    iPhone XR Review

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 10:27 PM PDT

I wanna make this a honest and comprehensive 24hr review so here we go...

First, a little background on my smartphone past. I have been an Android use for a long time. My first phone was a Galaxy S2, then a Nexus 4, Nextbit Robin, Galaxy S7 Edge and finally a Galaxy S8. I've always liked the Android experience and I never thought I needed an iPhone or an Apple product. Around last month I had received a software update on my S8 that killed the battery life (knowing Samsung a fix for this would not come soon enough). The phone wouldn't even last me until lunch time, but fast charging helped. Not only that, but the screen has developed horrible burn in that I was not aware of. So I decided to upgrade. My first choice? The Pixel 3. I was eager to get a Google phone again and I was excited to get the smaller Pixel. But after a couple of weeks of reading the Pixel subreddit and the phone's numerous problems I decided it wasn't worth it. So fast forward to now... and I am an owner of an iPhone. Here are my thoughts on it:

Screen: Let's get this out of the way first. I went to Best Buy on the day of this phone's release to test it out. I was pleasantly surprised that the screen wasn't pixelated. And why would it be? I've used my friends' iPhones in the past with 326ppi screens and they've looked fine. This screen is no different. While I was at Best Buy I also used the smaller Pixel at the booth they have and let me tell you this: The 1080p OLED panel on the Pixel was visibly more fuzzy and grainy than the XR. I did not like the Pixel display at all. The brightness was low, the colors were inaccurate and the screen had a pink hue. It was obvious that the LCD was superior and much brighter. Now that I have used the XR for 24hrs I don't mind losing OLED. Yes the black levels aren't great and it's noticeable at night in bed, but in the day time I didn't notice it. As for colors? I love the color accuracy on this. As a photographer it was important for me to have an accurate display. I did turn off True Tone because the white balance did not match my taste. The overall sharpness and viewing angels of this panel were fine. I'd notice some text that was rendered jagged in some apps like Starbucks but maybe that's an optimization issue. Overall, holding the phone from regular viewing distance you can't notice anything. Obviously if you put a sharper screen like the S8 side by side you can tell a slight difference. As for bezels and the notch, I don't notice either of them anymore and it's a non issue for me. I am pleased with this screen for what it is. Could they have put a 1080p screen? Yes. But they didn't for whatever reason, scaling or for battery or to up sell you on the XS. But if the screen resolution bothers you so much, just don't buy the device it's simple (at least I don't have to worry about burn in).

Battery: Wow. The battery life on this thing is insane. I still can't believe that a phone can get battery life like this. I've never had a phone with good battery life, but this is a major exception. It really does sip on the battery. Mind you, I am not a mobile gamer. I don't play games and I've never did but for my social media apps and media consumption it gets the job done. I got the phone at 70% and charged it to 85% at 8pm yesterday. I didn't put it on the charger until 6pm the next today when it hit 10% and I had got almost 9hrs screen on time. Phenomenal battery. If you need a phone that can last, this is the one you should get.

Speed/Daily Tasks: Coming from a Samsung, this thing flies. The OS is so smooth and fluid. I didn't know I was missing out on this. It does everything fast and faster than my Samsung. iOS is so aesthetically pleasing and consistent. It was refreshing coming from Samsung's skin on Android. The A12 bionic is just fast. No complaints here.

Face ID: I was kind of skeptical about this. I really thought that not having a fingerprint scanner would be a downgrade but I was wrong. Face ID is very convenient. My S8 had a scanner on the back and I would always have to readjust my fingers to reach it. With the XR? I just look and swipe up. It's faster than I thought. My only complaint? I wish it worked in landscape. It was annoying having the phone on a table in landscape and having to turn it to portrait to unlock. I'm being nitpicky but it was something I noticed. It's really nice to open your bank app and log in seamlessly.

Camera: Coming from the Galaxy S8 this camera was a nice upgrade. It's similar spec and produces nice images. The front camera is good, but I liked the one of my S8 just a little better. The HDR on the XR is better than the one on the S8, but just a little overdone in some cases. But my favorite thing is the video capability of this phone. 4K 60, 240fps at 1080P and stereo audio are all nice inclusions that I appreciate. As for portrait mode, it's cool but nothing more for me. Never owned a phone with dual cameras and I don't really care for the feature. I have a DSLR to do my real portraits. One of the deciding factors in getting the XR over the Pixel was video. While Night Sight and Google's AI processing is astonishing, it seems as if they forgot about video recording. The Pixel has horrible audio, and video capabilities are just okay. The iPhone XR's camera is more consistent and more well rounded (I have not tested low light).

