Non-subscription alternatives to Bear for more in-depth note-taking Posted: 01 Dec 2018 11:13 AM PST Not a fan of subscription model. I understand developers need to be paid, but there are other ways such as versioned apps, in-app upgrades, etc, that I would gladly pay for. I need a fleshed-out note-taking app that's similar to Bear - something powerful but simple and can organize my thoughts more coherently. Scrivener seems a good replacement for Ulysses for non-subscription, full-blown writing; but a little heavy for brief text-based idea fleshing. [link] [comments]
iPad for academic papers; apps with reference, citation support Posted: 01 Dec 2018 01:20 PM PST I was wondering if anybody used the iPad for writing academic papers. I acknowledge that there is not well integration on the platform as of now for reference apps like Mendeley or endnotes. I used Mendeley on my Mac to organize references and then the microsoft word plug-in to quickly insert and arrange my citations. As a student and a researcher, it is important to have these tools. Does anybody have a solution for this or a writing app with good citation integration? [link] [comments]
iPad Pro and The WD My Passport Pro Wireless Hard Drive Posted: 30 Nov 2018 09:24 PM PST Back Story: I had the 9.7 iPad Pro, the 10.5 iPad Pro, and now I'm on the 11 iPad Pro. I know, a lot of iPad's. I ended up giving them away to family. Anyways, what I use it for is work, online college, video editing with LumfaFusion, RAW editing with Affinity Photo, and other multimedia consumption. Prior to purchasing the 11 iPad Pro, I had a custom built desktop that I could always fall back to when things got too much for the iPad. Well, I recently sold it so now i just have the iPad. One thing I knew that was going to be an issue was not having a traditional file system and storage. But then, I found out from YouTube about the Wireless HDD/SSD. I ended up buying a 4TB My Passport Pro Wireless with 10 hours of battery for $200. What this allows you to do is connect to the hard drive wirelessly and transfer files between each other. It can also act like a bridge between you and your router so you can transfer files while browsing the web. A bonus is it includes a SD card slot and USB slot and can automatically import videos/photos by simply plugging it in. Sounds great right? The only issue was the app that WD released to transfer files between your iPad and the hard drive isn't optimized very well. Transferring photos and excel documents (small files) usually wasn't an issue. However, if you wanted to transfer large videos, in my case GoPro/Drone 4K footage and 1080p/4K movies, it was painfully slow. I haven't successfully transferred these files wirelessly because it usually timed out or failed. If you happen to back out of the WD app you'd most likely encounter an error and would have to start the download from scratch. I thought maybe I could use split screen, one side for the WD app while I wait for the transfer to complete and the other side Safari/YouTube/etc. Thing is there is no split screen support so that's a no go. Also, when streaming video from the hard drive it pauses often and takes awhile to buffer. I do however have an app called Documents by Readdle. I use this on a daily basis as it allows me to export/transfer files like a traditional file system. Also has TouchID/FaceID support for preventing unauthorized access. I realized I was able to access my files off of the hard drive. I did a test and downloaded a 1.8GB 4K file and it took 9m23s. It does time out after awhile if you have it running in the background. If you use it in splitscreen it should download with no issues. Downloading raw files while having the app run in the background seemed fine. Keep in mind it's horrible at streaming. Another issue I found is that it will not recognize anything plugged in the SD card slot and USB slot that's built into the Passport. I have a 4TB desktop external hard drive plugged into it loaded with 4K/1080 movies/TV shows. I have another app called Infuse 5 and this allows me to access everything; wireless hard drive, SD card, and external hard drive plugged into it. And the best thing about it? Absolutely no issues with streaming movies. It did have issues streaming my 4K drone footage but it would quickly start playing after a second or two of buffering. You can also download any of the media files onto the app so you can airplay it to your Apple TV (you'll need to connect back to the network your Apple TV is on) or if you want to watch movies on the go. It did take awhile clocking in at 23m40s for an 18.8GB 1080p movie. Well that's all I got. Hopefully this helps other users in a similar situation. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions on how to get it going! [link] [comments]
