Two Weeks Traveling - Bending Results

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 12:09 PM PST

So I just recent returned home from a trip traveling around Peru. I had picked up the iPad 12.9 3rd gen the day before I left and also purchased the portfolio case. My backpack held my camera gear, my drone gear, most of my tech stuff, my headphones. It was incredibly full and very tight at all times. Getting the iPad in the computer pocket was difficult. It took both hands to push the iPad all the way in so I could close up the zipper. I did this for nearly two straight weeks, taking it in and out, and leaving it in for hours at a time, and the end result was no bending at all. I knew it was a risk and I figured I would test it and if it did bend I'd either return it or just use an AppleCare+ return. It may very well be too easy to bend but I want to help alleviate some fears: even under a lot of pressure, for weeks of use, there was zero bend from expected, albeit slightly abusive, behavior. Go enjoy your iPad.

TIL that you don’t have to double tap the flat side of the Apple Pencil to activate the shortcut

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 05:23 AM PST

I don't know if this is common knowledge, but I always see in Apple's advertisements that they always double tap on the flat side of the 2nd Gen Apple Pencil. Turns out, you can just double tap on any side and it will activate.

My iPad Pro 11inch review coming from a iPad Air 2

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 10:14 AM PST

I was looking to upgrade my iPad for quite some time, but didn't think it was worth it until the 2018 iPad Pro was announced. In this review I am going to be comparing the iPad Pro 2018 and iPad Air 2.

SCREENS This was the biggest difference coming from a iPad Air 2. Having 120hz and true tone is a big upgrade from older iPads. Everything feels much more fluid and responsive. True Tone is nice and keeps the iPads display a comfortable temperature. The iPad Air 2 display seems cold at times. The 9.7inch iPad and the 11inch iPad are almost the exact same size, but you get 1.3inches more on the 2018 iPad Pro. This makes the 11 inch iPad seem much bigger in size when it's not. It's nice having more screen in the same size as older iPads. The smaller bezels have not been a problem for me as palm rejection is excellent, and the bezels are still big enough for me to but my thumbs on. The only downside is most apps haven't been updated yet for the new 1.43x1 aspect ratio.

BATTERY LIFE Battery life feels the same to me. Both get round 10 hours of on screen time, and stand by time is still incredible. A nice little added bonus is getting a 18w power charger in the box. It charges the iPad a little faster then the old charger that came with older iPads.

PERFORMANCE It's a pretty big jump coming from a iPad Air 2, but it should be sense it's 4 years newer. The iPad Air 2 was starting to feel a little dated and sluggish to me. iOS 12 helped a lot, but the new iPad feels much more responsive (the 120hz refresh rate helps).

SPEAKERS Another big upgrade over the iPad Air 2. You get much more volume and bass.

OTHER I haven't used the pencil or keyboard, but if you are wanting to use this as your main computer I would probably purchase them with the iPad. Apple switching over to usb c from lightning was a smart move. Now you don't have to buy really expensive lighting adapters from apple, you can just go to amazon and get 3rd party adapters much cheaper. This will also help the iPad from feeling outdated when it gets older. Face ID is great and works almost every single time, and I prefer it over Touch ID. It works in any orientation and tells you if you are covering it up. It's a bummer that apple decided to get rid of the headphone jack. I think them marketing this as a pro device that it should come with a headphone jack. Yeah I know that you can get AirPods (I do own a pair), or a adapter but I just don't think you should have to with a pro device. They also need to add more computer like features in iOS 13 for the iPads. A proper file system is the big one everyone wants.

The new iPads are excellent, and worth the upgrade if you don't care about spending a lot of money to do so. Coming from a iPad Air 2, I would definitely say the upgrade was worth every penny!

    iPad for taking notes

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 11:27 AM PST

I never had an iPad before, and i've been thinking of getting one for college. Mostly for taking notes and watching. I had a little concerns, i don't if there is a huge difference in general of the new iPad and last year's version. I also not sure which one is better, 11 or 12.9? 12.9 seems a little bit big and 11 is a little bit small lol. Also, the new iPad accessories are really expensive... and it is so bendable and i've watched some durability test, the previous iPad seems stronger in every way. Any advice?

Without AppleCare+, what defects or damage are covered?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 10:11 AM PST

I plan to buy an iPad Pro without AppleCare+. So, I want to know what defects or damage are covered?

All I know is without AppleCare+:

    • it has a one year warranty compared to two years.

    • cosmetic damage is not covered.