Build Quality: When I took it out of the box all I could think is "this is heavy!" Coming from my S8 there was a noticeable difference in weight but the good kind. It feels very premium and its a nice feel in the hand. I love how the glass slopes into the curves like my S8. The aluminum band is soft and feels substantial. The only thing I don't like is the camera bump. I've never had a phone with a camera bump so this is a first. I got the XR in white (everything I have is white) and it's really clean. Almost looks like a storm trooper. I dig it.

Size: It's a great size. The footprint is a little bigger than my S8 also a little wider, but it's just right.

Software: As I said iOS 12 is smooth and fast. Apps stay in memory and it feels more polished than Android. Apps seem to run slightly better on iOS and I was happy with load times. Nothing much for me to say here. As a first time iPhone user it's a good first impression.

Speakers: My god... How have I been missing this all this time? I thought the Pixel 3 speakers sounded nice but the XR sounds even better. It's punchy and loud and the speakers even have a little bass to them. Overall it blows my S8 out of the water. The stereo sound is nice and it's a plus that we can now hear that sound in our videos recorded in stereo. Very nice.

Lack of 3D touch: I can't comment on this. I've used 3D touch in the past. It's cool but I don't really care. There's long press with feedback which seems similar but obviously you won't get to "peek" and "pop" in some apps. If 3D touch is important for you maybe that's a deciding factor? But I say use your phone for a day with 3D touch off and you decide if you miss it.

Water Resistance: My S8 was IP68 and this is IP67. Whatever. If it can withstand Washington rain that's all I care about and it'll be just fine.

Charging: The 5W charger... I have to laugh. Not gonna use it. I bought an iPad charger and I will use that. I also love the inclusion of wireless charging. I'm happy I can still use my Samsung wireless chargers.

Other things: The lightening port is not centered. I don't care. Coming from Samsung where nothing is centered this doesn't bother me. Notifications aren't as good an Android but it's similar. A personal thing: I don't have any cables for this phone as I have just noticed and I don't know what to do with my numerous USB C cables haha. I miss Samsung Pay. I can't use my phone at old card swiping readers but that's slowly changing.

Headphone jack/Storage: I opted for the 64gb version. I know the 128 is only $50 more but I don't even need that much space. It's nice to have, but I'd rather spend that $50 on accessories/cases. The S8 I had came with a SD card slot. I'm not really missing it here but that's a bummer. Also no headphone jack but I think I can suffice with the lightening port EarPods until I get a set of AirPods.

But why not the XS?: Price! Washington state tax is 10% and that makes the 64gb XS almost $300 more than the 64gb XR. I'm not jumping on the 1k phone bandwagon just yet. With that price difference I can get me some AirPods or some nice cases. The OLED on the XS is nice but not a necessity for me especially if the trade off is good battery life.

Value: It starts at $750. Some people think it's too much but is it? I don't think so. The iPhone 8 started around this price. The XR seems to be the "iPhone 9" we never got. It's a good value. Should it have started at $699? Yeah but you're still getting the latest processor and FaceID and the 128gb option is only a $50 more. I think this price is fine.

Bottom line: If you're thinking about upgrading from a recent Android/Galaxy I say do it, it's worth it. I feel overall that this is a good phone for the money. If you're coming from past iPhones I'm not so sure. Since this is my first Apple product I can't comment much on their past products. It's really up to you if you want to upgrade. But overall, this is a well rounded device that does everything right. It's not perfect, but it's the complete package. The iPhone for the regular person. As a long time Android user, Apple has my focus and I am really liking this phone and the overall experience.

If you made it this far... Thanks for reading haha. I will answer any other questions you have.

    Edit: Spelling

Is it true that turning off Screen Time noticeably improve the battery time?

