How to use iPhone as wired hotspot instead of wireless

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 04:51 PM PST

I have an iPhone 7+ and a laptop with Windows 10, and I use my iPhone as a hotspot to my laptop, and I'm able to connect them over WiFi but i know that through USB is faster, but I can't figure out how to make it a USB connection instead of a wireless one, can anyone help?

2009 Macbook Pro El Capitan Freezing/no Wifi

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 01:35 PM PST

I have a 2009 MBP that was brought to me with a bad HDD. I hardly work on macs so I pretty much said I'll get the data off of it and reinstall mac on a new solid state drive through the recovery mode.

I did that, everything went exactly like it has on all of my personal mac products. He now has constant freezing when he closes the lid and waits a little while. His Wifi only works when it wants to and not even a NVRAM or SMC reboot fixes it all the time.

Today I wiped the drive, reinstalled El Capitan and have the exact same issues... I tried it again with a new drive and have the exact same issues.

I've googled a lot but haven't come up with much other than reset the NVRAM or SMC. Is there a possibility that there's an issue with the OS itself or is it more likely there's a hardware issue?

edit: I have read a lot that there's a way to reinstall mac os without an apple id. No matter how I go about it in the recovery mode it asks for one. Is there a special way that this needs to be done? Each of the ways to enter recovery mode ends with the same result.

Has Apple discontinued mail-in repairs for MacBooks?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 07:58 PM PST

My friend's MacBook Pro gave out on him today. It's under warranty, but when he called Apple for repairs, they said he had to bring the laptop to an Apple store, and they couldn't send him a shipping label to mail it in with. He lives in a rural area in Canada and the nearest Apple store is far away, so it'd be pretty expensive for him to take it there. I remember other people talking about mailing in MacBooks for repair in the past, and I found an article as well as posts on here implying that this used to be a thing.

Has Apple indeed discontinued mail-in repair service for MacBooks, or did my friend just get a bad service representative? If they have discontinued it, any idea how long ago they changed the policy? Thanks for any information.

My Apple Watch will not pair with my new iPhone X

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 05:31 PM PST

Please help, I'm honestly going to lose my mind. I had this watch set up on an old iPhone. I've erased the watch and reset it to factory settings, unpaired it from my Apple ID, changed my Apple ID password, reset the watch again... I don't know what to do at this point except take it into a store soon and beg them to find out what I'm doing wrong. My phone gets prompted to connect to the watch, but when I set it up to the viewfinder thing - nothing. I even try to do it manually and enter a code - nothing comes up on the watch.

Edit : Managed to back up my old phone and see the option to unpair the watch, but now it says there's an error unpairing it (and the watch had already been reset, so I can't do it from the watch)

    RIP my sanity

    late-2016 9.7 iPad Pro: Am I screwed?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 03:50 PM PST

This is from a pro-9.7 purchased in the later months of 2016. Broke the screen, and figured "I've done this dozens of times for Android, iPad will be no biggie."

This is my only casualty from doing so, and I was able to very easily remove it from the digitizer with an xacto blade, so I'll chalk it up to carelessness on separating the LCD/digitizer from the body.

My question, though, is: What is this part? I can't find anything resembling it on any of the teardowns. My imagination is that it's the sensor for when magnetic covers turn off the screen, which is something we can live without, but if it's more important than that, I gotta replace it.

Just replaced the battery on my early 2013 MacBook Pro Retina, the battery only lasts 3 hours, did I likely do something wrong?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 09:29 PM PST

So I replaced the battery on my Early 2013 MBP Retina, which has had almost no issues so for the past 5 years since I purchased it. I ordered this battery from Amazon for the replacement: https://www.amazon.com/EGOWAY-Replacement-Battery-MacBook-Version/dp/B07G46DSJG/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1546233198&sr=1-3&keywords=a1425+battery+macbook+pro

This afternoon I replaced the battery based on the instructions of this guy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qATGvQs3zc

    But now there's two issues:

    1) After the laptop charges to 100% with a green light on the charging cable, I can take out the cable and use it on battery power just fine. However, even if I only leave it unplugged for a literal second, the moment I stick the charger back in it says 95% battery and I have to wait several minutes for the battery to turn back from amber/orange to green.