    • manufacturing defects are covered.

What are the important things to know if I don't have AppleCare+?

iPad Air 2 battery replacement experience

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 02:32 PM PST

My iPad Air 2 wasn't holding charge too well so I used the $99 battery replacement ($116 including tax/shipping), to have it repaired and Apple actually sends you another iPad that is similar or better in specs, in my case it looks like a new iPad Air 2 (same color/storage) and works like a charm and the turnaround time was less than a week.

Very impressed with their service, and saved me time/money (i.e. selling mine & buying another newer iPad/iPad Pro + Accessories)

How does the 11" iPad Pro handle 4:3 aspect ratio content?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 09:02 AM PST

I know a lot has been made about the new aspect ratio of the 11" iPad Pro being the first non 4:3 ratio iPad. A lot of apps need to be updated to accommodate the new screen real estate. Some apps like like Netflix and Hulu will benefit from the space due to the content they are showing being widescreen and the new aspect ratio being better for that. My question is how will apps that use 4:3 aspect ratio content work (magazines, comic books, PDF files)? Will they now have black bars where previously they didn't? Will they be able to dynamically expand. Does anyone have any pictures they can post of how magazines are currently displayed on the 11" iPad Pro? Are they using full screen? Also do the rounded corners effect anything (page numbering)? Thanks in advance for any information.

How big of an upgrade would be to switch from iPad Air 2 to iPad Pro 11 inch? Is the new iPad much better? How is watching movies on it? And reading books?

Does every cellular ipad have a sim card tray?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 08:30 AM PST

Just wondering out of curiosity if apple ever made a cellular device with only an embedded SIM (in any country, ever).

the knowledge base articles list many ipads but I'm not able to tell if every model ever produced is listed somewhere in them (or if some obscure model might be missing):

    SIM card sizes - support.apple.com/HT202645

Apple SIM cards and embedded SIM cards - support.apple.com/HT203099

    Budget iPad and headphone jack

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 08:23 PM PST

So with the release of the new iPad pro and the removal of the headphone jack, I think that the writing is on the wall and that the budget model will lose the headphone jack on the next revision. I have been on the fence on buying the budget iPad for a couple of months now. Generally, at this point in the release cycle I would wait till the next model this coming April, but if there is a chance of the budget model losing its headphone jack I think I should just pull the trigger on this year's model. Mainly because if I am getting a tablet, I would like it to have a headphone jack.

So what do you all think? I am I right in my thinking that this years budget model will be the last one with the headphone jack?

    A few keyboard questions

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 08:55 PM PST

This is my first iPad Pro and I've never owned a Mac before, so I'm not sure if this is how all Apple keyboard are, but there are a few things I don't understand. A few questions/observations.

    1. The CMD button is the equivalent of Ctrl on a PC, right? I use it for shortcuts and I can also hold it a couple seconds for a list of shortcuts. It's odd how it's in the opposite position from Ctrl on a Windows PC.

    2. Speaking of which, what does the Control button do? I haven't been able to figure out any uses for it yet. Am I missing something?

    3. The Option key is also confusing me. The only important use for it I've discovered so far is to hold it while hitting an arrow key to jump a word over or scroll faster. Option can also be held for all the weird characters that no one ever uses, but that seems kind of pointless, especially given that those characters aren't printed on the keyboard, so there's no way I'd ever remember them, even if I did need them for some reason. I don't know why there are two Option keys, given that I never even use one of them.

    4. Caps Lock defaults to changing languages. This was driving me mad. It had the exact same function as the globe button for switching between languages/emoji. I had to go into keyboard settings to toggle it so that Caps Lock actually functions as...caps lock.

    5. No Escape key? Do you just hit CMD-H each time? That seems like an odd choice.

Surprisingly, I like the feel of the keyboard a lot more than I was expecting. I've always hated laptop keyboards, but the Smart Keyboard Folio feels good to type on - even on the small 11" model.

PDF annotation app for windows users

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 10:48 PM PST

I know that there are tons of app dedicated to PDF annotations. I'm looking for one that I can somehow use both on my iPad and my PC. If there is a annotations solution which requires two different app, one for each platform, it will also be good for me, as long as the integration is smooth :)

12.9 inch iPad pro for note-taking

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 08:26 PM PST

Is it worth buying the 12.9 inch iPad pro for taking notes and doing college work? I already have the 2018 MacBook pro but taking notes with the Apple pencil is really sick.

Can anyone in a similar situation explain what they did it or plan on deciding?