    My Apple Store experience

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 04:14 AM PDT

I just came out of an apple store and there were these 2 young men testing out the iPhone XR. They shouted out loud how bad this phone is and how cheap the display looks. They shouted stuff like „Whoever buys this piece of shit is dumb". „Look, my Galaxy S6 has a better screen" They both looked like absolute hobos and were kicked out of the store. It was very amusing to me because that's how I imagine all these intrusive apple haters to look and act like in real life

How picky is Apple about returns?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 10:35 AM PDT

I bought an iPhone Xr outright to test out and it's not for me. Impressive display, but I'd rather pay the extra for the Xs. It's only been a few days and I have babied it since I figured I might want to return it, but I've already noticed some micro scratches on the screen 😡😡😡

They are SUPER minimal - you can't feel them and they are literally only visible in direct sunlight, not even in well lit rooms.

The question is, am I screwed or can I still return it? How picky is Apple when it comes to the condition of the device for returns?

In defence of the iPhone Xr's "720p" screen

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:30 AM PDT

To begin with yes I know the screen in the iPhone Xr isn't as good as the screen you could get in some equally priced android phones, but it isn't as bad as what you might have heard.

Most OLED panels used in smartphones, eg Samsung's AMOLED panels, used a pentile matrix. This means each "pixel" has 2 sub-pixels, either Red and Green or Green and Blue.

By comparison most LCD panels, eg the one used in the iPhone Xr, have 3 sub-pixels per pixel, Red, Green and Blue.

This means the panel used in the iPhone Xr has approximately the same number of sub-pixels as a 900p pentile panel, or 50% more than a pentile panel at the same resolution. It's also been shown that at the same resolution a RBG stripe panel (like the one used in the iPhone Xr) appears noticeably sharper than a pentile panel.

The number of sub-pixels isn't everything, a pentile panel partially makes up for this in other ways, but my point is that the "resolution" of a screen isn't the whole story when you're comparing 2 different technologies. You can't directly compare a color CRT to and LCD the same way you can't directly compare a pentile panel to an RGB stipe panel.

Sorry in advance if any of my information is wrong, I'm not an expert on the topic, I used this Wikipedia page for most of my info.

    Leather Case for iPhone XR

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 08:55 AM PDT

I was really excited to get a new phone & didn't even consider case options. Low & behold, I find out that Apple hasn't released any cases for the XR yet (wtf?)

Does anyone have any recommendations on a brand that offers a good leather case in black? I have a cheap clear one holding me over for now. I could wait until Apple releases theirs, but there doesn't seem to be any word on when, or even if, that will happen for the XR.

    GBoard

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:11 AM PDT

Just wondering if anyone else has issues with GBoard?

It seems to run OK for a few days on my phone, then crashes out and reverts me to the standard keyboard.

My GF seems to have no issues with it on her device, which is exactly the same as mine. I had this issue on my iPhone X and 7+ too, just seems quite unstable.

Should I replace my iPhone battery?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 10:10 AM PDT

I have a iPhone 6 with a battery health of 88%. I'm wondering if it's worth me taking it in and replacing my battery before the end of the year.

I charge it every night and I usually have to recharge when I get home from work

I also have a small crack on the screen so it sounds like they may have to repair that as well...so that would be included as part of the cost.

iPhone XS Camera Moving When Turned On

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 09:29 AM PDT

So I just discovered this on the iPhone Xs and wanted to know if anyone else has this too.

Whenever I activate the camera, I can actually feel something in the camera element moving. And when lack of ambient sound permits, I can actually hear something clicking as the camera powers up.

You can check for yourself by invoking the camera and holding your finger near the lenses / listening closely.

Does anyone else have this too or is it just my device?

iPhone X Camera Picture Quality Significantly Worse Under iOS 12

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:18 AM PDT

Since updating to iOS 12 I've had significantly degraded image quality from the camera on my iPhone X when compared to photos I was taking under iOS 11.

The key problems I've noticed are:

    1. Auto-focus is not as accurate or fast as on iOS 11.
    2. There is significantly more aggressive noise reduction / image smoothing which looks very poor, certainly much worse than iOS 11.
    3. The phone struggles under lower light conditions - much more than it did on iOS 11.
    4. Bright lights (e.g. a cars headlights) cause very poor results both with HDR enabled and disabled regardless of the focal point - a problem I did not have under iOS 11.