    2) When I turned on the computer after I replaced the battery (no issues with startup) it was at 70%. I let it charge up until the light turned green on the charger cord and I left my apartment to run errands for three hours. Then when I came back I took out the cord and let the laptop run on battery power. I let the battery deplete completely. It lasted about 3 hours with no programs open and with no sleeping allowed.

Is there anything I could do to see if there's any other issues with my macbook? I don't think I screwed up the battery installation but in case I did I'm not opposed to just getting a refurbished computer entirely

Thank you in advance for your help

Can’t play some of my own music after using trial of Apple Music

I know this question probably has been asked a million times but the suggestion how to fix it doesn't help me. I can't play some of my music unless I press shuffle. If I try to play a song directly it will tell me to pick my plan for Apple Music

Question about backing up a mac/timemachine

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 05:48 PM PST

I'm not familiar with mac systems, however my SO has one. I grabbed her a external drive to back up her stuff on. Now from my understanding time machine will do daily backups, depending on how often the drive is plugged in. My question is, since it deletes the oldest backups, would this be a good fit? She has about 200GB of photos and videos that once backed up, will be deleted from the laptop. We have a cloud backup already, just wanted a local as well. But if I delete from the laptop, will they eventually be deleted from Time Machine? That is kind of how I take it.

Would it be smarter to just create my own folder on the drive and just backup the documents.

Thanks for the help in advance, let me know if I can make it more clear.

Late 2014 Mac Mini MGEN2*/A (Mojave 10.14.2) is running slow... some days

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 11:30 AM PST

I noticed that with my late 2014 Mac Mini MGEN2*/A (Mojave 10.14.2) it can run slow without an explanation. Some days it's perfectly normal, some days it's unbelievability slow. I notice that if you switch from one profile to another this is the kiss of death and the computer becomes unusable.

Side effects of a "slow day" would be text substitution not working, Chrome taking a very long time to load websites, iMessage messages will not load until a few minutes after being sent from an iPhone and just other ways that the Mac is just dragging on example: click on anything and seeing the spinning wheel.

I'm currently on a "slow day" my (of course they are adjusting just a little while typing this) Idle is 89.73%, System is 3.80% & User is 3.70%

Any help would be great because I really do rely on text substitution for work.

Screen Sharing Stopped Working MacOS 10.12.6

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 05:14 PM PST

The in-built screen sharing application just randomly stopped working. It keeps saying the person I'm trying to connect to is unavailable and that is happening on both ends. In the sharing section in the system prefs I do have Screen Sharing check marked and screen sharing connections are not being blocked. I have restarted my computer multiple times.

    Slow older iMac 21.5 11,2 mid 2010

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 04:50 PM PST

Intel core i3 3.06GHz a whopping 4 gigs of RAM. 2 cores 256kb L1cache. Very slow on current OS High Sierra.

Would a RAM upgrade to 16G make this machine functional? It stalls with any processing command. Apps take minutes to open.

Tell me like it is. Very grateful.

Help with Symbolic Links and OneDrive

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 04:34 PM PST

    Hi all!

Just bought a MBP after 4 years of Windows.

I have all of my documents on OneDrive and want to keep them there. I'd like to make the "Documents" folder in OneDrive be the actual documents folder in my home folder on OS X.

I followed this tutorial (https://www.howtogeek.com/204595/how-to-move-special-folders-on-os-x-to-cloud-storage/) as it seemed to promise to do exactly that, but that only seems to be creating a shortcut link to the OneDrive Documents folder in the Home Folder Documents folder, not redirecting the Home Folder to OneDrive.

