to know if the replacement screen will be as good as the original. And wether the IP68 rating stays the same. Also wether the 3D touch still works flawlessly (I use the feature a lot). I really love the screen on my new phone and it hurts if it'll get downgraded 😔

Can somebody recommend me a money management app?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 06:08 AM PST

So I have gone trough a ton of them and I'm frustrated.

I want something that can be used outside US/Canada. I live in a weird country so non of the automatic tracking stuff etc is supported!

I can pay a little upfront as long as it's not a subscription.

I just wanna have budgets, Keep track of what I'm spending money on etc, be able to save more and see what I'm doing.

I currently have 3 apps and manually enter on all 3 because non of them has everything! I'd love if you have a recommendation!

I have DollarBird Spendee(the nicest for me so far) and expense which is okay but I'm probably gonna delete it for because of the full screen ads.

sadly expense also needs a subscription from what I know.

EDIT: Mint apparently needs you to be in US/Canada

Same with personalCapital. wish they just said that in the description or something ;(

it only accepts a US phone number and needs so much info >.<