At first I thought it was just a dirty lens or I was doing something wrong but I'm now convinced it's a software bug in iOS 12 and 12.1 beta.

    I've tried the following:

    • Cleaning the lens.
    • Gently tapping around the lens.
    • Reset all settings.
    • Factory reset.
    • Full reinstall (using IPSW) in iTunes.
    • Installing iOS 12.1 beta.
    • Testing with HDR disabled and enabled.
    • Testing with AF lock.
    • Comparing with a friends iPhone 8, which now seems to take better photos than my X.

I've posted my question along with some sample photos to Apple's forums here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8605760

Any suggestions short of a trip out to an Apple store much appreciated!

What do you folks think about the A11 vs the A12?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 08:26 AM PDT

I know they're both fantastic chipsets. For those of you who made the jump, can you tell any day to day difference between the X and Xs/Xr? I had my eyes set on the Xr but realized it would be more financially responsible for me to buy a used X and save about $150 if you include tax on the Xr. However I was wanting to keep my phone at least 3 years this time around and do not know about getting the already one year old device. I just want a snappy device for a few years, thanks.

    Any insight is appreciated!

Iphone 6 not turning on after dead battery

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 06:25 AM PDT

Few days ago I run out of battery and after plugging my iphone back to charger it didnt show any charging animation. I tried many other cables that worked on my ipad but nothing. I tried to restart and force start and every other command possible. Nothing. I tried to clean my charger port on my iphone and plug it to Itunes but it didnt even recognize my phone. Today I went to the phone repair shop and they replaced my battery but it didnt work, and they said they cant do anything. So im curious what caused this? Some internal error? Are some of my phones components or hard drive or something similar broken?

Edit: Thank you for your replies! I was wondering that what if i open my iphone from the back and could see if some parts inside are damaged eg. out of normal place? Or removing some parts and putting them back or something similar?

iPhone 7 Plus (iOS 12) not getting text notifications

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 09:25 AM PDT

Anyone else experiencing this? I've got an iPhone 7 Plus on iOS 12.0.1, and since the update I've been having a ton of issues with text notifications. Neither my phone nor my Apple Watch (series 1, latest OS) vibrates or makes a tone when I receive a text. I have to unlock my phone or check my watch Notification Center in order to see that I have text notifications on my lockscreen. I've tried the following:

Made sure all notifications were on, and do not disturb was disabled

Reboot, restore, and then finally restore as a new iPhone

Did both the above for my Apple Watch too

Any advice? It's worth noting that all my other notifications work as intended. It's only iMessage that gives me the problem.

    Switching to iPhone... I think

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 09:00 AM PDT

I've never had an iPhone in my pocket as my daily driver. I have played with others briefly, but I've never used one extensively. I want to switch from my old S7, but I can't decide if I should "test the waters" first and get an 8 or even a 7 or just go all in with the XS. I'm being extremely indecisive about it, and I would like your opinions.

For those of you wondering what is making me switch, nothing in particular. I like to try new things, and I'm in the market for a new device.

XS owners - how good or acceptable is the battery in real life?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 08:33 AM PDT

All I'm reading and hearing is that XS doesn't have as good battery life as XR but I would like to know how is it fairing for you so far in real life.

I have a XS (non-Max) coming in in a week and there are some reports that battery absolutely sucks on XS and that's making me a bit nervous. I'm coming from a Moto G5 Plus and an iPhone 6S.

    Thanks!

Why must I use I passcode to enable Face ID every day?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 11:06 PM PDT

On almost a daily basis, at some random time during the day, for apparently no reason whatsoever, I try to unlock my iPhone X and I get a message saying I must enter the passcode in order enable Face ID.

Why does that happen? Does it happen to other people as well?

    XR vs 6T

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 11:09 AM PDT

I was pretty certain I was going to buy the XR since it's reveal, until today's reveal of the OnePlus 6T. With the 6T, I'll have a smaller notch, a bigger display, AMOLED, duel cameras, facial recognition and an in screen fingerprint sensor, and included fast charging. But, with the XR id get Face ID, A12, better battery, wireless charging, iOS (which is my preferred os) and all the benefits iOS brings. But the XR costs about $200 more then the 6T. What should I do? I know this may be biased towards the XR so I have also posted this to the Android subreddit.