Best apps for art with Apple Pencil? Posted: 01 Dec 2018 12:29 PM PST I've not taken much interest in the App Store for quite a few years. What are the best art apps for drawing/painting etc? I've also seen there are a lot of colouring apps that are subscription based. Are there any that are inexpensive and good quality? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Why do the protective iPad Pro cases take so long to release? Posted: 01 Dec 2018 07:45 AM PST I'm waiting for a good 12.9 2018 case but everything is set to be released at the end of this month. My iPad is still in its case because I'm paranoid about my electronics breaking and I usually get OtterBox cases on everything. [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Dec 2018 02:21 PM PST I need a portable device that can do: media consumption + taking notes + watching online classes and take notes at the same time + type simple documents in a word processor + type simple documents while having a browser window or a PDF open at the same time + making simple spreadsheets for personal finance control. At first I was thinking of buying a Macbook Air, but since for the same price I can get a slightly beefed up iPad Pro and accessories I might go that route, especially because I also have a desktop computer (iMac) that I might use if the need arises. Do you think that, for these tasks that I listed, an Ipad Pro would suffice? Is the keyboard for the 12.9 inch iPP much smaller than a Macbook Air's keyboard? Is it a decent keyboard? iPad Pro USB C supported earphones? Posted: 30 Nov 2018 10:10 PM PST Has anyone tested any USB C earphones which works on the new iPads? I bought a hub with headphone jack, but when I use it on my iPad it gets quite hot comparing when using with other devices such as Windows laptops. I suspect it's draining battery from the iPad itself, plus a dangling hub is quite annoying when I am playing music games on the iPad. I tried Googling but haven't found any USB C earphones which clearly states supporting iOS or even MacOS. No YouTube videos also seemed to try plugging in a usb c earphones on the new iPad. I wanted to buy the Xiaomi USB C ANC earphones but without clear indication of audio support on iOS I don't want to take the risk. (I have seen reddit post claiming that earphone is not supported on the new MacBook Pro's, but work if plugged in through a Satechi dongle, then to the MacBook...) [link] [comments]
How goes the iPad 6th gen for photo editing? Posted: 01 Dec 2018 02:16 AM PST My current Windows laptop has a screen with very inaccurate colours (something like 45% Adobe rgb) and I was thinking of picking up a 2018 iPad (non-pro) to do my photo editing on. It won't be for professional work, just my landscapes etc that I do for a hobby. So mainly I'm wondering, will there be any performance/RAW compatibility issues etc if I go with this model? I need it to handle typical adjustments such as highlights/shadows, color correction, adjustment brushes, all the standard Lightroom stuff. Again, this will mostly be for personal pleasure, editing on iPads just looks fun but I'd like to know it's up to the task. [link] [comments]
Is it possible to transfer movies to the new iPad Pro via a USB-C storage device? Posted: 30 Nov 2018 10:46 PM PST Hi everyone!~ I'm thinking of buying the new iPad Pro and I'm wondering whether or not it's possible to use a USB-C storage device to transfer movies and the like to the iPad. While I do have a MacBook it's a 2010 MacBook Air; so it's awfully slow at syncing data via iTunes (it's an otherwise wonderful system which still serves me beautifully well). I have lots of movies that weren't purchased from iTunes which I'd like to watch on my iPad, and being able to access movies via USB-C would also mean that I can pack along a lot more content with me while travelling. Not to mention that external storage (even external SSD's) are so much cheaper than buying the 256 or 512GB iPad Pro. [link] [comments]
2018 iPad Pro’s chamfered edges Posted: 01 Dec 2018 08:42 AM PST Has anybody noticed how the new iPad pros do not have chamfered edges anywhere on the device? Not even the buttons. Apple has not done this in any of its designs in a long time. [link] [comments]
Would a brand new 2nd or 3rd gen. iPad still run well in 2018? Posted: 30 Nov 2018 04:18 PM PST Despite the fact that they likely won't be eligible for any new iOS software updates? [link] [comments]