Am I missing something or misunderstanding what this is supposed to be doing? Is there another way to make the OneDrive "Documents" folder be the default documents folder on OS X (and may even also backup to iCloud for some redundancy)?

    Thanks!

Need to convert partition map type from MBR to GUID without reinstalling.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 04:33 PM PST

Hello, I'm trying to upgrade my OS from 10.9.5 to 10.10 (and so on) but in order to do that the partition map scheme must be GUID not MBR as it presently is.

My initial though was to do a dd copy of the main partition onto another drive, then install that other drive into the laptop for good. I did the dd copy, but when it completed it was not bootable. What did I do wrong here/what other ways could I go about this without doing a reinstall?

    Thank you for your help!

As per the sidebar: The laptop is a Mid 2012 15" Macbook OS 10.9.5, 512GB SSD, 16GB RAM, external 1TB Samsung EVO.

iPhone 7 Plus randomly turns black and occasionally non responsive

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 03:48 PM PST

So this has been happening to me recently where my 7 Plus (12.1) would randomly just turn off the screen and I can't turn it on for a few minutes. It just becomes non responsive.

The only way I could get the screen back on is if I used the home button and accidentally turn on Siri.

Even when I get it back on, sometimes the screen would just be non responsive.

I have no idea what's going on. I live in la and the weather has gotten colder (like 50s) so I wonder if it's the cold temperature messing with the phone ?

iPhone dropping Google WiFi connection randomly

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 11:04 AM PST

My iPhone keeps disconnecting from my Google Wifi mesh network during video conferences and voip calls. Extremely frustrating as you can imagine. I've Reset the phone completely thinking that might be the issue. The only solution is to go into WiFi and manually reconnect to the network.

I haven't noticed this on any other devices on my network.

    Has anyone run into this?

Help or pointers very much appreciated

Can I use keep iTunes synced on an iPhone and iPad without using a computer?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 01:02 PM PST

My mom uses an iPhone and iPad for music, but doesn't really use iTunes on the computer. Is there a way she can keep her playlists and purchased music synced between these two devices without needing to use use iTunes on a computer? I've been trying to figure this out but I haven't had an iPhone in years so I'm not too familiar with how it works. Most of what I find on Google basically says I can't do this, but I'm not sure if that's old information.

She says that if she made a new playlist or edited a playlist on one device, sometimes that would appear on her other device but not always. She just got a new iPad to replace one that hadn't been working for a few months. When we set it up, it seems to have restored from a cloud backup of her iPad 2, but she immediately noticed some playlists missing that she has created recently on her iPhone. When I try to look at her iPhone to see if there's some way to force a sync to the cloud, it says I have to hook it up to iTunes on a computer. Any effort to Google this usually begins with "Step 1: Hook your device up to a computer with iTunes". Is there really no way to keep this synced between devices without having to go through iTunes on Windows (she doesn't have an Apple laptop)?

Can't connect 2018 mbp to starbucks wifi?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 12:57 PM PST

Hey, I've run into a super weird issue that I've been trying to troubleshoot today. I'm trying to connect to starbucks' wifi, and while I can apparently connect, no pages are loading including the landing portal / captive site to actually let me log in. I've tried restarting the computer, fiddling with DNS settings to no avail. When I connect I can't ping the router or anything else.

The weirdest thing is that when I've connected to the wifi, my compupter itself actually significantly slows down, taking 7-8 seconds of the screen freezing to close iTerm or safari while 'connected' to the starbucks wifi, like it's somehow taking all my cpu cycles. My phone can connect / login to the starbs wifi fine so I know it's just my computer. Any ideas?

“Disconnecting Nearby Wi-Fi Until Tomorrow”, does it really work? Because I’m not seeing it.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 10:37 AM PST

I had it turned off, and minutes later after leaving the house it just toggled back on (in Blue). Is this just me or is this really as annoying as I'm seeing it?

Why can't we toggle it manually on and off from the control center anymore? Appreciate the help if there's a way.
