Why is it to easy to upload photos from iphone to mac but not the other way around?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 09:42 PM PST

Simple question, when I plug in my iphone to my mac, I can easily upload my iphone photos onto my macbook, why is the same not true the other way around when I want to transfer a photo from my macbook to my iphone? I can't directly do it through the photos app, I need to use itunes or airdrop.

Questions about buying a secondhand MacBook Pro

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 09:11 PM PST

Hey guys, I need your help!

I'm purchasing a secondhand 2015 MacBook Pro tomorrow and I don't know what are the things that I should check before purchasing. Information that I do know is that the battery cycle count is 239.

Is there an iCloud lock or anything I should be aware of like with iPhones? Please help.

Avoiding buyer's regret: Mac mini OR Macbook Pro (as a desktop replacement most of the time) - Long-term reliability and battery health concerns.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 07:34 AM PST

As the title implies, I'm currently split between these two as my next purshase: Mac Mini or Macbook Pro.

Whether the MBP would be 13 or 15 inch is the least of my concerns: Under normal circumstances, I'd go all out on the Macbook Pro, seeing as how my future computer in the near future is supposed to be mostly at home, and having to not worry about a longer commute/absence certainly makes me feel relieved about my investment for the future. There are only 2 things making me wonder if at the end of the day I'll be making the smartest decision:

    1. The Butterfly Keyboard reliability in the foreseeable future: This is a bit of a shot in the dark. It is common knowledge that by now, Apple has "improved" the mechanism, by adding an small sheet of plastic, with a protective effect against dust and debris. BUT after a few hours investigating the issue, I've come to realize that not only are 2018 Macbook Pros safe yet (there are already many complaints about double tabs and non-responding keys), but also the issue with the butterfly keyboard seems to be more related with long term heat exposure damaging (i.e. warping or half-melting) the key mechanism inside, seeing as not even taking all anti-dust measures in the world (keyboard covers, washing hands, not eating while using the macbook) seem to make a positive reliability impact.
    2. Battery cycles and long-term battery health: If I bought a macbook pro, I'd have it connected to an thunderbolt-3 external monitor. And seeing as in the next year I'll be delving deep in my uni thesis (and this means 9 hours+ with the computer turned on), I'm kinda worried about how the battery will be affected. Of course, it would technically be "plugged in", in a desktop replacement situation, and I've heard that having it plugged in at all times will keep the battery healthy and at near-maximum capacity for years to come. But I've also heard the opposite: That I should let it de-charge and then re-charge again, and this seems like a hassle for someone (read: me) who will already be dealing with creative and writting-related focus problems as it is. Either way, I've heard people on both sides of the fence ("have it plugged whenever possible" vs "only plug in when necessary") tell me that I shouldn't worry about it, and that the battery will be fine for 5 years, at the very least. Considering that I've been using an iPad air ever since release, I can tell you right now that the "just don't worry about it and use it however you like" notion is complete and utter BS: I used to use the ipad everyday as a note-taking device in classes, and for reading/listening to music before bed. I'd charge it every 2 days at first, and after 1 year it increased to 1 charge per day. After 3 years the battery was already showing signs of severe decay (this was in early 2017) and nowadays, I'll be lucky if I get 3 hours of onscreen time doing the most basic of tasks.

I'd greatly appreciate if you could give me some pointers/advice in regards to both points 1 and 2 above. After all, it'll be a 2K+ investment, give or take, with either option. So I'd like to know what I can do to get the best bang for the buck.

    • What can be done to make sure that I don't have to ask for a keyboard replacement at least in the first 2 years of usage?
    • What are the practices that are conducive to the maintenance of excellent battery life? I've heard of users reporting having their MBP batteries at around 100 cycles and 95% of health after 2 years of usage by plugging them to AC power whenever possible. Can you confirm this?

Needless to say I'm 90% inclined to go for the MBP, it's just the reliability that concerns me, nothing else.

Am I fooked beer spilled during battery replacement?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 04:02 PM PST

Last night I was going to replace the battery (Nu TECH from OWC) on my mid-2014 retina Macbook 11,1. I got the cover off and long story short spilled a beer on the upper farthest from the battery.

    • Baterry was fully discharged before this happened
    • She has just been sitting so far, have not tried to turn back on.

Should I go ahead and replace the battery and see if she boots? The previous battery still worked just barely kept a charge. Should I try to isopropyl spot clean anything? I don't see any beer reside anywhere.

    Thanks guys.

    Streaming 4K content

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 08:30 AM PST

Anyone aware of places I can stream UHD content on a 2018 MacBook pro?

I know Netflix doesn't allow, Amazon seems to be HD when you stream a 4K movie (maybe I'm doing something wrong) all I can see works at the moment is youtube on chrome (but not movies) or natively downloading a full movie.

    Thanks.

    Malware notifications on Safari

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 05:02 AM PST

    Hi folks,

I keep getting suspicious notifications popping up in Safari.

'You have a new message!' or 'Do not ignore this message - click here.'

I've cleared my cookies, cache, downloaded Malwarebytes and scanned (with zero results, worryingly).

I've also just gone into Safari Preferences and removed the sites in the 'Notifications' area. So far so good, but I'm a bit concerned about something malicious lingering on my Mac. I do my banking from here so am keen to have a clean Mac.

Should I be worried or is it likely to still be around?
