Buying an iPhone X in late 2018: what are your thoughts?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 08:52 AM PST

Right now here in my country I can buy a sealed, in the box iPhone X 256GB for about the same price as an iPhone XR 128GB. I was wondering if it would be worth it for the dual camera and OLED display, or if the XR would be a better choice. What are your thoughts?

    Spurious battery health reading

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 09:37 AM PST

Wanted to share my experience, but this is mostly a PSA to take advantage of the cheap battery replacement at the apple store before it expires.

I have an October '16 vintage iPhone 7. Over the last 6 months battery health read 88% and just dropped to 87%. The battery life was appalling- 2 charges a day with minor use. I'd bring it home from work with less than 50%. This made me not believe the health reading. Disabling features didn't seem to help.

At the apple store it showed 596 cycles, which is unusual as Apple themselves state that iPhone batteries typically reach 80% capacity after 500 cycles, which is presumably under ideal conditions. This device definitely hasn't been treated ideally, with overheating and full cycling. Because it was reading above 80% they tried to convince me not to change the battery.

So I got the battery changed, and now the longevity has improved a ridiculous amount- after a day of light usage at work I am bringing it home with 85% remaining charge. This despite the genius saying I would probably not notice a difference replacing at 87% capacity. Now I can happily use the phone for at least another year as it is performing great.

Black Friday/Cyber Monday Event - What products are likely on sale?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 07:28 AM PST

    Hi guys

coming from my ancient galaxy s4 it is finally time to pick up a new phone and my money is on the xs - Is there any chance of some special offers regarding the Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale on Apple.com (or maybe some packages like airpods and iphone, just an example, dont beat me do it guys)

I´m from Germany so all these fancy bf sales @ walmart, best buy and so on are nothing for me and it will be my first iphone, so sorry if these questions are kind of dumb

Thanks for your help, really appreciate it (and sorry for my bad language :D )

Does anyone know it there is a way to better train ‘Hey Siri’.

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 10:02 AM PST

    Things I find difficult are:

    • Getting Hey Siri to recognise I'm trying to invoke it.
    • Siri stops listening while I am still talking or only gets the first word.
    • It does some very random things; for example if I say 'Play the last song I listened to' it says 'I don't recognise that song'
    • if I am listening to music and the say 'Hey Siri, read me the news' it then plays the news. That stops and when I say 'Hey Siri, carry on playing music' it will Only okay Podcasts.

I quite like Apple stuff but find Siri to be less than useful.

I have got an iPhone XS on 12.1.

    Switching from Android to Apple

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 12:03 AM PST

So I've finally decided that I will be making the switch to Apple and will be picking up the XR this weekend. I would like to get some recommendations of some great apps that you guys feel I should definitely have or will come in handy. Also some cool games that are fun as well.

    My reminders are not arriving

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 09:25 AM PST

I have reminders set for a whole lot of things. I have two lists which need to remind me of things every day. My prescription pills and my projects (I'm a freelance videographer). My Pills list is scattered throughout the day, and reminders from my Projects list are set to remind me every day at noon.

The reminders from my pills list get "Completed" every day, and the reminders from my "Projects" list get dismissed every day until I eventually finish them.

What happens is, sometimes my reminders simply don't arrive or I should say, stop arriving, until I go into the Reminders app, "edit" them and reset them again.

    How to fix this?

Too late to get an iPhone SE?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 08:51 AM PST

I want to get a new phone and am looking at getting an iPhone. I was looking at new iPhone 7s on eBay which are about £300 (black, 32GB), but seeing I could get an iPhone SE for around half that (64GB), is it worth getting it now? I plan to have the phone for 2 years and want it to be updated and supported until at least the end of those 2 years. And also, is it still fast enough by today's standards? Thanks.

iPhone 8 Plus for TouchID vs iPhone X?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 08:31 PM PST

I currently use iPhone 6S and absolutely LOVE TouchID as the fastest, most convenient way to unlock my phone. I have talked to a bunch of people with X and XS about FaceID and they all say things like "it works great but..." followed by exceptions like how you can't unlock phone lying on a desk, doesn't work great at angles/dark etc etc, "you will have to get used to it".

So... would you still recommend I get an iPhone 8 Plus at this point in 2018 to get all the features I can get on iPhone X, or just bite the bullet and surrender my soul to the (possibly minor) inconvenience of going to FaceID over TouchID?

[Question] My 80-yr-old grandma is locked out of her iphone 6s and it won't accept her fingerprint anymore since it restarted. We're willing to destroy the iphone to get to the memory to recover her photos. Is there a way to get the photos, even if we have to open the phone?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 06:12 AM PST

My grandmother is old and she just really wants to see her photos. She's been trying to get in since yesterday apparently that it's now at "try again in 1 hour" according to my uncle. There's no backup for her stuff since she didn't have itunes or a laptop and I checked her icloud and only Notes was saved (thankfully, there are some pics here too). She does have a viber account, but her photos and conversations didn't show up when we used her number to log-in in a new phone. Thankfully, everything she sent over Messenger under "Shared Media" is still there. We just really want to recover the pictures from her trips my grandfather and messages from him because she really enjoys reminiscing.

When I visited her last week, there was no passcode, but now there's one. I'm so furious that my uncle who lives with her has no clue of what her passcode is or bothered to set up an icloud backup.

If it means we have to enter the phone and extract a memory card, we're ok with that. We just have no idea if it can be done. Is it possible for us to go to apple and she just enters her phone with her touch id, like what she used to do? Thank you!

Is this an iOS issue or a hardware issue on my iPhone 7?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 05:54 AM PST

It won't connect to any networks with a sim card i it, also it doesn't show the modem firmware, it's running iOS 11, would updating it fix it or not?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 12:33 AM PST

hey I just got my iPhone 8 64 GB on 22nd December last year and my battery health is already at 85%. I want to get the battery replaced within the warranty but I read that the battery health needs to be 80% to carry out a replacement. is there anything I can do? if not how can I get my battery health down to 80% in a month? also do you think if I request the service center they'll do it lol?

EDIT : i'm asking if i can get it done for free since its under warranty

New iPhones!(Including X)Are they worth it?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 07:56 AM PST

So hello people,I am new to this thread and I came wondering if the new iPhone generation is worth the high price.

(By new generation i mean the new style and design as well as the new bionic chips,so we are talking about X,XS(MAX),XR.)

I am currently an android user(i am also a teen) and I am not planning to change my phone for now,the price is too high here in Greece (Iphone X at 900Euros,XS at 1100Euros and XR,which I dont like very much due to the similarities with the X,at 850Euros).It might sound like a logical price for long-time apple fans and users and I understand why.

(I am actually planning to get my first Iphone device in ~2 years, when I start College.I know that by then the new 2019,2020 and 2021 models will be out and we know nothing about them yet,so I leave that side untouched. It is good to know from now if the price is worth though)

    tl;dr

Are the devices worth the price rn?Which is the most worth it out of the 3.Explain if you can please.

iPhone 7 won’t load anything google related

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 10:18 AM PST

This has been happening for a few months now but I'm finally fed up with it and can't find any help when I search for others with this problem. Sometimes google works fine, but about 70% of the time it doesn't load. What I mean is if I try to google something on safari or try to just go to google.com, the blue loading bar will get to about 10% full and then nothing and the screen stays white. Using other browsers does the same thing. Google maps app will also not work while this is going on. All other websites and apps load perfectly fine while this is going on. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this? I don't know how much longer I can stand to use bing
