PSA Replace your battery for $29 before 31st

    Posted: 24 Dec 2018 03:47 PM PST

If you have iPhone 6 or newer, you can replace your battery for $29 (regular $79) before 31st. Got a battery replacement for my iPhone X today which was at 90% capacity. Even though I didn't need it, the phone will age better in year 2 now. (Also they cracked my screen during repair so they changed it for free)

    Smart HDR is seriously impressive

    Posted: 24 Dec 2018 05:49 PM PST

Taken at Minato Mirai, Yokohama, Japan.

Just look how the iPhone is able to capture the bright objects while still able to maintain the clouds in the sky. All that processing without any lag or slowdowns in the phone. Live Photo mode. In an instant. Just damn impressive.

    Merry Christmas everyone!

EDIT: Taken with iPhone XS Max. No editing. All defaults. Just point and shoot.

The iPhone XR should have been called the iPhone 9

    Posted: 24 Dec 2018 05:14 PM PST

Apple has definitely made their name scheme a mess this year, using every different form of "X" they can find. I really believe that they should have at least named the XR the iPhone 9 instead. Not only because the 9 name wasn't used but also because it generally makes sense. In some ways the current XR is kind of a downgrade from the original X due to it having LCD, thick bezels, and a single camera so it makes sense for it to be called the 9, placing it in between the 8 and X. I guess the main reason Apple didn't do that is because they didn't want to outright hint at the fact that their new phone is a downgrade from last years phone which would turn customers off.

You should be able to shout "Hey Siri, where are you?" and Siri pings your phone/iPad so you can find it.

iPhone XS and new MacBook Pro

    Posted: 24 Dec 2018 08:56 PM PST

I'm sorry if this has already been discussed...

How ridiculous that I just bought two of Apple's newest and most popular products and they can't connect without buying a USB-C cord for the iPhone or a converter for the MacBook. So I'm spending approximately $2400 total but can't connect them without spending more on another cord.... why is the iPhone XS even being sold w USB cord and not USB-C? Wonder when they're making this transition.

Can the 2018 Mac Mini be propped up sideways and used that way long term? I know it doesn't have support legs, but I would support it safely. I just would like to know if this position would affect the Mini’s functionality in any way?

Please make shortcuts run more natively

    Posted: 24 Dec 2018 07:02 AM PST

Currently, shortcuts run just like workflows used to, but that was in a fairly hacky way, using bookmarks to URLs. Now that shortcuts can do so much more, how come when I run one from the home screen it has to open an 'app' for the shortcut, that then bounces over the Shortcuts app, then actually runs? This just seems clunky; something that was only meant for the development versions. Please, Apple, make this work more smoothly.

We should be able to create smart playlists on the Apple Music app!

    Posted: 24 Dec 2018 07:26 AM PST

I have a ton of different music that I listen to and I dislike having to either constantly maintain my playlists or constantly change the song one at a time and the best solution that I've found is the Smart Playlist feature on the iTunes desktop app but this feature is missing from the Apple Music iPhone app. Apple has done a really good job at breaking away the iPhone from iTunes, I can't even remember the last time I plugged my phone into my PC to use iTunes, but it would be really great if we could have this feature in the iPhone app rather than just on iTunes!

For owners of 2 or more Homepods, How does it compare to dedicated surround sound systems playing through Apple TV?

    Posted: 24 Dec 2018 10:22 AM PST

I'm looking for a low/mid-range surround sound system for a small/medium size apartment (Spotify, Netflix, etc). I own 1 Homepod and really like it and was thinking about purchasing a second Homepod and Apple TV. I'm looking for feedback whether I should go with this plan or get something else, perhaps Sonos. B&H Photo has a pretty sweet deal going on.

Edit: Thanks y'all. I think i'll hold off.

The new update completely ruined my WiFi on IPhone 8+, anyone have any advice?

    Posted: 24 Dec 2018 06:54 AM PST

After updating my iPhone the other die my WiFi has literally been in shambles. It says connected but nothing loads, YouTube videos just keep buffering and buffering and as soon as I switch to cellular it loads instantly. When I run a Speedtest it says I'm getting 70 mbps but everything is still painfully slow, it's not even loading imgur pages. I've trying a hard reset, resetting router, resetting phones network settings, but nothing seems to be working. It was working perfectly fine before the update.

The inside of the packaging paper for the Designed by Apple in California book is quite interesting

    Posted: 25 Dec 2018 01:29 AM PST

Gave this to my dad this morning. Thought the packaging paper was quite interesting - in a book dedicated to design, uses the much maligned 'hon' iPhone 5c case... Also very reminiscent of the new Watch packaging, but I'm not sure if this came first or not.

    Anyway, merry Christmas everyone!

Bought an iPad for my mother. Will activating the device send her phone a notification?

    Posted: 24 Dec 2018 02:50 PM PST

I bought my mother an iPad for Christmas. I want to activate it for her (with her current Apple ID) and have it play music on Christmas morning as a surprise. But I don't want my activating the iPad the night before to ruin said surprise. I can't find anything on this topic in the search bar or via google. Does anyone have any insight on this topic?

    Cheers and Happy holidays.

    FOUR 1080p displays w/ 2016 MacBook Pro 13"?

    Posted: 24 Dec 2018 07:57 PM PST

    x-posted from r/macbookpro

Just wondering if this is possible. I know Apple says that it will support unto 2 external 4k displays. But since 1080p displays aren't as straining on the laptop as the 4k ones, would my 13" 2016 w/ 4 Thunderbolt 3 ports be able to run 4 1080p external monitors (clamshell mode or otherwise, doesn't matter)?

Does any magnetic case allow wireless charging?

    Posted: 24 Dec 2018 10:34 PM PST

My wife has a CaseMe wallet and magnetic case for her iPhone XS Max. She is particular about the wallet. I got her a standard wireless charger, but the magnetic case prevents wireless charging.

Is it possible to find a different magnetic case, that would work with her wallet and with a wireless charger?

Mac mini 5k display does not instantly turn on when the Mac mini does

    Posted: 24 Dec 2018 08:17 PM PST

Would anyone be able to assist with this issue so that when the Mac mini is switched on the LG 5k display turns on as well. You can't wake the screen by pressing anything on the keyboard or mouse, it takes about 15 seconds. Thanks in advance

My last post got removed for Rule 11 (which I don't think this violates) so fingers crossed I used the correct words this time around.
